Understanding the differences in mechanical properties and damage characteristics of granitoid under high temperatures is crucial for exploring deep geothermal resources. This study analyzes the evolution of the acoustic emission(AE)characteristics and mechanical parameters of granodiorite and granite after heating and water cooling by uniaxial compression and variable-angle shear tests under different temperature gradients. We identify their changes in mesostructure and mineral composition with electron probe microanalysis and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that these two hot dry rocks have similar diagenetic minerals and microstructure, but show significantly different mechanical and acoustic characteristics, and even opposing evolution trends in a certain temperature range. At the temperatures ranging from 100℃to 500℃,the compressive and shear mechanical properties of granodiorite switch repeatedly between weakening and strengthening, and those of granite show a continuous weakening trend. At 600℃,both rocks exhibit a deterioration of mechanical properties. The damage mode of granite is characterized by initiating at low stress, exponential evolutionary activity, and intensified energy release. In contrast, granodiorite exhibits the characteristics of initiating at high stress, volatile evolutionary activity, and intermittent energy release, due to its more stable microstructure and fewer thermal defects compared to granite. As the temperature increases, the initiation and propagation of secondary cracks in granodiorite are suppressed to a certain extent, and the seismicity and brittleness are enhanced. The subtle differences in grain size, microscopic heterogeneity, and mineral composition of the two hot dry rocks determine the different acoustic-mechanical characteristics under heating and cooling, and the evolution trends with temperature. These findings are of great significance for the scientific and efficient construction of rock mass engineering by rationally utilizing different rock strata properties. 展开更多

In this study, the Mg-3Zn-0.5Zr-χNd(χ=0,0.6)alloys were subjected to final rolling treatment with large deformation of 50%.The impact of annealing temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. The rolled Mg-3Zn-0.5Zr-0.6Nd alloy exhibited an ultimate tensile strength of 386 MPa,a yield strength of 361 MPa,and an elongation of 7.1%.Annealing at different temperatures resulted in reduced strength and obviously increased elongation for both alloys.Optimal mechanical properties for the Mg-3Zn-0.5Zr-0.6Nd alloy were achieved after annealing at 200℃,with an ultimate tensile strength of 287 MPa,a yield strength of 235 MPa,and an elongation of 26.1%.The numerous deformed microstructures, twins, and precipitated phases in the rolled alloy could impede the deformation at room temperature and increase the work hardening rate. After annealing,a decrease in the work hardening effect and an increase in the dynamic recovery effect were obtained due to the formation of fine equiaxed grains, and the increased volume fraction of precipitated phases, which significantly improved the elongation of the alloy.Additionally, the addition of Nd element could enhance the annealing recrystallization rate, reduce the Schmid factor difference between basal and prismatic slip systems, facilitate multi-system slip initiation and improve the alloy plasticity. 展开更多

Static mechanical experiments were carried out on granite after and under different temperatures using an electro-hydraulic and servo-controlled material testing machine with a heating device. Variations in obvious form, stress-strain curve, peak strength, peak strain and elastic modulus with temperature were analyzed and the essence of rock failure modes was explored. The results indicate that, compared with granite after the high temperature treatment, the brittle-ductile transition critical temperature is lower, the densification stage is longer, the elastic modulus is smaller and the damage is larger under high temperature. In addition, the peak stress is lower and the peak strain is greater, but both of them change more obviously with the increase of temperature compared with that of granite after the high temperature treatment. Furthermore, the failure modes of granite after the high temperature treatment and under high temperature show a remarkable difference. Below 100 ℃, the failure modes of granite under both conditions are the same, presenting splitting failure. However, after 100 ℃, the failure modes of granite after the high temperature treatment and under high temperature present splitting failure and shear failure, respectively. 展开更多

An as-solution treated Mg-6Gd-1Y-0.4Zr alloy was processed by low temperature thermo-mechanical treatments (LT-TMT), including cold tension with various strains followed by aging at 200 °C to peak hardness. The results show that the precipitation kinetics of the alloy experienced LT-TMT is greatly accelerated and the aging time to peak hardness is greatly decreased with increasing tensile strain. The tensile yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation at room temperature of the alloy after cold tension with strain of 10% and peak aging at 200 °C are 251 MPa, 296 MPa and 8%, respectively, which are superior to the commercial heat-resistant WE54 alloy, although the latter has a higher rare earth element content. 展开更多

In order to explore the effect of artificial accelerated aging temperature on the performance of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites,we used artificial seawater as the aging medium, designed the aging environment of seawater at different temperatures under normal pressure, and studied the aging behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The infrared spectroscopy results show that, with the increase of aging temperature, the degree of hydrolysis of the composite is greater. At the same time, after 250 days of aging of artificial seawater at regular temperature,40 and 60 ℃,the moisture absorption rates of composite materials were 0.45%,0.63%,and 1.05%,and the retention rates of interlaminar shear strength were 91%,78%,and 62%,respectively.It is shown that the temperature of the aging environment has a significant impact on the hygroscopic behavior and mechanical properties of the composite, that is,the higher the temperature, the faster the moisture absorption of the composite, and the faster the decay of the mechanical properties of the composite. 展开更多

