Possible Truths Inside Mistranslations―An Attempt at Understanding Mistranslations

This paper examines five cases of mistranslation to shed light on the deliverability and truthfulness of mistranslations.In some cases,a“mistranslation”turns out to be a brilliant translation.Case 1:At a meeting for the UN Security Council Resolution 242,an intentional mistranslation may have been conducted between English and French texts,so Arab nations and Israel would agree.Case 2:At the time of the Sino-Japan diplomatic normalization,Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka made an apology to China that was mistranslated into something banal sounding.Case 3:During his US visit to see President Reagan,Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone’s remarks for an aircraft carrier were mistranslated.Case 4:In TPP negotiations,an ultimatum was pronounced by a Japanese interpreter,although the Japanese negotiator had not said it.Case 5:At a Japanese event,a supposedly deaf composer was dubbed a“digital-age Beethoven”in English;but he replaced it with a“modern-day Beethoven”in Japanese to make himself sound more significant.In hindsight,some cases of mistranslations are hard to judge as mistakes.However,identifying mistranslations helps reveal cultural differences and complicated political differences,and can help improve the quality of translation and interpretation.

融合IMR-WGAN的时序数据修复方法

工业数据由于技术故障和人为因素通常导致数据异常,现有基于约束的方法因约束阈值设置的过于宽松或严格会导致修复错误,基于统计的方法因平滑修复机制导致对时间步长较远的异常值修复准确度较低.针对上述问题,提出了基于奖励机制的最小迭代修复和改进WGAN混合模型的时序数据修复方法.首先,在预处理阶段,保留异常数据,进行信息标注等处理,从而充分挖掘异常值与真实值之间的特征约束.其次,在噪声模块提出了近邻参数裁剪规则,用于修正最小迭代修复公式生成的噪声向量.将其传递至模拟分布模块的生成器中,同时设计了一个动态时间注意力网络层,用于提取时序特征权重并与门控循环单元串联组合捕捉不同步长的特征依赖,并引入递归多步预测原理共同提升模型的表达能力;在判别器中设计了Abnormal and Truth奖励机制和Weighted Mean Square Error损失函数共同反向优化生成器修复数据的细节和质量.最后,在公开数据集和真实数据集上的实验结果表明,该方法的修复准确度与模型稳定性显著优于现有方法.

A study of constraints on the constitutive relationships of electromagnetic medium based on generally acknowledged truths

The study of constraints on the constitutive relationships of electromagnetic media is of great importance in the aspects of the medium characteristics analysis, the new article material synthesis and the medium parameters reconstruction, etc. According to the fact that the constitutive relationships should not conflict with the general physical laws, the constraints that the constitutive relationships of electromagnetic medium must satisfy have been summarized in this paper. These constraints include determinacy principle, objectivity principle, causality principle and permission principle. And the parameter constraints of the arbitrary linear homogenous time-invariant medium are obtained following the minimum energy consumption principle. This work provides a new way of ascertaining the constitutive relationships of the electromagnetic medium.

Truth Discovery from Conflicting Data: A Survey

With the rocketing progress of the Internet, it is easier for people to get information about the objects that they are interested in. However, this information usually has conflicts. In order to resolve conflicts and get the true information, truth discovery has been proposed and received widespread attention. Many algorithms have been proposed to adapt to different scenarios. This paper aims to investigate these algorithms and summarize them from the perspective of algorithm models and specific concepts. Some classic datasets and evaluation metrics are given in this paper. Some future directions for readers are also provided to better understand the field of truth discovery.

Lightweight privacy-preserving truth discovery for vehicular air quality monitoring

Air pollution has become a global concern for many years.Vehicular crowdsensing systems make it possible to monitor air quality at a fine granularity.To better utilize the sensory data with varying credibility,truth discovery frameworks are introduced.However,in urban cities,there is a significant difference in traffic volumes of streets or blocks,which leads to a data sparsity problem for truth discovery.Protecting the privacy of participant vehicles is also a crucial task.We first present a data masking-based privacy-preserving truth discovery framework,which incorporates spatial and temporal correlations to solve the sparsity problem.To further improve the truth discovery performance of the presented framework,an enhanced version is proposed with anonymous communication and data perturbation.Both frameworks are more lightweight than the existing cryptography-based methods.We also evaluate the work with simulations and fully discuss the performance and possible extensions.

