Horizontal well drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing are key technologies for the development of shale gas reservoirs.Instantaneous acquisition of hydraulic fracture parameters is crucial for evaluating fracturing effectiveness, optimizing processes, and predicting gas productivity. This paper establishes a transient flow model for shale gas wells based on the boundary element method, achieving the characterization of stimulated reservoir volume for a single stage.By integrating pressure monitoring data following the pumping shut-in period of hydraulic fracturing for well testing interpretation,a workflow for inverting fracture parameters of shale gas wells is established. This new method eliminates the need for prolonged production testing and can interpret parameters of individual hydraulic fracture segments, offering significant advantages over the conventional pressure transient analysismethod. The practical application of thismethodology was conducted on 10 shale gaswellswithin the Changning shale gas block of Sichuan,China. The results show a high correlation between the interpreted single-stage total length and surface area of hydraulic fractures and the outcomes of gas production profile tests.Additionally, significant correlations are observed between these parameters and cluster number, horizontal stress difference, and natural fracture density. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed fracture parameter inversion method and the feasibility of field application. The findings of this study aim to provide solutions and references for the inversion of fracture parameters in shale gas wells. 展开更多

Horizontal wells in the anisotropic reservoirs can be stimulated by hydraulic fracturing in order to create multiple finite-conductivity vertical fractures. Several methods for evaluating the productivity of the horizontal wells have been presented in the literature. With such methods, however, it is still difficult to obtain an accurate result. This paper firstly presents the dimensionless conductivity theory of vertical fractures. Then models for calculating the equivalent wellbore radius and the skin factor due to flow convergence to the well bore are proposed after analyzing the steady-state flow in porous reservoirs. By applying the superposition principle to the pressure drop, a new method for evaluating the productivity of horizontal wells intercepted by multiple finite-conductivity fractures is developed. The influence of fracture conductivity and fracture half length on the horizontal well productivity is quantitatively analyzed with a synthetic case. Optimum fracture number and fracture space are further discussed in this study. The results prove that the method outlined here should be useful to design optimum fracturing of horizontal wells. 展开更多

Severe well interference through complex fracture networks(CFNs)can be observed among multi-well pads in low permeability reservoirs. The well interference analysis between multi-fractured horizontal wells(MFHWs)is vitally important for reservoir effective development.Well interference has been historically investigated by pressure transient analysis, while it has shown that rate transient analysis has great potential in well interference diagnosis. However, the impact of complex fracture networks(CFNs)on rate transient behavior of parent well and child well in unconventional reservoirs is still not clear. To further investigate, this paper develops an integrated approach combining pressure and rate transient analysis for well interference diagnosis considering CFNs.To perform multi-well simulation considering CFNs,non-intrusive embedded discrete fracture model approach was applied for coupling fracture with reservoir models. The impact of CFN including natural fractures and frac-hits on pressure and rate transient behavior in multi-well system was investigated. On a logelog plot, interference flow and compound linear flow are two new flow regimes caused by nearby producers. When both NFs and frac-hits are present in the reservoir,frac-hits have a greater impact on well#1 which contains frac-hits,and NFs have greater impact on well#3 which does not have frac-hits.For all well producing circumstances,it might be challenging to see divergence during pseudosteady state flow brought on by frac-hits on the logelog plot.Besides, when NFs occur, reservoir depletion becomes noticeable in comparison to frac-hits in pressure distribution.Application of this integrated approach demonstrates that it works well to characterize the well interference among different multi-fractured horizontal wells in a well pad.Better reservoir evaluation can be acquired based on the new features observed in the novel model, demonstrating the practicability of the proposed approach. The findings of this study can help for better evaluating well interference degree in multi-well systems combing PTA and RTA,which can reduce the uncertainty and improve the accuracy of the well interference analysis based on both field pressure and rate data. 展开更多

A review of the pressure transient analysis of flow in reservoirs having natural fractures, vugs and/or caves is presented to provide an insight into how much knowledge has been acquired about this phenomenon and to highlight the gaps still open for further research.A comparison-based approach is adopted which involved the review of works by several authors and identifying the limiting assumptions, model restrictions and applicability.Pressure transient analysis provides information to aid the identification of important features of reservoirs. It also provides an explanation to complex reservoir pressuredependent variations which have led to improved understanding and optimization of the reservoir dynamics.Pressure transient analysis techniques, however, have limitations as not all its models find application in naturally fractured and vuggy reservoirs as the flow dynamics differ considerably.Pollard’s model presented in 1953 provided the foundation for existing pressure transient analysis in these types of reservoirs, and since then, several authors have modified this basic model and come up with more accurate models to characterize the dynamic pressure behavior in reservoirs with natural fractures, vugs and/or caves, with most having inherent limitations. This paper summarizes what has been done, what knowledge is considered established and the gaps left to be researched on. 展开更多