An advanced rheomoulder, which is a device in the integration of melting metal, storage, slurry preparation, transportation and injection forming, was introduced and used to manufacture rheomoulding AZ91 D alloy.Effects of pouring temperature and cylinder temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of rheomoulding AZ91 D alloy were investigated. The results show that the process can obtain such rheomoulding AZ91 D in which primary α-Mg particles are fine, spherical and uniformly distributed in the matrix. With the decrease of pouring temperature, the morphology of primary α-Mg particles changes from coarse rosette-like to fine spherical shape gradually. As the cylinder temperature decreases, the average size of primary α-Mg particles decreases firstly and then substantially maintains stable while the sphericity and solid fraction increase continuously. Also, decreasing pouring temperature or cylinder temperature properly contributes to improving mechanical properties of rheomoulding AZ91 D for the refinement of α-Mg particles and the decrease of porosity fraction.Furthermore, rheomoulding AZ91 D performs much better than thixomoulding,rheo-diecasting and high pressure die-casting(HPDC) in terms of mechanical properties.Compared with HPDC,the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are increased by 27.8%,15.7% and 121%,respectively. 展开更多

Influence of multi-cycle cryogenic treatment and tensile temperature on microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of as-extruded Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.5Zr magnesium alloy was investigated. The results show that there have no significant changes in tensile properties of the tested alloy after 10 d in liquid nitrogen immersion or 10 cycles of high-low temperature treatment at all test temperatures. The room temperature ultimate tensile strength increases from 398 MPa to 417 MPa after 20 cycles of high-low temperature treatments. Compared with the room temperature, the tested alloys exhibit higher tensile properties at low temperatures. At -196 °C, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the as-extruded-T5 Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy are 349 MPa and 506 MPa, respectively, increasing by about 18% and 27%, respectively. The transgranular cleavage fracture mechanism is observed at room temperature, while at low temperatures both ductile fracture and cleavage fracture behaviors coexist. 展开更多

A new high throughput heat-treatment method with a continuous temperature gradient between 600 and 700 ?C was utilized on the Ti-5553 alloy(Ti-5 Al-5 Mo-5 V-3 Cr, mass fraction, %). The temperature gradient was induced by the variation of the axial section of sample, which was heated by the direct current. The variation of continuous cooling rates on the treated sample was realized by using the end quenching method. The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties under different heat treatment conditions were evaluated. The results show that the pseudo-spinodal decomposition of the alloy occurs at(617±1) ?C, and the size of the precipitated α phase is around 300 nm. Moreover, the highest microhardness is obtained after the heat treatment at the pseudo-spinodal decomposition temperature for 4 h. These indicate that the high throughput method is efficient and fast to determine the phase transformation temperature and corresponding microstructural evolution of alloys. 展开更多

Brittle fracture occurs frequently in rails and thermite welded joints, which intimidates the security and reliability of railway ser- vice. Railways in cold regions, such as Qinghai-Tibet Railway, make the problem of brittle fi'acture in rails even worse. A series of tests such as uniaxial tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, and three-point bending tests were carried out at low temperature to investigate the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of U71Mn and U75V rail steels and their thermite welds. Fracture micromechanisms were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the fracture surfaces of the tested specimens. The ductility indices (percentage elongation aider frac- ture and percentage reduction of area) and the toughness indices (Charpy impact energy Ak and plane-strain fracture toughness Kic) of the two kinds of rail steels and the corresponding thermite welds all decrease as the temperature decreases. The thermite welds are more critical to fracture than the rail steel base metals, as indicated by a higher yield-to-ultimate ratio and a much lower Charpy impact energy. U71Mn rail steel is relatively higher in toughness than U75V, as demonstrated by larger Ak and Klc values. Therefore, U71Mn rail steel and the corresponding thermite weld are recommended in railway construction and maintenance in cold regions. 展开更多

In addition, the strain rate softening effect enhances with an increase in deformation temperature. After deformation, the microstructures were studied by optical microscopy (OM). The results show that low temperature aging after promotive solution treatment can increase elongation without the loss of strength for the studied alloys. The optimum aging treatment (T6) for alloy 1 and alloy 2 is 100℃/80h and 100℃/48h, respectively. Compared with other heat treatment alloys, alloy 1 and alloy 2 show super-high tensile strength up to 753MPa and 788MPa, remaining 9.3% and 9.7% elongation under T6 condition, respectively. During aging, trace addition of Ag enhances the formations of GP zone and metastable phase, and stabilizes GP zone and metastable phase to a higher temperature. Trace addition of Ag prolongs the aging time of reaching the peak strength and delays over-aging condition of the alloy. However, trace addition of Ag promotes the formation of coarse constituent in the alloy and consumes hardening alloying elements of Zn and Mg. Moreover, the addition of the transition element Zr in 7000 series super-high alloy forms incoherent Al3Zr dispersoid which can serve as nucleation sites for nonuniform precipitation of η phase during aging process. The higher the aging temperature, the greater the tendency for nonuniform precipitation of η phase. 展开更多

