Center pivot irrigation systems usually apply a relatively uniform amount of water to fields that are often inherently variable, which could lead to significant waste of water and energy. To address this issue, our team is now developing an Intelligent Center Pivot (ICP) by integrating sensor-based irrigation scheduling with variable rate irrigation technology. However, before this technology can be applied in commercial production, it is necessary to educate growers about its practicality and potential benefits. The objective of this study was to develop a portable tabletop intelligent center pivot model (ICPDemo) to demonstrate and promote adoption of the ICP technology. This paper describes an ICPDemo constructed in 2014, including the design specifications, electro-mechanical design, control strategy, and performance. The ICPDemo has performed according to design specifications and is successfully being used to demonstrate the benefits and effectiveness of ICP technology for irrigation scheduling. 展开更多

A variable-bit-rate characteristic waveform interpolation (VBR-CWI) speech codec with about 1.8 kbit/s average bit rate which integrates phonetic classification into characteristic waveform (CW) decomposition is proposed. Each input frame is classified into one of 4 phonetic classes. Non-speech frames are represented with Bark-band noise model. The extracted CWs become rapidly evolving waveforms (REWs) or slowly evolving waveforms (SEWs) in the cases of unvoiced or stationary voiced frames respectively, while mixed voiced frames use the same CW decomposition as that in the conventional CWI. Experimental results show that the proposed codec can eliminate most buzzy and noisy artifacts existing in the fixed-bit-rate characteristic waveform interpolation (FBR-CWI) speech codec, the average bit rate can be much lower, and its reconstructed speech quality is much better than FS 1 016 CELP at 4.8 kbit/s and similar to G. 723.1 ACELP at 5.3 kbit/s. 展开更多

This paper presented a novel variable rate fertilization system based on the method of adjusting the active feed-roll length of a fluted roller. The feasibility of this method was discussed using analysis of the fluted roller model. One seed drill produced by Kuhn Company(France),which could sow and fertilize simultaneously, was used as a test platform to implement the mechanical structure of variable rate fertilization. The design methods for the variable rate fertilization mechanical structure and actuator were introduced in detail.A low-cost and stable embedded support decision subsystem and corresponding software were developed. The support decision subsystem is based on grid management. Each grid field cell contains information about corresponding spatial position and fertilizer application rate.A SpatiaLite database was employed to solve the spatial location search and spatial data query.Experiments were conducted to evaluate the fertilization uniformity and dynamic response time. The average value of coefficient of variation is 8.4%in five different active feed-roll lengths which reflects good uniformity. The dynamic response times for the adjustment of variable rate fertilization system from 204 kg/hm^(2) to 319 kg/hm^(2) and 319 kg/hm^(2) to 204 kg/hm^(2) are about 4.2 s.The results suggest that the variable rate fertilization system performs well in dynamic adjustment and stability. 展开更多

During different growth periods, canopy size and density in orchards are variable, which need application conditions(flow rate and air flow)to be adjusted to match the canopy’s characteristics. In order to improve orchard sprayer’s automatic operating performance,an automatic variable-rate orchard sprayer(VARS)fixed with 40 electromagnetic valves and 8 brushless fans was developed based on the canopy’s spatial dimensions. Each solenoid valve and brushless motor can be individually adjusted in real-time through pulse width modulation(PWM)signals emitted by a control system to adjust each nozzle’s spout and fan rotation speed.A high-precision laser scanning sensor(light detecting and ranging,LIDAR)was adopted as the detector to measure the canopy volume using the variable rate algorithm principle.Field experiments were conducted in an apple orchard, and conventional air blast sprayer(CABS)and directed air-jet sprayer(DAJS)were tested as a comparison. Results showed that on average,46%less spraying solution was applied compared to conventional applications, while penetration rate was similar to DAJS.Normalized deposition in the canopy with variable application was higher than that of conventional applications, indicating that electronic sprayers are more efficient than conventional sprayers. It was also observed that VARS could significantly reduce off-target loss. The field experiment showed that the newly developed variable-rate sprayer can greatly reduce pesticide use and protect the environment for the orchard fruit production, and also provide a reference for design and performance optimization for plant protection machinery. 展开更多

