We in-vestigated the pressure-induced denaturation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of subdenaturing concen-trations of urea based on a two-state equilibrium. Pressure-induced denaturation was enhanced at urea concentrations ([U]) of 3.5 M to 8.0 M, with the free energy of denaturation at atmospheric pressure ranging from +5.0 to –2.5 kJ/mol of BSA. The m values appeared to be biphasic, with m1 and m2 of 0.92 and 2.35 kJ mol–1?M–1, respectively. Plots of versus ln[U] yielded values of u, the apparent stoichiometric coefficient, of 1.68 and 6.67 mol of urea/mol of BSA for m1 and m2, respectively. These values were compared with the m and u values of other monomeric proteins reported in or calculated from the literature. The very low values of u systematically observed for proteins were suggestive of heterogeneity in the free energy of denaturation. Thus, a u value of 140 mol of urea/mol of BSA may indicate the existence of a heterogeneous molecular population with respect to the free energy of dena-turation.展开更多

Groups 1 and 2 each consisted of eight 1-month-old male and female rats; 3 and 4 had eight 3-month-old male and female rats; 5 and 6 had eight 6-month-old male and female rats; 7 and 8 had eight 9-month old male and female rats; and 9 and 10 had eight 12-month-old male and female rats. Results: A fraction of the molecular weight of protein in the urine of rats aged 1, 9 and 12 months was higher than that of 3 and 6 months. The total protein concentration in the urine of male and female rats aged 9 and 12 months was significantly higher than that of rats aged 1 and 3 months. The urine creatinine concentrations of male and female rats aged 9 months were significantly higher when compared with that of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the 3-month-old rats seem less affected by proteinuria, because they had the least urine protein, and consistent and reduced plasma and urine concentrations of markers of renal function. The results of this study may provide a foundation for future mechanistic inquiries as to why this age group was the least affected by proteinuria.展开更多

SSF is a fermentation process which involves solid matrix and is carried out in absence or near absence of free water. SSF of potato peel mashed was carried out with S. cerevisiae at 30°C, pH of 5.5, moisture adjustment between 40 and 90%, addition of ammonium sulphate and urea salts as nitrogen supplements for the microorganisms for 3 days. The results showed that the percentage crude protein content of all the fermented samples increased significantly when compared with the unfermented sample. 40% moisture content adjustment and ammonium sulphate as nitrogen source gave the best result. The crude protein increased from 12.5% to 21.86%, which is 74.88% increment for ammonium sulphate supplementation, and 12.5% to 18.42%, which is 47% increment for urea supplementation. Therefore, the fermented peels could serve as good source of cheap protein enriched feed for livestock.展开更多
