This study employed geospatial technologies to integrate spatio-temporal crime, social media and field observation data from the communities in all the six states in the southwest to develop crime hotspots that can serve as preliminary information to assist in allocating resources for crime control and prevention. Historical crime data from January 1972 to April, 2021 were compiled and updated with rigorous field survey in September, 2021. The field data were encoded, input to the SPSS 17 and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. A total 936 crime locations data were geolocated and exported to ArcGIS 10.5 for spatial mapping using point map operation and further imported to e-Spatial web-based and QGIS for the generation of hotspot map using heatmap tool. The results revealed that armed robbery, assassination and cultism were more pronounced in Lagos and Ogun States. Similarly, high incidences of farmers/herdsmen conflicts are observed in Oyo and Osun States. Increasing incidences of kidnapping are common in all the south-western states but very prominent in Ondo, Lagos and Oyo States. Most of the violent crime incidents took place along the highways, with forests being their hideouts. Violent crimes are dominantly caused by high rate of unemployment while farmer/herdsmen conflicts were majorly triggered by the scarcity of grazing fields and destruction of arable crops. The conflicts have resulted in the increasing cases of rape and disruption of social group, intake of hard drugs, cult-related activities, low income and revenue generation, and displacement of farmers and infrastructural damages. The study advocates regular retraining and equipping of security agents, establishment of cattle ranch, and installation of sophisticated IP Camera at the crime hotspots to assist in real-time crime monitoring and management.展开更多

However, it remains unexplored whether the correlation persists if the study period is extended backward in time, a different definition of violent conflict is applied, or the relationship is examined at lower geographic levels. In this study, we based on 835 internal disturbance incidents in Europe during 1049–1800 to conduct long-temporal and multi-scalar examination on the NAO-conflict nexus. ′Time-series′ and ′panel data′ disaggregation approaches, together with Granger Causality, Multiple Regression, and Survival Analyses were applied to verify the nexus quantitatively. Results show that the positive NAO-conflict correlation was significant at the continent and physiographic zone levels. During the positive NAO phases, the annual probability of internal disturbance outbreak increased by 70.0% in the southern Europe and the Mediterranean, a zone most affected by the NAO-induced desiccation effect. Yet, the NAO-conflict correlation was rather inconsistent when it was downscaled to the sub-regional level. Moreover, the NAO-conflict correlation was inflated under the time-series approach, while the panel data approach demonstrated the region-specific nature of the NAO forcing more clearly. The associated implications in examining climate-conflict nexus are discussed. Our findings may be crucial in examining violent conflict in the northwestern Africa, a highly agricultural region affected by the NAO.展开更多

These sudden and violent failures around mine openings have compromised safety, ventilation and access to mine workings.Previous studies showed that the violence of coal specimen failure depends on both the interface friction and width-to-height(W/H) ratio of coal specimen. The mode of failure for a uniaxially loaded coal specimen or a coal pillar is a combination of both shear failure along the interface and compressive failure in the coal. The shear failure along the interface triggered the compressive failure in coal. The compressive failure of a coal specimen or a coal pillar can be controlled by changing its W/H ratio. As the W/H ratio increases, the ultimate strength increases. Hence, with a proper combination of interface friction and the W/H ratio of pillar or coal specimen, the mode of failure will change from sudden violent failure which is brittle failure to non-violent failure which is ductile failure. The main objective of this paper is to determine at what W/H ratio and interface friction the mode of failure changes from violent to non-violent. In this research, coal specimens of W/H ratio ranging from 1 to 10 were uniaxially tested under two interface frictions of 0.1 and 0.25, and the results are presented and discussed.展开更多