The rapid developments of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)and vision sensor are contributing a great reformation in precision agriculture.Farmers can fly their UAV spraying pesticides around their crop fields while staying at their remote control room or any place that is separated from their farm land. However, there is a common phenomenon in rice planting management stage that some empty areas are randomly located in farmland. Therefore,a critical problem is that the waste of pesticides that occurs when spraying pesticides over rice fields with empty areas by using the common UAV,because it is difficult to control the flow accuracy based on the empty areas changing. To tackle this problem,a novel vision-based spraying system was proposed that can identify empty areas automatically while spraying a precise amount of pesticides on the target regions.By this approach, the image was preprocessed with the Lucy-Richardson algorithm, then the target area was split from the background with k-means and the feature parameters were extracted, finally the feature parameters were filtered out with a positive contribution which would serve as the input parameters of the support vector machine(SVM)to identify the target area. Also a fuzzy control model was analyzed and exerted to compensate the nonlinearity and hysteresis of the variable rate spraying system.Experimental results proved that the approach was applicable to reducing the amount of pesticides during UAV spraying, which can provide a reference for precision agriculture aviation in the future. 展开更多

Environmental impact and economic concerns have driven a variable rate technology(VRT).Spinner spreaders were mainly used for granular fertilizer application since they are simple in design, inexpensive, and can cover large areas. However, the spreader was not adequate for VRT because uniformity changes drastically while varying application rates. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a variable rate applicator with uniform spreading patterns.A commercial spreader was modified with a controller and electric actuators for controlling fertilizer discharge directions and amounts.Database was established to determine the optimum discharge direction according to the fertilizer application amount. The uniformity of spreading patterns in accordance with the spread amount per set unit area was evaluated by the statistical coefficient of variation(CV)lower than 15%is assumed to prevent damage to the crop.Test results showed that CVs were 8%,9%,and 8%,respectively,for a tractor in race track mode(adjacent passes in same direction of travel)at 200 kg/hm^(2),300 kg/hm^(2),and 400 kg/hm^(2).This indicates that the fertilizer was spread uniformly, while the coefficient of variation was 12%at 200 kg/hm^(2) in back and forth mode(adjacent passes in the opposite direction of travel).Overall, the results suggest that the race track mode is suitable for operation of a tractor to ensure uniform spreading of fertilizer when applying at variable rates. The future goal is to establish a system for automatic variable rate application according to location in connection with soil analysis and geographic information systems. 展开更多

