Phosphate is supplied to agriculture by mining and fertilizer production,followed by different steps of phosphate utilization,including primary production,feed and food consumption,and conversion of biomass,with accumulation in soils,but little recycling and severe environmental losses.Phosphate is a limited essential nutrient,however,with very uneven distribution worldwide.Closing the cycle and reducing primary phosphate consumption are fundamental future challenges.Maize has a relatively high phosphate requirement.China and Germany together cover the whole range of maize production systems.The new Sino-German international research training group"Adaptation of Chinese and German maize-based food-feed-energy systems to limited phosphate resources"(AMAIZE-P)was initiated in 2018 as a joint venture of the China Agricultural University(Beijing,China)and the University of Hohenheim(Stuttgart,Germany).The interdisciplinary and complementary research is driven by the hypothesis that under phosphate limited conditions,high productivity and high phosphate use efficiency can be achieved simultaneously by adapting phosphate cycling and availability(sources)to the multipurpose phosphate demands(sinks)in maizebased food-feed-energy systems.The educational program for doctoral researchers in China and Germany includes joint block seminars,thematic field trips,case studies,methodological courses,doctoral researchers’conferences,intercultural training sessions and personal training. 展开更多

This study describes the planning process of a major multi-disciplinary research project that aims to enhance effectiveness of the Higher Degree Research (HDR) training process in computing-related disciplines by applying the threshold concept theories and framework. Two specific disciplines, the computer science and information systems were chosen for the study that closely represents the two ends of a wide range of computing discipline spectrum within the faculties of science, engineering, business and education. The ultimate goal of the above major project, when completed, is to enhance productivity of research training process in computing schools. The foreshadowed problem is that for many of HDR students it takes a long time to produce a specific result expected to be done in much shorter periods of time; and yet at some stage the student seems to get over this hurdle almost overnight. By adopting a threshold concept framework this study extends existing studies in the above area by specifically targeting HDR process in computing disciplines, and provides plans for a wide range of studies that will ideally lead to identification of threshold concept for HDR students in computing disciplines. The issue under development in the current study is how can the process of overcoming the above hurdles be facilitated? How can the productivity of various resources utilized during the above long and frustrating waiting periods be increased by shortening the waiting times? 展开更多

In 2011, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine(UPSOM) and Tsinghua University formed a partnership to further the education of Tsinghua medical students. These students come to UPSOM as visiting research sch... In 2011, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine(UPSOM) and Tsinghua University formed a partnership to further the education of Tsinghua medical students. These students come to UPSOM as visiting research scholars for two years of their eight-year MD curriculum. During this time, the students, who have completed four years at Tsinghua, work full-time in medical school laboratories and research programs of their choice, essentially functioning as graduate students. In their first two months in Pittsburgh, the scholars have a one-week orientation to biomedical research, followed by two-week rotations in four labs selected on the basis of the scholars' scientific interests, after which they choose one of these labs for the remainder of the two years.Selected labs may be in basic science departments, basic science divisions of clinical departments, or specialized centers that focus on approaches like simulation and modeling. The Tsinghua students also have a brief exposure to clinical medicine. UPSOM has also formed a similar partnership with Central South University Xiangya School of Medicine in Changsha, Hunan Province. The Xiangya students come to UPSOM for two years of research training after their sixth year and, thus, unlike the Tsinghua students,have already completed their clinical rotations. UPSOM faculty members have also paved the way for UPMC(University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), UPSOM's clinical partner, to engage with clinical centers in China. Major relationships involving advisory, training, managerial, and/or equity roles exist with Xiangya International Medical Center, KingMED Diagnostics, First Chengmei Medical Industry Group, and Macare Women's Hospital. Both UPSOM and UPMC are actively exploring other clinical and academic opportunities in China. 展开更多

The production-oriented approach (POA) has been developed over a decade. It is driven by the need to improve English classroom instruction for university students in China (Wen, 2016). It is also motivated by the ... The production-oriented approach (POA) has been developed over a decade. It is driven by the need to improve English classroom instruction for university students in China (Wen, 2016). It is also motivated by the aspiration to enhance the quality of foreign language education in other similar pedagogical contexts outside China. A volume of research has been done by Wen Qiufang and her research team, to formulate the theory of POA and to test its effectiveness in classroom pedagogy (e.g. Wen, 2016, 2015; Yang, 2015; Zhang, 2015). At the moment, the POA is still at an early stage of theory building and almost all empirical research is done in the Chinese context. In order to improve the quality of this theory and to make it intelligible to the international academic community, a one-day symposium was held in Beijing Foreign Studies University on May 15, 2017. The symposium was entitled 'The first international forum on innovative foreign language education in China: Appraisal of the POA'. In the forum, leading experts in applied linguistics were invited to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the POA and the directions for its future development. The symposium was the first attempt for the POA research team to discuss its latest work with international scholars. This Viewpoint section collects the responses of four experts who participated in the symposium, listed in alphabetical order. The collection of articles covers three topics related to the POA: its pedagogical application, its use for teacher training, and its research. Alister Cumming is Professor Emeritus and the former Head of the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies, University of Toronto, Canada. His article focuses primarily on POA research as an exemplary case of design-based research. Rod Ellis is Research Professor in the School of Education at Curtin University, Australia. He discusses POA in terms of pedagogy, teacher training and research, with both critiques and constructive suggestions. Paul Kei Matsuda is Professor of English and Director of Second Language Writing at Arizona State University, the writed states. He responds to POA from the perspective of an expert researcher and teacher of L2 writing. Charlene Polio is Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian & African Languages atMichigan State University, the writed states. She conceptualises POA as a useful method to address some issues in pre-service teacher development. Overall, the articles in this section are insightful and reader-friendly. They are not only useful for the development of POA in particular, but may also be valuable to a broad range of researchers as they touch upon pertaining issues, as well as emerging topics, in the field of applied linguistics.
