In this paper,a new compact ultrawideband(UWB)circularly polarized(CP)antenna array for vehicular communications is proposed.The antenna array consists of a 2×2 sequentially rotated T-shaped cross dipole,four parasitic elements,and a feeding network.By loading the T-shaped cross dipoles with parasitic rectangular elements with cut corners,the bandwidth can be expanded.On this basis,the radiation pattern can be improved by the topology with sequential rotation of four T-shaped cross-dipole antennas,and the axial ratio(AR)bandwidth of the antenna also can be further enhanced.In addition,due to the special topology that the vertical arms of all Tshaped cross dipoles are all oriented toward the center of the antenna array,the gain of proposed antenna is improved while the size of the antenna is almost the same as the traditional cross dipole.Simulated and measured results show that the proposed antenna has good CP characteristics,an impedance bandwidth for S11<-10 d B of about 106.1%(3.26:1,1.57-5.12 GHz)and the 3-d B AR bandwidth of about 104.1%(3.17:1,1.57-4.98 GHz),a wide 3-d B gain bandwidth of 73.3%as well as the peak gain of 8.6 d Bic at 3.5 GHz.The overall size of antenna is 0.56λ×0.56λ×0.12λ(λrefers to the wavelength of the lowest operating frequency in free space).The good performance of this compact UWB CP antenna array is promising for applications in vehicular communications. 展开更多

The jeans substrate is sand... This research presents an ultra-wideband (UWB) textile antenna designfor body-centric applications. The antenna is printed on a 1 mm thick denim substrate with a 1.7 relative permittivity. The jeans substrate is sandwiched between apartial ground plane and a radiating patch with a Q-shaped slot. The slotted radiating patch is placed above the substrate and measures 27.8 mm × 23.8 mm. In freespace, the antenna covers the ultra-wideband spectrum designated by the FederalCommunication Commission (FCC). Various parameters of the antenna designwere changed for further performance evaluation. Depending on the operating frequency, the antenna's realized gain varied from 2.7 to 5 dB. The antenna achievedhigh radiation efficiency with an omnidirectional radiation pattern. A parametricstudy was performed in research on varying antenna substrates and other components of the antenna. The three outermost layers of the human body are used tomodel a human phantom for on-body simulation. After that, the antenna wasplaced at five different distances from the phantom. The findings demonstrate thatat close distances to the phantom, the antenna's gain and efficiency at lower frequencies are reduced. The antenna's radiation efficiency and gain were muchhigher at higher frequencies for distances greater than 6 mm. Compared to freespace, the antenna's radiation pattern was more omnidirectional, especially athigher frequencies. This antenna is novel, compact and has an ultra wide bandwidth, a maximum of 94.60% radiation efficiency and a 5 dBi gain that will makeit a good candidate for body-centric communications. 展开更多

In this paper,the feasibility and performance of millimeter wave(mm Wave)60 GHz ultra-wide band(UWB)systems for gigabit machine-to-machine(M2M)communications are analyzed.Specifically,based on specifications,channel measurements and models for both line-of-sight(LOS)and non-LOS(NLOS)scenarios,60 GHz propagation mechanisms are summarized,and 60 GHz UWB link budget and performance are analyzed.Tests are performed for determining ranges and antenna configurations.Results show that gigabit capacity can be achieved with omni-directional antennas configuration at the transceiver,especially in LOS conditions.When the LOS path is blocked by a moving person or by radiowave propagation in the NLOS situation,omni-directional and directional antennas configuration at the transceiver is required,especially for a larger range between machines in office rooms.Therefore,it is essential to keep a clear LOS path in M2M applications like gigabit data transfer.The goal of this work is to provide useful information for standardizations and design of 60 GHz UWB systems. 展开更多

