Based on the kinematic wave theory and Van Aerde single-regime flow model, a model for estimating the congestion propagation speed for the basic road segment was developed. Historical traffic flow data were used to analyze the time variant characteristics of the urban traffic flow for each road type. Then, the saturation flow rate was used for analyzing the impact of the traffic incident on the traversing traffic flow at the congestion area. The base congestion propagation speed for each road type was calculated based on field data, which were provided by the remote traffic microwave sensors(RTMS), floating car data(FCD) system and screen line survey. According to a comparative analysis of the congestion propagation speed, it is found that the expressway, major arterial, minor arterial and collector are decreasingly influenced by the traffic incident. Subsequently, the impact of turning movements at intersections on the congestion propagation was considered. The turning ratio was adopted to represent the impact of turning movements, and afterward the corresponding propagation pattern at intersections was analyzed. Finally, an implementation system was designed on a geographic information system(GIS) platform to display the characteristics of the congestion propagation over the network. The validation results show that the proposed approach is able to capture the congestion propagation properties in the actual road network.展开更多

Three new congestion indicators, including transportation environment satisfaction (TES), travel time satisfaction (TTS), and traffic congestion frequency and feeling (TCFF), are defined to estimate urban traffic congestion based on travelers' feelings. Data of travelers' attitude about congestion and trip information were collected from a survey in Shanghai, China. Based on the survey data, we estimated the value of the three indi- cators. Then, the principal components analysis was used to derive a small number of linear combinations of a set of variables to estimate the whole congestion status. A linear regression model was used to find out the significant variables which impact respondents' feelings. Two ordered logit models were used to select significant variables of TES and TTS. Attitudinal factor variables were also used in these models. The results show that attitudinal factor variables and cluster category variables are as important as sociodemographic variables in the models. Using the three congestion indicators, the government can collect travelers' feeling about traffic congestion and estimate the transportation policy that might be applied to cope with traffic congestion.展开更多

The location of the bus stop in the on/off-ramp (thereafter downstream or upstream case) is discussed. The simulation results show that in the two ramp systems, the reasons for traffic congestions are different. In the on-ramp system, buses and cars coming from on-ramp interweave each other, while in the off-ramp system, buses interweave with cars exiting to off-ramp. Thus, in the on-ramp (off-ramp) system, the upstream (downstream) bus stop is helpful to reduce the interweaving situation. Moreover, the negative effect will disappear when the distance between the bus stop and the on/off-ramp is more than 20 cells (i.e. 150 m). These qualitative findings may provide some suggestions on traffic management and optimization.展开更多

Speed distribution is one of the traffic stream parameters, which has been used to quantify the traffic conditions. Previous studies have shown that multi-modal probability distribution of speeds gives excellent results when simultaneously evaluating congested and free-flow traffic conditions. However, most of these previous analytical studies do not incorporate the influencing factors in characterizing these conditions. This study evaluates the impact of traffic occupancy on the multi-state speed distribution using the Bayesian Dirichlet Process Mixtures of Generalized Linear Models (DPM-GLM). Further, the study estimates the speed cut-point values of traffic states, which separate them into homogeneous groups using Bayesian change-point detection (BCD) technique. The study used 2015 archived one-year traffic data collected on Florida’s Interstate 295 freeway corridor. Information criteria results revealed three traffic states, which were identified as free-flow, transitional flow condition (congestion onset/offset), and the congested condition. The findings of the DPM-GLM indicated that in all estimated states, the traffic speed decreases when traffic occupancy increases. Comparison of the influence of traffic occupancy between traffic states showed that traffic occupancy has more impact on the free-flow and the congested state than on the transitional flow condition. With respect to estimating the threshold speed value, the results of the BCD model revealed promising findings in characterizing levels of traffic congestion.展开更多

