Typica...Understanding fingering, as a challenge to stable displacement during the immiscible flow, has become a crucial phenomenon for geological carbon sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and groundwater protection. Typically governed by gravity, viscous and capillary forces, these factors lead invasive fluids to occupy pore space irregularly and incompletely. Previous studies have demonstrated capillary numbers, describing the viscous and capillary forces, to quantificationally induce evolution of invasion patterns. While the evolution mechanisms of invasive patterns have not been deeply elucidated under the constant capillary number and three variable parameters including velocity, viscosity, and interfacial tension. Our research employs two horizontal visualization systems and a two-phase laminar flow simulation to investigate the tendency of invasive pattern transition by various parameters at the pore scale. We showed that increasing invasive viscosity or reducing interfacial tension in a homogeneous pore space significantly enhanced sweep efficiency, under constant capillary number. Additionally, in the fingering crossover pattern, the region near the inlet was prone to capillary fingering with multi-directional invasion, while the viscous fingering with unidirectional invasion was more susceptible occurred in the region near the outlet. Furthermore, increasing invasive viscosity or decreasing invasive velocity and interfacial tension promoted the extension of viscous fingering from the outlet to the inlet, presenting that the subsequent invasive fluid flows toward the outlet. In the case of invasive trunk along a unidirectional path, the invasive flow increased exponentially closer to the outlet, resulting in a significant decrease in the width of the invasive interface. Our work holds promising applications for optimizing invasive patterns in heterogeneous porous media.展开更多

Determining the appropriate strength of the artificial viscosity is an art and strongly depends on the particular problem and experience of the researcher. The objective of this study is to pose the problem of finding the appropriate strength of the artificial viscosity as an optimization problem and solve this problem using machine learning (ML) tools, specifically using surrogate models based on Gaussian Process regression (GPR) and Bayesian analysis. We describe the optimization method and discuss various practical details of its implementation. The shock-containing problems for which we apply this method all have been implemented in the LANL code FLAG (Burton in Connectivity structures and differencing techniques for staggered-grid free-Lagrange hydrodynamics, Tech. 文摘The fluid’s viscosity significantly affects the performance of a centrifugal pump. The entropy production method and leakage are employed to analyze the performance changes under various viscosities by numerical simulation and validated by experiments. The results showed that increasing viscosity reduces both the pump head and efficiency. In addition, the optimal operating point shifts to the left.Leakage is influenced by vortex distribution in the front chamber and boundary layer thickness in wear-ring clearance, leading to an initial increase and subsequent decrease in leakage with increasing viscosity. The total entropy production Spro,Total inside the pump rises with increasing viscosity. The different mechanisms dominate under varying conditions:Turbulent dissipation dominates at low viscosity.Under high-viscosity conditions, energy loss is primarily caused by direct dissipation Spro,D and wall entropy production Spro,W.This study provides a deeper and more objective understanding of the energy characteristics of centrifugal pumps handling fluids of various viscosity, potentially aiding in optimizing pump design and improving energy conversion efficiency.

文摘Viscosity is one of the most important fundamental properties of fluids. However, accurate acquisition of viscosity for ionic liquids(ILs)remains a critical challenge. In this study,an approach integrating prior physical knowledge into the machine learning(ML)model was proposed to predict the viscosity reliably. The method was based on 16 quantum chemical descriptors determined from the first principles calculations and used as the input of the ML models to represent the size, structure, and interactions of the ILs.Three strategies based on the residuals of the COSMO-RS model were created as the output of ML,where the strategy directly using experimental data was also studied for comparison. The performance of six ML algorithms was compared in all strategies, and the CatBoost model was identified as the optimal one.The strategies employing the relative deviations were superior to that using the absolute deviation, and the relative ratio revealed the systematic prediction error of the COSMO-RS model. The CatBoost model based on the relative ratio achieved the highest prediction accuracy on the test set(R^(2)=0.9999,MAE=0.0325),reducing the average absolute relative deviation(AARD)in modeling from 52.45% to 1.54%.Features importance analysis indicated the average energy correction,solvation-free energy, and polarity moment were the key influencing the systematic deviation.

