To investigate the mechanical behavior of segmental lining,a three-dimensional numerical analysis and test using three actual segments were used to analyze the effects of axial force and reinforcement ratio on the failure mechanism and ultimate bearing capacity of segmental lining. Both numerical and test results confirmed that the cracking load, yield and ultimate load were strongly influenced by axial force, and it was also proved that the yield and ultimate load would increase with the increase of reinforcement ratio, but the cracking load was almost not affected. The cracking load, yield and ultimate load are about 28.7%,500% and 460% larger due to the effect of axial force respectively. The comparison between numerical calculation and test results showed that the finite element analysis results were in good agreement with the test results. 展开更多

The mass and heat transfer mechanisms during radio frequency/vacuum (RF/V) drying of square-edged timber were analyzed and discussed in detail, and a new one-dimensional mathematical model to describe the transport phenomena of mass and heat during continuous RF/V drying was derived from conservation equations based on the mass and heat transfer theory of porous materials The new model provided a relatively fast and efficient way to simulate vacuum drying behavior assisted by dielectric heating. Its advantages compared with the conventional models include: (1) Each independent vari- able has a separate control equation and is solved inde- pendently by converting the partial differential equation into a difference equation with the finite volume method; (2) The calculated data from different parts of the specimen can be displayed in the evolution curves, and the change law of the, parameters can be better described. After analyzing the calculated results, most of the important phenomena observed during RF/V drying were adequately described by this model. 展开更多

This study focuses on the urgent requirement for improved accuracy in diseasemodeling by introducing a newcomputational framework called the Hybrid SIR-Fuzzy Model.By integrating the traditional Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered(SIR)modelwith fuzzy logic, ourmethod effectively addresses the complex nature of epidemic dynamics by accurately accounting for uncertainties and imprecisions in both data and model parameters. The main aim of this research is to provide a model for disease transmission using fuzzy theory, which can successfully address uncertainty in mathematical modeling. Our main emphasis is on the imprecise transmission rate parameter, utilizing a three-part description of its membership level. This enhances the representation of disease processes with greater complexity and tackles the difficulties related to quantifying uncertainty in mathematical models. We investigate equilibrium points for three separate scenarios and perform a comprehensive sensitivity analysis, providing insight into the complex correlation betweenmodel parameters and epidemic results. In order to facilitate a quantitative analysis of the fuzzy model,we propose the implementation of a resilient numerical scheme. The convergence study of the scheme demonstrates its trustworthiness, providing a conditionally positive solution, which represents a significant improvement compared to current forward Euler schemes. The numerical findings demonstrate themodel’s effectiveness in accurately representing the dynamics of disease transmission.Significantly, when the mortality coefficient rises, both the susceptible and infected populations decrease, highlighting the model’s sensitivity to important epidemiological factors. Moreover, there is a direct relationship between higher Holling type rate values and a decrease in the number of individuals who are infected,as well as an increase in the number of susceptible individuals. This correlation offers a significant understanding of how many elements affect the consequences of an epidemic. Our objective is to enhance decision-making in public health by providing a thorough quantitative analysis of the Hybrid SIR-Fuzzy Model. Our approach not only tackles the existing constraints in disease modeling, but also paves the way for additional investigation, providing a vital instrument for researchers and policymakers alike. 展开更多

The human immunodeficiency viruses are two species of Lentivirus that infect humans.Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,a condition in which progressive immune system failure allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.Human immunodeficiency virus infection came from a type of chimpanzee in Central Africa.Studies show that immunodeficiency viruses may have jumped from chimpanzees to humans as far back as the late 1800s.Over decades, human immunodeficiency viruses slowly spread across Africa and later into other parts of the world. The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered(SIR)models are significant in studying disease dynamics. In this paper,we have studied the effect of irresponsible immigrants on HIV/AIDS dynamics by formulating and considering different methods.Euler,Runge Kutta, and a Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method are developed for the same problem.Numerical experiments are performed at disease-free and endemic equilibria points at different time step sizes‘ℎ’.The results reveal that, unlike Euler and Runge Kutta, which fail for large time step sizes, the proposed Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method gives a convergence solution for any time step size. Our proposed numerical method is bounded, dynamically con-sistent,and preserves the positivity of the continuous solution, which are essential requirements when modeling a prevalent disease. 展开更多