Design of ultra-wideband antennas is challenging in the stringent requirements that are often conflicting to achieve a wide impedance bandwidth while maintaining high radiation efficiency, uniform gain and compact size. A Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna system can enhance the overall antenna performance but at having to overcome new challenges such as reducing the mutual coupling and the correlation between the elements. A printed circular disc compact planar antenna is selected in this work due to its UWB performance and compact size for the MIMO antenna system. A parametric analysis is carried out to achieve an optimal design. The system developed consists of two elements with an overall size of 59 × 27 mm. The designed antenna system operates over the whole of the UWB bandwidth from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz with radiation efficiency up to 85% and reflection coefficients less that ?10 dB. The envelope correlation is less than ?60 dB throughout the UWB band while the diversity gain approaches 10 throughout the entire UWB bandwidth and Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC) between the antenna elements is less ?11 dB. Thus the proposed MIMO antenna outperforms similar antenna systems reported in the literature. 展开更多

High-precision localization technology is attracting widespread attention in harsh indoor environments.In this paper,we present a fingerprint localization and tracking system to estimate the locations of the tag based on a deep belief network(DBN).In this system,we propose using coefficients as fingerprints to combine the ultra-wideband(UWB)and inertial measurement unit(IMU)estimation linearly,termed as a HUID system.In particular,the fingerprints are trained by a DBN and estimated by a radial basis function(RBF).However,UWB-based estimation via a trilateral method is severely affected by the non-line-of-sight(NLoS)problem,which limits the localization precision.To tackle this problem,we adopt the random forest classifier to identify line-of-sight(LoS)and NLoS conditions.Then,we adopt the random forest regressor to mitigate ranging errors based on the identification results for improving UWB localization precision.The experimental results show that the mean square error(MSE)of the localization error for the proposed HUID system reduces by 12.96%,50.16%,and 64.92%compared with that of the existing extended Kalman filter(EKF),single UWB,and single IMU estimation methods,respectively. 展开更多

The antenna,as the component of receiving and sending signals in the front end of the wireless communication system,plays an important role in the communication quality,and is often the main obstacle to the development of the miniaturization of the wireless communication system.The microstrip antenna is composed of a metal radiation patch which can be pasted on the dielectric substrate.The choice of the shape of the metal patch can be arbitrary.The conventional shape is usually chosen as the metal patch to simplify the analysis and prediction of its performance.The dielectric constant of the microstrip antenna substrate is relatively low in order to enhance the field intensity of the edge radiation field.However,the dielectric constant of the substrate needs to be greater than 5 in order to meet the needs of other performance of the microstrip antenna,so that the radiation edge effect cannot be enhanced,resulting in the greater contradictions. 展开更多

Metamaterials(MTM)can enhance the properties of microwaves and also exceed some limitations of devices used in technical practice.Note that the antenna is the element for realizing a microwave imaging(MWI)system since it is where signal transmission and absorption occur.Ultra-Wideband(UWB)antenna superstrates with MTM elements to ensure the signal transmitted from the antenna reaches the tumor and is absorbed by the same antenna.The lack of conventional head imaging techniques,for instance,Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)and Computerized Tomography(CT)-scan,has been demonstrated in the paper focusing on the point of failure of these techniques for prompt diagnosis and portable systems.Furthermore,the importance ofMWIhas been addressed elaborately to portray its effectiveness and aptness for a primary tumor diagnosis.Other than that,MTM element designs have been discussed thoroughly based on their performances towards the contributions to the better image resolution of MWI with detailed reasonings.This paper proposes the novel design of a Zeroindex Split RingResonator(SRR)MTMelement superstrate with a UWB antenna implemented in MWI systems for detecting tumor.The novel design of the MTM enables the realization of a high gain of a superstrate UWB antenna with the highest gain of 5.70 dB.Besides that,the MTM imitates the conduct of the zeroreflection phase on the resonance frequency,which does not exist.An antenna with an MTM unit is of a 7×4 and 10×5 Zero-index SRR MTM element that acts as a superstrate plane to the antenna.Apart from that,Rogers(RT5880)substrate material is employed to fabricate the designed MTM unit cell,with the following characteristics:0.51mm thickness,the loss tangent of 0.02,as well as the relative permittivity of 2.2,with Computer Simulation Technology(CST)performing the simulation and design.Both MTM unit cells of 7×4 and 10×5 attained 0°with respect to the reflection phase at the 2.70 GHz frequency band.The first design,MTM Antenna Design 1,consists of a 7×4 MTM unit cell that observed a rise of 5.70 dB with a return loss(S11)−20.007 dB at 2.70 GHz frequency.The second design,MTM Antenna Design 2,consists of 10×5 MTM unit cells that recorded a gain of 5.66 dB,having the return loss(S11)−19.734 dB at 2.70 GHz frequency.Comparing these two MTM elements superstrates with the antenna,one can notice that the 7×4 MTM element shape has a low number of the unit cell with high gain and is a better choice than the 10×5 MTM element in realizing MTM element superstrates antenna for MWI. 展开更多

