Black wheat variety Heibaoshi 1 had the highest total phenolic content(659.8 μg gallic acid equivalents g-1), total flavonoid content(319.3 μg rutin equivalents g-1), and antioxidant activity, whereas light purple wheat variety Shandongzimai 1 had the lowest total flavonoid content(236.2 μg rutin equivalents g-1) and antioxidant activity. Whole wheat flour and partially debranned grain flour had significantly higher total phenolic contents, total flavonoid contents, and antioxidant activity than refined flour(P < 0.05). Compared with flour, total phenolic contents, total flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity decreased in noodles and steamed bread, whereas noodles had slightly higher total phenolic and flavonoid content than steamed bread. Antioxidant activities(by ferric reducing ability of plasma assay) of steamed bread made from whole wheat flour, partially debranned grain flour, and refined flour were 23.5%, 21.1%, and 31.6% lower, respectively, than the corresponding values of flour. These results suggested that black whole wheat flour and partially debranned grain flour are beneficial to human health.展开更多

Methods: Total phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the in vitro antioxidant activity of a number of different extracts was investigated in a dose-dependent manner with three different methods: the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt(ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) assays. A flavone was isolated from the most active ethanolic extract with high antioxidant activity using size exclusion chromatography. IC_(50) values were calculated for the DPPH and ABTS methods. The FRAP activity was assessed in terms of μM Fe(II) equivalent. Results: The phenolic content was found to be highest in the ethanol extract(CDA Et; 47.8 mM GAE) and the lowest in the dichloromethane extract(CDA DCM; 3.13 mM GAE). The ethanol extract showed high radical scavenging activity towards DPPH and ABTS radicals with IC_(50) values of(7.80 × 10~2) and(4.32 × 10~2) μg/m L, respectively. The most active ethanol extract had a FRAP value of 1 921.7 μM Fe(Ⅱ) equivalent. The isolated flavone F10C(5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3'-methoxy flavone) was far more effective for scavenging free radicals in the DPPH and ABTS assays with IC_(50) of 43.8 and 0.08 μg/m L, than the standard trolox, with IC_(50) values of 97.5 and 21.1 μg/m L, respectively. In addition, the flavone F10C and the standard ascorbic acid had FRAP values of 1 621.7 and 16 038.0 μM Fe(Ⅱ) equivalents, respectively. Conclusions: The total phenolic content of extracts in decreasing order is ethanol extract(CDA Et)> acetone extract(CDA ACE)> phenolic extract(CDA MW)> n-hexane extract(CDA nHX)> chloroform extract(CDA CHL)> dichloromethane extract(CDA DCM). The ordering of extracts in terms of antioxidant activity from highest to lowest is CDA Et> CDA MW> CDA DCM> CDA CHL> CDA ACE> CDA nHX in DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. A significant relationship is found between antioxidant potential and total phenolic content, suggesting that phenolic compounds are the major contributors to the antioxidant activity of Coronopus didymus.展开更多

The TFs exhibited a high scavenging effect on 2, 2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (?DPPH) with IC50 values 0.01 mg/mL, and a stong reduce power in the test. Hyperli-pemic mice were intragastric administrated with TFs (25, 50 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks, and fenofi-brate was used as the positive reference sub-stance. After the experiment, the levels of TC (total cholesterol), TG (triglyceride), LDL- C (low density lipoprotein-cholesterol) of the mice ad-ministrated with high-dose of TFs were mark-edly declined by 45.02%, 33.86% and 73.68%, re-spectively, while HDL-C (high density lipopro-tein-cholesterol) was significantly increased com-pared with model group. To investigate the hepatoprotective effect, histopathological assay, ALT (alanine aminotransferase), AST (aspartate aminotransefrase) and ALP (alkaline phosphatase) were also studied, and the results showed that TFs exhibited a favorable effect on liver protec-tion, of which the levels of ALT, AST and ALP were elevated by 55.85%, 29.15% and 25.68%, respectively. Furthermore, the TFs could sig-nificantly decrease the MDA (malondialdehyde) level and improve the levels of CAT (Catalas), SOD (superoxide dismutase), GSH (reduced glutathione), and GPX (glutathione peroxidase) compared with hyperlipemia mice. Our results suggested that TFs has a high antioxidant ac-tivity and hypolipidemic activity, which can be used as a potential medicine for cardiovascular diseases.展开更多

Gamma irradiation was applied at various dose levels (5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 25.0 kGy) on pomegranate peel powder. Both the values of total phenolic content and in vitro antioxi- dant activity were positively correlated and showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) for 10.0 kGy irradiated dose level immediately after irradiation and 60 days of post irradiation storage. At 5.0 kGy and above dose level, gamma irradia- tion has reduced microbial count of pomegranate peel powder to nil. Post irradiation storage studies also showed that, the irradiated peel powder was microbiologically safe even after 90 days of storage period.展开更多