In this work,we developed a simple and direct circuit model with a dual two-diode model that can be solved by a SPICE numerical simulation to comprehensively describe the monolithic perovskite/crystalline silicon(PVS/c-Si)tandem solar cells. We are able to reveal the effects of different efficiency-loss mechanisms based on the illuminated current density-voltage(J-V),semi-log dark J-V,and local ideality factor(m-V)curves.The effects of the individual efficiency-loss mechanism on the tandem cell’s efficiency are discussed, including the exp(V/VT)and exp(V/2VT)recombination,the whole cell’s and subcell’s shunts, and the Ohmic-contact or Schottky-contact of the intermediate junction. We can also fit a practical J-V curve and find a specific group of parameters by the trial-and-error method.Although the fitted parameters are not a unique solution, they are valuable clues for identifying the efficiency loss with the aid of the cell’s structure and experimental processes. This method can also serve as an open platform for analyzing other tandem solar cells by substituting the corresponding circuit models. In summary,we developed a simple and effective methodology to diagnose the efficiency-loss source of a monolithic PVS/c-Si tandem cell, which is helpful to researchers who wish to adopt the proper approaches to improve their solar cells. 展开更多

Recently, the world is facing the terror of the novel corona-virus,termed as COVID-19.Various health institutes and researchers are continuously striving to control this pandemic. In this article, the SEIAR(susceptible, exposed, infected, symptomatically infected, asymptomatically infected and recovered)infection model of COVID-19 with a constant rate of advection is studied for the disease propagation.A simple model of the disease is extended to an advection model by accommodating the advection process and some appropriate parameters in the system. The continuous model is transposed into a discrete numerical model by discretizing the domains, finitely. To analyze the disease dynamics,a structure preserving non-standard finite difference scheme is designed. Two steady states of the continuous system are described i.e.,virus free steady state and virus existing steady state.Graphical results show that both the steady states of the numerical design coincide with the fixed points of the continuous SEIAR model.Positivity of the state variables is ensured by applying the M-matrix theory.A result for the positivity property is established. For the proposed numerical design, two different types of the stability are investigated.Nonlinear stability and linear stability for the projected scheme is examined by applying some standard results.Von Neuman stability test is applied to ensure linear stability. The reproductive number is described and its pivotal role in stability analysis is also discussed.Consistency and convergence of the numerical model is also studied.Numerical graphs are presented via computer simulations to prove the worth and efficiency of the quarantine factor is explored graphically, which is helpful in controlling the disease dynamics. In the end,the conclusion of the study is also rendered. 展开更多

Japan has yet to establish a seismic design for road box culverts(RBCs)because past major earthquakes did not damage them.In recent years, structures with enlarged sectional dimensions(the purpose of which is to optimize the internal space in RBCs)have become common. However, the unknown seismic strength of such large RBCs makes RBC seismic designs increasingly necessary.Several seismic design methods have been developed for and applied to rectangular underground structures,e.g.,cut-and-cover tunnels, which are structurally similar to RBCs.Although these methods are applicable to RBCs,it is uncertain whether they can be applied directly because there are currently no evaluation results from model tests on RBCs,which have unique structural features,e.g.,no haunch at the bottom of the sidewalls. Therefore,we verify a seismic behavior of an RBC and develop a method for evaluating it in order to establish a seismic design for RBCs.We conducted centrifuge model tests subjected to seismic force and a numerical analysis using an elastoplastic finite analysis method,in addition,we validated this analysis by comparing the test and analytical results. The test results show RBCs will most likely develop rocking rotation when the ground strain exceeds approximately 0.08%.A comparison of the numerical and experimental results shows that this analysis can estimate the shear deformation behavior with approximately 90%accuracy in square cross-section cases.Meanwhile, this analysis has tendency to underestimate the axial forces in each case and to overestimate the bending moments of some members in the case of wide cross-sections. 展开更多