Interactions between the central nervous system(CNS)and autonomic nervous system(ANS)play a crucial role in modulating perception, cognition, and emotion production.Previous studies on CNS–ANS interactions,or heart–brain coupling, have often used heart rate variability(HRV)metrics derived from electrocardiography(ECG)recordings as empirical measurements of sympathetic and parasympathetic activities.Functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS)is a functional brain imaging modality that is increasingly used in brain and cognition studies. The fNIRS signals contain frequency bands representing both neural activity oscillations and heartbeat rhythms. Therefore,fNIRS data acquired in neuroimaging studies can potentially provide a single-modality approach to measure task-induced responses in the brain and ANS synchronously, allowing analysis of CNS–ANS interactions. In this proof-of-concept study,fNIRS was used to record hemodynamic changes from the foreheads of 20 university students as they each played a round of multiplayer online battle arena(MOBA)game. From the fNIRS recordings, neural and heartbeat frequency bands were extracted to assess prefrontal activities and shortterm pulse rate variability(PRV),an approximation for short-term HRV,respectively.Under the experimental conditions used,fNIRS-derived PRV metrics showed good correlations with ECG-derived HRV golden standards,in terms of absolute measurements and video game playing(VGP)-related changes. It was also observed that, similar to previous studies on physical activity and exercise, the PRV metrics closely related to parasympathetic activities recovered slower than the PRV indicators of sympathetic activities after VGP.It is concluded that it is feasible to use fNIRS to monitor concurrent brain and ANS activations during online VGP,facilitating the understanding of VGP-related heart–brain coupling. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Our previous study found that the telomerase-associated protein 1(TEP1,rs938886 and rs1713449)and homo sapiens RecQ like helicase 5(RECQL5,rs820196)single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)were associated with changes in heart rate(HR)≥30%during peritoneal lavage with distilled water after gastrectomy. This study established a single tube method for detecting these three SNPs using two-dimensional(2D)polymerase chain reaction(PCR),and investigated whether SNP-SNP and SNP-environment interactions increase the risk of high HR variability(HRV).AIM To investigate whether genotypes, genetic patterns,SNP-SNP and SNP-environment interactions were associated with HRV.METHODS 2D PCR was used to establish a single-tube method to detect TEP1 rs938886 and rs1713449 and RECQL5 rs820196,and the results were compared with those of sanger sequencing. After adjusting for confounders such as age, sex, smoking, hypertension, and thyroid dysfunction,a nonconditional logistic regression model was used to assess the associations between the genotypes and the genetic patterns(codominant, dominant, overdominant, recessive, and additive)of the three SNPs and a risk≥15%or≥30%of a sudden drop in HR during postoperative peritoneal lavage in patients with gastric cancer.Gene-gene and geneenvironment interactions were analyzed using generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction.RESULTS The coincidence rate between the 2D PCR and sequencing was 100%.When the HRV cutoff value was 15%,the patients with the RECQL5(rs820196)TC genotype had a higher risk of high HRV than those who had the TT genotype(odds ratio=1.97;95%CI:1.05-3.70;P=0.045).Under the codominant and overdominant models, the TC genotype of RECQL5(rs820196)was associated with a higher risk of HR decrease relative to the TT and TT+CC genotypes(P=0.031 and 0.016,respectively).When the HRV cutoff value was 30%,patients carrying the GC-TC genotypes of rs938886 and rs820196 showed a higher HRV risk when compared with the GG–TT genotype carriers(P=0.01).In the three-factor model of rs938886,rs820196,and rs1713449,patients carrying the GC-TC-CT genotype had a higher risk of HRV compared with the wild-type GG-TT-CC carriers(P=0.01).For rs820196,nonsmokers with the TC genotype had a higher HRV risk compared with nonsmokers carrying the TT genotype(P=0.04).When the HRV cutoff value was 15%,patients carrying the TT-TT and the TC-CT genotypes of rs820196 and rs1713449 showed a higher HRV risk when compared with TT-CC genotype carriers(P=0.04 and 0.01,respectively).Patients carrying the GC-CT-TC genotypes of rs938886,rs1713449,and rs820196 showed a higher HRV risk compared with GG-CC-TT genotype carriers(P=0.02).When the HRV cutoff value was 15%,the best-fitting models for the interactions between the SNPs and the environment were the rs820196-smoking(P=0.022)and rs820196-hypertension(P=0.043)models.Consistent with the results of the previous grouping, for rs820196,the TC genotype nonsmokers had a higher HRV risk compared with nonsmokers carrying the TT genotype(P=0.01).CONCLUSION The polymorphism of the RECQL5 and TEP1 genes were associated with HRV during peritoneal lavage with distilled water after gastrectomy. 展开更多

Introduction: The wellbeing of student’s athletes has a paramount importance, a prolonged period of cognitive and physical performance that characterizes the life of student’s athletes often leads to fatigue, and a psychobiological state that increases the risk of injury and accidents. The use of Heart rate variability (HRV) has become increasingly popular as a non-invasive methodology that provides an indirect insight into the autonomic nervous system. HRV can be utilized as a diagnostic tool in detection of autonomic nervous system impairment and sympatho-vagal imbalance. HRV technology is employed to monitor the internal response of athletes to workload and identify athletes’s psychophysical stress to predict and therefore prevent injuries. Objective: The objective of the investigation is to establish whether the use of Polar H10 sensor heart rate monitors worn by athletes in a sitting position (inclination 60 degrees) during periods characterized by stress can provide a valid and non-invasive method to assess the psychophysiological state during sports competition and school exams. Method and Statistics: In the study, the HRV of 12 basketball students athletes and 4 students non-athletes was analyzed as a control group. The autonomic nervous system activity was assessed based on heart variability parameters (HRV): SDNN, rMSSD, LF, HF, and LF/HF. The measurements were made after establishing the baseline at rest, during the training phase (CT), competition phase (CC) and during the acute phase of stressors due to school exams coinciding with the competitive season (CC + E). Results: Compared to the respective values prior to the stress of the competitions and exams, a significant decrease in HRV indices was found: SDNN (P Conclusions: The analysis and examination of the data on the sample of the student population also showed a statistically significant correlation between decreased cardiac variability and injuries or indisposition to physical exertion. 展开更多