With ever increasing population of vehicles on road, traffic congestion is a major challenge to the economy, productivity and pollution, notwithstanding continuous developments in alternative fuels, alternative sources of energy. The research develops accurate and precise model in real time which computes congestion detection, dynamic signaling algorithm to evenly distribute vehicle densities while ensuring avoidance of starvation and deadlock situation. The model incorporates road segment length and breadth, quality and achievable average speed to compute road capacity. Vehicles installed with GPS enabled devices provide their location, which enables computing road occupancy. Road occupancy is evaluated based on number of vehicles as well as area occupied by vehicles. Ratio of road occupancy and road capacity provides congestion index important to compute signal phases. The algorithm ensures every direction is serviced once during a signaling cycle ensuring no starvation. Secondly, the definition of minimum and maximum signal timings ensures against dead lock situation. A simulator is developed to validate the proposition and proves it can ease congestion by more than 50% which is better than any of the contemporary approaches offering 15% improvement. In case of higher congestion index, alternate routes are suggested based on evaluation of traffic density graphs for shortest route or knowledge database. The algorithm to compute shortest route is optimized drastically, reducing computation cost to 3*√2N vis-à-vis computation cost of N2 by classical algorithms. The proposal brings down the cost of implementation per traffic junction from USD 30,000 to USD 2000.展开更多

Given limited resources, major airports seek to address this issue while considering various attributes generally affecting air transportation. This paper adopts fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory-analytic network process (DEMATEL-ANP) to identify the most critical attributes in the commercial aviation industry. A case study participated by key experts of Ninoy Aquino International Airport was conducted to illustrate the proposed approach. The fuzzy DEMATELANP model performed satisfactorily as it was able to extract the global priority vectors of attributes under a fuzzy environment. The results showed that aviation safety is most prioritized, as can also be seen from the significant influence it brings on other attributes. Following next to safety in terms of priority axe attributes that address the general air transportation system such as economic value, environmental value, social value, equitable treatment of competing airline, customer goodwill, and utilization of runway and terminal. Then, attributes relating to passenger cost, fuel cost, extra crew cost, landing/take-off fee, and cost of using flight routes axe of last priority. Given the order of priorities and criticality of each attribute, shortterm and long-term policies can be framed accordingly to propose air traffic flow management actions that can best address the issue on congestion.展开更多

The problem has many impacts on social, economical and development aspects of urban areas. Hence the solution to this problem is not straight forward. It requires a lot of effort, expertise, time and cost that sometime are not available. Most of the existing transportation planning software, specially the most advanced ones, requires personnel with lots practical transportation planning experience and with high level of education and training. In this paper we propose a comprehensive framework for an Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) for Traffic Congestion Management System that utilizes a state of the art transportation network equilibrium modeling and providing an easy to use GIS-based interaction environment. The developed IDSS reduces the dependability on the expertise and level of education of the transportation planners, transportation engineers, or any transportation decision makers.展开更多

Direct estimation of traffic flows requires significant efforts and knowing in advance where to focus the study and where to place tools to directly measure traffic flows, and consequently traffic congestion could lead to significant savings in time and money. In the case of Rome municipality, we have monitored a situation in which a very high rate of urban fragmentation has occurred in the last 30 years, making the direct estimation of traffic difficult. The work described here can help to solve the problem of estimating traffic flows and in particular the congestion phenomenon through a very cheap approach by using remote sensing and geographical information system technology. This method is based on the identification of attractor points that draw traffic flows such as malls, schools, offices, shops, etc. that is to say, points in a territory that attract a certain number of people with vehicles (estimated with a scale) in specific periods of the day. The identification of those points and the calculation of the urban density through the satellite image processing have allowed the creation of a congestion map for the study area. Then the road network and the buildings have been classified according to the congestion values. The results highlight the most critical and congested areas that affect the traffic flows and impact the quality of life.展开更多

The amplification of velocity disturbances in upstream direction, however, poses limitations to the minimum feasible time gap. This effect is covered by the notion of string stability. String-stable behavior is thus considered an essential requirement for the design of automatic distance control systems, which are needed to allow for safe driving at time gaps well below 1 s. Using wireless inter-vehicle communications to provide real-time information of the preceding vehicle, in addition to the information obtained by common Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) sensors, appears to significantly decrease the feasible time gap, which is shown by practical experiments with a test fleet consisting of six passenger vehicles. The large-scale deployment of this system, known as Cooperative ACC (CACC), however, poses challenges with respect to the reliability of the wireless communication system. A solution for this scalability problem can be found in decreasing the transmission power and/or beaconing rate, or adapting the communications protocol. Although the main CACC objective is to increase road throughput, the first commercial application of CACC is foreseen to be in truck platooning, since short distance following is expected to yield significant fuel savings in this case.展开更多

The proposal brings down the cost of implementation per traffic junction from USD 30,000 to USD 2000.

