Time-Domain Protection for Transmission Lines Connected to Wind Power Plant based on Model Matching and Hausdorff Distance

The system impedance instability,high-order harmonics,and frequency offset are main fault characteristics of wind power system.Moreover,the measurement angle of faulty phase is affected by rotation speed frequency component,which causes traditional directional protections based on angle comparison between voltage and current to operate incorrectly.In this paper,a time-domain protection for connected to wind power plant based on model matching is proposed,which compares the calculated current and the measured current to identify internal faults and external faults.Under external faults,the calculated current and measured current waveform are quite similar because the protected transmission lines is equivalent to a lumped parameter model and the model itself is not damaged.However,the similarity of calculated current and measured current is quite low,due to destroyed integrity of model under internal faults.Additionally,Hausdorff distance is introduced to obtain the similarity of the calculated current and measured current.Since the proposed protection scheme is applied in time domain,it is independent from current frequency offsets of wind energy system,high-order harmonics,and system impedance variations.Comprehensive case studies are undertaken through Power Systems Computer Aided Design(PSCAD),while simulation results verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach in fault identification. 展开更多

The change processes and trends of shoreline and tidal flat forced by human activities are essential issues for the sustainability of coastal area,which is also of great significance for understanding coastal ecological environment changes and even global changes.Based on field measurements,combined with Linear Regression(LR)model and Inverse Distance Weighing(IDW)method,this paper presents detailed analysis on the change history and trend of the shoreline and tidal flat in Bohai Bay.The shoreline faces a high erosion chance under the action of natural factors,while the tidal flat faces a different erosion and deposition patterns in Bohai Bay due to the impact of human activities.The implication of change rule for ecological protection and recovery is also discussed.Measures should be taken to protect the coastal ecological environment.The models used in this paper show a high correlation coefficient between observed and modeling data,which means that this method can be used to predict the changing trend of shoreline and tidal flat.The research results of present study can provide scientific supports for future coastal protection and management. 展开更多

As an effective approach to achieve the“dual-carbon”goal,the grid-connected capacity of renewable energy increases constantly.Photovoltaics are the most widely used renewable energy sources and have been applied on various occasions.However,the inherent randomness,intermittency,and weak support of grid-connected equipment not only cause changes in the original flow characteristics of the grid but also result in complex fault characteristics.Traditional overcurrent and differential protection methods cannot respond accurately due to the effects of unknown renewable energy sources.Therefore,a longitudinal protection method based on virtual measurement of current restraint is proposed in this paper.The positive sequence current data and the network parameters are used to calculate the virtual measurement current which compensates for the output current of photovoltaic(PV).The waveform difference between the virtual measured current and the terminal current for internal and external faults is used to construct the protection method.An improved edit distance algorithm is proposed to measure the similarity between virtual measurement current and terminal measurement current.Finally,the feasibility of the protection method is verified through PSCAD simulation. 展开更多

This study investigated the feasibility of distance protection in extra-high voltage(EHV) networks. In long-distance transmission lines, the distributed parameter characteristic of the EHV network is obvious. When a fault occurs far away from the measurement site, the measured impedance might not be directly proportional to the fault distance, and the protection domain of distance protection will be decreased. The detailed theory inferred and proven in this paper reveals that this phenomenon is widespread in EHV transmission lines. The results indicate that the protection domain error is greatly reduced by the application of the shunt reactor. Overall, simulation results show that the proposed method is effective for impedance relay, considering different characteristics, different lengths of lines, and compensation degrees. 展开更多

This paper proposed the scheme of transmission lines distance protection based on differential equation algorithms (DEA) and Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). The measured impedance based on EDA is affected by various factors, such as the distributed capacitance, the transient response characteristics of current transformer and voltage transformer, etc. In order to overcome this problem, the proposed scheme applies HHT to improve the apparent impedance estimated by DEA. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is used to decompose the data set from DEA into the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) and the residue. This residue has monotonic trend and is used to evaluate the impedance of faulty line. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves significantly the accuracy of the estimated impedance. 展开更多

Over Head transmission line (OHTL) is the most part in the power system that faces the disturbances, which can be protected by multi-protection functions as line differential function, distance protection function, over current, earth fault, over/under voltage etc. The distance protection function is depending on the line voltage and the load current to calculate the load zone. According to the specific geological condition, analyzed the stress distribution of the overlying strata, the displacement of pressure released seam, thickness variation and the distribution of plastic zones by FLAG3D software to simulate mining of the long-distance lower protective seam. The research results show that the distribution of vertical stress appears as a "Double-hump" within the pressure-relief range of the protected coal seam and the swelling deformation curve of coal bodies takes an "M" shape. The swelling is divided into initial swelling, swelling increase and swelling compression stability. The maximum swelling ratio of the pressure released seam is 1.84%, protection angle of the lower protective coal seam along the strike direction is about 55°, protection angle below the dip direction is about 50°, protection angle above the dip direction is about 55°, and the coal seam compression zone resembles a "U" shape. 展开更多

