The Study on the Differences of Sense of Words between English and Chinese in Translation

Translation is not only the process of transforming langue form, but also the process of interacting one thinking means and concept with another. Moreover, so as to ensure accuracy of translation, one needs to comprehend the sense of words in the source language correctly, and take appropriate approach to resolve the differences between Chinese and English through analyzing the causes. Therefore, this paper will study the differences of sense of words between English and Chinese in translation.

On the Translation of Chinese Four-character Idioms Loaded with Color Words

Chinese four-character idioms loaded with color words are the typical symbol of the Chinese culture and their transition is important to Chinese-English dictionaries.The quality of the dictionary and users' understanding are affected by the correctness and appropriateness of their translation.This paper mainly focuses on the translation of four-character Chinese idioms with color words in New Century Chinese-English Dictionary.The research shows that there are three strategies for Chinese fourcharacter idioms loaded with color words in the dictionaries:literal translation,free translation and the integration of literal translation and annotative translation.

The Application of Translation Strategies in the Chinese—Specific New Words to English

With China's all-round social development,especially entering the 21century,the social economy,science and technology and also the language changes are in a fast speed.Particularly,the growth of the Chinese-specific new words is much faster than any other periods.Along with the intercultural communication,the English translation of Chinese-specific new words has become a new research focus.Firstly,the paper is to introduce the growth background of the new lexical words,and then gives a definition and classifies them into the specific fields,after that the paper will discuss the two translation strategies-domestication and foreignization in translating the Chinese-specific new words to English.Comparing the strengthens and shortcomings of the two strategies,the paper draws a conclusion—regard the two translation strategies in a dialectical way.

A Stylistic Perspective on Translation of Reduplicated Words in Classical Chinese Poetry

Chinese poetry has a very long and remarkable history.It is one of the most important representatives of China's ancient civilization of 5000 years.Chinese poetry utilizes quite a large number of methods in order to be more melodious and charming.Reduplicated words,as a figure of speech,are one of the most frequently used form among them.Reduplicated words as an active rhetorical device can add more flavor and taste to poems.They have the advantages of expressing the stylistic beauty effectively in form,sound and sense,thus push the article to its topmost aesthetic beauty.This paper,from a stylistic perspective,first discusses and argues the translatability of reduplicated words and then the importance to maintain the style of reduplicated words.After that it tries hard to put forward some favorable ways of dealing with the translation of reduplicated words so that reduplicated words in classical Chinese poetry can be appropriately translated without damage to the original style and flavor.

A Study on Translation Strategies of Culturally-Loaded Words—Take the American Version of Empresses in the Palace as an Example

Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and the world are becoming more frequent with the predominant feature that increasing Chinese films and television dramas are going to the globe.Due to different cultural backgrounds,the translation of culturally-loaded words becomes a major difficulty in the subtitles.This article is based on the popular TV seriesEmpresses in the Palace in the Chinese version and the American version,dividing the culturally-loaded words in the play into:social culturallyloaded words,ecological culturally-loaded words,religious culturally-loaded words,material culturally-loaded words,and linguistic culturally-loaded words.Since the translation of subtitles is affected by time and space and other factors,its strategy also needs to be adjusted.This article analyzes four kinds of translation strategies adopted in the play respectively,i.e.transliteration,literal translation,free translation,omission,and alternative.

Comments on Nigel Wiseman s A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine(Ⅰ)——On the“Word-for-word”Literal Approach to Translation

Comments were made on the ＂word-for-word＂ literal translation method used by Mr. Nigel Wiseman in A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine. He believes that only literal translation can reflect Chinese medical concepts accurately. The so-called ＂word-for-word＂ translation is actually ＂English-word-for- Chinese-character＂ translation. First, the authors of the dictionary made a list of Single Characters with English Equivalents, and then they gave each character of the medical term an English equivalent according to the list. Finally, they made some minor modifications to make the rendering grammatically smoother. Many English terms thus produced are confusing. The defect of the word-for-word literal translation stems from the erroneous idea that a single character constitutes the basic element of meaning corresponding to the notion of ＂word＂ in English, and the meaning of a disyllabic or polysyllabic Chinese word is the simple addition of the constituent characters. Another big mistake is the negligence of the polysemy of Chinese characters. One or two English equivalents can by no means cover all the various meanings of a single character which is a polysemous monosyllabic word. Various examples were cited from this dictionary to illustrate the mistakes.

Intercultural Communication and Chinese Tourism Texts Translation

Intercultural communication language plays a crucial role in our global tourism.When we are doing translation we are doing intercultural communication in a sense,so it is necessary for translators to have intercultural communication awareness and be sensitive to the cultural elements in translation.Taking the perspective of intercultural communication,this paper analyses the cultural elements in Chinese tourism material translation in terms of culturally-loaded words and terms,and presents certain translation techniques a translator can use to deal with culturally-loaded words in their translation.

Translation Strategy of Chinese Culture-loaded Lexes and the Dissemination of Chinese Culture

A Study on German Translation Strategies of Culture-Loaded Words in Documentary Hexi Corridor(Expert)by Adaptation Theory

This paper deals with the translation strategies of Chinese Culture-Loaded Words from the perspective of adaptation theory.It is based on the translation text of the sixth episode“Silk Road”and the seventh episode“Dunhuang”of the documentary Hexi Corridor.Many words with Chinese cultural connotations appear in the subtitles of this documentary.This paper will be divided into four parts.The first part and the second part deal with the basic theories,i.e.,definition of Chinese Culture-Loaded Words and of adaptation theory.The original text is analysed in the third part.This part deals with the background and specifics of the language of the documentary film Hexi Corridor.The fourth part deals with the difficulties encountered by the author in translation practice and the corresponding solutions adopted by the author.The translation difficulties are solved by five translation methods,namely transliteration,loan translation,substitution,interpretation,and adaptation.

