Material Analysis of Traditional Folk Dwellings and Its Modern Inheritance:A Case Study of Traditional Folk Dwellings in Hunan Province

Traditional folk dwellings contain rich cultural connotations and plain architectural techniques.In architecture,material is the most fundamental thing,different materials can demonstrate different architectural forms,and reflect local characteristics and change of the time.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the material selection of traditional Chinese folk dwellings.The paper took traditional folk dwellings in Hunan for example to analyze the regional materials and construction of these dwellings,discussed the application of traditional materials in modern architecture,used some cases to explore the innovative application of traditional materials,so as to figure out the new direction of applying traditional materials,and provide references for the construction of modern architecture.

Influence of patio on indoor environment in a Chinese traditional folk house in summer

A case study is performed on the influence of the patio on the indoor environment of a traditional folk house group,named Zhangguying village in Hunan province,in the summer of 2007.Measurements include indoor and outdoor air temperature,indoor and outdoor illuminance,indoor and outdoor air speed,and carried out from August 5th to 10th.The results show that the patio,acting as a ＂buffer zone＂,can reduce the ambient impacts on the indoor thermal environment of rooms because the temperature of the patio is lower than that of the outdoor temperature but higher than that of the rooms.The patio can improve the indoor lighting environment because the illuminance of the patio is lower than that of outdoor and higher than that of the rooms.But the effect is too limited,because the illuminance of the rooms is lower than the national standards.This study shows that the shading design is the primary consideration in this kind of climate.The wind speed of the patio is stable and similar to that of the hall and the stack effect of the patio is not obvious.It shows that the patio is useful for natural ventilation,caused by wind pressure,in summer.

Influence of site selection on natural ventilation in Chinese traditional folk house

The relationship between the site selection of a hilly terrain and the natural ventilation of the Dangdamen building complex,which is a traditional folk house,is revealed by a computational fluid dynamics（CFD）simulation.The wind press and speed distributions around the building in four cases with different weather conditions and topographies are simulated.The simulation results show that a hill can reduce the absolute values of the wind pressure at the windward and leeward sides of the building.The encouraging effect of the patio on the natural ventilation in a terrain with a hill is greater than that without a hill.The same situation occurs when comparing the patio effects between summer and winter.The wind speed around the building can be reduced by the hill as it is an obstacle and the degrees of the influence of the hill in summer and in winter are quite different because of different wind directions.The analysis results show that this kind of site selection,with the hill to the north,is a suitable way to settle the conflict of the natural ventilation requirements in summer and in winter under subtropical climate conditions,especially in houses with patios.

Study on Features of Traditional Folk Dwellings in Yimeng Mountainous Areas

Traditional folk dwellings in Yimeng mountainous areas in south Shandong were studied,the formation factors and characteristics analyzed according to the existing folk dwellings,then advantages and disadvantages of thatched cottages in the local area expounded,which is signifi cant for the inheritance of traditional folk dwellings in south Shandong and the folk dwelling design in the new countryside.

Culture of Traditional Folk Houses' Door Ornament from the Perspective of Cultural Geography

Door is an important ingredient of Chinese traditional folk houses. It not only embodies the form, color, decoration and other material forms, but reflects the folklore, beliefs, geomancy and other cultural concepts. From the perspective of cultural geography, the culture of traditional folk houses' door ornament was studied by using the theory of cultural landscape. Based on the field investigation of remaining folk houses in central part of Shanxi, the Huizhou area and southwestern of China, this paper explores the geographical features of traditional folk houses' door ornament and analyzes the cultural landscape with dynamic characteristics of the door ornament. It is hoped that this paper will perfect the study of traditional residential culture.

The Charm of Suzhou’s Traditional Folk Houses

JIANGNAN or regions south of the Yangtze River’s lower reaches, is an area with green hills and limpid waters. It has long been the epitome of natural beauty and fertility. Waterways are the main means of transportation here as the land is divided by canals into a checkerboard. Under these natural conditions, locals designed and built their houses in a unique way, the design of which gave rise to the Suzhou traditional folk house architectural style. The houses are usually not wide and have a deep interior. The layout and scale of each house varies, depending on the wealth of its owner. When seen from a distance, the cluster of houses presents an irregular beauty densely decorating the small areas of land in the region.