The oil-water two-phase flow pressure-transient analysis model for polymer flooding fractured well is established by considering the comprehensive effects of polymer shear thinning, shear thickening, convection, diffusion, adsorption retention, inaccessible pore volume and effective permeability reduction. The finite volume difference and Newton iteration methods are applied to solve the model, and the effects of fracture conductivity coefficient, injected polymer mass concentration, initial polymer mass concentration and water saturation on the well-test type curves of polymer flooding fractured wells are discussed. The results show that with the increase of fracture conductivity coefficient, the pressure conduction becomes faster and the pressure drop becomes smaller,so the pressure curve of transitional flow goes downward, the duration of bilinear flow becomes shorter, and the linear flow appears earlier and lasts longer. As the injected polymer mass concentration increases, the effective water phase viscosity increases, and the pressure loss increases,so the pressure and pressure derivative curves go upward, and the bilinear flow segment becomes shorter. As the initial polymer mass concentration increases, the effective water phase viscosity increases,so the pressure curve after the wellbore storage segment moves upward as a whole. As the water saturation increases, the relative permeability of water increases, the relative permeability of oil decreases, the total oil-water two-phase mobility becomes larger, and the pressure loss is reduced,so the pressure curve after the wellbore storage segment moves downward as a whole. The reliability and practicability of this new model are verified by the comparison of the results from simplified model and commercial well test software, and the actual well test data. 展开更多

Aquifer test methods have greatly improved in recent years with the advent of inverse analysis, derivative analysis, and diagnostic plots. Updated analyses of past aquifer tests allow for improved interpretations of the data to enhance the knowledge and the predictive capabilities of the flow system. This work thoroughly reanalyzes a series of pre- and post-hydraulic fracturing, single-well aquifer tests conducted in two crystalline rock wells in New Hampshire as part of an early 1970’s study. Previous analyses of the data had relied on older manual type-curve methods for predicting the possible effects of hydraulic fracturing. This work applies inverse analysis, derivative analysis, and diagnostic plots to reanalyze the 1970’s aquifer test data. Our results demonstrate that the aquifer tests were affected by changes in flow regimes, dewatering of the aquifer and discrete fractures, and changes due to well development. Increases in transmissivities are related to well development prior to hydraulic fracturing, propagation of a single, vertical fracture hydraulically connecting the two wells after stimulation and expansion of troughs of depression. After hydraulic fracturing, the estimated total yield of the individual wells increased by 2.5 times due to the hydraulic fracturing. However, the wells may be receiving water from the same source, and well interference may affect any significant increase in their combined yield. Our analyses demonstrate the value in applying inverse analysis, derivative analysis, and diagnostic plots over the conventional method of manual type-curve analysis. In addition, our improvement in the aquifer test interpretation of the 1970’s test data has implications for more reliable estimates of sustained well yields. 展开更多

Brazilian disc tests were undertaken on a number of red sandstone samples with different water absorption ratios. The tensile strength of the red sandstone decreases as the water absorption ratio increases. The fracture surfaces of failed red sandstone discs were scanned by Talysurf CLI 2000.With the aid of Talymap Gold software, based on ISO25178,a set of statistical parameters was obtained for the fracture surfaces. The maximum peak height(S_p),maximum pit height(S_v) and maximum height(S_z) of the fracture surfaces exhibited the same decreasing trend with increasing water absorption.Sa and Sku values for the fracture surfaces showed a downward trend as the water absorption ratio increased. The fractal dimensions of fracture surfaces were calculated and found to decrease as the water absorption ratio increased.Through analysis of PSD curves, the smallest dominant wavelength was observed to reflect the roughness of the fracture surfaces.Additionally, the results suggest that the roughness of fracture surfaces becomes small as the water absorption ratio increases. 展开更多

In order to overcome the defects that the analysis of multi-well typical curves of shale gas reservoirs is rarely applied to engineering, this study proposes a robust production data analysis method based on deconvolution, which is used for multi-well inter-well interference research. In this study,a multi-well conceptual trilinear seepage model for multi-stage fractured horizontal wells was established, and its Laplace solutions under two different outer boundary conditions were obtained. Then,an improved pressure deconvolution algorithm was used to normalize the scattered production data.Furthermore, the typical curve fitting was carried out using the production data and the seepage model solution. Finally, some reservoir parameters and fracturing parameters were interpreted, and the intensity of inter-well interference was compared. The effectiveness of the method was verified by analyzing the production dynamic data of six shale gas wells in Duvernay area. The results showed that the fitting effect of typical curves was greatly improved due to the mutual restriction between deconvolution calculation parameter debugging and seepage model parameter debugging.Besides,by using the morphological characteristics of the log-log typical curves and the time corresponding to the intersection point of the log-log typical curves of two models under different outer boundary conditions, the strength of the interference between wells on the same well platform was well judged. This work can provide a reference for the optimization of well spacing and hydraulic fracturing measures for shale gas wells. 展开更多

