Shear-box test with strain measurement was used to study time-dependent stress and strain of in-plane shear(Mode Ⅱ) fracture process of rock and to reveal the mechanism of Mode Ⅱ fracture.Numerical results show that the maximum shear stress τmax at the crack tip is much larger than the maximum tensile stress σ1 and the ratio of τmax/σ1 is about 5,which favors Mode Ⅱ fracture of rock.Test results indicate that the strain-time curve comprises three stages:the linear deformation stage, the micro-cracking stage and the macroscopic crack propagation. The strain in the direction of the original notch plane is negative, due to restraining effect of compressive loading applied to the original notch plane. Both σ1 and τmax are increased as the load increases, but the slope of τmax is larger than that of σ1 and the value of τmax is always larger than that of σ1.Therefore,τmax reaches its limited value at peak load before σ1 and results in Mode Ⅱ fracture of rock.Shear-box(i.e.compression-shear) test becomes a potential standard method for achieving the true Mode Ⅱ fracture and determining Mode Ⅱ fracture toughness of rock. 展开更多

Generally, longwall mining-induced stress results from the stress relaxation due to destressed zone that occurs above the mined panel. Knowledge of induced stress is very important for accurate design of adjacent gateroads and intervening pillars which helps to raise the safety and productivity of longwall mining operations. This study presents a novel time-dependent analytical model for determination of the longwall mining-induced stress and investigates the coefficient of stress concentration over adjacent gates and pillars. The model is developed based on the strain energy balance in longwall mining incorporated to a rheological constitutive model of caved materials with time-varying parameters. The study site is the Tabas coal mine of Iran. In the proposed model, height of destressed zone above the mined panel, total longwall mining-induced stress, abutment angle, induced vertical stress, and coefficient of stress concentration over neighboring gates and intervening pillars are calculated. To evaluate the effect of proposed model parameters on the coefficient of stress concentration due to longwall mining, sensitivity analysis is performed based on the field data and experimental constants. Also, the results of the proposed model are compared with those of existing models. The comparative results confirm a good agreement between the proposed model and the in situ measurements. According to the obtained results, it is concluded that the proposed model can be successfully used to calculate the longwall mining-induced stress. Therefore, the optimum design of gate supports and pillar dimensions would be attainable which helps to increase the mining efficiency. 展开更多

The objective of this study is to determine the time-dependent strengths of salt mine pillars in the Maha Sarakham formation, northeast of Thailand. Strain rate-controlled triaxial compression tests have been performed on salt specimens under confining pressures from 0 MPa to 12 MPa. The strain rates are from 10^(-7) s^(-1) to 10^(-4) s^(-1). The axial stresses and lateral strains are monitored through the strain-softening region. The results indicate that the strengths and elastic moduli increase exponentially with the strain rates. The power creep law parameters are calibrated with the test results, and hence allows constructing series of strain-time curves for the salt pillars under different depths and extraction ratios. The strain energy density principle is applied to develop a strength criterion for the salt pillars. Combining this criterion with the series of the strain-time curves the time-dependent strengths of the salt pillars for different extraction ratios can be predicted. 展开更多

In practical engineering, the total vertical stress in the soil layer is not constant due to stress diffusion, and varies with time and depth. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of stress diffusion on the two-dimensional(2D)plane strain consolidation properties of unsaturated soils when the stress varies with time and depth.A series of semi-analytical solutions in terms of excess pore air and water pressures and settlement for 2D plane strain consolidation of unsaturated soils can be derived with the joint use of Laplace transform and Fourier sine series expansion. Then, the inverse Laplace transform of the semi-analytical solution is given in the time domain using a self-programmed code based on Crump’s method. The reliability of the obtained solutions is proved by the degeneration. Finally, the 2D plots of excess pore pressures and the curves of settlement varying with time, considering different physical parameters of unsaturated soil stratum and depth-dependent stress, are depicted and analyzed to study the 2D plane strain consolidation properties of unsaturated soils subjected to the depthdependent stress. 展开更多