A hybrid UHVDC transmission system applying LCC as the rectifier and MMC as the inverter combines the advantages of both converter types,which makes this protection scheme more complicated.A new pilot protection scheme for a three-terminal hybrid DC transmission system applying energy functions is proposed.The energy function for LCC is applied to MMC to derive the energy level of the hybrid system.Furthermore,an improved Hausdorff distance(IHD)algorithm is proposed to detect the difference in energy levels between the normal and fault states.An abrupt change in energy level is characterized by IHD change rate.Time points at which the IHD change rate exceeds the threshold at converter stations are applied to determine the fault line and to estimate the fault section.The proposed protection scheme is then verified by a simulation model of the Wudongde±800 kV three-terminal hybrid UHVDC transmission project.The appropriate sampling frequency is selected for a real-time calculation,and the threshold is selected considering the effect of noise.Results show the proposed scheme can identify and trip fault lines quickly and effectively,even for a 600Ωgrounding fault.Other waveshape similarity algorithms are compared and analyzed.Compared with existing protection schemes,the proposed scheme transmits less data to improve communication speed and reliability. 展开更多

The distributed capacitance of the line becomes larger as the scale of wind farms,the transmission voltage level,and the transmission distance increase.Hence,the error of the traditional time-domain distance protection scheme based on the R-L model,which ignores the distributed capacitance of the line,becomes unacceptable.Therefore,the error of the time-domain fault location method based on the R-L model,especially the maximum error range,is theoretically analyzed in this paper.On this basis,a novel fault location method based on the RL and Bergeron models is proposed.Then,a fast time-domain distance protection scheme is designed.In the proposed scheme,the error in the fitting calculation is used to construct a weight matrix,and an algorithm for solving the time-domain differential equations is designed to improve the calculation speed and stability.Compared with the traditional frequency-domain distance protection scheme,the proposed scheme is independent of the power supply characteristics;thus,it is suitable for wind farm transmission lines.In addition,compared with the traditional method based on the R-L model,the proposed scheme effectively avoids the negative influence of the distributed capacitance of the line,which significantly improves the operating speed.Different types of faults are simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed scheme. 展开更多

Battery energy storage stations(BESSs)pose sever-al challenges for both phasor-based differential protection and the newly-proposed time-domain differential protection.These challenges include low sensitivity and even rejection.Besides,the negative impact of various nonideal conditions,including current transformer(CT)saturation,errors,and outliers,on the security of differential protection remains an important problem.Motivated by the aforementioned issues,this study accounts for the trajectory distribution discrepancy on Cartesian plane under various conditions and proposes a time-domain differential protection method.In this paper,the trajectory formed by operating and restraining current samples is devel-oped.Subsequently,after considering different operating states,the fault severity levels,and nonideal conditions,the variances in trajectory distribution between internal and external faults are extensively analyzed.On this basis,the Cartesian plane is divided into operating,uncertainty,and restraining zones.Further,the operating and restraining trajectory indices are meticu-lously designed and a protection criterion based on these indices is formed to accurately separate internal faults from other events,unaffected by CT saturation,errors,and outliers.The exceptional performance of the proposed protection method is extensively validated through PSCAD simulations and a hard-ware-in-the-loop testing platform.Regarding the dependability,sensitivity,and security,the proposed protection method outper-forms three state-of-the-art differential protection methods. 展开更多

This paper presents a technique that increases the second-zone coverage of distance relays without causing overreach problems. The technique is based on the impedance seen by distance relays when faults are simulated on the reach of zone-1 relays. The approach checks the relay operation for the maximum as well as the minimum generation outputs of the power system. The proposed technique can be used for different reach setting for zone-1. Results show that it is possible to increase the coverage provided by zone-2 distance relays without causing coordination problems with the primary relays that protect the lines emanating from the remote bus. The proposed method is modified for use in an adaptive protection system. It is shown that further improvements can be achieved when settings are calculated using the proposed method and the prevailing system conditions. The proposed method and its adaptive version were applied to a part of the Power system. The simulation of the system is done by using PSCAD-EMTDC software. The simulated results are observed and compared with the conventional and proposed technique. 展开更多