Knowledge of the epidemiology of injuries is essential for planning, implementation and evaluation of preventive measures. Methods: We analyzed the forensic examination documents of all children under 12 years sent to the IML-DF, during 2010. The data analyzed included age, gender, cause of death (i.e.natural or external), mechanism of death (traffic accident, asphyxia, firearm injuries, poisoning, heat injuries) and the medical cause of death. Results: A large number of children (n = 123 total;n = 71 males, n = 52 females) were examined in the IML-DF, Brasília, Brazil. Mean age was 37.96 months, with a median of 12 months, and 21% of children were younger than 1 month. There were 62 cases (33 males and 29 female) classified as natural deaths. The average age for natural deaths was 18.72 months. Most cases of natural death occurred in the first year of life (n = 50), being prevalent in the first month of life (n = 24). Among the 62 cases analyzed, six were stillborns, 13 suffered intrauterine fetal distress (e.g. placental insufficiency, prematurity and meconium aspiration), 36 had lung problems (e.g. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), bronchopneumonia, pulmonary hemorrhage, interstitial pneumonitis and infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS)), five had neurologicalproblems (e.g. hydrocephalus, hydranencephaly, convulsive seizures and meningitis) and two had undetermined cause of death. There were also isolated cases of heart disease, leukemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, peritonitis causedby acute appendicitisand amniotic bandsyndrome. There were 61 cases of deaths from external causes, as a consequence of the following: blunt instrument, firearm, physical agent (i.e.heat), physicochemical agent (i.e.asphyxia) and chemical agent (i.e.poisoning). Conclusions: The profile of deaths from external causesin this developing country follows a trend similar to trends reported in the literature for other developing countries. The majority of deaths are accidental, with traffic accidents being the most frequent cause, followed by asphyxia (i.e.aspiration of gastric contents and drownings). Sporadic cases of poisoning, injuries from firearms, accidents and fires also occur.展开更多

From a critical viewpoint of aesthetics of violence, thispaper tries to use the theory of violence of post-Marxist Slavoj Zizek to analyze anddig out that the essential root of the crises in the novel is the capitalism system itselfin the post capitalist era. The extreme desire of capitalism is to occupy extreme capitalspace that leads to the building up of the totalitarian governance at the base of spatialviolent politics in the novel. The spatial isolation becomes the most necessary devicefor making biggest profits; while violence becomes the most effective security toremain the spatial isolation. The close union of multiple violence and spatial isolationbecomes the strongest foundation of the totalitarianism of capitalist society. Then itbecomes the impressive theme of the aesthetics of violence of the novel—how thegoverned can employ the violence of the other’s to break the spatial isolation anddestroy the totalitarian system of the social mainstream to win back their own liberty. Therefore, the aesthetics of violence in the novel is full of power of critical aestheticswith violence against violence. Based on such critical aesthetics of violence, theforces of self-consciousness and self-activity of the disciplined others are awakeningfor their subjective rights on the way when violence against violence.展开更多

The Tenerife Province is ranked 16th among the 52 Spanish provinces for its suicide rate. From 2007 till 2010, the rate increased from 2007 to 2008, then dropped in 2010. Slight rise occurred in suicide rates in 2010. This rate increased from 2007 to 2008, with a decrease of rate in 2010. Slight rise occurred in suicide rates in 2010. In 2013 the province saw 75 suicides per year. 90% - 98% of suicides are closely related to mental disease with the remaining 10% associated with different poor causes of the subject, according to bibliography. In this retrospective study, it has been found that the highest risk rests with men over 40 years of age in the central and southern part of the island. Among the forms of suicide reported, the most common is hanging followed by jumping from a height. It’s important to understand the reasons behind suicidal behavior from a psychosocial perspective, taking into account “unsafe” indicators and individual profiles. The lethal nature of a suicide attempt also depends on the form of suicide adopted and the possibility of a rescue. Specific protocols to prevent suicide should be promoted and discussed between health and social services.展开更多

However, these agendas fail to deliver their promises in not providing empirical evidences to confirm theory. In this sense, the present paper provides a fresh look to water scarcity implications, presenting a theoretical framework and new causal mechanism based on complex interdependence theory applied to the physical reality in an international basin. As such, the inferred causal mechanism, its parts and causal direction is investigated applying process-tracing technique to the Rio Grande-Colorado River. The paper finds by tracing the causal mechanism evidences to confirm new theory and enough analytical power to test in other cases to increase confidence in theory to fulfill generalization requirement.展开更多

