Comparison of ground truth location of earthquake from InSAR and from ambient seismic noise: A case study of the 1998 Zhangbei earthquake

Because ambient seismic noise provides estimated Green’s function （EGF） between two sites with high accuracy, Rayleigh wave propagation along the path connecting the two sites is well resolved. Therefore, earthquakes which are close to one seismic station can be well located with calibration extracting from EGF. We test two algorithms in locating the 1998 Zhangbei earthquake, one algorithm is waveform-based, and the other is traveltime-based. We first compute EGF between station ZHB （a station about 40 km away from the epicenter） and five IC/IRIS stations. With the waveform-based approach, we calculate 1D synthetic single-force Green’s functions between ZHB and other four stations, and obtain traveltime corrections by correlating synthetic Green’s functions with EGFs in period band of 10–30 s. Then we locate the earthquake by minimizing the differential travel times between observed earthquake waveform and the 1D synthetic earthquake waveforms computed with focal mechanism provided by Global CMT after traveltime correction from EGFs. This waveform-based approach yields a location which error is about 13 km away from the location observed with InSAR. With the traveltime-based approach, we begin with measuring group velocity from EGFs as well as group arrival time on observed earthquake waveforms, and then locate the earthquake by minimizing the difference between observed group arrival time and arrival time measured on EGFs. This traveltime-based approach yields accuracy of 3 km, Therefore it is feasible to achieve GT5 （ground truth location with accuracy 5 km） with ambient seismic noises. The less accuracy of the waveform-based approach was mainly caused by uncertainty of focal mechanism.

Cost Sharing Based Truthful Spectrum Auction with Collusion-Proof

Spectrum auction is an important approach of spectrum distribution in cognitive radio networks. However, a single secondary user(SU) probably can't afford the price of spectrum. Multiple SUs grouping together to participate in the auction as a whole is helpful to increase purchasing power. However, SUs could suffer from a new group cheating problem, i.e., parts of users conspire to manipulate the auction by submitting untruthful bids. Existing auction mechanisms were mainly designed to be strategy-proof only for individual user and can't deal with group cheating. In this paper, a novel spectrum auction mechanism called COSTAG(COst Sharing based Truthful Auction with Group-buying) is proposed to address the group cheating problem. COSTAG consists of a grouping rule to perform grouping and a payment rule to determine the market-clearing price in the spectrum auction. Different from single-echelon pricing approach employed in existing works, a multi-echelon pricing strategy is designed to increase the transaction rate and optimize social profit for the auction. Comprehensive theoretical analysis shows that COSTAG can satisfy the crucial economic robustness properties, both individual and group truthfulness. Simulations demonstrate that comparing with existing works, COSTAG can improve the system performance significantly.

Untold Truth of Foreign Labour Migration and Increasing Aspiration within Youth in Nepal

The dramatic incensement in mobility indicates that youth are the most mobile population who migrate globally for various purposes.The youth in Nepal are not exceptional as hundreds of thousand youth migrate for foreign employment especially in different Gulf countries and Malaysia every year.Although the causes of youth mobility in Nepal vividly explored,there is common understanding among the scholars about the long established youth culture of foreign migration for employment.The foreign employment has significant contribution in national gross domestic product however the youth who are the economic contributors experience various vulnerabilities and even lose their life while they are abroad.Regardless of difficulties in the foreign land,youth often glorify their experiences and inspire many others aspirants.In this context,this study explores experiences of foreign migrant workers and their perception about abroad work.Case studies were conducted amongst new aspirants and returnees who want to repeat foreign employment.This study reveals that youth,generally,prefer to glorify their abroad work experience rather than telling the truth.The migrant workers secure their position as a successor in the community by doing so.However,the overvalued experiences help aspire new one who see solution only in abroad for an illusionary successful life.

A qualitative study of the Omani physicians’ lived experience with truth disclosure to cancer patient

Objectives: The purpose of this phenomenological Qualitative Study is to gain an in depth understanding of the nature and meaning of the experiences of physicians in relation to truth disclosure and ethics of veracity when diagnosing cancer. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study using semi-structured interviews was conducted at Sultan Qaboos university hospital (SQUH), l to explore the Omani Physicians’ lived experiences with truth disclosure in patients who were diagnosed with cancer. The target population for this study is Omani physicians working in SQUH. The total of four participants was involved in this study. Results: Three essential themes were generated through the analysis of the participants’ descriptions of their perceptions and lived experiences as the following with their subthemes: the first theme is the clinical aspect of the experiences with three subthemes: 1) The ethical aspect and the physician’s attitude;2) The strategy of breaking bad news;3) Training and breaking bad news. The second theme is Cultural diversity with three subthemes: 1) Relatives preference;2) The patient education;3) The hospital setting. The third theme is the emotional aspect of the experiences with five subthemes: 1) Emotional sadness;2) Personal grief;3) Other emotions;4) The positive emotions;5) Control of the emotions. Conclusion: This study recommends: to build up appropriate measures and guidelines on the subject of truth telling and medical ethics, and to provide more training for the health care providers in the context of breaking bad news. In addition to add to the curriculum of medical colleges the basic ethical principles relevant to medical practice. Finally, to establish medical social work departments in SQUH, and other healthcare institutions in Oman.