Cleaning of Multi-Source Uncertain Time Series Data Based on PageRank

There are errors in multi-source uncertain time series data.Truth discovery methods for time series data are effective in finding more accurate values,but some have limitations in their usability.To tackle this challenge,we propose a new and convenient truth discovery method to handle time series data.A more accurate sample is closer to the truth and,consequently,to other accurate samples.Because the mutual-confirm relationship between sensors is very similar to the mutual-quote relationship between web pages,we evaluate sensor reliability based on PageRank and then estimate the truth by sensor reliability.Therefore,this method does not rely on smoothness assumptions or prior knowledge of the data.Finally,we validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method on real-world and synthetic data sets,respectively.

The History of the Concept of“Truth-Making”

The conception of truth-making,albeit in a rudimentary form,could already be discerned in the writings of G.E.Moore and E.Husserl in the early 1900s.A few years later it was more extensively exploited by William James.It was Wittgenstein,however,who gave the concept a precise meaning.In 1913/1914 Wittgenstein advanced a theory of possible worlds,only one of which was real.Every proposition suggests a part of a possible world which does or does not correspond to parts of the real world.In the first case the proposition is true,in the second case false.Moreover,the part of the real world makes the sentence true.This part is a truth-maker,and the sentence is a truth-bearer.Surprisingly enough,Wittgenstein’s concept of truth-making had its family resemblance with William James’s conception of truth.In 1915 Wittgenstein stopped using the concept of truth-making-it was also not mentioned in the Tractatus.Unfortunately,Russell did not notice this and in 1918 he adopted the concept of truth-making.In the 1930s,it was used by some second generation analytic philosophers(Schlick,Stebbing,and Wisdom).However,it became rather popular among analytic philosophers only in the 1980s.

一种改进的轮廓提取评估算法

针对带有Ground Truth图的自然图像轮廓评估算法的轮廓提取准确率低并且不精确的问题,本文提出了一种邻域匹配算法,并且与原算法相结合,再将评估的准确率公式进行修改,得到了本文的轮廓提取评估算法。通过对Canny算子处理的轮廓提取图进行评估,并与原算法相比可知,本文算法提高了评估的轮廓提取准确率。

单称命题、真理与指称(英文)

单称命题观念的可理解性和合法性是当代弗雷格主义语义学与罗素主义语义学争论的焦点问题。在模态结构下,单称命题观念与一系列强有力的基本假设相冲突。普兰廷加等人发展了一个专门针对单称命题的标准论证,试图通过归谬论证来证明单称命题观念是不融贯的。面对之于单称命题理论的这一挑战,一种颇具潜力的应对策略是区分两种真理观念,即命题在"世界里"为真与命题在"世界上"为真的区分。此策略试图表明,承诺单称命题"在世界上为真"并不导致与基本假设相冲突。本文在此专门考察这一策略的可行性。基于真理问题与指称问题的内在联系,即语句指称(真值)是语词指称的函项,我们力图证明,两种真理观念的区分实际上可还原为著名的顽固指称固定性和持续指称固定性的区分。而后一区分可以相当严格地在卡普兰的二维语义学框架下得到说明。此框架的实质基础是指称纳入的概念。文章基于对空名语义学的相关分析,通过借鉴埃文斯的描述性名称构造方式,构造了一种独特的绝对空名。最后,以此为基础,我们试图表明卡普兰框架下的指称"纳入"概念难以贯彻到底,继而,以之为基础来为单称命题观念提供辩护的策略也难以维系。

学习外语、欣赏外国名著或翻译外语作品,都有一个理解的问题。不同的理解,产生对事物的不同认识和判断,造成解释事物或处理问题的不同方式或结果。但构成理解的要素是多方面和多种多样的,这里着重从“事先积累材料”(pre-information)的角度探讨问题。 人脑像一部计算机,如果事先没有把程序设计语言输入它的存储器里面,这部“电脑”的“脑子”是空空如也,也就谈不上什么“人工智能”,更谈不上发挥这种智能的作用了。这说明事先积累材料的重要性。