The antenna plays an essential role in the medical industry.The short-range 5th Generation(5G)communication can be used for seamless transmission,reception,patient monitoring,sensing and measuring various processes at high speeds.A passive Ultra Wide Band(UWB)antenna,used as a sensor in the mea-surement of Prothrombin Time(PT)i.e.,blood clot is being proposed.The inves-tigated micro-strip patch UWB antenna operating in the frequency range of 3.1 to 10.6 GHz consists of a circular patch with a diamond-shaped slot made of jeans substrate material with good sensing properties is accomplished by adjusting the copper thickness of the patch.Due to the turbidity in blood plasma,PT measure-ment is the repetitive approach to get accurate value.In order to solve this issue,an antenna is designed,fabricated and analysed to obtain the accurate PT mea-surements from blood plasma.The blood clotting is observed by electromagnetic emitted voltage converted into the frequency range of 5 to 10 GHz and voltage range of 0.66 to 0.87 mV.The circular UWB antenna is constructed employing jean’s substrate with a partial ground plane to improve the S-parameter,gain,bandwidth and performance characteristics.The proposed antenna with Specific Absorption Rate(SAR)value within the acceptable range can be used as a wear-able device in the human body,leveraging 5G technology.This antenna is well suited for various other applications like wireless sensors,wearable devices and short-range communication applications. 展开更多

Ultra-wideband(UWB)technology is a prospective technology for high-rate transmission and accurate localization in the future communication systems.State-of-art channel modeling approaches usually divide the UWB channel into several sub-band channels and model them independently.By considering frequency-dependent channel parameters,a novel analytical UWB channel model with continuous frequency response is proposed.The composite effect of all frequency components within the UWB channel on the channel impulse response(CIR)of delay domain is derived based on the continuous channel transfer function(CTF)of frequency domain.On this basis,a closed-form simulation model for UWB channels and geometry-based parameter calculation method are developed,which can guarantee the continuity of channel characteristics on the frequency domain and greatly reduce the simulation complexity.Finally,the proposed method is applied to generate UWB channel with 2 GHz bandwidth at sub-6GHz and millimeter wave(mmWave)bands,respectively.The channel measurements are also carried out to validate the proposed method.The simulated CIR and power gain are shown to be in good agreement with the measurement data.Moreover,the comparison results of power gain and Doppler power spectral density(DPSD)show that the proposed UWB channel model Received:Apr.23,2022 Revised:Jun.09,2022 Editor:Wei Fan achieves a good balance between the simulation accuracy and efficiency. 展开更多

To realize high-resolution digital beamforming(DBF)of ultra-wideband(UWB) signals, we propose a DBF method based on Carath ′eodory representation for delay compensation and array extrapolation. Delay compensation by Carath ′eodory representation could achieve high interpolation accuracy while using the single channel sampling technique. Array extrapolation by Carath ′eodory representation reformulates and extends each snapshot, consequently extends the aperture of the original uniform linear array(ULA) by several times and provides a better realtime performance than the existing aperture extrapolation utilizing vector extrapolation based on the two dimensional autoregressive(2-D AR) model. The UWB linear frequency modulated(LFM) signal is used for simulation analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is featured by a much higher spatial resolution than traditional DBF methods and lower sidelobes than using Lagrange fractional filters. 展开更多