In order to get the dynamic mechanical properties of deep rock mass suffered both high temperature and high pressure, impact loading experiments on granite subjected to temperature and axial pressure were carried out. Furthermore, the internalstructure characteristics of granite under different temperatures were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the longitudinal wave velocity assumes a downward trend which shows a rapid drop before falling slowly as the temperature increases. The uniaxial compressive strength of the specimen decreases significantly at temperatures of 25?100 °C compared to that at temperatures of 100?300 °C. The peak strain rises rapidly before the dividing point of 100 °C, but increases slowly after the dividing point. The internal structure of the rock changes substantially as the temperature increases, such as the extension and transfixion of primary and newborn cracks. In addition, the thermal damage under axial pressure is greater than that described by the longitudinal wave velocity and the phenomenon shows obviously when the temperature increases. 展开更多

Creep age forming techniques have been widely used in aerospace industries. In this study, we investigated the effect of aging temperature(143 °C-163 °C) on the creep behavior of Al-Li-S4 aluminum alloy and their mechanical properties at room temperature. The mechanical properties were tested by tensile testing, and the microstructural evolution at different aging temperatures was examined by transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the creep strains and the room-temperature mechanical properties after creep aging increase with the aging temperature. As the aging temperature increases, the creep strain increases from 0.018% at 143 °C to 0.058% at 153 °C, and then to 0.094% at 163 °C. Within 25 h aging, the number of creep steps increases and the duration time of the same steps is shortened with the growth of aging temperatures. Therefore, the increase in aging temperatures accelerates the progress of the entire creep. Two main strengthening precipitates θ′(Al2 Cu) and T1(Al2 Cu Li) phases were characterized. This work indicates that the creep strain and mechanical properties of Al-Li-S4 alloys can be improved by controlling aging temperatures. 展开更多

Designing and developing the Mg alloys with low cost and high performance is of the great significance.Novel Mg-1Bi-xMn(x=0,1and 2 wt.%)extruded alloys,in this work, were fabricated at different extrusion temperatures(220,250 and 300℃).The effects of extrusion temperature and Mn addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of extruded alloys at room temperature were investigated. The results showed that decreasing the extrusion temperature could refine the average grain size, weaken the basal fiber texture intensity and improve the microstructural homogeneity of extruded alloys. When the Mn element was added to the Mg-1Bi alloy, the average grain size further reduced.Simultaneously, the number fraction of low angle grain boundaries(LAGBs)increased, along with the occurrence of regions without dynamic recrystallization(unDRX).The combined effects of grain refinement and coarse unDRXed structure made the textures of the extruded Mg-1Bi-xMn alloys never obviously change.Besides few large size un-dissolved second phases, fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) and α-Mn phases were precipitated in the extruded Mg-1Bi-xMn alloys and partial nano-scaleα-Mn particles pined at grain boundaries(GBs)to effectively impede the migration of GBs for grain refinement.Microstructural variations determined the extruded Mg-1Bi-2Mn alloy to exhibit the highest yield strength of~319.2 MPa with the appropriate elongation-to-failure of~13%at the extrusion temperature of 220℃,and they enabled the extruded Mg-1Bi-1Mn alloy to show the highest elongation-to-failure of~26%without the obvious loss of yield strength of~252.1 MPa. 展开更多

A series of experiments were carried out to study the influence of low temperature plasma nitriding on the mechanical properties of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. Plasma nitriding experiments were carried out for 15 h at 350℃ by means of DC- pulsed plasma in 25%N2+ 75%H2 atmosphere. The microstructure, phase composition, and residual stresses profiles of the nitrided layers were determined by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The microhardness profiles of the nitridied surfaces were also studied. The fatigue life, sliding wear, and erosion wear loss of the untreated specimens and plasma nitriding specimens were determined on the basis of a rotating bending fatigue tester, a ball-on-disc wear tester, and a solid particle erosion tester. The results show that the 350℃ nitrided surface is dominated by c-Fe3N and ON, which is supersaturated nitrogen solid solution. They have high hardness and chemical stabilities. So the low temperature plasma nitriding not only increases the surface hardness values but also improves the wear and erosion resistance. In addition, the fatigue limit of AISI 420 steel can also be improved by plasma nitriding at 350℃ because plasma nitriding produces residual compressive stress inside the modified layer. 展开更多