Research on Characteristics of Sichuan Folk Traditional Bed

Bed is one of the important types of Sichuan folk furniture, which is mostly used in daily life. The detailed information of Sichuan folk traditional bed was achieved through literature review, field investigation and expert interview methods. Then Characteristic and style, including material, shape, craft and pattern of Sichuan folk traditional bed were analyzed through linking and discussing the relationship among natural environment, economic environment, historical background, cultural background and religious beliefs. Conclusion on types, techniques and patterns of Sichuan folk traditional bed were drawn finally.

Reverberating Chinese Traditional Folk Art in a Contemporary Context

Envisioned as a practice-based research, this paper explored Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts with a focus on traditional decorative patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs that enliven Foshan style paper-cuttings, New Year wood block prints, paper kites, festival lanterns, and Shiwan pottery figures from the areas of Foshan and Shiwan, near Guangzhou, China. The goal of this research was to create a series of original paintings by investigating Chinese traditional folk arts and handcrafts and integrating them physically or ichnographically on Ho＇s new body of paintings. Chinese traditional motifs including Chinese characters and Buddhist iconographies had already been important motifs in the contemporary Western paintings of Kong Ho for the past 10 years. This paper examined not only the artistic, cultural, and historical values but also the impacts of Chinese traditional folk arts and era~ on Ho＇s painting through a personal research travel and studies of a certain amount of Chinese paper-cuttings, folk prints, pottery, and handcrafts found in the famous Foshan Folk Art Studio and Foshan City Shiwan Ceramics Factory in Foshan, China. Furthermore, this paper investigated the symbolic meanings founded in Ho＇s spiritual paintings with strong Chinese heritage and how he reinterpreted those artifacts in a contemporary context.

Resilience Training of Preschool Children Based on Traditional Folk Games

Ethnomedicinal Investigation of Medicinal Plants of Chakrata Region(Uttarakhand)Used in the Traditional Medicine for Diabetes by Jaunsari Tribe

The Himalayan region is the treasure house of natural wealth,particularly of medicinal and aromatic plants.These plants are used by the Indian traditional healers for the past many centuries to treat various ailments such as skin disorders,asthma,diabetes,snake bite,fever,pain,eye diseases,diarrhoea,indigestion,jaundice,burn,wound,liver disorder,CNS disorders and urinary tract infection.The indigenous traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and therapies of various local communities has been lost due to changes in traditional culture and the introduction of modern technologies.Therefore,it is essential to explore the traditional knowledge of the indigenous medicinal plants mainly in such areas where there is a severe threat to natural vegetation owing to human inhabitation.The present study aimed to explore the medicinal plants of Chakrata region(Jaunsar-Bawar Hills),Uttarakhand,India used in the folk medicine for the management of diabetes by Jaunsari Tribe.In a comprehensive feld survey,the information about the medicinal plants have been mainly collected from the traditional healers and other elderly people belong to the tribal community.All the information about the medicinal plants of the study area was documented in a feld book.Various tools have been used to collect the samples for identifcation purpose and the authentication of the plants was done with the help of taxonomists.The literature on these plants was also searched from online(PubMed and Scopus)as well as from some textbooks and Ayurvedic classical texts.The present survey-based work described a total of 54 plants belonging to 47 genera and 30 families used in the traditional medicine for the management of diabetes in Chakrata region.The information gathered from the local community revealed that the plants are efective in diabetes and one can use most of them without consulting a practitioner or traditional healer.The literature revealed that most of the surveyed plants are already used in the preparation of various antidiabetic formulations such as Chandraprabha vati,Nishamalaki chunra,Amritamehari churna and Nisakathakadi kashayam along with various patent drugs which are frequently prescribed by the Ayurvedic practitioners in India.The present study explored the traditional as well as scientifc knowledge on the antidiabetic plants used by the tribal community.The documented information on these plants can be further used by the scientifc community to develop new drugs/formulations with the help of modern techniques.

Research on Modelling Digital Paper-cut Preservation

This paper studies the model of the digital preservation of paper-cut after analyzing the state-of-the-art of the preservation of intangible cultural heritage at home and abroad, focusing on paper-cutting in Hebei, China in a comprehensive approach of sociology, anthropology, folk art, folklore, communication, computer, and information science. Models, methods, and solutions for the preservation and retention of national and folk cultural heritage are proposed. A virtual multimedia interactive system framework of the digital preservation of national and folk cultural heritage is constructed. The standards of paper-cut digitization are studied. The main content of the paper involves： regulated data collection and recording of the scattered Chinese folk paper-cut works in Hebei; digitization, optimization, compression, classification, icon and pattern extraction, vectorization, and work analysis of the first-hand material.
