It concluded that SEA could be improved by the following recommendations: incorporating SEA in decision-making process, selecting experimental units for SEA trial run, and developing strategic evaluation tools and techniques. SEA can provide appropriate and up-to-date information on the impact of human activity on environment in the process of urbanization, and develop a plan of action targeting implementation of intervention for the rehabilitation and preservation of the ecological stability of a city. Therefore, SEA can be a supporting tool for decision-making toward achieving sustainable development.展开更多
Measuring and comparing sustainable development levels of cities,regions,and projects are an essential procedure in creating and maintaining sustainable urban futures.Introducing a new urban sustainable development as...Measuring and comparing sustainable development levels of cities,regions,and projects are an essential procedure in creating and maintaining sustainable urban futures.Introducing a new urban sustainable development assessment model:The Live and Work(LaW)City Model.As an indicator-based sustainable development indexing model,it aims to assist planners and policy makers in their decisionmaking procedures and development of cities by providing an integrated assessment framework.Several efforts were done to develop composite indicators,but it was concluded that most of them focused on environmental dimensions and neglected the overlapping of the other influential ones.The paper gives an overview of the nature and importance of composite indicators and how it can be structured and implemented precisely;overcoming its drawbacks,to gauge and rank the performance of cities across the demands of people,planet,and profit,as a way of achieving the LaW balance criteria.The methodology of the model is developed by following a set of logical steps such as weighing,normalization,and aggregation of individual indicators.From here,a functional form for aggregation was derived to compute the index.Furthermore,the structure of the model was illustrated in the form of a pie/radar chart.The visualized LaW city index has the communicative advantage of being easy to convey comparative levels of different values.The total values computed could be used to rank cities in a tabular format and gauge their comparable sustainable development performance accordingly.The model can also estimate the sustainable development outcomes of alternative development scenarios during different year’s intervals.This can be achieved by stacking up different model scenarios;making it a relatively simple exercise for both the general public and decision makers to comprehend.展开更多

The index system was designed and a careful case of a telecom operator and its subsidiaries was also studied. The design elements and assessment requirements of the index were also presented clearly. Urban sustainability assessment is an effective method for objectively presenting the current state of sustainable urban development and diagnosing sustainability-related issues.As the global community intensifies its...Urban sustainability assessment is an effective method for objectively presenting the current state of sustainable urban development and diagnosing sustainability-related issues.As the global community intensifies its efforts to implement the sustainable development goals(SDGs),the demand for assessing progress in urban sustainable development has increased.This has led to the emergence of numerous indicator systems with varying scales and themes published by different entities.Cities participating in these evaluations often encounter difficulties in matching indicators or the absence of certain indicators.In this context,urban decision makers and planners urgently need to identify substitute indicators that can express the semantic meaning of the original indicators and consider the availability of indicators for participating cities.Hence,this study explores the relationships of substitution between indicators and constructs a collection of substitute indicators to serve as a reference for sustainable urban development assessment.Specifically,building on a review of international and Chinese indicators related to urban sustainability assessment,this study employs natural semantic analysis methods based on the Word2Vec model and cosine similarity algorithm to calculate the similarity between indicators related to sustainable urban development.The results show that the Skip-gram algorithm with a word vector dimensionality of 600 has the best performance in terms of calculating the similarity between sustainable urban development assessment indicators.The findings provide valuable insights into selecting substitute indicators for future sustainable urban development assessment,particularly in China.展开更多
A proper infrastructure assessment in the contemporary engineering world has become very crucial due to the palpable resources challenges. Therefore, from the design, construction, operation and maintenance stages of ...A proper infrastructure assessment in the contemporary engineering world has become very crucial due to the palpable resources challenges. Therefore, from the design, construction, operation and maintenance stages of the built infrastructural systems; cognizance must be taken of the associated factors and their significance. In considering these indices, the experts will save lots of resources wastage thereby integrating new technologies into the full life cycle of the infrastructure. In this paper, two sets of building infrastructure professionals were assessed. These are the corporate building organization (CBO) and the Operators from two shopping malls within the UK. Thirty-four factors regarding the sustainable building infrastructure appraisal were identified through literature reviews. These characteristics were accordingly classified into two factors (group I and II) and a comparative analysis of their influence conducted. Priority rating of the factors assessment on building infrastructure was through structured, administered survey amongst professionals within these organizations. Information of this survey revealed that the experts maintained a strong concordance in rating these factors. As a result, the associated factors have relatively substantial degree of influence in this context. Further indications of the result in groups I and II are that the CBO experts have indicated the infrastructure size, planning and design as the key factors. Also, the type of building characteristic was among others as the top and bottom marked cases. Similarly, the Operators too have maintained that a proper infrastructure design should incorporate a good policy framework for efficient energy saving fixtures and conservation. Additionally, the installation of quality equipment promotes cost savings of the resources and a just-in-time maintenance of the infrastructure at large. The maintain as-we-go philosophy characteristic was not strongly encouraged in this case.展开更多
