Exploring the Practice of Cultivating Design Thinking Skills in Visual Communication Major

The development of diversified industries has promoted the emergence of diversified majors,and visual communication is a new type of profession,and the course is also a new type of course,which requires students to have better design thinking,and how to improve the design thinking of visual communication majors through daily learning.Based on this,this paper proposes a definition of visual communication and the relevance of design thinking.It proposes a strategy to enhance the design thinking ability of visual communication majors.

Visual Communication Design of Digital Media in Digital Advertising

With the continuous development of modem science and technology,great changes have taken place in the advertising media industry where the traditional form of advertising has gradually changed into digital ones.Compared with the traditional advertising,digital advertising has more flexibility and has a variety of forms in its advertising creation according to product itself.In addition,visual communication design plays a critical role where it is an important way to improve digital advertising.Therefore,it is necessary to optimize visual communication design in order to improve the quality of digital advertising.In this way,this article carries out an in-depth research and analysis on the visual communication design of digital media in digital advertising and put forward some reasonable suggestions and measures,aiming to further promote the development of China's advertising media industry.

DVCast:denoising and variable dct for analog visual communications

Recently,analog visual transmission has attracted considerable attention owing to its graceful performance degradation for various wireless channels.In this study,we propose a novel analog visual communications system,named DVCast,in which an image denoising algorithm is used to fully utilize spatial correlation;moreover,the variable block size Discrete Cosine Transform(DCT)is used to preserve more correlation information in an image.Obviously,there is a tradeoff between system performance and computing complexity.Therefore,to improve the real-time performance of the proposed system,implementation of Block Matching with 3D filtering(BM3D)and DCT by Graphics Processing Units(GPUs)is introduced.According to DCT block size,i.e.,88,1616,and 3232,the schemes DVCast8,DVCast16,and DVCast32,respectively,are designed and implemented.Simulations show that DVCast with larger block size achieves better gain and visual quality than reference schemes.Moreover,it requires less computing time.DVCast32 outperforms conventional digital schemes by approximately 3.51 dB and achieves a 1.12 dB gain over state-of-the-art reference schemes.Furthermore,the analysis shows that DVCast can reduce overhead by at least 75%.

The visual experience and visual communication design of shallow relationships

The audience＇s visual experience accurately convey visual information plays an important role. Designers should be based on the viewer＇s visual experience and give full play to its visual psychological dynamic reaction, make its ＂see＂ and ＂knowledge＂ at the same time, to actively participate in the design work of understanding and comprehension, let viewers to appreciate to communicate with the designer＇s aesthetic experience, in order to achieve the purpose of information.

Who Populates the Visual Landscape of the ELT Coursebooks？： A Photo Analytical Exploration

The aim of this study is to portray and explore the variety of social actors depicted visually along the pages of the intermediate level ELT coursebooks that are published locally （by British and American publishers） and marketed globally （mostly to the EFL contexts）. For this, a thorough photo-ethnographic exploration of the visuals supported by the inventory of ＂social actor interaction network＂ is employed. In the field of Coursebook Analysis, visuals have attracted limited attention despite marking asocio-semiotically rich discursive field. In fact, the semiotic labor division between the ＂word＂ and the ＂image＂ in representing and reconstructing （simulating） the world, points to a gain on the part of the image as the brain is evolutionarily more experienced in processing visual information than processing verbal information. Therefore, images can appeal more directly to the sensory experience domains of the viewers via visual contact, evoking deeper consciousness. Acting as the prominent mediators of signification practice, visuals catalogue the representations and simulations of social-life viewed l^om a particular subject position associated with a particular set of norms, beliefs, and values. Hence, they position the viewers across dynamic loci of subjectivities in terms of social distance, relations, and interaction. As both reflections and reproductions of reality, images in the coursebooks have the potent to influence learners＇ perspectives of the world presenting them with readymade cognitive schemes. In order to reveal a comprehensive picture of the visually depicted social actors and the identity options made available through them, in this study the author focused on the peopled photos of the 6 popularly traded ELT coursebooks. The author investigated them regarding the relations of social distance, involvement, power and interaction formed between the depicted social actors and their viewers as well as the emergent practices of exclusion, role allocation, genericization, specification, assimilation, individualization, and categorization. The results show that the representational repertoires of the coursebooks contain disproportionately distributed visual depictions of social actors in terms of cultural orientation and gender. The ＂culturally different＂ are repeatedly pictured in assimilative ways as an aggregate of enumerable people, while the social actors of the reference group are usually pictured individually and with their own intended meaning.