To suppress the interference in the ultra-wideband (AI-UWB) system is a challenging problem. An anti-interference multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing ultra-wideband (AI-UWB) system, based on spreading and interleaving is addressed. It will exploit the frequency diversity across the subcarriers and provide the robustness to narrow-band interference, by spreading the coded bit streams within each sub-band and interleaving across all sub-bands. Simulating results show that the spreading and interleaving provide about 5 dB to 10 dB advantages over the conventional multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing ultra-wideband system in signal-to-interference ratio. Spreading and interleaving is an effective cure for enhancing the robustness to narrowband interference. 展开更多

A single-stage ring resonator capable of introducing six modes within the ultra-wideband(UWB)passband is presented.The sextuple-mode resonator consists of three rings and three sets of stepped-impedance open stubs.Based on this sextuple-mode resonator,a UWB filter fed by the interdigital-coupling line(ICL)is designed.And we propose a two-round interpolation method to obtain the filter's initial dimensions.The designed filter is fabricated on a double-sided YBCO/MgO/YBCO high-temperature superconducting(HTS)thin film for demonstration.The experimental results show that this UWB filter produces eight resonances in the passband eventually,which effectively improves the in-band reflection and the band-edge steepness.Moreover,the upper stopband performance is enhanced due to the transmission zeros(TZs)generated by the stepped-impedance open stubs and the ICL structure.The measured good performance verifies the practicability of the two-round interpolation approach,which can also be extended to other odd-even-mode filter designs. 展开更多

On-off keying (OOK) is one of the modulation schemes for non-coherent impulse radio Ultra-wideband systems. In this paper, the utilization of the kurtosis detector (KD) and fourth power detector (FD) receivers for OOK signaling is introduced. We investigate the effect of integration interval and the optimum threshold on the performance of energy detector (ED), KD and FD receivers. The semi analytic expression of BER is obtained by using generalized extreme value distribution function for KD and FD receivers. From performance point of view, the simulation results show that FD receiver outperforms KD and ED receivers. In contrast, the sensitivity to the optimum threshold is greatly reduced in KD receiver compared to ED and FD receivers. 展开更多

The objective of this paper is to investigate a ultra-wideband (UWB) low noise amplifier (LNA) by utilizing a two-stage cascade circuit schematic associated with inductive-series peaking technique, which can improve the bandwidth in the 3-10 GHz microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC). The proposed UWB LNA amplifier was implemented with both co-planer waveguide (CPW) layout and 0.15-μm GaAs D-mode pHEMT technology. Based on those technologies, this proposed UWB LNA with a chip size of 1.5 mm x 1.4 mm, obtained a flatness gain 3-dB bandwidth of 4 - 8 GHz, the constant gain of 4 dB, noise figure lower than 5 dB, and the return loss better than –8.5 dB. Based on our experimental results, the low noise amplifier using the inductive-series peaking technique can obtain a wider bandwidth, low power consumption and high flatness of gain in the 3 - 10 GHz. Finally, the overall LNA characterization exhibits ultra-wide bandwidth and low noise characterization, which illustrates that the proposed UWB LNA has a compact size and favorable RF characteristics. This UWB LNA circuit demonstrated the high RF characterization and could provide for the low noise micro-wave circuit applications. 展开更多