Hybridity and Media Translation

In recent years,abundant words with Chinese characteristics in media translation show that on the one hand,the unique society,politics,economics and culture,and on the other hand,the important source of foreign words.According to post colonial cultural translation theory,through different hybridization tactics,they formed the third part,which is different from the source language and target language,and is the product of globalization.This notion of hybridity not only has great bearing on translators’selection of translating strategies,but also helps to change some of the accepted conception about translation,and thus enables us to have a better understanding of media translation.This promotes China’s discourse power in international society and the objectivity of reports of China,which constructs the third space in media translation between the West and China.

WNCT:一种WordNet概念自动翻译方法

WordNet是在自然语言处理领域有重要作用的英语词汇知识库,该文提出了一种将WordNet中词汇概念自动翻译为中文的方法。首先,利用电子词典和术语翻译工具将英语词汇在义项的粒度上翻译为中文;其次,将特定概念中词汇的正确义项选择看作分类问题,归纳出基于翻译唯一性、概念内和概念间翻译交集、中文短语结构规则,以及基于PMI的翻译相关性共12个特征,训练分类模型实现正确义项的选择。实验结果表明,该方法对WordNet 3.0中概念翻译的覆盖率为85.21%,准确率为81.37%。

Integrating Pronunciation into Chinese-Vietnamese Statistical Machine Translation

Statistical machine translation for low-resource language suffers from the lack of abundant training corpora. Several methods, such as the use of a pivot language, have been proposed as a bridge to translate from one language to another. However, errors will accumulate during the extensive translation pipelines. In this paper, we propose an approach to low-resource language translation by exploiting the pronunciation correlations between languages. We find that the pronunciation features can improve both Chinese-Vietnamese and Vietnamese- Chinese translation qualities. Experimental results show that our proposed model yields effective improvements, and the translation performance （bilingual evaluation understudy score） is improved by a maximum value of 1.03.

1905年问世的《中德字典》是第一本由国人编译的德汉双语词典,作为历史文本在中西方文化交流过程中承担着双向文化沟通的桥梁作用,是中德文化交流中的重要里程碑。西方近代工业革命以来产生了大量新生事物,这些包含新学科、技术观念的术语通过双语词典实现了在汉语中的传递。以《中德字典》为研究对象,阐明编者身份、编纂缘由和体例,剖析词汇释义方法,梳理旧词汇、俗语俚语在德汉翻译中使用和外来语的翻译方法。

模因传播视角下中国特色交通热词英译策略初探

中国特色交通热词模因对外传播既可以带动技术的国际交流与合作,又可以扩大中国交通文化国际影响力,将中国智慧和中国方案向全世界展示和译介。因此,从模因传播视角出发,结合中国特色交通热词的特征,尝试用“一一对等法”“举一反三法”“无中生有法”对具体案例进行实践分析,将在生物进化过程中基因的遗传复制与文化传递进行隐喻联动,探讨跨文化语境下语言模因和文化模因的传播实践。

功能对等理论视角下中国文化负载词的翻译研究——以2017~2022年大学英语四级段落翻译为例

自十八大报告提出“增强文化自信”以来,中国传统文化受到了高度关注。四级英语考试中大量中国文化负载词的出现体现了这一时代的发展和要求。文章基于功能对等理论,以2017年6月到2022年12月的四级翻译真题为研究文本,根据分类采用音译、直译、意译等方法翻译出其文化内涵和意义,从而提高大学生英语四级考试汉译英的能力,实现文化的有效传播,提高民族文化自信。

同译同形性对韩国留学生汉语三字组合加工的影响

同译性,即词语搭配在母语和目的语中的翻译具有一致性,对二语词汇加工的影响已经在多种不同语言的习得中得到验证。但是,当母语和目的语同属汉字文化圈时,在翻译同译性的基础上词语之间还存在是否同形的差异。本文通过词汇判断实验,考察在具备同译性条件下,同形性对韩国留学生汉语三字组合加工的影响。结果显示,同译同形性对三字组合加工有影响,具体表现为同译同形组的反应时比同译不同形组更短,二者差异达到显著水平。本研究支持双语词汇通达的非选择性激活。

汉魏六朝乐府诗中服饰文化词英译对比分析——以许渊冲和汪榕培译本为例

汉魏六朝乐府诗中涉及诸多具有时代烙印的传统服饰,它们是中华民族特有的民族社会符号,像《孔雀东南飞》《陌上桑》等作品可谓是其中的典型代表。通过选取许渊冲和汪榕培两个权威译本中共同出现的诗歌进行分析,确定其中服饰文化词的具体数量及类别。同时从翻译方法和诗体美学两个层面入手,对其英译特点与内在文化内涵进行梳理分析,探讨服饰文化词在两译本中的直译意译之别以及在韵律、意象和修辞上的差异。

文化负载词的翻译策略探究——以《活着》日译本为例

本文基于奈达提出的文化负载词定义及分类标准,参照艾克西拉主张的文化专有项翻译策略,讨论并分析小说《活着》中的文化负载词的日译策略,研究发现:(1)物质文化、社会生活文化、历史典故、宗教文化负载词主要采用了同化策略;(2)语言文化负载词主要采用了同化及语言翻译策略;(3)固有名称文化负载词主要采用重复、转换拼写、文内注释结合的翻译策略。