Background: Women are thought to be more susceptible to stress than men in a stressful society, and reducing stress is crucial for women to maintain their health. Static stretching (SST) is applied in various fields to not only increase muscle flexibility but also reduce stress. Additionally, conscious slower breathing (CSB) predominates parasympathetic activity, causing a relaxing effect. These results indicate that combining SST and CSB may be more useful in reducing stress. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of this combination remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of the combination of SST and CSB on autonomic activity and stress in adult women. Methods: Eleven healthy Japanese adult female participants performed SST with nonconscious natural breathing for 20 min. The same participants performed SST in combination with CSB (2 s inspiratory and 4 s expiratory) for 20 min on another day. Salivary cortisol and chromogranin A levels were measured before and after stretching as stress markers of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system. The coefficient of variation of the R-R interval (CVR-R) and high-frequency component (HF), which reflect parasympathetic nerve activity, and heart rate and low-frequency component (LF)/HF ratio, which reflect sympathetic nerve activity, were measured before, during, and after stretching. Results: SST decreased cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, CVR-R, HF, or LF/HF ratio. The combination of SST and CSB increased CVR-R and HF levels in addition to decreasing cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, or LF/HF levels. Conclusion: These results indicate that the combination of SST and CSB may increase parasympathetic activity and reduce stress. However, future randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes should support this conclusion. 展开更多

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs due to loss of nerve cells that produce dopamine in the brain, affecting approximately 4 million people worldwide. PD patients often feel an increase in anxiety levels daily. While there are medications/exercises to help relieve anxiety, there are limited methods to reduce anxiety without the help of a caretaker. As a result, MEDIC Foundation, a non-profit organization in British Columbia, Canada, is designing an automated system that consists of a wristband and an application which uses vi-bration therapy to help reduce anxiety of PD patients. Literature reviews were conducted to document the project’s needs. Phase I of the project focused on de-veloping a prototype for the application and phase II on developing the wrist-band. The team developed prototypes of a wristband that automatically applies vibration near the median nerve as the heart rate variability (HRV) deviates away from the normal threshold of the user, and an application that displays real-time heart rate variability signals as well as provides for relaxation. The development of the prototype is still in early progress. By creating this automated system, we aim to provide a solution to senior PD patients to relieve anxiety independently. . 展开更多

Objective To explore the effects of particulate matters less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) on heart repolarization/depolarization and heart rate variability (HRV). Methods We conducted a panel study for elderly subjects with heart disease in Beijing from 2007 to 2008. PM2.5 was measured at a fixed station for 20 h continuously each day while electrocardiogram (ECG) indexes of 42 subjects were also recorded repeatedly. Meteorological data was obtained from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. A mixed linear regression model was used to estimate the associations between PMz.s and the ECG indexes. The model was adjusted for age, body mass index, sex, day of the week and meteorology. Results Significant adverse effects of PM2.5 on ECG indexes reflecting HRV were observed statistically and the strongest effect of PM2.s on HRV was on lag i day in our study. However, there were no associations between PM2.5 and ECG indexes reflecting heart repolarization/depolarization. Additionally, the effects of PM2.5 on subjects with hypertension were larger than on the subjects without hypertension. Conclusion This study showed ambient PM2.5could affect cardiac autonomic function of the elderly people with heart disease, and subjects with hypertension appeared to be more susceptive to the autonomic dysfunction induced by PM2.5. 展开更多

