This paper proposes a distributed control method based on the differential flatness(DF) property of robot swarms. The swarm DF mapping is established for underactuated differentially flat dynamics, according to the control objective. The DF mapping refers to the fact that the system state and input of each robot can be derived algebraically from the flat outputs of the leaders and the cooperative errors and their finite order derivatives. Based on the proposed swarm DF mapping, a distributed controller is designed. The distributed implementation of swarm DF mapping is achieved through observer design. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a numerical simulation of quadrotor swarm synchronization. 展开更多

This paper investigates the adaptive fuzzy finite-time output-feedback fault-tolerant control (FTC) problemfor a class of nonlinear underactuated wheeled mobile robots (UWMRs) system with intermittent actuatorfaults. The UWMR system includes unknown nonlinear dynamics and immeasurable states. Fuzzy logic systems(FLSs) are utilized to work out immeasurable functions. Furthermore, with the support of the backsteppingcontrol technique and adaptive fuzzy state observer, a fuzzy adaptive finite-time output-feedback FTC scheme isdeveloped under the intermittent actuator faults. It is testifying the scheme can ensure the controlled nonlinearUWMRs is stable and the estimation errors are convergent. Finally, the comparison results and simulationvalidate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy adaptive finite-time FTC approach. 展开更多

A quadruped robot with four actuated hip joints and four passive highly compliant knee joints is used to demonstrate the potential of underactuation from two standpoints: learning locomotion and perception. First, we show that: (i) forward locomotion on flat ground can be learned rapidly (minutes of optimization time); (ii) a simulation study reveals that a passive knee configuration leads to faster, more stable, and more efficient locomotion than a variant of the robot with active knees; (iii) the robot is capable of learning turning gaits as well. The merits of underactuation (reduced controller complexity, weight, and energy consumption) are thus preserved without compromising the versatility of behavior. Direct optimization on the reduced space of active joints leads to effective learning of model-free controllers. Second, we find passive compliant joints with po- tentiometers to effectively complement inertial sensors in a velocity estimation task and to outperform inertial and pressure sensors in a terrain detection task. Encoders on passive compliant joints thus constitute a cheap and compact but powerful sensing device that gauges joint position and force/torque, and -- if mounted more distally than the last actuated joints in a legged robot -- it delivers valuable information about the interaction of the robot with the ground. 展开更多

The Robogymnast is a triple link underactuated pendulum that mimics a human gymnast hanging from a horizontal bar.In this paper, two multi-objective optimization methods are developed using invasive weed optimization(IWO). The first method is the weighted criteria method IWO(WCMIWO) and the second method is the fuzzy logic IWO hybrid(FLIWOH). The two optimization methods were used to investigate the optimum diagonal values for the Q matrix of the linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller that can balance the Robogymnast in an upright configuration. Two LQR controllers were first developed using the parameters obtained from the two optimization methods. The same process was then repeated, but this time with disturbance applied to the Robogymnast states to develop another set of two LQR controllers. The response of the controllers was then tested in different scenarios using simulation and their performance evaluated. The results show that all four controllers are able to balance the Robogymnast with varying accuracies. It has also been observed that the controllers trained with disturbance achieve faster settling time. 展开更多