Contemporary times in which the human condition seems to be extremely difficult are presented in a somber way. Isolation from nature results in the existence filled with fear of death. Natural death is a mentally inconceivable occurrence, an embarrassing phenomenon, and therefore unworthy of being remembered. Only sudden, spectacular death creating media hype seems to be meaningful and worth paying attention to. Instant death is set in opposition to slow death which is also called postponed death. Death in the heat of work, duties, obligations, and prohibitions is the death inflicted at the request of both an employee and an employer. Work rewarded with payment is an act of temporary suspension of death. Burdened with work, people forget about the debt they have incurred from nature. A contemporary employee does not deserve death and instant death is only act of salvation, the act of free will. The second part of the paper focuses on artistic activity of Zuzanna Janin and Bogna Burska. Both artists deal with an issue of media death using different means of expression. Spinning their narratives of intimate decaying and media rage in a public space, they correspond with the Baudrillard's philosophical thought.展开更多

In this research, coal specimens of W/H ratio ranging from 1 to 10 were uniaxially tested under two interface frictions of 0.1 and 0.25, and the results are presented and discussed.
文摘An identification technique for sharp interface and penetrated isolated particles is developed for simulating two-dimensional,incompressible and immiscible two-phase flows using meshless particle methods in this paper. This technique is based on the numerically computed density gradient of fluid particles and is suitable for capturing large interface deformation and even topological changes such as merging and breaking up of phases.A number of assumed particle configurations will be examined using the technique, including these with different level of randomness of particle distribution. The tests will show that the new technique can correctly identify almost all the interface and isolated particles, and also show that it is better than other existing popular methods tested.
文摘Using the 18 cm Hα-Photoheliograph at Yunnan Observatory,we obtained theAR5629(S17,L75)data.The AR existed at the southern hemisphere of solar disk duringthe days from Aug.4 to 16.Except Aug.16th when the AR partly moved away from thedisk, sunspot group type was HRX,the AR kept its complex type in McIntoshclassfication on the other 12 days and there were 8 days, spot group areas over 1。
文摘The region AR 5395 was the largest active region in Mar, 1989. It first appearedfrom solar east limb on Mar. 7th. We saw an 1B class flare with compact structure ofchromospheric faculae at 0830 UT on Mar. 8th. At 0245 UT, the photo of 2N / M1.8flare was obtained with Hα telescope on 9th, and the bending slim filaments tend to
文摘1. Introduction The AR 5395 in March, 1989 has been the most intensive active region since 20solar cycle. During the AR 5395 passing across the solar disk from 6 March to 19,March, it produced 194 optical flares, 106 X-ray events (including 11 class
文摘The 3B optical flare was produced within the AR 5395 on March, 15. 1989. It lo-cated at N35, W33. The sunspot group was large and had complex structure. The mainspot formed a large stripe within the AR can be clearly seen from chromosperic images.During the day, the sunspot group type was FKC, magnetic configuration BGD and
文摘Purposes: The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern of mortality in children’s Federal District. Sporadic cases of poisoning, injuries from firearms, accidents and fires also occur.
文摘The Hunger Games, a current popular dystopian fiction written byAmerican writer Suzanne Collins, reveals the social crises of the post-capitalism time.It stirs up the harsh criticism for its many violent depictions, but it is the depictions ofviolence that make it special. Based on such critical aesthetics of violence, theforces of self-consciousness and self-activity of the disciplined others are awakeningfor their subjective rights on the way when violence against violence.
文摘Suicide is treated by society as a taboo subject despite it being the leading cause of unnatural death in Spain. Specific protocols to prevent suicide should be promoted and discussed between health and social services.
文摘In the last few decades, water scarcity and its implications to economic, social and political dimensions has become a hot topic, especially for research agendas that try to establish a causal relationship with violent conflicts. The paper finds by tracing the causal mechanism evidences to confirm new theory and enough analytical power to test in other cases to increase confidence in theory to fulfill generalization requirement.
文摘The first part of the paper presents the philosophical concept of Jean Baudrillard in which the issues of death and dying constitute an essential theme. Spinning their narratives of intimate decaying and media rage in a public space, they correspond with the Baudrillard's philosophical thought.
文摘Some critics have pointed out that Hemingway gravely handicap-ped himself by dealing with violent action rather thanacts of intelli-gence.This idea is not right because it does not suit well with allhis works. The Snows of Kilimanjaro, the short story we are discussing here,is something about “the act of intelligence”。It shows
