Variability of the circulation in the southern Huanghai Sea and East China Sea during the two investigative cruises in June 1999 被引量:5

On the basis of the hydrographic data obtained from June 17 to 25, 1999 on board R/V Eardo , Korea (hereafter'the second cruise'), the circulation in the southern Huanghai Sea and East China Sea is computed by using the modified inverse method. The comparison between the two computed results in the first cruise, which was carried out from June 4 to 19, 1999 on board R/V Xiangyanghong 14, China, and in the second cruise is made. The following results have been obtained. (1) Part of the Kuroshio flows northward through the eastern part of Section E, and its volume transport(VT) is about 6.2×106 m3/s,and its maximum velocity is about 93 cm/s.This shows that most of the Kuroshio flows northward through the region east of Section E.The VT of the offshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current west of the Kuroshio through Section E is about 0.4×106 m3/s. (2) There is the following variability between these two cruises, whose time difference is about two weeks:① The position of the Kuroshio in the second cruise is slightly more east than that in the first cruise; ②The high-density water (HDW) with a cold water occurs in the region south of Cheju Island between 125°30' and 127°E at Sections D and C. The circulation in the region of HDW is cyclonic. Comparing the position of HDW during the second cruise with that during the first cruise,it is found that its position in the second cruise moves slightly northward.(3) The cold and uniform mixing layer occurs in the layer from the 30 m level to the bottom of the middle part of Section A and in the layer from the 20 m level to the bottom of the middle part of Section B,respectively.They are both the southern part of the Huanghai Sea Cold Water Mass (HSCWM). (4) There are higher temperature and lower density with a weaker anticyclonic circulation in the southwestern part of the computed region.Its center is located at the westernmost point of Section E. 展开更多

Different versions of a new nine-layer general circulation model which is rhomboidally truncated at zonal wavenumber 15(L9R15)are introduced in this paper.On using the observed global monthly sea surfaCe temperature(SST)and sea ice(SI)data from 1979 to 1988 offered by the internahonal Atmospheric Model Iute-comparison Program(AMIP),these different model versions were integrated for the ten-year AMIP period. This study investigates the interannual variation of summer surface air temperature over Northeast Asia(NEA) and its associated circulation anomalies.Two leading modes for the temperature variability over NEA are obtained by EOF analysis.The first EOF mode is characterized by a homogeneous temperature anomaly over NEA and therefore is called the NEA mode.This anomaly extends from southeast of Lake Baikal to Japan,with a central area in Northeast China.The second EOF mode is characterized by a seesaw pattern,showing a contrasting distribution between East Asia(specifically including the Changbai Mountains in Northeast China,Korea,and Japan) and north of this region.This mode is named the East Asia(EA) mode.Both modes contribute equivalently to the temperature variability in EA.The two leading modes are associated with different circulation anomalies.A warm NEA mode is associated with a positive geopotential height anomaly over NEA and thus a weakened upper-tropospheric westerly jet.On the other hand,a warm EA mode is related to a positive height anomaly over EA and a northward displaced jet.In addition,the NEA mode tends to be related to the Eurasian teleconnection pattern,while the EA mode is associated with the East Asia-Pacific/PacificJapan pattern. 展开更多

Variability of the deep South China Sea circulation derived from HYCOM reanalysis data

This study aims to investigate variability of the deep South China Sea(SCS)circulation using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model(HYCOM)global reanalysis product.The results reveal that annual cycle is a dominant component in the deep SCS circulation.Meanwhile,the boundary circulation strength is the weakest in January and peaks between June and September.The eastern and southern boundary currents strengthen/weaken one to three months earlier than that in the western and northern boundaries.Vector Empirical Orthogonal Functions(VEOF)analysis results reveal that semiannual and intraseasonal fluctuations are significant components,of which the spatial patterns are mainly confined in the northern and western boundary areas as well as the southwestern sub-basin.Wavelet analysis results show the strength of significant fluctuation varies year to year.Trend analysis results indicate a decadal weakening in the deep SCS circulation.An anomalous anticyclonic circulation,50–70 km apart from the slope break,tends to weaken the cyclonic boundary circulation in the western and northern boundaries as well as the southwestern sub-basin.This trend is similar to the observed decadal weakening in the North Atlantic deep circulation.Thus,the findings of this study reveal that the variation of the deep SCS circulation has a remarkable response to the climate change.The mechanisms responsible for the variation are worth pursuing if more observations are available. 展开更多

Earth's variable rotation is mainly produced by the variability of the AAM(atmospheric angular momentum). In particular, the axial AAM component X_3, which undergoes especially strong variations,induces changes in the Earth's rotation rate. In this study we analysed maps of regional input into the effective axial AAM from 1948 through 2011 from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Global zonal circulation patterns related to the LOD(length of day) were described. We applied MSSA(Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis) jointly to the mass and motion components of AAM, which allowed us to extract annual, semiannual, 4-mo nth, quasi-biennial, 5-year, and low-frequency oscillations. PCs(Principal components) strongly related to ENSO(El Nino southern oscillation) were released. They can be used to study ENSO-induced changes in pressure and wind fields and their coupling to LOD. The PCs describing the trends have captured slow atmospheric circulation changes possibly related to climate variability. 展开更多