文摘Understanding fingering, as a challenge to stable displacement during the immiscible flow, has become a crucial phenomenon for geological carbon sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and groundwater protection. Our work holds promising applications for optimizing invasive patterns in heterogeneous porous media.

文摘Polymer flooding in fractured wells has been extensively applied in oilfields to enhance oil recovery. In contrast to water, polymer solution exhibits non-Newtonian and nonlinear behavior such as effects of shear thinning and shear thickening, polymer convection, diffusion, adsorption retention, inaccessible pore volume and reduced effective permeability.Meanwhile, the flux density and fracture conductivity along the hydraulic fracture are generally non-uniform due to the effects of pressure distribution, formation damage, and proppant breakage. In this paper,we present an oil-water two-phase flow model that captures these complex non-Newtonian and nonlinear behavior, and non-uniform fracture characteristics in fractured polymer flooding. The hydraulic fracture is firstly divided into two parts:high-conductivity fracture near the wellbore and low-conductivity fracture in the far-wellbore section.A hybrid grid system, including perpendicular bisection(PEBI)and Cartesian grid,is applied to discrete the partial differential flow equations, and the local grid refinement method is applied in the near-wellbore region to accurately calculate the pressure distribution and shear rate of polymer solution. The combination of polymer behavior characterizations and numerical flow simulations are applied, resulting in the calculation for the distribution of water saturation, polymer concentration and reservoir pressure.Compared with the polymer flooding well with uniform fracture conductivity, this non-uniform fracture conductivity model exhibits the larger pressure difference, and the shorter bilinear flow period due to the decrease of fracture flow ability in the far-wellbore section. The field case of the fall-off test demonstrates that the proposed method characterizes fracture characteristics more accurately, and yields fracture half-lengths that better match engineering reality, enabling a quantitative segmented characterization of the near-wellbore section with high fracture conductivity and the far-wellbore section with low fracture conductivity. The novelty of this paper is the analysis of pressure performances caused by the fracture dynamics and polymer rheology,as well as an analysis method that derives formation and fracture parameters based on the pressure and its derivative curves.

文摘To accurately model flows with shock waves using staggered-grid Lagrangian hydrodynamics, the artificial viscosity has to be introduced to convert kinetic energy into internal energy, thereby increasing the entropy across shocks. Rep. UCRL-JC-110555, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, CA, 1992, 1992, in Consistent finite-volume discretization of hydrodynamic conservation laws for unstructured grids, Tech. Rep. First, we apply ML to find optimal values to isolated shock problems of different strengths. Second, we apply ML to optimize the viscosity for a one-dimensional (1D) propagating detonation problem based on Zel’dovich-von Neumann-Doring (ZND) (Fickett and Davis in Detonation: theory and experiment. Dover books on physics. Dover Publications, Mineola, 2000) detonation theory using a reactive burn model. We compare results for default (currently used values in FLAG) and optimized values of the artificial viscosity for these problems demonstrating the potential for significant improvement in the accuracy of computations.

文摘A numerical study based on a two-dimensional two-phase SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics)model to analyze the action of water waves on open-type sea access roads is presented. The study is a continuation of the analyses presented by Chen et al.(2022),in which the sea access roads are semi-immersed.In this new configuration, the sea access roads are placed above the still water level, therefore the presence of the air phase becomes a relevant issue in the determination of the wave forces acting on the structures.Indeed, the comparison of wave forces on the open-type sea access roads obtained from the single and two-phase SPH models with the experimental results shows that the latter are in much better agreement. So in the numerical simulations,a two-phaseδ-SPH model is adopted to investigate the dynamical problems.Based on the numerical results, the maximum horizontal and uplifting wave forces acting on the sea access roads are analyzed by considering different wave conditions and geometries of the structures. In particular, the presence of the girder is analyzed and the differences in the wave forces due to the air cushion effects which are created below the structure are highlighted.

