Mastering Presenters by Means of Visual Aids: Assessing Students' Oral Presentations

The introduction of the ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in education has set a new paradigm in knowledge acquisition. The Internet, overhead projectors and interactive boards, presentation and animation software, and online databases are only some resources that teachers use in order to present information in a more dynamic, immediate, and stunning way, transforming and revitalizing the teaching-learning process. The ICTs have been established in the university classroom and nowadays, they have become an essential part in this teaching-learning process. Lecturers make use of them in the same proportion as they make of traditional materials. At the same time, students have to be acquainted with these new technologies and they also have to be able to deal with them. The objective of this paper is twofold: On the one hand, we study and show how our students make use of the technologies when they have to face their oral presentations in the subject Advanced English: Professional Settings (English Studies Degree at Universitat Jaume I in Castellen, Spain). It is acknowledged that visual aids can be helpful to support a speech, but we want to analyze if the visual aids are successfully applied, how and to which extent. On the other hand, we want to make out the opinions of their classmates about the use of these graphical resources (students fill in a questionnaire about the effectiveness of the visual aids in their classmates' presentations and how they would improve them). Results demonstrate that not only teachers make advantage of the new technological resources, we show, based on the students' oral presentations and their peer-reviews, that also our university students are increasingly aware of the advantage and importance of the ICTs in the classroom. 展开更多

An integration processing system of three-dimensional laser scanning information visualization in goaf was developed. It is provided with multiple functions, such as laser scanning information management for goaf, cloud data de-noising optimization, construction, display and operation of three-dimensional model, model editing, profile generation, calculation of goaf volume and roof area, Boolean calculation among models and interaction with the third party soft ware. Concerning this system with a concise interface, plentiful data input/output interfaces, it is featured with high integration, simple and convenient operations of applications. According to practice, in addition to being well-adapted, this system is favorably reliable and stable. 展开更多

Effective implementation of goaf detection and accurate acquisition of its spatial characteristics including the three-dimensional morphology the spatial position as well as the actual boundary and volume are important basis to analyze predict and control disasters caused by goaf. In recent years three-dimensional laser scanning technology has been effectively applied in goaf detection [3 4]. Large quantities of point cloud data that are acquired for goaf by means of the three-dimensional laser scanning system are processed relying on relevant engineering software to generate a three-dimensional model for goaf. Then a general modeling analysis and processing instrument are introduced to perform subsequent three-dimensional analysis and calculation [5 6]. Moreover related development is also carried out in fields such as three-dimensional detection and visualization of hazardous goaf detection and analysis of unstable failures in goaf extraction boundary acquisition in stope visualized computation of damage index aided design for pillar recovery and three-dimensional detection

I once did the class-observation when I pursued the master's degree in the U.S.A.,and I learned a lot from it, such as visual aids, the method of small conferences, and in-class practices concerning the evaluation ofstudents' papers. Purpose:To evaluate the potential clinical usability of a new prototype of ophthalmic blue light filters developed by using electrochromic technology in pseudophakic patients complaining of glare.Methods:A prototype of electrochromic device was developed,with a specific frame that enclosed an electronic driver that allowed personalizing its function for each patient.A pro-spective,observational case series study was performed to test it.Five patients who had un-dergone cataract surgery with clear intraocular lenses and complaining of glare were included in the study.Main outcome measures were the results obtained in the satisfaction questionnaire that was delivered to patients.Then,visual acuity,contrast sensitivity,and reading ability data were evaluated with and without the prototype under diferent lighting conditions and different modes of the prototype after a complete month of use.Lens transmittance was also measured.Results:Visual acuity,contrast sensitivity and reading function did not change significantly with prototype use.The main activity for which the prototype was used was walking.Only one patient found that the dimming level was insuficient.No patients reported variable discomfort when passing tunnels,not sufficiently clear indoors,or put on and remove discomfort.The lenses slightly decreased their transmittance at the end of the study.Conclusion:Glasses based on elect rochromic technology may be acceptable for outdoor/indoor use and for distance-near vision.Future studies with larger samples must be conducted to confirm the clinical usability of these glasses. 展开更多

IntroductionTeaching vocabulary,is one of the most important tasks in teaching English.With successful teaching ofvocabulary,students will find English classes interesting and words easy to memorise.If English classesare dull,students will not be interested in trying to learn new words.Sometime students find itimpossible to distinguish the difference between so many similar words.In my experience,one of themost effective ways to solve the problems is to make appropriate use of a very simple teaching aid-coloured chalk.Coloured chalk can produce‘sharp contrasts’on the blackboard.‘Sharp contrasts’willhelp students to discover associations between words,word formations,and minor differences in thespelling of some commonly confused words.With coloured chalk,teachers do not have to ask studentsagain and again to pay attention,the‘sharp contrasts’will highlight the key features.Teachingvocabulary with appropriate use of coloured chalk will produce twice the result with half the effort. 展开更多
