General formulas for drag coefficient and settling velocity of sphere based on theoretical law 被引量:3

In this paper, a series of... The settlement of particles is of great importance in many areas. The accurate determination of drag coefficient and settling velocity in wide Reynolds number (Re) range remains a problem. In this paper, a series of new formulas for drag coefficient of spherical particles based on theoretical laws, such as the Stokes law, the Oseen law, and the Goldstein law, were developed and fitted using 480 groups of experimental data (Re 〈 2 × 10^5). The results show that the 2nd approximation of a rational function containing only one parameter can describe Co-Re relationship accurately over the whole Re range of 0-2× 10^5. The new developed formulas containing five parameters show higher goodness over wide Re range than presently existing equations. The introduction of the Oseen law is helpful for improving the fitting goodness of the empirical formulas. On the basis of one of the Oseen-based Co-Re formulas giving the lowest sum of squared relative errors Qover the whole Re range (Re 〈 2 × 10^5), a general formula for settling velocity ut based on dimensionless parameters was proposed showing high goodness. 展开更多

Characteristics of planar velocity distribution of viscous debris flow were analyzed using the measured data at Jiangjia Ravine, Yunnan, China. The velocity data were measured through using two radar velocimeters. The cross-sectional mean velocities were calculated and used to examine Kang et al's (2004) relationship, which was established for converting the flow velocity at river centerline measured by a radar velocimeter into the mean velocity based on the stop-watch method. The velocity coefficient, K, defined by the ratio of the mean velocity to the maximum velocity, ranges from 0.2 to 0.6. Kang et al's (2004) relationship was found being inapplicable to flows with K smaller than 0.43. This paper contributes to show the complexity of the planar velocity distribution of viscous debris flows and the applicability of Kang et al's relationship. 展开更多

The inflation of a five-ring cone parachute with the airflow velocity of 18 m/s is studied based on the simplified arbitrary Lagrange Euler (SALE)/fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method. The numerical results of the canopy shape, stability, opening load, and drag area are obtained, and they are well consistent with the experimental data gained from wind tunnel tests. The method is then used to simulate the opening process under different velocities. It is found that the first load shock affected by the velocity often occurs at the end of the initial inflation stage. For the first time, the phenomena that the inflation distance proportion coefficient increases and the dynamic load coefficient decreases, respectively, with the increase in the velocity are revealed. The above proposed method is competent to solve the large deformation problem without empirial coefficients, and can collect more space-time details of fluid-structure-motion information when it is compared with the traditional method. 展开更多

Urumqi Glacier No. 1 is a representative glacier in the inland areas of Central Asia and is the only Chinese reference glacier in the World Glacier Monitoring Service. In this study, we explored multi-decadal variations in the flow velocity of the glacier and the influencing factors based on continuous field observations and path coefficient analysis. Results show that the glacier flow velocity decreased from 5.5 m/a in 1980/1981 to 3.3 m/a in 2010/2011. The annual variation in the direction of glacier flow velocity in the western branch and eastern branch was less than 1°–3°, and the change of glacier flow velocity in the western branch was more dramatic than that in the eastern branch. Glacier flow velocity was influenced by glacier morphology(including glacier area, glacier length, and ice thickness), glacier mass balance and local climate conditions(air temperature and precipitation), the glacier morphology being the leading factor. The long-term flow velocity data set of Urumqi Glacier No. 1 contributes to a better understanding of glacier dynamics within the context of climatic warming. 展开更多

Calculation of terminal velocity in transitional flow for spherical particle

The terminal velocity has been widely used in extensive fields, but the complexity of drag coefficient expression leads to the calculation of terminal velocity in transitional flow (1 〈 Re ≤ 1000) with much more difficulty than those in laminar flow (Re ≤ 1) and turbulent flow (Re ≥ 1000). This paper summarized and compared 24 drag coefficient correlations, and developed an expression for calculating the terminal velocity in transitional flow, and also analyzed the effects of particle density and size, fluid density and viscosity on terminal velocity. The results show that 19 of 24 previously published correlations for drag coefficient have good prediction performance and can be used for calculating the terminal velocity in the entire transitional flow with higher accuracy. Adapting two dimensionless parameters (w*, d*), a proposed explicit correlation, w*=-25.68654 × exp (-d*/77.02069)+ 24.89826, is attained in transitional flow with good performance, which is helpful in calculating the terminal velocity. 展开更多