Estimation of in situ stresses based on back-analysis of measured stress changes and displacements has become an alternative to the direct stress measurement methods. In order to help users conduct own measurement and analysis, this paper presents in detail a field stress back-analysis approach directly from borehole strain changes measured during nearby underground excavation.Essential formulations in major steps and the procedure for the entire analysis process are provided to allow users to follow. The instrument for borehole strain change measurement can be the CSIR or CSIRO stress cells and other borehole strain cells that can measure strains on borehole walls.Strain changes corresponding to the stress changes at a borehole location are calculated in borehole environment. The stress changes due to nearby excavation can be calculated by an analytical model for a single circular opening and simulated by a numerical model for non-circular and multiple openings. These models are based on isotropic, homogeneous and linear elastic assumptions. The analysis of borehole strain changes is accomplished by multiple linear regression based on error minimization and an integrated process provides the best-fit solution directly to the in situ stresses.A statistical technique is adopted for screening outliers in the measurement data, checking measurement compatibility and evaluating the reliability of analysis results. An application example is included to demonstrate the practical application and the analysis procedure. 展开更多

To investigate the early-age behaviors of concrete under a restrained condition, a set of apparatus was developed. In this way, the tensile creep and other early-age properties can be investigated in depth. By measuring the modulus of elasticity of concrete, synchronous shrinkage of concrete and steel rings and free shrinkage of concrete, the deformations of concrete ring can be quantified respectively. The experimental results show the tensile stress in concrete is time-dependent, and the stress at cracking is much lower than the tensile strength at that age; the tensile creep plays an important role in relaxing the tensile stress and postponing the cracking of concrete. 展开更多

Stress voltages on time-dependent breakdown characteristics of GaN MIS-HEMTs during negative gate bias stress (with VGS < 0, VD = VS = 0) and off-state stress (VG < VTh, VDS > 0, VS = 0) are investigated. For negative bias stress, the breakdown time distribution (β) decreases with the increasing negative gate voltage, while β is larger for higher drain voltage at off-state stress. Two humps in the time-dependent gate leakage occurred under both breakdown conditions, which can be ascribed to the dielectric breakdown triggered earlier and followed by the GaN layer breakdown. Combining the electric distribution from simulation and long-term monitoring of electric parameter, the peak electric fields under the gate edges at source and drain sides are confirmed as the main formation locations for per-location paths during negative gate voltage stress and off-state stress, respectively. 展开更多

A more accurate estimation of stress-strain relationships for martensite and ferrite was developed, and the modified law of mixture was used to investigate the stress-strain partitioning of constituent phases in dual phase (DP) steels with two different martensite volume fractions. The results show that there exist great differences in the stress-strain contribution of martensite and ferrite to DP steel. The stress-strain partitioning coefficient is not constant in the whole strain range, but decreases with increasing the true strain of DP steel. The softening effect caused by the dilution of carbon concentration in martensite with the increase of martensite volume fraction has great influence on the strain contribution of martensite. The strain ratio of ferrite to martensite almost linearly increases with increasing the true strain of DP steel when the martensite volume fraction is 22%, because martensite always keeps elastic. But the strain ratio of ferrite to martensite varies indistinctively with the further increase in true strain of DP steel above 0.034 when the martensite volume fraction is 50%, because plastic deformation happens in martensite. The stress ratio ofmartensite to ferrite decreases monotonously with increasing the true strain of DP steel whether the martensite volume fraction is 22% or 50%. 展开更多