Understanding microcracking near coalesced fracture generation is critically important for hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoir characterization as well as damage evaluation in civil engineering structures. Dense and sometimes random microcracking near coalesced fracture formation alters the mechanical properties of the nearby virgin material. Individual microcrack characterization is also significant in quantifying the material changes near the fracture faces (i.e. damage). Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring and analysis provide unique information regarding the microcracking process temporally, and infor- mation concerning the source characterization of individual microcracks can be extracted. In this context, laboratory hydraulic fracture tests were carried out while monitoring the AEs from several piezoelectric transducers. In-depth post-processing of the AE event data was performed for the purpose of under- standing the individual source mechanisms. Several source characterization techniques including moment tensor inversion, event parametric analysis, and volumetric deformation analysis were adopted. Post-test fracture characterization through coring, slicing and micro-computed tomographic imaging was performed to determine the coalesced fracture location and structure. Distinct differences in fracture characteristics were found spatially in relation to the openhole injection interval. Individual microcrack AE analysis showed substantial energy reduction emanating spatially from the injection interval. It was quantitatively observed that the recorded AE signals provided sufficient information to generalize the damage radiating spatially away from the injection wellbore. 展开更多

This paper presents the development and application of a production data analysis software that can analyze and forecast the production performance and reservoir properties of shale gas wells. The theories used in the study were based on the analytical and empirical approaches. Its reliability has been confirmed through comparisons with a commercial software.Using transient data relating to multi-stage hydraulic fractured horizontal wells,it was confirmed that the accuracy of the modified hyperbolic method showed an error of approximately 4%compared to the actual estimated ultimate recovery(EUR).On the basis of the developed model, reliable productivity forecasts have been obtained by analyzing field production data relating to wells in Canada. The EUR was computed as 9.6 Bcf using the modified hyperbolic method.Employing the Pow Law Exponential method, the EUR would be 9.4 Bcf.The models developed in this study will allow in the future integration of new analytical and empirical theories in a relatively readily than commercial models. 展开更多

Polymer flooding in fractured wells has been extensively applied in oilfields to enhance oil recovery. In contrast to water, polymer solution exhibits non-Newtonian and nonlinear behavior such as effects of shear thinning and shear thickening, polymer convection, diffusion, adsorption retention, inaccessible pore volume and reduced effective permeability.Meanwhile, the flux density and fracture conductivity along the hydraulic fracture are generally non-uniform due to the effects of pressure distribution, formation damage, and proppant breakage. In this paper,we present an oil-water two-phase flow model that captures these complex non-Newtonian and nonlinear behavior, and non-uniform fracture characteristics in fractured polymer flooding. The hydraulic fracture is firstly divided into two parts:high-conductivity fracture near the wellbore and low-conductivity fracture in the far-wellbore section.A hybrid grid system, including perpendicular bisection(PEBI)and Cartesian grid,is applied to discrete the partial differential flow equations, and the local grid refinement method is applied in the near-wellbore region to accurately calculate the pressure distribution and shear rate of polymer solution. The combination of polymer behavior characterizations and numerical flow simulations are applied, resulting in the calculation for the distribution of water saturation, polymer concentration and reservoir pressure.Compared with the polymer flooding well with uniform fracture conductivity, this non-uniform fracture conductivity model exhibits the larger pressure difference, and the shorter bilinear flow period due to the decrease of fracture flow ability in the far-wellbore section. The field case of the fall-off test demonstrates that the proposed method characterizes fracture characteristics more accurately, and yields fracture half-lengths that better match engineering reality, enabling a quantitative segmented characterization of the near-wellbore section with high fracture conductivity and the far-wellbore section with low fracture conductivity. The novelty of this paper is the analysis of pressure performances caused by the fracture dynamics and polymer rheology,as well as an analysis method that derives formation and fracture parameters based on the pressure and its derivative curves. 展开更多