Based on Schaaff's collision factor theory (CFT) in liquids, the equations for nonlinear ultrasonic parameters in both organic liquid and binary organic liquid mixtures are deduced. The nonlinear ultrasonic parameters, including pressure coefficient, temperature coefficients of ultrasonic velocity, and nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A in both organic liquid and binary organic liquid mixtures, are evaluated for comparison with the measured results and data from other sources. The equations show that the coefficient of ultrasonic velocity and nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A are closely related to molecular interactions. These nonlinear ultrasonic parameters reflect some information of internal structure and outside status of the medium or mixtures. From the exponent of repulsive forces of the molecules, several thermodynamic parameters, pressure and temperature of the medium, the nonlinear ultrasonic parameters and ultrasonic nature of the medium can be evaluated. When evaluating and studying nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A of binary organic liquid mixtures, there is no need to know the nonlinear acoustic parameter B/A of the components. Obviously, the equation reveals the connection between the nonlinear ultrasonic nature and internal structure and outside status of the mixtures more directly and distinctly than traditional mixture law for B/A, e.g. Apfel's and Sehgal's laws for liquid binary mixtures. 展开更多

In some old industrial plants,in order to meet the increasingly strict requirements of pollutant emission limits,it is necessary to install the compact filtration and/or purification devices in a given narrow machine room.Different types of structural configuration might influence air distribution inside these devices.The unreasonable air distribution might lead each part of filtration or purification media to operating at largely different air flow rates.Based on a computational fluid dynamics(CFD)model,this study explores the influence of different outlet positions and different upper heights on the flow field inside chamber.The porous medium model is employed to simulate the air flow in porous media.The changing structural configurations include three positioning cases of the outlet opening and eight height cases of the upper chamber.The root mean square is defined as the non-uniformity coefficient to evaluate the uniformity of air flow distribution.The results show that the farther distance between inlet and outlet openings will bring more uniform air distribution,and the increasing height of upper chamber totally trends to exhibit more uniform air distribution. 展开更多

A drag prediction method based on thrust drag bookkeeping(TDB) is introduced for civil jet propulsion/airframe integration performance analysis.The method is derived from the control volume theory of a powered-on nacelle.Key problem of the TDB is identified to be accurate prediction of velocity coefficient of the powered-on nacelle.Accuracy of CFD solver is validated by test cases of the first AIAA Propulsion Aerodynamics Workshop.Then the TDB method is applied to thrust and drag decomposing of a realistic aircraft.A linear relation between the computations assumed free stream Mach number and the velocity coefficient result is revealed.The thrust losses caused by nozzle internal drag and pylon scrubbing are obtained by the isolated nacelle and mapped on to the in-flight whole configuration analysis.Effects of the powered-on condition are investigated by comparing through-flow configuration with powered-on configuration.The variance on aerodynamic coefficients and pressure distribution is numerically studied. 展开更多

The drag on non-spherical particles is an important basic parameter for multi-phase flows such as in biomass combustion, chemical blending, and mineral processing. Though there is much experimental research on such particles, there are few results for cuboids. This paper presents data for cuboids with a square base in static glycerin-water solutions of various volume concentrations. Complex motions were observed and characterized. A dimensionless expression is given for terminal velocity ut as a function of Archimedes number Ar which is used to develop an accurate correlation for friction factor CD. The accuracy of the correlation is 7.9% compared to experimental data in the literature. For both square plates and square rods, the terminal velocity per unit mass, ut/mp, was used to characterize the influence of narticle geometry on velocity, which was shown to be linear. 展开更多

The hydro-floating ship lift originally invented in China is a major innovation in the field of navigation technology.The shaft water levels synchronization of its unique hydraulic-driven system plays a crucial role in reducing the torque of the synchronous shafts and ensuring the safety and stability operation of the ship lift.This study aims to investigate the muti-shaft water level synchronization and the flow velocity uniformity of the combined type hydraulic-driven system.Based on the theory of residual energy,a new index m2 proposed in this study is more suitable for evaluating the flow velocity uniformity of the combined hydraulic-driven system.Finally,the critical value of m2=75 is calculated via the results of the scaled physical mode test as the threshold of water flow uniformity,and it provides a basis for determining the reasonable height of the pressure stabilizing chamber. 展开更多