Reasons for Calling Doctor： Visualizing Callers＇ Multi-unit Turns and Filming Television Call-ins as Institutional Interaction

This study describes discursive and visual features of telephone openings to a live broadcast television call-in program based on the analysis of the ＂multi-unit reason-for-the-call turn＂ （Couper-Kuhlen, 2001）. The data were based on video-recordings of the call-in program broadcast daily on Hakka channel in Taiwan, in which callers call to seek advice on health problems. The discourse analysis shows that callers＇ ＂multi-unit reason-for-the-call turns＂ can be classified into three forms including request, epistemic frame and descriptions of symptoms, and telling of lifestyle. The visual analysis demonstrates that the visual shots of ＂multi-unit reason-for-the-call turns＂ orient viewers to the studio scene in which the invited guest, usually the medical doctor, can be seen listening to callers＇ upcoming questions. Based on the analyses and an interview with the camera director of this television program, the discussion sheds light on how television production practices use callers＇ multi-unit turns as a resource for switching to the studio shot, which helps to build an image of the expert and his/her role and function in the advice-seeking program. In this sense, filming and television production practices rely on linguistic resources and the visualization of callers＇ multi-unit turns has meanings in the organization of studio interaction as ＂institutional interaction＂ （Drew ＆ Heritage, 1992）, being shaped by interactants＇ identities, roles, and tasks relevant for the specific institutional needs or purposes.

Reading the Visual Design of Job Advertisements in Taiwan Residents Newspapers

This content analysis of print advertisements for jobs focuses on changes in choices of visual semiotic resources over time. Recruitment advertisements as a genre of persuasion discourse require careful design, not only in terms of writing but also in the selection of visual images, which can help attract candidates＇ attention and therefore enhance the effectiveness of the messages conveyed. It has also been argued that changes in visual-communication styles of recruitment advertisements could, to some extent, reflect how such advertisements were perceived as functioning from the employers＇ perspectives. In this paper, content analysis of job advertisements as printed in weekend newspapers in three different years （1993, 2003, and 2013） revealed that： （1） the presence of visual content in job advertisements fluctuated over the past two decades; and （2） to make recruitment advertisements more eye-catching, visual images were more likely to be placed in areas identified as salient in theoretical terms. The results shed new light on the roles played by the visual semiotic resources of job advertisements for the purpose of attracting human resources effectively.

The Legacy and Future of Saussurean Semiology in the Study of Art and Visual Communication

The present study discusses how the emergence of semiology has outlined a new trajectory for visual and pictorial studies.First,we outline how Ferdinand de Saussure’s thoughts on the sign and its relation to visual communication has developed.Second,we interrogate its impact on art history,an already established science of visuality,throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.Third,we briefly discuss whether art history’s answer to reading Saussure is a denial or a positive affirmation of political responsibility shared by visual studies in general.The study highlights some of the most pertinent parts of the Saussurean legacy for the study of visual communication as a system,and some of the challenges and opportunities this legacy has created.

Influence of ambient water coloration on habitat and conspecific choice in the female Lake Malawi cichlid, Metriaclima zebra

Female cichlid fish living in African great lakes are known to have sensory systems that are adapted to ambient light environments.These sen-sory system adaptations are hypothesized to have influenced the evolution of the diverse male nuptial coloration.In rock-dwelling Lake Malawi mbuna cichlids,however,the extent to which ambient light environments influence female sensory systems and potentially associated male nuptial coloration remains unknown.Yet,the ubiquitous blue flank coloration and UV reflection of male mbuna cichlids suggest the potential impacts of the blue-shifted ambient light environment on these cichlid's visual perception and male nuptial coloration in the shallow water depth in Lake Malawi.In the present study,we explored whether and how the sensory bias of females influences intersexual communication in the mbuna cichlid,Metriaclima zebra.A series of choice experiments in various light environments showed that M.zebra females (1)have a pref-erence for the blue-shifted light environment,(2)prefer to interact with males in blue-shifted light environments,(3)do not show a preference between dominant and subordinate males in full-spectrum,long-wavelength filtered,and short-wavelength filtered light environments,and (4)show a"reversed"preference for subordinate males in the UV-filtered light environment.These results suggest that the visual perception of M.zebra females may be biased to the ambient light spectra in their natural habitat by local adaptation and that this sensory bias may influence the evolution of blueand UV reflectivepatterns in male nuptial coloration.

Challenges and Prospects of Machine Learning in Visible Light Communication

Visible light communication(VLC)is a promising research field in modern wireless communication.VLC has its irreplaceable strength including rich spectrum resources,no electromagnetic disturbance,and high-security guarantee.However,VLC systems suffer from the non-linear effects that exist in almost every part of the system.As a part of artificial intelligence,machine learning(ML)is showing its potential in non-linear mitigating for its natural ability to fit all kinds of transfer functions,which may dramatically push the research in VLC.This paper introduces the application of ML in VLC,describes five recent research of deep learning applications in VLC,and analyses the performance.