文摘An optical-tweezers-based dual-frequency-band particle tracking system was designed and fabricated for liquid viscositydetection. On the basis of the liquid viscosity dependent model of the particle’s restricted Brownian motion with theFax´en correction taken into account, the liquid viscosity and optical trap stiffness were determined by fitting the theoreticalprediction with the measured power spectral densities of the particle’s displacement and velocity that were derived from thedual-frequency-band particle tracking data. When the SiO2 beads were employed as probe particles in the measurements ofdifferent kinds of liquids, the measurement results exhibit a good agreement with the reported results, as well as a detectionuncertainty better than 4.6%. This kind of noninvasive economical technique can be applied in diverse environments forboth in situ and ex situ viscosity detection of liquids.

文摘Humic acids(HAs)are widely used as filtrate and viscosity reducers in drilling fluids. However, their practical utility is limited due to poor stability in salt resistance and high-temperature resistance.Hightemperature coal pitch(CP)is a by-product from coal pyrolysis above 650℃.The substance's molecular structure is characterized by a dense arrangement of aromatic hydrocarbon and alkyl substituents. This unique structure gives it unique chemical properties and excellent drilling performance, surpassing traditional humic acids in drilling operations.Potassium humate is prepared from CP(CP-HA-K)by thermal catalysis.A new type of high-quality humic acid temperature-resistant viscosity-reducer(Graft CP-HA-K polymer)is synthesized with CP-HA-K,hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile sodium salt(Na-HPAN),urea,formaldehyde,phenol and acrylamide(AAM)as raw materials. The experimental results demonstrate that the most favorable conditions for the catalytic preparation of CP-HA-K are 1 wt%catalyst dosage,30 wt%KOH dosage,a reaction temperature of 250℃,and a reaction time of 2 h,resulting in a maximum yield of CP-HA-K of 39.58%.The temperature resistance of the Graft CP-HA-K polymer is measured to be 177.39℃,which is 55.39℃ higher than that of commercial HA-K.This is due to the abundant presence of amide, hydroxyl, and amine functional groups in the Graft CP-HA-K polymer, which increase the length of the carbon chains, enhance the electrostatic repulsion on the surface of solid particles. After being aged to 120℃ for a specified duration, the Graft CP-HA-K polymer demonstrates significantly higher viscosity reduction(42.12%)compared to commercial HA-K(C-HA-K).Furthermore,the Graft CP-HA-K polymer can tolerate a high salt concentration of 8000 mg.L-1,measured after the addition of optimum amount of 3 wt%Graft CP-HA-K polymer. The action mechanism of Graft CP-HA-K polymer on high-temperature drilling fluid is that the Graft CP-HA-K polymer can increase the repulsive force between solid particles and disrupt bentonite's reticulation structure.Overall, this research provides novelty insights into the synthesis of artificial humic acid materials and the development of temperature-resistant viscosity reducers, offering a new avenue for the utilization of CP resources.

文摘A simulated oil viscosity prediction model is established according to the relationship between simulated oil viscosity and geometric mean value of T2spectrum,and the time-varying law of simulated oil viscosity in porous media is quantitatively characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)experiments of high multiple waterflooding.A new NMR wettability index formula is derived based on NMR relaxation theory to quantitatively characterize the time-varying law of rock wettability during waterflooding combined with high-multiple waterflooding experiment in sandstone cores. The remaining oil viscosity in the core is positively correlated with the displacing water multiple. The remaining oil viscosity increases rapidly when the displacing water multiple is low,and increases slowly when the displacing water multiple is high. The variation of remaining oil viscosity is related to the reservoir heterogeneity. The stronger the reservoir homogeneity, the higher the content of heavy components in the remaining oil and the higher the viscosity. The reservoir wettability changes after water injection:the oil-wet reservoir changes into water-wet reservoir, while the water-wet reservoir becomes more hydrophilic;the degree of change enhances with the increase of displacing water multiple. There is a high correlation between the time-varying oil viscosity and the time-varying wettability, and the change of oil viscosity cannot be ignored. The NMR wettability index calculated by considering the change of oil viscosity is more consistent with the tested Amott(spontaneous imbibition)wettability index, which agrees more with the time-varying law of reservoir wettability.

