On Translation of Children’s Literature Based on Reception Aesthetics:A Case Study of The Secret Garden

Grounded in reader-centered theories,Reception Aesthetics prioritizes the active engagement and acceptance of target readers.This study examines the translation of children’s literature through the lens of Reception Aesthetics,using Li Wenjun’s rendition of The Secret Garden as a case study.The objective is to scrutinize various aspects of the translation-including vocabulary,syntax,rhetorical devices,and cultural nuances-and to discern how the adaptation and application of diverse translation strategies cater to the aesthetic expectations.

On Children's Literature Translation from the Perspective of Skopos Theory——A Case Study on Harry Potter

The translation of the children's literature,as a branch of literature bears its own distinctive features,which is an attractivefield to study.The flourishing contemporary western translation theories provide new perspectives for the translation studies.Among thetheories,Skopos theory raised by German scholars is unique.It was developed by Hans Vermeer,which has provided theoretical supportfor children's literature translation.The thesis attempts to discuss the translation of children's literature from skopos theory with a casestudy comparing the two Chinese versions of Harry Potter.This paper focuses on whether the two Chinese versions pertain to specificgroup of readers like children and whether they are attractive enough to cater to children by way of choosing simple words,sentences,etc,which underscores that Han's Vermeer skopos theory counts a lot in children's literature translation.By its guidance,the transla-tion of children's literature will arouse more children's interest.

The manipulative factors behind translated literature： A case study of the Chinese translation of The Gadfly by LI Liang-min

The Gadfly written by Irish authoress Ethel Lilian Voynich remains silent with her work in the Western world. However, after its translation and publication in China in the 1950s by LI Liang-min, it becomes a revolutionary canon and enjoys the equal popularity with some Soviet progressive revolutionary fictions which were prevailing in China. The Gadfly has enormous influence and appeal in China. It was an indubitable canon in readers＇ heart at that time. But the translated version that people read is an abridgement, which includes more than 60 deletions. It is indicated from the analysis that the canonization of The Gadfly in China is far from a casual phenomenon. Instead, it is the result of the manipulation of the prevailing ideology and poetics.

＂New＂ Translations of Japanese Literature： Socio-cultural Impacts on the Japanese Mind

In terms of translation theory today, the essential discussions of ＂otherness＂, coupled with the agenda of bilateral approaches to its untranslatability, are much more intense than ever. The stereotypical images of Japan as something quite alien yet enchanting in Japanese literature, in The Tale of Genji for instance, are drastically different from those in modem novels, where the experience of conflicts with the West in the course of modernization could not be ignored. Shusaku Endo＇s Silence for example, paradoxically questions the translatability of Christianity in the historical context of the Japanese mind. By reading some translated texts of Japanese literature, we come to be aware of the essential factors of＂otherness＂ inherent in Japanese culture and language which, in some socio-cultural ways, has had an interesting effect on Japanese minds. With the growing interest in ＂world literature,＂ ＂otherness＂ and ＂untranslatability＂ illuminated in the translations of Japanese literature offer a new perspective with which we can re-think our sense of history of modernization on the one hand; and re-evaluate the uniqueness of Japanese language on the other. The remarkable influence of translators whose mother tongue is not Japanese, but who have an excellent command of the language, enables a new Japanese culture to emerge. This is evident in the works of Arthur Binard, an American poet and translator, who enthusiastically criticizes the Japanese policy of atomic energy in his translations of the Japanese poems after World War II, and in the very inspiring essays on Japanese by Roger Pulvers, an Australian writer and playwright who won prizes for his translations of Kenji Miyazawa. Along with such new trend of translations of Japanese literature, how it affects the Japanese mind will be discussed.

The Poison of Polygamy:Genre of the English Translation

When the Chinese-language The Poison of Polygamy was translated into English,some critics identified the work as picaresque.Skeptical of this conclusion,the author of this paper broadens the field of inquiry to suggest classification in an emigrant sensational genre.Briefly,the first two plots of the multi-strand work unfold the adventures of Chinese emigrants travelling by sea and land to Melbourne’s Gold Mountain.Interestingly,we are also afforded a glimpse of emigrant miners’cooperation regardless of race and colour when a mine disaster occurs.The work provides sharp recognition of migrants’dilemmas,such as marriage,before tackling the bigamy issue,the gender war,the fallen lifestyle of the female protagonist and so on.As the work unfolds,further shocking tales of murders and indulgence are revealed.Unlike the picareque’s episodic style,the translated Poison of Polygamy is coherent,realistic,serious and critical,and completely lacking in both sarcasm and playfulness.To investigate the appropriateness of assigning the work to the picaresque genre,the paper compares briefly with representative Spanish picaresque works such as Lazarillo and Gusman and English canonical Moll Flanders,watching carefully for commonalities.However,The Poison of Polygamy would seem to resonate more with Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret,a sensational fiction which shocked the English world in the 1860s.The contexts of both novels are close,mid-Victorian and Edwardian,where the latter is a continuation of the Victorians.The author is further enlightened by research results of literary translators who advocate that a text,once translated into a target language,becomes a canon of that culture and is cherished as such by its readers-as in the case of Shakespeare being revered as a German poet when read in translation.From this experiment the paper deems that cross-lingual comparative literature is not only possible but significant and resourceful.

Study on the Application of Gestalt Theory in CLT

CLT is an activity of aesthetic representation,in which the translators undertake analysis,synthesis,and reconstruction of the aesthetic qualities inherent in the original work until the representation of these aesthetic qualities is achieved.Gestalt theory could help the translator to represent aesthetic qualities of the source text in the target text in CLT.

Teaching Translation From the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Translation for language teaching is different from general translation which is characterized with Faithfulness, Expressiveness, and Elegance. The differences lie in vocabulary, structure, and discourse. The extreme emphasis of translation skills will make it hard to learn certain language elements for the English learners. The paper makes an analysis on the three levels of translation for language teaching from the perspective of Skopos Theory, aiming at drawing attention from the translation teachers to care more about students＇ demands of learning language elements through translation.

Guo Moruo, born in Sichuan province, is one of the greatest translators m Chinese literature translation. He has ncn literary works and translation works in his life. Combing with writing experience and a wealth of translation practice, he has summarized and extracted the great translation theory including the meaning of translation, the translator＇s cultivation, translation principles and methods, especially the ＂matchmaker＂ and the ＂virgin＂ theory, flavor translation, resonance theory, translation criticism view, translating verse as verse theory, retranslation view. His translation works and translation theories have special contribution to the？translation cause of China, and all his translation theories are worth of learning.

Two Translations of Ji Yun＇s Close Scrutiny： the Translator, the Reader and the Settings of Translation

This article focuses on two English translations of Ji Yun＇s 纪昀 eigh- teenth-century collection of ＂stories of the strange,＂ Random Jottings at the Cottage of Close Scrutiny （Yuewei caotang biji 阅微草堂笔记）. The translation done by Leo Tak-hung Chan is set within the context of his 1998 sinological monograph, while David Pollard＇s recent translation, published in 2014, stands as an edited volume of translation oriented toward the general reader. Referring to textual and paratextual elements in these two translations, I hope to show how the ＂setting＂ of a translation modulates its tone and message, which in turn unfolds with the selection, style and overall structure of the translation. I also draw from an actual dialog between Leo Chan and David Pollard, which evolves around the various aspects in translating Ji Yun＇s work and the more general issues in sinology and translating Chinese literature. The dialog between the two translators of Ji Yun further illustrates the translators＇ approaches to the original text, their mediating efforts toward crosscultural readability and literary felicity and specifically, how the state of mind of a translator might come into play with the ＂flavor＂ of a translation.
