The squeezing scenario in deep weak rock tunnels can hinder underground construction. However, due to the limitations of test technologies at hand, the real excavation stress path cannot be mimicked in the laboratory. Thus, the large deformation mechanism of deep weak rocks still remains unclear. For this,a true triaxial apparatus(TTA)to investigate the mechanical responses of deep weak rock under excavation stress paths in field and reveal the squeezing mechanism of deep tunnels is assembled and developed at Northeastern University,China. The apparatus can perform instantaneous unloading in s3 direction based on electromagnetism technology. In addition, uniform loading and deformation measurements can be carried out based on the proposed linked interlocking clamp and antifriction device, even if the sample has a strong dilatation deformation performance.Next,a bore trepanning is designed to capture noiseless acoustic emission(AE)signals for deep weak rock at a low threshold. Finally, two tests were are conducted using this instrument to preliminarily understand the failure and deformation features of deep weak rock based on fractured marble. The results show that the complete stressestrain curves of fractured marble have the characteristics of low strengths and large deformations, and the larger deformation and the more serious failure occur when the fractured marble enters the post-peak state after excavation. The results show that the developed apparatus is likely to be applicable for deep weak rock engineering. 展开更多

This study introduces a test system for microwave-induced fracturing of hard rocks under true triaxial stress. The test system comprises a true triaxial stress loading system,an open-ended microwaveinduced fracturing system,a data acquisition system,an acoustic emission(AE)monitoring system, and an auxiliary specimen loading system.Microwave-induced surface and borehole fracturing tests under true triaxial stress were fulfilled for the first time, which overcomes the problem of microwave leakage in the coupling loading of true triaxial stress and microwave.By developing the dynamic monitoring system, the thermal response and fracture evolution were obtained during microwave irradiation. The monitoring system includes the infrared thermometry technique for monitoring rock surface temperature, the distributed optic fiber sensing technique for monitoring temperature in borehole in rock, the AE technique and two-dimensional digital speckle correlation technique for monitoring the evolution of thermal damage and the rock fracturing process. To validate the advantages of the test system and investigate the characteristics of microwave-induced fracturing of hard rocks, the study demonstrates the experimental methods and results for microwave-induced surface and borehole fracturing under true triaxial stress. The results show that thermal cracking presented intermittent characteristics(calm eactiveecalm)during microwave-induced surface and borehole fracturing of basalt. In addition, true triaxial stress can inhibit the development and distribution of thermal cracks during microwave-induced surface fracturing. When microwave-induced borehole fracturing occurs,it promotes the distribution of thermal cracks in rock, but inhibits the width of cracks. The results also prove the reliability of the test system. 展开更多

This investigation aims to explore the effects of stress conditions and rock cutting rates on hard rock fragmentation through indentation tests on a newly designed triaxial testing apparatus. This apparatus was designed to realize a triaxial loading and indentation test of cylindrical specimens using inserted tooth cutter. The boreability and crushing efficiency of granite rock was investigated by analyzing the change rules of the thrusting force, penetration depth, characteristics of chippings and failure patterns.Several quantitative indexes were used to evaluate rock boreability in this investigation. The granite rock samples all had a chiselled pit and a crushed rock core.Under initial stress conditions, only flat-shape chippings were stripped from the rock surface when the thrusting force reached 20 kN.The rock cutting special energy had a close correlation with the initial stress conditions and inserted tooth shape. Moreover,a thrusting force prediction model was proposed in this paper. The contribution of this study is that for the first time the influence mechanism of the initial triaxial stress conditions on rock fragmentation is investigated using an inserted tooth and the newly designed testing apparatus. This study has a crucial importance for practical underground hard rock crushing in geoengineering. 展开更多

A true triaxial apparatus which is composed of three units was presented. The apparatus allows for investigations on deformation and seepage behaviors of a single rock fracture subjected to lateral stress and normal stress. The first unit has three jacks which can apply loads independently in three orthogonal directions. The second unit is used to supply water inflow, control seepage pressure and measure flow velocity in real time. The third unit is for measuring the normal deformation of rock fractures. Some tests for investigating the normal deformation and seepage behaviors of rock fractures subjected to normal and lateral loads on hard granite specimens with an artificial persistent fracture, were introduced. The results show that both the normal deformation and the hydraulic conductivity are influenced not only by the normal stress but also by the lateral stress. It is also shown that the aperture and the hydraulic conductivity decrease with the increasing normal stress but increase with the increasing lateral stress and both the aperture and the hydraulic conductivity obey exponential relationships with the normal stress and the lateral stress. 展开更多