文摘The constant growth of air travel in the Philippines has brought about significant consequences to air traffic congestion. Given the order of priorities and criticality of each attribute, shortterm and long-term policies can be framed accordingly to propose air traffic flow management actions that can best address the issue on congestion.
文摘Traffic congestion problem is one of the major problems that face many transportation decision makers for urban areas. The developed IDSS reduces the dependability on the expertise and level of education of the transportation planners, transportation engineers, or any transportation decision makers.
文摘Mobility is an indispensable activity of our daily lives and road transport is one popular approach to mobility. However road congestion occurrence can be irritating and costly. This work contributes to the modeling and therefore predicting road congestion of a Ghanaian urban road by way of queuing theory using stochastic process and initial value problem framework. The approach is used to describe performance measure parameters, allowing the prediction of the level of queue built up at a signalized intersection as an insight into road vehicular congestion there and how such congestion occurrence can be efficiently managed.
文摘Traffic flows form a complex system, especially in the context of urban sprawl. The results highlight the most critical and congested areas that affect the traffic flows and impact the quality of life.
文摘New York, London, Paris and Tokyo, these world-class cities have traffic congestion problems. Paper pointed out that the main reason for traffic jams is incompatible with transport planning and transport development, the Metropolitan Transportation properly classified according to physical distance, to borrow the metaphor of Chinese classical culture, that “pie”, “Gun Xiuqiu”, “sword cut” and “kite flying” and four are independent, interconnected transportation planning program. Use of an important node in the network traffic, the transportation planning program four seamless integration, expanding the concept of traffic, build traffic new venues to meet the sea, land and waited in vain for multi-functional travel needs through one-way loop that Basic theory, integrated network group, established metropolitan cellular transport network system, with sophisticated network management software, intelligent transportation and immediate traffic management methods to various means of transportation in big cities of the diversion of human nature, which break the cities Traffic congestion, to achieve smooth traffic international cities.
文摘In today’s society where the economy is developing rapidly and the process of urbanization is accelerating, the traffic in major cities in China is facing tremendous pressure. The economy of Beijing has developed rapidly, its population is dense, the living standard of people has improved significantly, and the number of cars has increased dramatically. From the end of 2005 to the end of November 2010,motor vehicles in Beijing increased from about 2.58 million to about 4.69 million. The problem of traffic congestion has become more prominent, affecting the daily lives of the residents.
文摘On the basis of analyzing connotation of congestion pricing, through the qualitative analysis of the main content and implementation effect of the congestion policy in cities such as Singapore,London and Stockholm, the basic conditions for urban congestion charges were summarized.Compared with Beijing’s urban development, traffic development status, urban transport infrastructure and social factors, the current policy of traffic congestion charging is still not available from the perspective of the current status of car ownership in Beijing, residents’ travel composition, and population density distribution.

文摘To alleviate the resulting increase in energy consumption and emissions and other issues caused by the traffic congestion ahead of the expressway toll station, a novel traffic flowcontrol method is put forward based on the environment-friendly conception. The technical thinking of inducing the slowly moving traffic into a batch pass is determined based on the conclusion of the research, traffic flowtheory and traffic sensing detection technology. The model of stop times is established and the parameters of the system are optimized in accordance with the principle of minimizing the fuel consumption. The optimal location selection of traffic control lights and Detector 2 for queue of different lengths at toll stations are calculated based on the model. Finally, the effect of the congestion flowcontrol system is verified via the Paramics simulation system. The result shows that the control system is capable of reducing90% of fuel consumption for vehicles going through toll stations.
文摘Road throughput can be increased by driving at small inter-vehicle time gaps. Although the main CACC objective is to increase road throughput, the first commercial application of CACC is foreseen to be in truck platooning, since short distance following is expected to yield significant fuel savings in this case.
