The study focused on the hydrological assess...The hydrology of the Little Ruaha River which is a major catchment of the Ihemi Cluster in the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SA-GCOT) has been studied. The study focused on the hydrological assessment through analysis of the available data and developing a model that could be used for assessing impacts of environmental change. Pressures on land and water resources in the watershed are increasing mainly as a result of human activities, and understanding the hydrological regime is deemed necessary. In this study, modeling was conducted using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in which meteorological and streamflow data were used in the simulation, calibration and evaluation. Calibration and evaluation was done at three gauging stations and the results were deemed plausible with NSE ranging between 0.64 and 0.80 for the two stages. The simulated flows were used for gap filling the missing data and generation of complete daily time series of streamflow at three gauging stations of Makalala, Ihimbu and Mawande. Results of statistical trends and flow duration curves, revealed decline in magnitudes of seasonal and annual flows indicating that streamflows are changing with time and may have implications on envisioned development and the water dependent ecosystems.展开更多

The correcting process is divided into two stages: bad pixel detection and bad pixel compensation. The proposed detection algorithm is a combination of median filtering and statistic method. Single frame median filtering is used to locate approximate map, then statistic method and threshold value is used to get the accurate location map of bad pixels. When the bad pixel detection is done, neighboring pixel replacement algorithm is used to compensate them in real-time. The effectiveness of this approach is test- ed by applying it to I-IgCATe infrared video. Experiments on real infrared imaging sequences demonstrate that the proposed algorithm requires only a few frames to obtain high quality corrections. It is easy to combine with traditional static methods, update the pre-defined location map in real-time.展开更多

Data on accumulation and concentration of chemical compounds recorded in an essentially unexplored area(Dome Argus)of the Indian Ocean sector of eastern Antarctica during the past 2,680 years(680 B.C. to 1999 A.D.) ar...Data on accumulation and concentration of chemical compounds recorded in an essentially unexplored area(Dome Argus)of the Indian Ocean sector of eastern Antarctica during the past 2,680 years(680 B.C. to 1999 A.D.) are presented. During the first 1, 700 years(680 B. C. to 1000 A. D.), the accumulation data shows a slightly decreasing trend, while chemical ions appear to be stable, representing a stable climatic condition. An intensive increasing trend of the accumulation occurred during the 12^(th) to 14^(th) century. The period from 15^(th) to 19^(th) century was characterized by a rapid reducing accumulation and concentrations of volatile compounds suffering post-depositional loss linked to sparse precipitation amount,which was temporally consistent with the Little Ice Age(LIA) episode. Comparison between observed accumulation rates with other eastern Antarctic ice cores show a consistent decreasing trend during LIA, while sea salt and dust-originated ions increased due to sea ice extent and intensified atmospheric transportation. Distribution of volcanic originated sulfate over the Antarctic continent show a significant change during the 15^(th) century, coincident with the onset of the LIA. These results are important for the assessment of Antarctic continent mass balance and associated interpretation of the Dome A deep ice core records.展开更多

Sex differences in morphology provide key information for understanding a species'morphological adaptations in relation to the evolution of sexual selection.In migratory birds,morphological traits have adapted to ...Sex differences in morphology provide key information for understanding a species'morphological adaptations in relation to the evolution of sexual selection.In migratory birds,morphological traits have adapted to long-distance travel,and sexual dimorphism is typically related to sex-differential migration phenology.Little Buntings(Emberiza pusilla)have one of the longest migrations and are the least dichromatic species among the Emberiza buntings.In this study,we measured sexual size dimorphism and sexual dichromatism of Little Buntings in relation to the spring arrival dates at a stopover site in Korea.Wing length was the most important predictor for identifying sex;the wings of males were longer than those of females.Males also had a significantly stronger chestnut color of the head feathers than females,but this color difference was more prominent in the spring than in the fall.Males arrived earlier than females by four days.Arrival dates correlated with both size and color,but unlike other bunting species previously studied in the same area,there was no clear sex-differential trend in the relationship between arrival date and morphological characteristics.Seasonal differences in the degree of sexual dichromatism suggest that chestnut plumage coloration can be used as a social or sexual signal of males in the breeding season.The correlation of size and color to early arrival regardless of sex may indicate that a preference for assortative mating exists or that a sex-differential migration strategy is not clearly defined in the early stages of northward migration.Our findings on the sexual dimorphism of Little Buntings provide insight into the evolution of the sex-differential migration of buntings in the East Asian Flyway.展开更多

There remain many rainstorm records in southern coast of Japan, and south-eastern coast of China. Both in Japan and China, many rainstorm disasters appeared in summer. But, they usually appeared one or two months later in Japan. The period of frequent windstorm damage occurrence in Little Ice Age differs among Japan and China, and it was caused by the change of atmospheric circulation. Cool summer period appeared around 1705, 1740, 1765, 1785, 1830, and 1845. It was generally cool before 1855, but it became warm after 1855. Methods: In order to confirm whether TIP30conducted Bcl-2 family was involved in apoptosis signal pathway, MTT assay, in situ 3' end labellingof DNA assay and Western blot were carried out to detect the diverse apoptotic function of TIP30and the regulation of Bcl-2 family. Results: TIP30 induced apoptosis as evidenced by morphologicalchanges in hepatoblastoma cells, which was accompanied by up-regulating Bax and Bad proteins andstimulating them from cytoplasm to mitochondria, and down-regulating Bcl-xl, while it had no effecton the level of Bak protein. Conclusion: TIP30 induced apoptosis partly by modulating the proteinlevels of members of Bcl-2 family in hepatoblastoma cells. Elucidating the mechanism by which TIP30induces cell death might establish it as an anticancer factor.展开更多