Based on simplified axisymmetrical forming model, a elasto-plastic FEM simulation system of multi-pass conventional spinning is developed. Taking the typical draw-spinning as the study object, and establishing reasonable mechanics model, research on the first pass of spinning process is carried out with FEM system developed. The distributions of the stress and strain are obtained by three types of roller-trace curves: straight line, involute curves and quadratic curves. The results are as follows: (1) The values of equivalent stress and strain are the lowest under involute curve compared to other two curves, and they change relatively small and decrease with the increase of radius. The values of equivalent stress and strain is the highest under quadratic curves, and increase with the increase of radius. (2) The value of radial stress is smallest under involute curve, and is the largest under straight line. Value of radial stress is often used as the criterion of cracking limit, so its distribution laws can provide references for studying the condition of cracking in multi-pass conventional spinning under different roller-trace. (3) Tangential stress is compressive stress. Absolute value of tangential stress is the smallest under involute curve, and values of tangential stress are close between other two curves. The distribution laws of tangential stress can serve as a significant guide to research the critical condition of wrinkling in multi-pass conventional spinning under different roller-trace. (4) The reduction of thickness is the smallest under involute curve. The distribution of the thickness strain is very unequal under quadratic curves. The results obtained can provide references for selecting reasonable roller-trace in multi-pass conventional spinning. 展开更多

A study of the Kunlunshan earthquake of MS = 8.1 based on observed coseismic strain steps from the borehole strain monitoring network over China has been carried out with some interesting results. Firstly, many recordings disagree with theoretic calculation using static dislocation model. Secondly, abnormally large strain steps are ob-served at quite a few stations in the tectonically active east-northern China, while in the relatively inactive east-southern China no obvious steps are recorded. It is inferred that seismic stress triggering may significantly affect remote seismic strain field. In other words, whether remote faulting be seismically triggered or not may de-termine the pattern of local seismic strain changes. Further comparison study results of March 11, 1999 Zhangbei earthquake and November 1, 1999 Datong earthquake show that the specific pattern of seismic zones has obvious influence on seismic strain changes in the region. This supports the idea that observed abnormal strain steps might be produced by coseismicly stress-triggered local faulting. 展开更多

The magnitude of tensile stress and tensile strain at an anastomosis site under physiological stress is an important factor for the success of anastomosis following suturing in peripheral nerve injury treatment. Sciatic nerves from fresh adult cadavers were used to create models of sciatic nerve injury. The denervated specimens underwent epineurial and perineurial suturing. The elastic modulus (40.96 + 2.59 MPa) and Poisson ratio (0.37 + 0.02) of the normal sciatic nerve were measured by strain electrical measurement. A resistance strain gauge was pasted on the front, back left, and right of the edge of the anastomosis site after suturing. Strain electrical measurement results showed that the stress and strain values of the sciatic nerve following perineurial suturing were lower than those following epineurial suturing. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sciatic nerve fibers were disordered following epineurial compared with perineurial suturing. These results indicate that the effect of perineurial suturing in sciatic nerve injury repair is better than that of epineurial suturing. 展开更多

The seemingly contradictory understandings of the initial crush stress of cellular materials under dynamic loadings exist in the literature, and a comprehensive analysis of this issue is carried out with using direct information of local stress and strain. Local stress/strain calculation methods are applied to determine the initial crush stresses and the strain rates at initial crush from a cell-based finite element model of irregular honeycomb under dynamic loadings. The initial crush stress under constant-velocity compression is identical to the quasi-static one, but less than the one under direct impact, i.e. the initial crush stresses under different dynamic loadings could be very different even though there is no strain-rate effect of matrix material. A power-law relation between the initial crush stress and the strain rate is explored to describe the strain-rate effect on the initial crush stress of irregular honeycomb when the local strain rate exceeds a critical value, below which there is no strain-rate effect of irregular honeycomb. Deformation mechanisms of the initial crush behavior under dynamic loadings are also explored. The deformation modes of the initial crush region in the front of plastic compaction wave are different under different dynamic loadings. 展开更多

How the wave propagation analysis plays a key role in the studies of dynamic response of materials at high strain rates is analyzed. For the wave propagation technique, the followings are important: the loading and unloading constitutive relation presumed, the positions of the sensors embedded, the interactions between loading waves and unloading waves. For the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique, the assumption of one-dimensional stress wave propagation and the assumption of stress uniformity along the specimen should be satisfied. When the larger diameter bars are employed, the wave dispersion effects should be considered, including the high frequency oscillations, non-uniform stress distribution across the bar section, increase of rise time, and amplitude attenuation. The stress uniformity along the specimen is influenced by the reflection times in specimen, the wave impedance ratio of the specimen and the bar, and the waveform. 展开更多