In the sample preparation, 60% ethanol was chosen as the extraction solvent for the subsequent experiments. Folin-Cicolteau phenol reagent and a colorimetric method were used to determine the total phenolic content of the selected herbs. The result showed that total phenolic content of those herbs ranged from 2 to 185 mg/g. In antioxidant assay, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) values ranged from 2 to 134 mg GAE/g;the IC50 values of DPPH?·, ·OH and ?scavenging were in the range of 0.06 - 5.50 mg/mL, 0.017 - 0.636 mg/mL and 0.050 - 0.681 mg/mL respectively. Flos caryophylli was the exceptant in the ?scavenging assay because there was no linear relation between the concentration and the scavenging percentage. Compared to gallic acid, ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in antioxidant assay as positive control, the most potential antioxidant herbs were Cacumen platycladi, Radix et Rhizoma rhei, Rhizoma rhodiolae crenulatae, and Rhizoma sanguisorbae with considerable content of phenolics. Especially, a positive and significant correlation was found between the total phenolic content and FRAP value or DPPH· scavenging percentage.展开更多

Most purple tea consumers usually brew the tea leaves then add some lemon juice before consuming it. Citric acid was used here to mimic the use of lemon juice. Documentation on the quality of such a brew is scanty and the effect of acid on its quality is equally scanty. The current study used brewing time/temperature combinations of 5, 10 and 15 minutes with 70°C and 92°C drinking water. Total monomeric anthocyanins were analysed using UV-1800 spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, Japan) while DDPH method was used to assay for antioxidant activity. Citric acid concentration of 0, 0.1% to 0.5% was used to check their effect on the brews with the highest total anthocyanins and antioxidant activity. The results showed that brewing temperature of 70°C had 9.5 mg/L to 27.7 mg/L, with 5 minutes brewing time being the highest. Temperature of 92°C had 37.5 mg/L to 92 mg/L with 5 minutes brewing time having the highest total monomeric anthocyanins. Antioxidant activity of 92°C brewing temperature ranged from 90.7% to 92.0%. Total monomeric anthocyanins increased with increased citric acid concentration up to 0.3% before it decreases while for antioxidant activity, it decreased with addition of citric acid. It was concluded that for maximum anthocyanins extraction, 5 minutes brewing time is the best while ten minutes brewing time could give optimum antioxidant activity.展开更多

文摘Objective: To evaluate the total phenolic content and compare the antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts and fractions from the aerial parts of Coronopus didymus through various assays. A significant relationship is found between antioxidant potential and total phenolic content, suggesting that phenolic compounds are the major contributors to the antioxidant activity of Coronopus didymus.

文摘The present study was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the essential oils and ethanol extracts of Ocimum basilicum L.obtained from Assiut,Minia and BeniSuef of Egypt. The major constituents of sweet basil essential oils from three locations were linalool, estragole, methyl cinnamate,bicyclosesquiphellandrene,eucalyptol,-bergamotene,eugenol,-cadinene and germacrene D by the method of GC–MS.The relative concentration of these compounds varies. The basil extracts contained appreciable levels of total phenolic contents and exhibited good DPPH radical scavenging capacity higher than that of essential oils. The highest TPC(82.45 mg PE/g)and maximum radical scavenging activity with IC50 value(1.29 mg/mL)was obtained from Minia basil extract.High correlation between antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of basil extracts was observed.High variation in free radical scavenging activity of essential oils was found. The essential oil from Minia basil showed high activity in DPPH radical scavenging with IC50(11.23 mg/mL)and contained the highest content of phenolic(41.3 mg PE/g).On contrary, low correlation between antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of basil essential oils from different locations. The results of the present investigation demonstrated significant variations in the antioxidant activities of sweet basil essential oils and extracts from Egypt.
文摘In the present work, the antioxidant activity in vitro and hypolipidemic activity of the total fla-vonoids (TFs) from the Rosa laevigata Michx fruit was evaluated, and the antioxidant effect in vivo was also discussed. Our results suggested that TFs has a high antioxidant ac-tivity and hypolipidemic activity, which can be used as a potential medicine for cardiovascular diseases.
文摘Pomegranate peels were studied for the effect of gamma irradiation on microbial decontamination along with its effect on total phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant activity. Post irradiation storage studies also showed that, the irradiated peel powder was microbiologically safe even after 90 days of storage period.