Firstly, sample square-circular transition tube along straight central route was modeled on CATIA software. The parameters are as follows: let the tube length is L, and the constant cross section area is S, and S = πR^2 = a2, in which R stands for the circle radius on one end, and a the square side length on the other end; set up the coordinate system with OX axis on the central route in which the origin O is on centroid of the square end and assume the cross section size at x as the square shaped with all four comers filleted in radius r which is proportional to x, that is, the linear slope of r is R/L, thus, both values r and square side length ax can be attained on the constant cross section area assumption. Secondly, some sample polygonal-circular transition tubes along straight, circular and helical central route were implemented similarly. Thirdly, numerical analysis of stress and displacement of these tubes were carried out on MSC/PATRAN software which are important to the distribution of turbulent flow and the layout of these transitional tube structures. 展开更多

In order to optimize the embedded system implementation for Ethernet-based computer numerical control (CNC) system,it is very necessary to establish the performance analysis model and further adopt the codesign method from the control, communication and computing perspectives. On the basis of analyzing real-time Ethernet, system architecture, time characteristic parameters of control-loop etc,a performance analysis model for real-time Ethernet-based CNC system was proposed, which is able to include the timing effects caused by the implementation platform in the simulation. The key for establishing the model is accomplished by designing the error analysis module and the controller nodes.Under the restraint of CPU resource and communication bandwidth, the experiment with a case study was conducted, and the results show that if the deadline miss ratio of data packets is 0.2%,then the percentage error is 1.105%.The proposed model can be used at several stages of CNC system development. 展开更多

Geomechanical data are never sufficient in quantity or adequately precise and accurate for design purposes in mining and civil engineering. The objective of this paper is to show the variability of rock properties at the sampled point in the roadway's roof, and then, how the statistical processing of the available geomechanical data can affect the results of numerical modelling of the roadway's stability.Four cases were applied in the numerical analysis, using average values(the most common in geomechanical data analysis),average minus standard deviation, median, and average value minus statistical error. The study show that different approach to the same geomechanical data set can change the modelling results considerably. The case shows that average minus standard deviation is the most conservative and least risky. It gives the displacements and yielded elements zone in four times broader range comparing to the average values scenario, which is the least conservative option. The two other cases need to be studied further. The results obtained from them are placed between most favorable and most adverse values.Taking the average values corrected by statistical error for the numerical analysis seems to be the best solution. Moreover, the confidence level can be adjusted depending on the object importance and the assumed risk level. 展开更多

The current vs. voltage (I-V) characteristic based on the Lambert W-function was used. The estimation parameters for the simulation approach of the photovoltaic (PV) module make use of Levenberg-Marquardt method. It was considered an industrial polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) module and the simulated results were compared with the experimental ones extracted from a specific datasheet. The I-V characteristic for the analysed PV module and its maximum output power are investigated for different operating conditions of incident solar radiation flux and temperature, as well as parameters related to the solar cells material and technology (series resistance, shunt resistance and gamma factor). The analysis gives indications and limitations for design and optimization of the performance for industrial PV modules. This study can be implemented in any type of PV module. 展开更多

The force production physics and the flow control mechanism of fish fast C-start are studied numerically and theoretically by using a tail-flapping model. The problem is simplified to a 2-D foil that rotates rapidly to and fro on one side about its fixed leading edge in water medium. The study involves the simulation of the flow by solving the two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier- Stokes equations and employing a theoretical analytic modeling approach.Firstly, reasonable thrust magnitude and its time history are obtained and checked by fitting predicted results coming from these two approaches.Next, the flow fields and vortex structures are given, and the propulsive mechanism is interpreted. The results show that the induction of vortex distributions near the trailing edge of the tail are important in the time-averaged thrust generation, though the added inertial effect plays an important role in producing an instant large thrust especially in the first stage.Furthermore, dynamic and energetic effects of some kinematic controlling factors are discussed. For enhancing the time- averaged thrust but keeping a favorable ratio of it to time-averaged input power within the limitations of muscle ability,it is recommended to have a larger deflection amplitude in a limited time interval and with no time delay between the to-and-fro strokes. 展开更多

