Brain Localization and the Integrated Systems Hypothesis: Evidence from Broca’s Region

Classical and recent studies on brain localization propose that Broca’s area underpin expressive langua... The human brain is a fascinatingly complex organ with specialized structures associated with distinct functions. Classical and recent studies on brain localization propose that Broca’s area underpin expressive language and this has been generalized to explain brain functional organization. However, recent neuroimaging studies have shown that the Broca’s area is an extended network that not only participate in its primary function-expressive language processing but in secondary functions-processing non-linguistic/nonverbal tasks as well. Also, there is hierarchical connectivity and interaction of Broca’s region and different brain areas in underlying related primary functions. For this review, I start with revisiting the classical description of brain localization. I then discuss the neuroanatomy of language production and the role of Broca’s region in language processing. I then highlight the participation of the Broca’s area in non-linguistic tasks and non-primary linguistic tasks. Ultimately, I propose a novel hypothesis called integrated systems hypothesis. The integrated systems hypothesis is useful for guiding research on the multimodal role of specific localized integrated systems of the brain especially the role of the Broca’s region in integrating linguistic and non-linguistic processing and how this facilitate language production. 展开更多

LDM (Local Dynamic Map) is standardized by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) to manage the vehicle sensor data and the map data. Implementations of LDM are reported on documents of ETSI, but there are no numerical results. The implementations of LDM are deployed the database management system. We think that the response time of the database becomes higher as the number of vehicles grows. In this paper, we have implemented and evaluated the LDM with the collision detection application. 展开更多

In order to make the peak and offset of the signal meet the requirements of artificial equipment,dynamical analysis and geometric control of the laser system have become indispensable.In this paper,a locally active memristor with non-volatile memory is introduced into a complex-valued Lorenz laser system.By using numerical measures,complex dynamical behaviors of the memristive laser system are uncovered.It appears the alternating appearance of quasi-periodic and chaotic oscillations.The mechanism of transformation from a quasi-periodic pattern to a chaotic one is revealed from the perspective of Hamilton energy.Interestingly,initial-values-oriented extreme multi-stability patterns are found,where the coexisting attractors have the same Lyapunov exponents.In addition,the introduction of a memristor greatly improves the complexity of the laser system.Moreover,to control the amplitude and offset of the chaotic signal,two kinds of geometric control methods including amplitude control and rotation control are designed.The results show that these two geometric control methods have revised the size and position of the chaotic signal without changing the chaotic dynamics.Finally,a digital hardware device is developed and the experiment outputs agree fairly well with those of the numerical simulations. 展开更多

The Problem of Photovoltaic(PV)defects detection and classification has been well studied.Several techniques exist in identifying the defects and localizing them in PV panels that use various features,but suffer to achieve higher performance.An efficient Real-Time Multi Variant Deep learning Model(RMVDM)is presented in this article to handle this issue.The method considers different defects like a spotlight,crack,dust,and micro-cracks to detect the defects as well as loca-lizes the defects.The image data set given has been preprocessed by applying the Region-Based Histogram Approximation(RHA)algorithm.The preprocessed images are applied with Gray Scale Quantization Algorithm(GSQA)to extract the features.Extracted features are trained with a Multi Variant Deep learning model where the model trained with a number of layers belongs to different classes of neurons.Each class neuron has been designed to measure Defect Class Support(DCS).At the test phase,the input image has been applied with different operations,and the features extracted passed through the model trained.The output layer returns a number of DCS values using which the method identifies the class of defect and localizes the defect in the image.Further,the method uses the Higher-Order Texture Localization(HOTL)technique in localizing the defect.The pro-posed model produces efficient results with around 97%in defect detection and localization with higher accuracy and less time complexity. 展开更多

