YA literature can be defined as narratives about the individual growth and maturation of adolescent protagonist. Adolescence is the bridging process of growing from childhood to adulthood. Furthermore, it is a turbulent time of rapid physical growth and sexual development. It also creates a critical phase in the formation of identity. In this paper, the author shall identify the ways in which representation of adolescence in an American contemporary young adult novel, Anderson's Thirsty (2008), reflects and shapes the maturation of its young protagonist. The author argues that the transformation of vampire in the novel works as a metaphor for the various changes and maturation process experienced by the protagonist in the novel. Furthermore, the author's discussion will be preceded by a short history of vampire narrative. The author's analysis is supported by psychological theories of adolescence and socio-cultural approach which focuses on the ambiguities of adolescents' identity. Moreover, this paper alludes a psychoanalytic reading of the symbolism of the vampire which refers to Freud's notions of libido and death drive The conclusion of this paper is that Anderson's Thirsty is a paranormal novel which positions the implied readers to understand the trials of an adolescent protagonist during his difficult time of transition from childhood to adulthood.展开更多

D. rotundus is the main vector and transmitter of the rabies virus, which affects human beings as well as several livestock species so the study of this bat species is of high importance within the fields of animal agriculture and public health. The present study describes and compares the histologic characteristics of the urinary system of two hematophagous bat species. A total of 5 bats from each species were captured in the municipalities of Progreso de Obregón, Hidalgo (D. rotundus), and Huayacocotla, Veracruz (D. ecaudata). Organs belonging to the urinary system were extracted: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra;samples were fixed using 10% formalin and processed by the paraffin embedding technique, obtaining sections of 5 µm thickness, which in turn were stained using hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) and Gomori trichrome (GT) stains. From the obtained histologic preparations, a descriptive and comparative analysis of the structural organography of the urinary system of both species was made, and no noteworthy histological differences between samples were noted. The present research is intended to provide a framework for future studies of these species’ currently understudied microscopic anatomy.展开更多

Besides fundamental Jungian archetypes (persona, shadow, anima, animus, great mother, wise old man, hero, self and self-realization), there may be plenty of other psychological archetypes, existence of which can be deduced indirectly through stories, art, myths, religions or dreams. Purpose: This review article is to discuss the myths of Medusa, Hades and Persephone, as well as psychological archetypes present in art and stories. Methods: Several famous psychological archetypes deducted from myths, art and culture, are presented in this article and discussed from medical, psychological and philosophical perspective. Results: Interpretation of psychological archetypes deduced from here presented myths and works of art are posttraumatic embitterment disorder (Medusa), arranged marriage (Hades and Persephone), duality of human nature (Jekyll and Hyde), shared psychosis (Harley Quinn and Joker), fear, phobias, child abuse and childhood traumas (It), instinctive fear of clinical and psychic/emotional vampirism (vampires), the mystery of time (Langoliers). Conclusion: Psychological archetypes represent the powerful source of artistic and scientific inspiration originating from collective unconscious. Research, discovery and understanding of psychological archetypes may be of great value as these reveal universal human thoughts, fears, desires, tendencies, and problems being present throughout the history of humankind. Investigation of psychological archetypes may significantly improve our knowledge of human psychology.展开更多

Although much of the story takes place in England, the vampires originate in southwest Ireland, recognizable in filming locations and from historical allusions, Catholic religious references, Gaelic speech acts, traditional Irish songs, imagery from Celtic mythology, and a title that invokes a relevant Yeats poem with the title "Byzantium." Such references to Irish culture elevate the supernatural mother-daughter protagonists to modem mythic status in their centuries-long conflict with an Ireland-based, patriarchal vampire Brotherhood.展开更多

Theosis, or divinization, refers to the infinite process of self-perfection that is the basis of Christian life. Kenoticism, or "self-emptying", describes the imitation of Christ's humility. Exploring the human-vampire relationship in light of these ideas reveals the implicit Christian underpinnings of and approach to morality in these series.展开更多

It tells a love triangle story among a human-Bena, a vampire-Adward and a werewolf-Jacob. At the beginning of the movie, Adward and Jacob are in mutually hostile-dependent relationship because of their love for Beria, and this girl finally chooses Adward as her husband which greatly exacerbates the conflicts between them. But this choice is not only a choice of love but also a choice of race. Since Adward is white while Jacob is a native American. What is hidden behind this love fight is actually the struggle between the races in America. Therefore, discrimination still exist in American society. However, the relationship between Adward and Jacob has changed a lot in the third series of The Twilight when Beria is in danger. At that time, they band together and try their best to protect her. A lot of stories happen between them, and at the end of the movie, Adward and Jacob finally become good friends which indicates that American racial discrimination has also been eased with the development of society and other factors. Therefore, people can learn about the change of American racial discrimination through studying the change of relationship between Adward and Jacob.展开更多