The treatment of horizontal wells with massive hydraulic fracturing technology is important for the economical development of shale gas reservoirs, but sometimes is complex because of the induced fractures during the fracturing process. The studies of the fluid flow characteristics in such formations are rare. In this study, a numerical method based on a finite element method (FEM) is developed for the productivity analysis of a horizontal well in a shale gas reservoir with complex fractures. The proposed method takes into account the adsorbed gas and the complex hydraulic fracture branches. To make the problem more tractable, the dimension of the fracture system is reduced from 2-D to 1-D based on the discrete fracture network (DFN) model. The accuracy of the new method is verified by comparing its results with those obtained by the Saphir commercial software. Finally, the productivity of the fractured horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs with complex fractures systems is evaluated and analyzed. Results show that if a well is produced with a constant bottomhole pressure, the well productivity is much increased due to the existence of fracture branches that can increase the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). In addition, the number of hydraulic fractures (Nf) and the fracture halMengths (Lf) have an important influence on the well's productivity. The larger the values of Nf,Lf,the greater the well productivity will be. The existence of adsorbed gas can markedly improve the well productivity, and the greater the Langmuir volume, the greater the productivity will be. The conclusions drawn by this study can provide a guidance for the development of unconventional shale gas reservoirs. 展开更多

On the backdrop of dwindling conventional reserves, unconventional reservoirs have emerged as a pivotal chapter in resource extraction.Despite their challenges, such as low permeability, complex fluid storage, and flow mechanisms, hydraulic fracturing technology has underpinned the development of unconventional reservoirs.Consequently, this has brought about a shift in the sequence of flow regimes,e.g.,the transient radial flow regime has been largely shortened by the lengthy transient linear flow regime due to the low permeability of unconventional reservoirs.Moreover,straight-line analysis(SLA),the simplest technique in rate transient analysis(RTA),is a fundamental and potent tool for swiftly extracting reservoir and hydraulic fracture information, estimating oil and gas reserves, and furnishing crucial initial data for subsequent historical matching processes. However, there is currently a dearth of review papers pertaining to a necessary guide of applying SLA in various transient linear flow(TLF)regimes and different unconventional reservoirs.Hence, this paper commences by elucidating the classification of TLF regimes, commonly used methods for recognizing flow regimes, and the diverse SLA methods used for different TLF regimes.Subsequently,it delves into a discussion of different modification techniques for variable rate/flowing pressure, gas phase, complex reservoir characteristics in unconventional reservoirs, and dynamic drainage area concepts etc.Furthermore, the application of SLA in specific domains, namely core analysis and the flowback period,is described. It culminates by surveying the advancements through an integration of novel technologies to enhance estimation accuracy. The paper also highlights certain drawbacks of current SLA technology and proposes new research directions.Ultimately, this paper would serve as an indispensable resource, offering foundational knowledge for the application of SLA in TLF to promote the production of global unconventional resources in a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable fashion in the face of a climate-resilient world. 展开更多

Transient rate decline curve analysis for constant pressure production is presented in this pa- per for a naturally fractured reservoir. This approach is based on exponential and constant bottom-hole pressure solution. Based on this method, when In (flow rate) is plotted versus time, two straight lines are ob- tained which can be used for estimating different parameters of a naturally fractured reservoir. Parameters such as storage capacity ratio (co), reservoir drainage area (A), reservoir shape factor (CA), fracture per- meability (ky), interporosity flow parameter (,~) and the other parameters can be determined by this ap- proach. The equations are based on a model originally presented by Warren and Root and extended by Da Prat et al. and Mavor and Cinco-Ley. The proposed method has been developed to be used for naturally fractured reservoirs with different geometries. This method does not involve the use of any chart and by us- ing the pseudo steady state flow regime, the influence of wellbore storage on the value of the parameters ob- tained from this technique is negligible. In this technique, all the parameters can be obtained directly while in conventional approaches like type curve matching method, parameters such as co and g should be ob- tained by other methods like build-up test analysis and this is one of the most important advantages of this method that could save time during reservoir analyses. Different simulated and field examples were used for testing the proposed technique. Comparison between the obtained results by this approach and the results of type curve matching method shows a high performance of decline curves in well testing. 展开更多

The application of distributed temperature sensors(DTS)to monitor producing zones of horizontal well through a real-time measurement of a temperature profile is becoming increasingly popular. Those parameters, such as flow rate along wellbore, well completion method, skin factor, are potentially related to the information from DTS.Based on mass-,momentum-,and energy-balance equations, this paper established a coupled model to study on temperature distribution along wellbore of fracturing horizontal wells by considering skin factor in order to predict wellbore temperature distribution and analyze the factors influencing the wellbore temperature profile. The models presented in this paper account for heat convective, fluid expansion, heat conduction, and viscous dissipative heating.Arriving temperature and wellbore temperature curves are plotted by computer iterative calculation. The non-perforated and perforated sections show different temperature distribution along wellbore.Through the study on the sensitivity analysis of skin factor and flow rate,we come to the conclusion that the higher skin factor generates larger temperature increase near the wellbore, besides, temperature along wellbore is related to both skin factors and flow rate.Temperature response type curves show that the larger skin factor we set,the less temperature augmenter from toe to heel could be.In addition, larger flow rate may generate higher wellbore temperature. 展开更多