Visually Modelling Collaborative Research into Innovative Community Disaster Resilience Practice,Strategy,and Governance

In 2013 a new collaborative center was established in Wellington, New Zealand to focus on integrating resilience research with the region’s community disaster resilience strategy. An earlier study with parties to this center had indicated that researcher and practitioner groups were divided by attention to their own immediate knowledge and skills, but agreed there was a need to maximize community resilience benefits amongst a regional population. An action research workshop of researchers and practitioners used a visual logic model to focus on the pragmatic benefits of improving community resilience. The visual logic model was used to design research activities that would improve the regional community resilience strategy, which was still in an early implementation phase.Ten of 14 workshop participants were interviewed following the workshop. Statistical content analysis of interview data highlighted certain strengths of the action research process: visual monitoring and evaluation planning was a catalyst for complicated conversations between two very different groups of professionals; and researchers became more focused on practical issues as a result. Other findings suggested that in future collaborative researchgovernance would benefit from wider cycles of strategic intelligence, enhanced research contributions, and the use of different information formats for different purposes.Different formats for different purposes should also be considered when developing and implementing large-scale disaster risk reduction policies and strategies.

Saussure regarded nautical flag signalling codes as a prime example of semiological systems.They have something in common with language(e.g.,the principle of arbitrariness)but also some distinctive features(for instance,visual signifiers are unlike auditory ones in being able to deploy different features at the same time,such as shape and colour).The best-known example is the International Code of Signals(ICS).The system as it was during Saussure’s lifetime is explained with reference to his scattered observations,such as that a signal flag is merely“un morceau d’étoffe”until it is brought into use according to the prescriptions of the code shared by its users.Some commentators at the time envisaged this form of visual communication as a“universal language”.However,it is based on a restricted code,lacking the semantic universality of natural language.Each flag represents a letter,and combinations of flags represent predefined wordings in a“code book”.Such visual codes therefore depend on the prior existence of natural languages into and out of which they can be translated.

Architectural graphics and the experience of space. Freehand drawing and photograph to deepen on communicative qualities in linear perspective

Architecture communication on photo-sharing social networking services like Instagram focuses on photorealism.Meanwhile,the conceptual intention or the experience of the architectural space has less impact in these media.Some architectural graphics techniques are closer to this purpose due to their nature.The main objective is to identify the visual qualities of the architectural space experience from a linear perspective.To do this,the research proposes the design of a visual pattern recognition tool and applies it to pairs of images(photography and drawing)from the same place.The results provide the strategy design based on five variables:the level of human presence,the distortion of perspective,the chromatic distortion,the overlay realism and the emphasis.Finally,the visual summaries lead to values that help to understand the communicative qualities of the experience of space due to their ability to compare main milestones of visual information.

Multispectral image fusion method based on intensity-hue-saturation and nonsubsampled three-channels non-separable wavelets

A new multispectral image fusion method based on intensity-hue-saturation（IHS） transform and threechannel non-separable wavelets whose dilation matrix is[2,1;1,1]is proposed.The multi-resolution decompositions of the intensity of multispectral image and panchromatic image are performed in nonsubsampled mode using the three-channel non-separable wavelet filter bank.The approximation images and the detail images of the multi-resolution pyramids are fused.The experimental results show that this method has good visual effect.The performance outperforms the IHS fusion method.the discrete wavelet transform （DWT） fusion method,and the IHS-DWT fusion method in preserving spectral quality and high spatial resolution information.

Correction of ultraviolet single photon counting image distortion

Single photon counting imaging technology has been widely used in space environment detection, astronomy observation, nuclear physics, and ultraweak bioluminescence. However, the distortion of the single photon counting image will badly affect the measurement results. Therefore, the correction of distortion for single photon counting image is very significant. Ultraviolet single photon imaging system with wedge and strip anode is introduced and the influence factor leading to image distortion is analyzed. To correct original distorted image, three different image correction methods, namely, the physical correction, the global correction, and the local correction, are applied. In addition, two parameters, i.e., the position index and the linearity index, are defined to evaluate the performance of the three methods. The results suggest that the correction methods can improve the quality of the initial image without losing gray information of each counting light spot. And the local correction can provide the best visual inspections and performance evaluation among the three methods.

Fast macroblock mode selection algorithm for multiview depth video coding

Huge computational complexity of multiview video plus depth （MVD） coding is an obstacle for putting MVD into applications. A fast macroblock mode selection algorithm is proposed to reduce the computa- tional complexity of multiview depth video coding. The proposed algorithm, implementing on a joint coding scheme, combines an effective prediction mechanism and an object boundary discriminating method. The prediction mechanism which is designed based on the macroblock mode similarities reduces the number of macroblock mode candidates in depth video coding. The object boundary discriminating method extracts the regions, which are with discontinuous depth values and important for virtual view rendering, by using macroblock deviation factor. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly promote the coding speed of depth video by 2.00-3.40 times, while maintaining high rate distortion （RD） performance in comparison with the full search algorithm.

A Novel Fractal-Based Real Time Video Encoder

Fractal encoding technique possesses some particular properties which make it as an attractive approach to video sequences compression. In this paper, we propose a novel fractal based encoding method for video signals, which, based on Self Transformation Systems( STS ), is combined with Motion Compensation as well as nonlinear transformation. Experiment of results of realtime image sequences show that the proposed method can achieve a very fast encoding speed and acceptable tradeoff between compression ration and decoding quality.