文摘Based on the displacement discontinuity method and the discrete fracture unified pipe network model,a sequential iterative numerical method was used to build a fracturing-production integrated numerical model of shale gas well considering the two-phase flow of gas and water. The model accounts for the influence of natural fractures and matrix properties on the fracturing process and directly applies post-fracturing formation pressure and water saturation distribution to subsequent well shut-in and production simulation, allowing for a more accurate fracturing-production integrated simulation. The results show that the reservoir physical properties have great impacts on fracture propagation, and the reasonable prediction of formation pressure and reservoir fluid distribution after the fracturing is critical to accurately predict the gas and fluid production of the shale gas wells.Compared with the conventional method, the proposed model can more accurately simulate the water and gas production by considering the impact of fracturing on both matrix pressure and water saturation. The established model is applied to the integrated fracturing-production simulation of practical horizontal shale gas wells. The simulation results are in good agreement with the practical production data, thus verifying the accuracy of the model.

文摘Fractal time-dependent issues in fluid dynamics provide a distinct difficulty in numerical analysis due to their complex characteristics, necessitating specialized computing techniques for precise and economical solutions. This study presents an innovative computational approach to tackle these difficulties. The main focus is applying the Fractal Runge-Kutta Method to model the time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)Newtonian fluid with rescaled viscosity flow on Riga plates. An efficient computational scheme is proposed for handling fractal time-dependent problems in flow phenomena. The scheme is comprised of three stages and constructed using three different time levels. The stability of the scheme is shown by employing the Fourier series analysis to solve scalar problems. The scheme’s convergence is guaranteed for a time fractal partial differential equations system. The scheme is applied to the dimensionless fractal heat and mass transfer model of incompressible, unsteady, laminar,Newtonian fluid with rescaled viscosity flow over the flat and oscillatory Riga plates under the effects of space-and temperature-dependent heat sources. The first-order back differences discretize the continuity equation. The results show that skin friction local Nusselt number declines by raising the coefficient of the temperature-dependent term of heat source and Eckert number. The numerical simulations provide valuable insights into fluid dynamics, explicitly highlighting the influence of the temperature-dependent coefficient of the heat source and the Eckert number on skin friction and local Nusselt number.

文摘The gas-water two-phaseflow occurring as a result of fracturingfluidflowback phenomena is known to impact significantly the productivity of shale gas well.In this work, this two-phaseflow has been simulated in the framework of a hybrid approach partially relying on the embedded discrete fracture model(EDFM).This model assumes the region outside the stimulated reservoir volume(SRV)as a single-medium while the SRV region itself is described using a double-medium strategy which can account for thefluid exchange between the matrix and the micro-fractures.The shale gas adsorption, desorption, diffusion, gas slippage effect, fracture stress sensitivity, and capillary imbibition have been considered. The shale gas production, pore pressure distribution and water saturation distribution in the reservoir have been simulated. The influences of hydraulic fracture geometry and nonorthogonal hydraulic fractures on gas production have been determined and discussed accordingly. The simulation results show that the daily gas production has an upward and downward trend due to the presence of a large amount of fracturingfluid in the reservoir around the hydraulic fracture. The smaller the angle between the hydraulic fracture and the wellbore, the faster the daily production of shale gas wells decreases, and the lower the cumulative production.Nonplanar fractures can increase the control volume of hydraulic fractures and improve the production of shale gas wells.