In distributed cloud storage systems, inevitably there exist multiple node failures at the same time. The existing methods of regenerating codes, including minimum storage regenerating(MSR) codes and minimum bandwidth regenerating(MBR) codes, are mainly to repair one single or several failed nodes, unable to meet the repair need of distributed cloud storage systems. In this paper, we present locally minimum storage regenerating(LMSR) codes to recover multiple failed nodes at the same time. Specifically, the nodes in distributed cloud storage systems are divided into multiple local groups, and in each local group(4, 2) or(5, 3) MSR codes are constructed. Moreover, the grouping method of storage nodes and the repairing process of failed nodes in local groups are studied. Theoretical analysis shows that LMSR codes can achieve the same storage overhead as MSR codes. Furthermore, we verify by means of simulation that, compared with MSR codes, LMSR codes can reduce the repair bandwidth and disk I/O overhead effectively. 展开更多

Improvements in early screening,new diagnostic techniques,and surgical treatment have led to continuous downward trends in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)morbidity and mortality rates.However,high recurrence and refractory cancer after hepatectomy remain important factors affecting the long-term prognosis of HCC.The clinical characteristics and prognosis of recurrent HCC are heterogeneous,and guidelines on treatment strategies for recurrent HCC are lacking.Therapies such as surgical resection,radiofrequency ablation,and transhepatic arterial chemoembolization are effective for tumors confined to the liver,and targeted therapy is a very important treatment for unresectable recurrent HCC with systemic metastasis.With the deepening of the understanding of the immune microenvironment of HCC,blocking immune checkpoints to enhance the antitumor immune response has become a new direction for the treatment of HCC.In addition,improvements in the tumor immune microenvironment caused by local treatment may provide an opportunity to improve the therapeutic effect of HCC treatment.Ongoing and future clinical trial data of combined therapy may develop the new treatment scheme for recurrent HCC.This paper reviews the pattern of recurrent HCC and the characteristics of the immune microenvironment,demonstrates the basis for combining local treatment and systemic treatment,and reports current evidence to better understand current progress and future approaches in the treatment of recurrent HCC. 展开更多

Local dose-dense chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer via minimally invasive implantation of 3D printed devices

Dose-dense chemotherapy is the preferred first-line therapy for triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC),a highly aggressive disease with a poor prognosis.This treatment uses the same drug doses as conventional chemotherapy but with shorter dosing intervals,allowing for promising clinical outcomes with intensive treatment.However,the frequent systemic administration used for this treatment results in systemic toxicity and low patient compliance,limiting therapeutic efficacy and clinical benefit.Here,we report local dose-dense chemotherapy to treat TNBC by implanting 3D printed devices with timeprogrammed pulsatile release profiles.The implantable device can control the time between drug releases based on its internal microstructure design,which can be used to control dose density.The device is made of biodegradable materials for clinical convenience and designed for minimally invasive implantation via a trocar.Dose density variation of local chemotherapy using programmable release enhances anti-cancer effects in vitro and in vivo.Under the same dose density conditions,device-based chemotherapy shows a higher anticancer effect and less toxic response than intratumoral injection.We demonstrate local chemotherapy utilizing the implantable device that simulates the drug dose,number of releases,and treatment duration of the dose-dense AC(doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide)regimen preferred for TNBC treatment.Dose density modulation inhibits tumor growth,metastasis,and the expression of drug resistance-related proteins,including p-glycoprotein and breast cancer resistance protein.To the best of our knowledge,local dose-dense chemotherapy has not been reported,and our strategy can be expected to be utilized as a novel alternative to conventional therapies and improve anti-cancer efficiency. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to evaluate the production system and productivity indices of local swine raised in subsistence production system in East Timor.About 1,096 respondents were interviewed in fitting villages in eight municipalities.In each village,10%of breeders were interviewed as respondents,using simple random method and the interviews based on established questionnaires.It was observed that about 80%-90%of total respondents still used subsistence production system.The result of descriptive statistical analysis showed that the average of piglets per litter was 4-6 and weight of piglets at birth was 0.97±0.22 kg.The age of weaning of piglets and the weaning weight was 3.94±0.72 months and 5.56±0.88 kg,respectively.The age of the first breeding gilts was 8-10 months;calving interval was 6-12 months.Productive period of females was 3-12 years,and the number of mortality rate of piglets was 0.17%to 1%per production period.Thus it was concluded that the subsistence production system could affect the productivity level of local pigs. 展开更多