This paper introduces a human gesture recognition algorithm using an impulse radio ultra-wide- band (IR-UWB) radar sensor. Human gesture recognition has been one of the hottest research topics for quite a long time. Many gesture recognition algorithms or systems using other sensors have been proposed such as using cameras, RFID tags and so on. Among which gesture recognition systems using cameras have been extensively studied in past years and widely used in practical. While it might show some deficiencies in some cases. For example, the users might not like to be filmed by cameras considering their privacies. Besides, it might not work well in very dark environments. While RFID tags could be inconvenient to many people and are likely to be lost. Our gesture recognition algorithm uses IR-UWB radar sensor which has pretty high resolution in ranging and adjustable gesture recognition range, meanwhile, does not have problems in privacy issues or darkness. In this paper, the gesture recognition algorithm is based on the moving direction and distance change of the human hand and the change of the frontal surface area of hand towards radar sensor. By combining these changes while doing gestures, the algorithm may recognize basically 6 kinds of hand gestures. The experimental results show that these gestures are of quite good performance. The performance analysis from experiments is also given. 展开更多

In this paper,a low cost,highly efficient and low profile monopole antenna for ultra-wideband(UWB)applications is presented.A new inverted triangular-shape structure possessing meander lines is designed to achieve a wideband response and high efficiency.To design the proposed structure,three steps are utilized to achieve an UWB response.The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is improved with changing meander lines parameters,miniaturization of the ground width and optimization of the feeding line.The measured and simulated frequency band ranges from 3.2 to 12 GHz,while the radiation patterns are measured at 4,5.3,6 and 8 GHz frequency bands.The overall volume of the proposed antenna is 26×25×1.6 mm^(3);whereas the FR4 material is used as a substrate with a relative permittivity and loss tangent of 4.3 and 0.025,correspondingly.The peak gain of 4 dB is achieved with a radiation efficiency of 80 to 98%for the entire wideband.Design modelling of proposed antenna is performed in ANSYS HFSS 13 software.A decent consistency between the simulated and measured results is accomplished which shows that the proposed antenna is a potential candidate for the UWB applications. 展开更多

A novel low-cost 4-element planar array antenna directly fed by a coaxial cable for Ultra-WideBand(UWB) application is presented. The proposed antenna consists of 2×2 bowtie elements and a simple 1:4 power divider feeding network. Compared to the basic bowtie element, the impedance bandwidth of the array antenna has a significant improvement that the low cut-off frequency is extended from 6 GHz of the bowtie element to 2 GHz. The measured results show that the proposed antenna has a large bandwidth of 2 GHz to 11 GHz for Voltage Standing Wave Ratio(VSWR)<2, and exhibits a bidirectional radiation pattern and a modest gain across the operating band and a peak gain of about 9 dBi at 11 GHz. 展开更多

Based on the research on time domain and frequency domain transmitted reference Impulse Radio Ultra-WideBand (IR-UWB) system, this paper studies the optimization design for code domain transmitted reference IR-UWB system, and proposes a modified code domain transmitted reference IR-UWB system. The Bit Error Rate (BER) expressions for the modified system model in the condition of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and multipath fading are deduced respectively. In addition, the performances of the modified system and the other three transmitted reference IR-UWB systems are simulated and compared. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the performance of the modified system is superior to the other three systems. 展开更多

This article introduces a novel,ultrawideband(UWB)planar monopole antenna printed on Roger RT/5880 substrate in a compact size for small Internet of Things(IoT)applications.The total electrical dimensions of the proposed compact UWB antenna are 0.19λo×0.215λo×0.0196λo with the overall physical sizes of 15 mm×17 mm×1.548 mm at the lower resonance frequency of 3.8 GHz.The planar monopole antenna is fed through the linearly tapered microstrip line on a partially structured ground plane to achieve optimum impedance matching for UWB operation.The proposed compact UWB antenna has an operation bandwidth of 9.53 GHz from 3.026 GHz up to 12.556 GHz at−10 dB return loss with a fractional bandwidth(FBW)of about 122%.The numerically computed and experimentally measured results agree well in between.A detailed time-domain analysis is additionally accomplished to verify the radiation efficiency of the proposed antenna design for the ultra-wideband signal propagation.The fabricated prototype of a compact UWB antenna exhibits an omnidirectional radiation pattern with the low peak measured gain required of 2.55 dBi at 10 GHz and promising radiation efficiency of 90%.The proposed compact planar antenna has technical potential to be utilized in UWB and IoT applications. 展开更多