Pressure buildup testing can be used to analyze fracture network characteristics and conduct quantitative interpretation of relevant parameters for shale gas wells, thus providing bases for assessing the well productivity and formulating proper development strategies. This study establishes a new well test interpretation model for fractured horizontal wells based on seepage mechanisms of shale reservoirs and proposes a method for identifying fracturing patterns based on the characteristic slopes of pressure buildup curves and curve combination patterns. The pressure buildup curve patterns are identified to represent three types of shale reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin, namely the moderately deep shale reservoirs with high pressure, deep shale reservoirs with ultra-high pressure, and moderately deep shale reservoirs with normal pressure.Based on this, the relationship between the typical pressure buildup curve patterns and the fracture network types are put forward.Fracturing effects of three types of shale gas reservoir are compared and analyzed. The results show that typical flow patterns of shale reservoirs include bilinear flow in primary and secondary fractures, linear flow in secondary fractures, bilinear flow in secondary fractures and matrix, and linear flow in matrix. The fracture network characteristics can be determined using the characteristic slopes of pressure buildup curves and curve combinations. The linear flow in early secondary fractures is increasingly distinct with an increase in primary fracture conductivity. Moreover, the bilinear flow in secondary fractures and matrix and the subsequent linear flow in the matrix occur as the propping and density of secondary fractures increase. The increase in the burial depth,in-situ stress, and stress difference corresponds to a decrease in the propping of primary fractures that expand along different directions in the shale gas wells in the Sichuan Basin.Four pressure buildup curve patterns exist in the Sichuan Basin and its periphery. The pattern of pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the Yongchuan area can be described as 1/2/→1/4,indicating limited stimulated reservoir volume, poorly propped secondary fractures, and the forming of primary fractures that extend only to certain directions. The pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the main block of the Fuling area show a pattern of 1/4/→1/2 or 1/2,indicating greater stimulated reservoir volume, well propped secondary fractures, and the forming of complex fracture networks. The pattern of pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the Pingqiao area is 1/2/→1/4→/1/2,indicating a fracturing effect somewhere between that of the Fuling and Yongchuan areas. For reservoirs with normal pressure,it is difficult to determine fracture network characteristics from pressure buildup curves due to insufficient formation energy and limited liquid drainage. 展开更多

A new gas hydrate reservoir stimulation method of in-situ fracturing with transient heating is proposed, in line with analysis of the technological bottlenecks faced by marine gas hydrate production. This method injects the developed chemical reagents into a hydrate reservoir through hydraulic fracturing, releasing heat during the chemical reaction to increase the hydrate decomposition rate. The chemical reaction product furthermore has a honeycomb structure to support fractures and increase reservoir permeability. Based on the geological model of natural gas hydrate in the South China Sea, three development methods are simulated to evaluate hydrate production capacity, consisting of horizontal well, fractured horizontal well and in-situ fracturing with transient heating well. Compared with the horizontal well, the simulation results show that the cumulative gas production of the fractured horizontal well in one year is 7 times that of the horizontal well, while the cumulative gas production of in-situ fracturing with transient heating well is 12 times that of the horizontal well, which significantly improves daily efficiency and cumulative gas production. In addition, the variation patterns of hydrate saturation and temperature-pressure fields with production time for the three exploitation plans are presented, it being found that three sensitive parameters of fracture conductivity, fracture half-length and fracture number are positively correlated with hydrate production enhancement. Through the simulations, basic data and theoretical support for the optimization of gas hydrate reservoir stimulation scheme has been provided. 展开更多

The finite element method based on the equivalent domain integral technique was developed to simulate the push out test and evaluate the interfacial fracture toughness of SiC reinforced titanium matrix composites. A special subroutine was introduced while modeling the push-out test to control interfacial failure process. In addition, the residual stresses, Poisson ratio and friction stresses were all considered in the finite element analysis and the interface debonding was described as a continuous process. The results show that the interfacial fracture toughness of SiC/Timetal-834 is about 50 J/m2. Moreover, the effects of various parameters on the interfacial fracture toughness and the variations of energy release rates at both ends of the specimen were analyzed in detail. 展开更多