The development of a computer program for evaluation of lightning safety distance between the tower and satellite dish is written in M-File MATLAB. The 3-dimensional illustrative graphics model is used to capture better understanding on how lightning protection system (LPS) works. The study of physical length of grounding electrode used on the tower is found to be significantly affecting the grounding system performances where they depend on magnitude of dispersed lightning strikes current and the settling time for the current to completely disperse. The grounding system performance is studied by using lightning impulse current (LIC) generator, simulated in OrCad PSpice software. It is found that the optimum length of vertical lightning rod in LPS is the same with the striking distance. There is no significant improvement is observed in lightning safety distance if the length of vertical lightning rod is higher than striking distance. The lightning strike peak current that has larger magnitude than the withstanding insulation level of specified object causes no physical damage. It is because the lightning safety distance increases when the lightning strike peak current becomes higher. It is also found that the lower grounding impedance generates higher magnitude of dispersed peak current and faster settling time. 展开更多

Blackout Prevention by Power Swing Detection and Out-of-Step Protection

Power swing evoked by sudden changes like faults or switching operations will become more and more important for protective relaying, due to the growing load flow in electrical power networks. Unwanted trips of the distance protection function must be avoided to prevent cascading effects and blackouts in the network. Selective out-of-step-tripping is required to stop unstable power swing and to prevent damage to affected generators. Therefore a reliable method for detection of power swing is presented, which requires no settings for operation. Power swing can be detected from 0.1 Hz up to 10 Hz swing frequency, also during open pole condition and during asymmetrical operation. A blocking logic prevents unselective trips by the distance protection. However, faults that occur during a power swing must be detected and cleared with a high degree of selectivity and dependability. For unstable power swing a flexible out of step tripping function will be proposed. The coordination of power swing detection, distance protection and out of step protection provides a reliable system protection. 展开更多

With the use of above transducers together with MUs, the performance of distance protection function and line differential protection function have been investigated and presented. The impedance element in distance protection equipment in the outgoing line of a wind park(WP)may be heavily affected by the fault response of the WP.During resistive grid faults,relay over-reach(or under-reach)may manifest,depending on the fault current regulating requirements in the specific grid code deployed in WP and the fault conditions.Aiming at potential solution,i.e.the existing zone 1(fast tripping zone,non-delayed)top-line tilting(Z-1-TLT)function in modern numerical relays,this paper first assesses its adaptability under the WP integrated background.Combining the principle of Z-1-TLT itself and fault modeling to the WP,an improved Z-1-TLT scheme is developed,which can actively compensate for the possible relay overreach or under-reach during resistive faults,utilizing relay side fault quantities only.Aiming at the needless action of the new Z-1-TLT scheme against certain faults,malfunction risk area detection and dead zone detection are introduced as auxiliary criteria to optimize protective efficiency.Simulation results prove the improved Z-1-TLT scheme can effectively improve reliability of distance protection deployed in the WP outgoing line. 展开更多

大量逆变型分布式电源(Inverter Interfaced Distributed Generation,IIDG)接入配电网,传统继电保护技术的可靠性无法满足。为了提高配电网供电可靠性,适应可再生能源大量渗透的新型电力系统,针对含T形接入IIDG的配电网,文章提出了一种... 大量逆变型分布式电源(Inverter Interfaced Distributed Generation,IIDG)接入配电网,传统继电保护技术的可靠性无法满足。为了提高配电网供电可靠性,适应可再生能源大量渗透的新型电力系统,针对含T形接入IIDG的配电网,文章提出了一种自适应性的距离保护方案。分析了故障发生在不同位置对保护的影响,根据IIDG在系统发生故障时的输出特性,通过BP神经网络利用保护本地电气信息计算IIDG的输出电流,实时整定动作值。该方法由于无需与远方通信,动作速度快,并且减少了通信系统的投资。最后在MATLAB中建立了含T形接入IIDG的10 kV配电网模型,并与传统距离保护进行了对比,验证了该保护方法的优越性。 展开更多

分布式静止串联补偿器(distributed static series compensator,DSSC)通过调节注入线路的电压可改变线路功率,优化电网潮流分布。针对现有交流线路保护算法难以适应DSSC串入线路运行的问题,提出了抑制DSSC对线路保护影响的方法。首先,... 分布式静止串联补偿器(distributed static series compensator,DSSC)通过调节注入线路的电压可改变线路功率,优化电网潮流分布。针对现有交流线路保护算法难以适应DSSC串入线路运行的问题,提出了抑制DSSC对线路保护影响的方法。首先,分析了DSSC对交流线路保护的影响,证明了DSSC注入电压可能改变距离保护的阻抗测量值,导致距离保护有拒动或误动的风险。然后,提出了利用DSSC本体过流保护快速将DSSC旁路、或基于故障辅助判据主动将DSSC注入电压降为0的方法,以抑制不同类型的线路故障时DSSC对线路保护的影响。最后,基于硬件在环RTDS实时仿真平台以及浙江湖州DSSC示范工程现场进行试验,验证了所提抑制DSSC对交流线路保护影响的方法的有效性。 展开更多