This paper presents a distributed wireless sensor network for multiple mobile agents localization. Localization of mobile agents, such as mobile robots, humans, and moving objects, in an indoor space is essential for robot-robot interaction (RRI) and human-robot interaction (HRI). The standard localization system, which is based on sensors installed in the robot body, is not suitable for multiple agents. Therefore, the concept of sensor network, which uses wireless sensors distributed in a specified space, is used in this study. By analyzing related studies, two solutions are proposed for the localization of mobile agents including humans: a new hardware system and a new software algorithm. The first solution focuses on the architectural design of the wireless sensor network for multiple agent localization. A passive RFID system is used, and then the architecture of the sensor network is adapted to suit the target system. The second solution centers on a localization algorithm based on the sensor network. The proposed localization algorithm improves the accuracy in the multiple agent localization system. The algorithm uses the displacement conditions of the mobile agents and the recognition changes between the RFID tags and RFID reader. Through experiments using a real platform, the usefulness of the proposed system is verified. 展开更多

Spatio-temporal variability and dynamics in Sahelian agro-pastoral zones make each local situation a special case. These specificities must be considered to guide the dissemination of agricultural options with a view to sustainable development. The territorial scale of municipalities is not sufficient for this necessary contextualization;the scale of the “village terroir” seems to be a better option. This is the hypothesis we put forward in the framework of the Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems program (CRFS), i.e. local context is spatially defined by village terroir. The study is based on data collected through participatory mapping and surveys in “village terroirs” in three regions of Niger (Maradi, Dosso and Tillabéri). Then the links between farm managers and their cultivated land, as well as the spatio-temporal dynamics of local context are analyzed. This study provides evidence of the existence and functional usefulness of the village terroir for farmers, their land management and their activities. It demonstrates the usefulness of contextualizing agricultural options at this scale. Their analysis elucidates the links between “terroirs village” and the specific functioning of the agrosocio-ecosystems acting on each of them, thus laying the systemic and geographical foundations for a model of the spatio- temporal dynamics of “village terroirs”. CD93 and GAIP-interacting protein, C termius (GIPC) have been shown to interactively alter phagocytic processes of immune cells. CD93 and GIPC expression and localization during cen-tral nervous system inflammation have not yet been reported. In this study, we established a rat model of brain inlfammation by lipopolysaccharide injection to the lateral ventricle. In the brain of rats with inlfammation, western blots showed increased CD93 expression that decreased over time. GIPC expression was unaltered. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated extensive distribution of CD93 expression mainly in cell membranes in the cerebral cortex. After lipopoly-saccharide stimulation, CD93 expression increased and then reduced, with distinct staining in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Double immunolfuorescence staining in cerebral cortex of normal rats showed that CD93 and GIPC widely expressed in resting microglia and neurons. CD93 was mainly expressed in microglial and neuronal cell membranes, while GIPC was expressed in both cell membrane and cytoplasm. In the cerebral cortex at 9 hours after model establishment, CD93-immunoreactive signal diminished in microglial membrane, with cytoplasmic transloca-tion and aggregation detected. GIPC localization was unaltered in neurons and microglia. These results are the ifrst to demonstrate CD93 participation in pathophysiological processes of central nervous system inlfammation. 展开更多

Investigating local dynamics of equilibrium points of nonlinear systems plays an important role in studying the behavior of dynamical systems. There are many different definitions for stable and unstable solutions in the literature. The main goal to develop stability definitions is exploring the responses or output of a system to perturbation as time approaches infinity. Due to the wide range of application of local dynamical system theory in physics, biology, economics and social science, it still attracts many researchers to play with its definitions to find out the answers for their questions. In this paper, we start with a brief review over continuous time dynamical systems modeling and then we bring useful examples to the playground. We study the local dynamics of some interesting systems and we show the local stable behavior of the system around its critical points. Moreover, we look at local dynamical behavior of famous dynamical systems, Hénon-Heiles system, Duffing oscillator and Van der Pol equation and analyze them. Finally, we discuss about the chaotic behavior of Hamiltonian systems using two different and new examples. 展开更多