The development of a miniature triaxial apparatus is presented. In conjunction with an X-ray microtomography(termed as X-ray fiCT hereafter)facility and advanced image processing techniques, this apparatus can be used for in situ investigation of the micro-scale mechanical behavior of granular soils under shear. The apparatus allows for triaxial testing of a miniature dry sample with a size of 8 mm x 16 mm(diameter x height). In situ triaxial testing of a 0.4-0.8 mm Leighton Buzzard sand(LBS)under a constant confining pressure of 500 kPa is presented. The evolutions of local porosities(i.e.,the porosities of regions associated with individual particles),particle kinematics(i.e.,particle translation and particle rotation)of the sample during the shear are quantitatively studied using image processing and analysis techniques.Meanwhile,a novel method is presented to quantify the volumetric strain distribution of the sample based on the results of local porosities and particle tracking. It is found that the sample, with nearly homogenous initial local porosities, starts to exhibit obvious inhomogeneity of local porosities and localization of particle kinematics and volumetric strain around the peak of deviatoric stress. In the post-peak shear stage, large local porosities and volumetric dilation mainly occur in a localized band. The developed triaxial apparatus,in its combined use of X-ray|iCT imaging techniques,is a powerful tool to investigate the micro-scale mechanical behavior of granular soils. 展开更多

The cutting slopes in soft rock of redbed appeared in Yichang-Badong highway often suffer from the instability along weak intercalations, so the creep behaviors of weak intercalated soils are crucially important for the stability of cutting slopes. Because the deformation of weak intercalated soils is significantly affected by water content due to the strong water sensitivity, it is necessary to study the influence of matric suction on the creep behaviors of weak intercalated soils. In order to find out the unsaturated creep characters of weak intercalated soils, a GDS unsaturated triaxial apparatus was used. Then the triaxial creep experiments on weak intercalated soil samples under varying matric suction were conducted to obtain the unsaturated creep curves. The results show that the weak intercalated soils have obvious creep behaviors, and the creep strain is in nonlinear relationship with stress and time. When the matric suction is constant, a larger deviator stress will lead to a larger creep strain; When the deviator stress is constant, a smaller matric suction will lead to a larger creep strain. Based on the Mesri creep model, an improved creep model for weak intercalated soils under varying matric suction was established, in which the relationship of stress-strain was expressed with a hyperbolic function, and the relationship of strain-time was expressed with power functions in stages. Then an unsaturated creep model including stress-matric suction-strain-time for weak intercalated soils was established based on the power function relationship between matric suction and Ed(a parameter of the improved creep model). The comparison of the calculated values of creep model and the experimental values shows that the creep behaviors of weak intercalated soils can be predicted by the unsaturated creep model by and large. 展开更多

By using GDS dynamic hollow cylinder torsional apparatus, a series of cyclic torsional triaxial tests under complex initial consolidation condition are performed on Nanjing saturated fine sand. The effects of the initial principal stress direction αo, the initial ratio of deviatoric stress η0, the initial average effective principal stress Po and the initial intermediate principal stress parameter b0 on the threshold shear strain γt of Nanjing saturated fine sand are then systematically investigated. The results show that γt increases as η0,p0 and b0 increase respectively, while the other three parameters remain constant. ao has a great influence on γt, which is reduced when ao increases from 0° to 45°and increased when α0 increases from 45° to 90°. The effect of α0 on γt, plays a leading role and the effect of η0 will weaken when ao is approximately 45°. 展开更多

A new triaxial testing system that could control suction in wetting-induced collapsible tests was success-fully developed to study the suction effects on wetting-induced collapsible deformation. The pedestal of the triaxial cell was made up of two parts, and the equipment not only could control suction but also could make water accessible to soil.A pressure/volume-controlled equip-ment was combined with the triaxial system to measure the water volume absorbed by samples accurately and to add pressure on water to filtrate into the sample. The apparatus could measure volume change precisely and keep the deviator stress unvaried,as well as measure the volume of water filtrating into the samples exactly.A triaxial collapsible testing procedure was described using the new apparatus for undisturbed collapsible loess with controlled suction.Furthermore,a series of double triaxial collapsible tests were conducted under different suctions and the same net cell pressure, and tests under different net cell pressures and the same suction were also done.It was indicated that the collapsible deformation increased with the increasing suction, and the effect of the net cell pressure on collapsible deformation was remarkable. The new triaxial apparatus was a useful facility to study the collapsible behavior of loess. 展开更多