The Normative Value of Truth and the Problem of Lie

The article concerns the normative value of truth in relation to lie. Based on arguments derived primarily from ancient philosophers （Eubulides, Plato, Aristotle）, medieval philosophers （St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas）, the thinker of the Renaissance---Machiavelli, the main philosopher of the Enlightenment--Kant, the 19th-century author of Beyond Good and Evil （Nietzsche）, and contemporary thinkers such as Derrida and Lacan, the author considers here truth as a normative value. Lying is relative to the truth, and it has no ontological legitimacy, even it cannot exist without truth itself. In the final part of the article, the author concludes that the truth, however, cannot lead to clearly had effects, be harmful or cause pain disproportionate to the effects caused by lie. Therefore, it must coexist with the good--the other parent value. Only when both values complement each other can we talk about the normative value of truth. The truth should be correlated with other values on which value systems are based, especially the good of a person or group of persons, avoiding harm towards others, and the protection of a person＇s health and life. Only then can the truth be appropriate to use. It is not an immovable foundation, but a dynamically functioning value, in which language and the ethical （active） dimensions provide the value of the specified situations. The truth can be a double-edged sword： It may hurt, but it can defend itself. The latter function seems to be the most important type of the normativity of truth.

The History of the Concept of“Truth-Making”

The conception of truth-making,albeit in a rudimentary form,could already be discerned in the writings of G.E.Moore and E.Husserl in the early 1900s.A few years later it was more extensively exploited by William James.It was Wittgenstein,however,who gave the concept a precise meaning.In 1913/1914 Wittgenstein advanced a theory of possible worlds,only one of which was real.Every proposition suggests a part of a possible world which does or does not correspond to parts of the real world.In the first case the proposition is true,in the second case false.Moreover,the part of the real world makes the sentence true.This part is a truth-maker,and the sentence is a truth-bearer.Surprisingly enough,Wittgenstein’s concept of truth-making had its family resemblance with William James’s conception of truth.In 1915 Wittgenstein stopped using the concept of truth-making-it was also not mentioned in the Tractatus.Unfortunately,Russell did not notice this and in 1918 he adopted the concept of truth-making.In the 1930s,it was used by some second generation analytic philosophers(Schlick,Stebbing,and Wisdom).However,it became rather popular among analytic philosophers only in the 1980s.

UAV-supported intelligent truth discovery to achieve low-cost communications in mobile crowd sensing

Unmanned and aerial systems as interactors among different system components for communications,have opened up great opportunities for truth data discovery in Mobile Crowd Sensing(MCS)which has not been properly solved in the literature.In this paper,an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles-supported Intelligent Truth Discovery(UAV-ITD)scheme is proposed to obtain truth data at low-cost communications for MCS.The main innovations of the UAV-ITD scheme are as follows:(1)UAV-ITD scheme takes the first step in employing UAV joint Deep Matrix Factorization(DMF)to discover truth data based on the trust mechanism for an Information Elicitation Without Verification(IEWV)problem in MCS.(2)This paper introduces a truth data discovery scheme for the first time that only needs to collect a part of n data samples to infer the data of the entire network with high accuracy,which saves more communication costs than most previous data collection schemes,where they collect n or kn data samples.Finally,we conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the UAV-ITD scheme.The results show that compared with previous schemes,our scheme can reduce estimated truth error by 52.25%–96.09%,increase the accuracy of workers’trust evaluation by 0.68–61.82 times,and save recruitment costs by 24.08%–54.15%in truth data discovery.

研究了史料《Truth》(中文名《真相》,是九一八事变后东北藉爱国知识子冒死搜集日军侵华的罪证材料,国联据此做出对九一八事变的首次定位)。认为该史料的发现,填补了日伪统治下东北民众反抗日本侵略历史的研究空白,展示了东北民众在国际上反对日本侵略的呼声。史料的曲折形成过程以及史料的客观性和实证性同东北人民武装抗争形成互补,有力地证明了东北各阶层人民合力抗日的史实。

Distribution Prediction Model of a Rare Orchid Species (<i>Vanda bicolor</i>Griff.) Using Small Sample Size

Advancement in field of GIS and Information Technology has taken conservation works and strategies a step further as most conservation works are now dependent on these technologies. The present study explores the prediction ability of MAXENT using a very low sample size by applying jackknife analysis over a well defined smaller region and using only climate data. Vanda bicolor is a horticulture important orchid grown in certain patches of North Eastern region of India and the species considered to be “Vulnerable”. Present study reports a distribution prediction model using different geo-climatic parameters for a small area. Model validation by ground truthing gives a significant successful result which clearly defines the ability of MAXENT prediction model to give high success rate (71%) with low training samples. Use of the low sample size over a larger area results in unstable models however application of these samples in smaller radius around the occurrence points could provide good working models.