A new simple thixotropy model was proposed in the present paper to characterize the thixotropy-loop experiments and the start-up experiment of an LDPE (PE-FSB23D0221Q200) melt. The thixotropy model is a combination of a viscoelastic-component and a postulated kinetics process of structure change, which is constituted in terms of the indirect microstructural approach usually adopted in the characterization of thixotropy. The descriptions of the thixotropy model on both the thixotropy-loop tests and the startup test show good agreement with the experimental values, indicating the good capability of the model in characterizing the time-dependent nonlinear viscoelastic. The stress overshoot phenomenon and the stress relaxation after cessation of the thixotropy loop test can be described well by the model, whereas both of the typical viscoelastic phenomena could not be described in our previous work with a variant Huang model. 展开更多

We studied the effect of loose tenon dimensions on stress and strain distributions in T-shaped mortise and loose tenon (M&LT) furni-ture joints under uniaxial bending loads, and determined the effects of loose tenon length (30, 45, 60, and 90 mm) and loose tenon thickness (6 and 8 mm) on bending moment capacity of M&LT joints constructed with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive. Stress and strain distributions in joint elements were then estimated for each joint using ANSYS finite element (FE) software. The bending moment capacity of joints increased significantly with thickness and length of the tenon. Based on the FE analysis results, under uniaxial bending, the highest shear stress values were obtained in the middle parts of the tenon, while the highest shear elastic strain values were estimated in glue lines between the tenon sur-faces and walls of the mortise. Shear stress and shear elastic strain values in joint elements generally increased with tenon dimensions and corre-sponding bending moment capacities. There was consistency between predicted maximum shear stress values and failure modes of the joints. 展开更多

Wellbore stability is a key to have a successful drilling operation.Induced stresses are the main factors affecting wellbore instability and associated problems in drilling operations. These stresses are significantly impacted by pore pressure variation and thermal stresses in the field. In order to address wellbore instability problems,it is important to investigate the mechanisms of rockefluid interaction with respect to thermal and mechanical aspects. In order to understand the induced stresses, different mathematical models have been developed. In this study, the field equations governing the problem have been derived based on the thermo-poroelastic theory and solved analytically in Laplace domain. The results are transferred to time domain using Fourier inverse method.Finite difference method is also utilized to validate the results.Pore pressure and temperature distributions around the wellbore have been focused and simulated.Next, induced radial and tangential stresses for different cases of cooling and heating of formation are compared. In addition, the differences between thermo-poroelastic and poroelastic models in situation of permeable and impermeable wellbores are described. It is observed that cooling and pore pressure distribution reinforce the induced radial stress.Whereas cooling can be a tool to control and reduce tangential stress induced due to invasion of drilling fluid. In the next step, safe mud window is obtained using Mohr-Coulomb,Mogi-Coulomb,and modified Lade failure criteria for different inclinations.Temperature and pore pressure distributions do not change the minimum allowable wellbore pressure significantly. However, upper limit of mud window is sensitive to induced stresses and it seems vital to consider changes in temperature and pore pressure to avoid any failures. The widest and narrowest mud windows are proposed by modified Lade and Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, respectively. 展开更多

The influence of stress and strain on the kinetics and transformation plasticity of bainite transformation has been studied using a 26Cr2Ni4MoV steel by thermal simulation experimental method. It has been found that as applied stress increases the maximum volume fraction of bainite increases for applied stress lower than the yield stress but decreases for applied stress higher than the yield stress. This is believed to be related with the strengthening of parent phase due to pre-deformation. Experimental results indicate that applied stress accelerates bainite transformation. When applied stress is lower than the yield stress, the parameter of transformation plasticity increases with applied stress while it becomes a constant for stress larger than yield stress. 展开更多