文摘[Objectives]This study was conducted to study the total polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity of different extraction fractions of Pholidota chinensis.[Methods]Different polar fractions of P.chinensis were obtained by ultrasonic extraction method, and determined for polyphenol contents by UV spectrophotometry, and their antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP).SPSS analysis software was used to analyze the correlation between total polyphenol contents and antioxidant activity of different extracts.[Results]The contents of total polyphenols in different polar fractions ranged from 1.52 to 6.41 mg/g,and the order from low to high was:water<petroleum ether<ethyl acetate<95%ethanol.The reduction capacity of the total antioxidant capacity method ranged from 12.54 to 22.45μmol/L,and the order was 95%ethanol>ethyl acetate>petroleum ether>water. The DPPH median inhibition concentration ranged from 0.35 to 2.65 mg/ml,and the order was water>petroleum ether>ethyl acetate>95%ethanol.The total polyphenol content of P.chinensis was best in the 95%ethanol extraction fraction, which showed the strongest total antioxidant capacity,so the total polyphenol content of the 95%ethanol fraction was positively correlated with its antioxidant capacity, while the DPPH free radical-scavenging capacity was better in the water fraction, indicating that the free radical-scavenging capacity of the water fraction was better.[Conclusions]This study provides a theoretical basis for the further study of the chemical components of P.chinensis and the development and utilization of natural antioxidants.
文摘This study was designed to determine the total phenolic content of 50 herbs and to examine their antioxidant potential. Especially, a positive and significant correlation was found between the total phenolic content and FRAP value or DPPH· scavenging percentage.
文摘A study was conducted to find out the effect of citric acid on total monomeric anthocyanins and antioxidant activity of liquor made from unprocessed purple-leafed TRFK 306 Kenyan tea, brewed at various time/temperature combinations. It was concluded that for maximum anthocyanins extraction, 5 minutes brewing time is the best while ten minutes brewing time could give optimum antioxidant activity.
文摘In this study, in vitro antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and concentration of flavonoids of four different extracts of Adina cordifolia (Roxb.) were determined using spectrophotometric methods. Antioxidant activity of extracts was expressed as percentage of DPPH radicals’ inhibition and IC50 values (μg/ml). IC50 values ranged from 20.39 to 38.96 μg/ml. The total phenolic content ranged from 17.48 to 20.83 mg/g of dry weight of extract, expressed as gallic acid equivalents. The total flavonoid concentrations varied from 17.49 to 22.48 mg/g, expressed as quercetin equivalents. The significant linear correlation was confirmed between the values for the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of plant extracts. Adina cordifolia (Roxb.) can be regarded as promising candidates for natural plant sources of antioxidants with high value.

文摘In this study, the total phenols (TP) and antioxidant activity of three different fruit smoothies (Blackberries, Raspberry and Boysenberry (BRAB), Mango and Passion fruits (MAP) and Blackcurrant, Acerola cherries and Rosehips (BACAR)) were determined during storage by Folin-Ciocalteu and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays respectively. TP ranged from 1,943 to 2,692 mg L-1 gallic acid equivalent whereas FRAP from 43,217 to 126,125 μmol L-1 Trolox equivalent for the three smoothies on opening. BACAR had the highest TP and antioxidant activity. The smoothies showed significant decrease (P 〈 0.05) in TP during storage. The decrease in antioxidant activity was significant (P 〈 0.05) for BRAB and MAP only. However, the study revealed that the smoothies had high antioxidant activity even during shelf-life at 4 ℃ which implies that consumption of smoothies may give considerable antioxidant benefits. Correlation between TP and antioxidant activity was strong and highly significant (r = 0.890, P 〈 0.0001).

文摘Objective:To investigate the changes in total phenols, flavonoids, tannins, vitamin E, β-carotene and antioxidant activity during soaking of three white sorghum varieties. Methods: The changes in total phenols, total ilavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids compounds, flavonoid components, vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity during soaking of sorghum grains were determined. Results:Total phenols, total flavonoids, tannins, vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity in raw sorghum were ranged from 109.21 to 116.70,45.91 to 54.69,1.39 to 21.79 mg/100 g,1.74 to 5.25,0.54 to 1.19 mg/kg and 21.72%to 27.69%and 25.29%to 31.97%,respectively. The above measured compounds were significantly decreased after soaking.p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid and cinnamic acid represent the major phenolic acids in Dorado variety. While ferulic acid,p-coumaric acid, gallic acid and caffeic acid represent the major phenolic acids in Shandaweel-6.On the other hand, protocatechuic acid represents the major phenolic acids in Giza-15.Regarding flavonoids components,Dorado was the highest variety in kampferol and naringenin while Shandaweel-6 was the highest variety in luteolin, apigenin, hypersoid, quercelin and christen.Finally,Giza-15 was the highest variety in catechin. Phenolic acids, flavonoid compounds and antioxidant activities were decreased after soaking. Conclusions:Sorghum varieties have moderate quantities from total phenols, total flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids compounds, flavonoid components, vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity which decreased after soaking.

文摘The anthocyanin pigment extracted from green-wheat-bran was studied to identify its antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activities of the pigment were evaluated by anti-lipid peroxidation, total antioxidant activity (TAA),superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (SARSA),active oxygen scavenging activity (AOSA),and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl free radical) radical scavenging activity. The results showed that the pigment had higher antioxidant activity and TAA,SARSA,AOSA and DPPH.scavenging activities at a certain concentration than Vc (antiscorbutic vitamin, vitamin C),and the capacity increased with the increase of pigment concentration. Its TAA was 51.06 U mL-1,1.73 times of Vc,and SARSA 18 025.21 U mL-1,2.26% higher than Vc,and AOSA 3 776.31 U mL-1,1.24 times of Vc.As to the DPPH.scavenging activity of the pigment, there was a trend that higher concentration performed higher activity significantly improved with the company of Vc.The pigment showed significant antioxidant activities evaluated by different assays. Results will provide a better understanding on antioxidant activity of green wheat and allow the screening or breeding of green wheat varieties with higher antioxidant activity for food processing.