Based on model tests of earthen dam breach due to piping failure, a numerical model was developed.A key difference from previous research is the assumption that the cross-section of the pipe channel is an arch, with a rectangle at the bottom and a semicircle at the top before the collapse of the pipe roof, rather than a rectangular or circular cross-section.A shear stress-based erosion rate formula was utilized, and the arched pipe tunnel was assumed to enlarge along its length and width until the overlying soil could no longer maintain stability.Orifice flow and open channel flow were adopted to calculate the breach flow discharge for pressure and free surface flows, respectively. The collapse of the pipe roof was determined by comparing the weight of the overlying soil and the cohesion of the soil on the two sidewalls of the pipe. After the collapse, overtopping failure dominated, and the limit equilibrium method was adopted to estimate the stability of the breach slope when the water flow overtopped. In addition, incomplete and base erosion, as well as one-and two-sided breaches were taken into account. The USDAARS-HERU model test P1, with detailed measured data, was used as a case study, and two artificially filled earthen dam failure cases were studied to verify the model.Feedback analysis demonstrates that the proposed model can provide satisfactory results for modeling the breach flow discharge and breach development process.Sensitivity analysis shows that the soil erodibility and initial piping position significantly affect the prediction of the breach flow discharge.Furthermore, a comparison with a well-known numerical model shows that the proposed model performs better than the NWS BREACH model. 展开更多

Estimation of the rock mass modulus of deformation(Em)is one of the most important design parameters in designing many structures in and on rock. This parameter can be obtained by in situ tests, empirical relations between deformation modulus and rock mass classifcation, and estimating from laboratory tests results. In this paper,a back analysis calculation is performed to present an equation for estimation of the rock mass modulus of deformation using genetic programming(GP)and numerical modeling.A database of 40,960 datasets, including vertical stress(rz),horizontal to vertical stresses ratio(k),Poisson’s ratio(m),radius of circular tunnel(r)and wall displacement of circular tunnel on the horizontal diameter(d)for input parameters and modulus of deformation for output, was established. The selected parameters are easy to determine and rock mass modulus of deformation can be obtained from instrumentation data of any size circular galleries. The resulting RMSE of 0.86 and correlation coeffcient of97%of the proposed equation demonstrated the capability of the computer program(CP)generated by GP. 展开更多

Two modifications for the basic Barcelona model(BBM) are present. One is the replacement of the net stress by the average skeleton stress in unsaturated soil modeling, and the other is the adoption of an expression for the load-collapse(LC) yield surface that can match flexibly the normal compression lines at different suctions. The predictions of the modified BBM for the controlled-suction triaxial test on the unsaturated compacted clay are presented and compared with the experimental results. A good agreement between the predicted and experimental results demonstrates the reasonability of the modified BBM. On this basis, the coupled processes of groundwater flow and soil deformation in a homogeneous soil slope under a long heavy rainfall are simulated with the proposed elasto-plastic model. The numerical results reveal that the failure of a slope under rainfall infiltration is due to both the reduction of soil suction and the significant rise in groundwater table. The evolution of the displacements is greatly related to the change of suction. The maximum collapse deformation happens near the surface of slope where infiltrated rainwater can quickly reach. The results may provide a helpful reference for hazard assessment and control of rainfall-induced landslides. 展开更多

Nonlinear stochastic modeling plays a significant role in disciplines such as psychology, finance, physical sciences, engineering, econometrics, and biological sciences.Dynamical consistency, positivity, and boundedness are fundamental properties of stochastic modeling.A stochastic coronavirus model is studied with techniques of transition probabilities and parametric perturbation.Well-known explicit methods such as Euler Maruyama, stochastic Euler, and stochastic Runge–Kutta are investigated for the stochastic model.Regrettably, the above essential properties are not restored by existing methods.Hence, there is a need to construct essential properties preserving the computational method. The non-standard approach of finite difference is examined to maintain the above basic features of the stochastic model. The comparison of the results of deterministic and stochastic models is also presented. Our proposed efficient computational method well preserves the essential properties of the model.Comparison and convergence analyses of the method are presented. 展开更多