It is usually a slight periodic variation of R-R intervals. Much information of autonomic nerve system balance can be obtained by measuring the heart rate variability of patients. It remains to be shown whether heart rate variability can be used as an index for determining the severity of insomnia and cerebral infarction. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the correlation for each frequency spectrum parameter of heart rate variability with an insomnia index, as well as the degree of neurological defects in patients with simple cerebral infarction and cerebral infarction complicated by insomnia. The goal was to verify the feasibility of frequency spectrum parameters for heart rate variability as a marker for insomnia and cerebral infarction. DESIGN: A case-control observation. SETTING: Department of Neurology, First Hospital Affiliated to China Medical University. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty inpatients, and/or outpatients, with cerebral infarction were admitted to the 202 Hospital of Chinese PLA between December 2005 and October 2006, confirmed by CT, and recruited to the study. According to the insomnia condition (insomnia is defined by a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score 〉 7), the patients were assigned to a simple cerebral infarction group and a cerebral infarction complicated by insomnia group, with 30 subjects in each group. Thirty additional subjects, who concurrently received examinations and were confirmed to not suffer from cerebral infarction and insomnia, were recruited into the control group. Written informed consent was obtained from each subject for laboratory specimens. The protocol was approved by the Hospital's Ethics Committee. METHODS: Following admission, each subject's neurological impairment was assessed with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Heart rate variability of each subject was measured with an autonomic nerve analyzer (Weijin Science and Technology Co., Ltd., Taiwan). Each frequency spectrum parameter of heart rate variability was obtained, including very low frequency, low frequency, high frequency, total power, R-R interval, and its mean square. In addition, percentage of low frequency, high frequency, and ratio of low frequency to high frequency were calculated. For each heart rate frequency spectrum parameter, the difference between groups was analyzed. Moreover, correlations of each frequency spectrum parameter with insomnia and disease condition were analyzed. Data from each index, which were not normally distributed, were processed by logarithmic transformation. The t-test was used for the comparison of intergroup differences. Single-factor linear regression analysis and t-test were used for the analysis of factor-factor correlation and coefficient of correlation, respectively. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Differences of scores in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index between the simple cerebral infarction group and the cerebral infarction complicated by insomnia group. (2) Differences of heart rate variability parameters between the simple cerebral infarction group and the control group. (3) Correlation of heart rate variability parameters, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score, and the neurological impairment score. RESULTS: Sixty patients and thirty healthy controls were included in the final analysis. (1) The scores of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the neurological impairment were significantly higher in the cerebral infarction complicated by insomnia group compared to the simple cerebral infarction group (P 〈 0.05-0.01). (2) R-R interval was significantly longer in the simple cerebral infarction group than in the control group, while R-R interval variance and high-frequency band were significantly lower in the simple cerebral infarction group compared to the control group (P 〈 0.05). (3) For cerebral infarction patients with insomnia, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score was significantly positively correlated with neurological impairment (r = 0.54, P 〈 0.01). The low-frequency band, very low-frequency band, high-frequency band, R-R interval variance, total power, R-R interval, and the percentage of high-frequency were significantly negatively correlated with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (r =4).45 to 4).90, P 〈 0.054).01) and with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (r = 4).56 to 4).36, P 〈 0.054).01). CONCLUSION: Each heart rate variability parameter can be used as an index for assessing dyssomnia and neurologic impairment (r =4).56 to 4).36, P 〈 0.054).01). 展开更多

To investigate the effects of impaired glucose metabolism (IGM) on cardiovascular autonomic nervous systems in essential hypertensive (EH) patients by comparing heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV) in EH patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Simultaneous 24-h recordings of ambulatory ECG and blood pressure monitoring were performed in 36 male old patients with simple EH and 33 male old patients with EH combined with T2DM. HRV analysis included time domain parameters such as SDNN, SDANN, SDNNi, rMSSD and pNN50, and total spectral power (TP) of HRV, which mainly consists of VLF, LF and HF component along with LF/HF ratio, was also obtained. The value of ambulatory blood pressure was represented as the mean blood pressure (mean systolic/mSBP, diastolic/mDBP and pulse pressure/mPP) during different periods (24 h/24 h, day time/d and night time/n). Standard deviation (SD) as well as coefficient of variance (CV) of blood pressure during each above-mentioned period were obtained to reflect the long-term BPV. Our result showed that SDNN, SDNNi, SDANN, rMSSD, PNN50, TP and HF of HRV in cases of EH with T2DM were all significantly lower than those in simple EH subjects (P〈0.05). No significant differences in VLF or LF was found between the two groups (P〉0.05), while LF/HF ratio was significantly higher in EH with T2DM patients than in simple EH subjects (P〈0.01). Moreover, dmSBP, 24 h-mPP and dmPP were all significantly higher in EH with T2DM patients than in simple EH subjects (P〈0.05), while nmSBP, 24 h-mSBP, 24 h-mDBP, dmDBP, nmDBP or nmPP showed no significant difference between this two groups of patients (P〉0.05). And dSBPSD, dSBPCV and 24 h-SBPSD were all significantly higher in EH with T2DM patients than in simple EH subjects (P〈0.05), while the other BPV indexes showed no significant difference between this two groups (P〉0.05). It is concluded that the cardiovascular autonomic nervous systems in EH patients was further impaired by T2DM, displaying lowering of HRV and enlargement of BPV, which in turn induced abnormal structural and functional changes of cardiovascular systems. Therefore, improving cardiovascular autonomic nervous systems might reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular complications in the EH patients with IGM. 展开更多
