Long span ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines have serious aeolian vibration problems. To control these vibrations,we improved the energy balance method in the following aspects:the wind power input,the conductor self-damping,and the damper dissipated power. Meanwhile,we built a theoretical mechanical model of β wire dampers and derived energy dissipation calculation formulae. This permits the vibration energy dissipated by β wire dampers can be considered in the energy balance method. Then,we developed a computer program based on the improved energy balance method using Matlab,and analyzed UHV long span ground wires of the Han River long span project in P. R. China. The results show that the combination of β wire dampers and Stockbridge dampers can reduce vibration of UHV long span transmission lines,which provides a reference for research and construction of UHV engineering projects. 展开更多

This paper proposes a hybrid submodule modular multilevel converter(MMC)topology which is suitable for multi terminal direct current(MTDC)transmission systems.Each arm of the proposed MMC topology consists of a half-bridge submodule(HBSM)branch and two parallel full-bridge submodule(FBSM)branches.Comparing with the conventional MTDC transmission system,the proposed topology can selectively block the DC fault current and isolate the corresponding fault line without expensive DC circuit breakers(DCCBs).Thus,the influence range of the DC fault can be reduced and the reliability of the power supply can be improved as well.The corresponding modulation and voltage balancing strategies are developed for the proposed hybrid MMC topology.The feasibility of the proposed topology and control strategy is verified in the MATLAB/Simulink simulation. 展开更多

The lower bainitic carbides precipitation in 40CrMnSiMoV steel previously austempered at 310℃ was observed in situ by employing a high temperature stage of an ultra high voltage TEM(JEM-1000).The typical lower bamitic carbides were found to have precipitated from within the carbide-free bainitic ferrite after tempering for certain period at a temperature higher than that of the isothermal transformation.This revealed that the lower bainitic ferrite is supersaturated with carbon to some extent.The carbide may also precipitate from austenite, but they have no typical morphological features of lower bainitic carbide. 展开更多

Second, to provide a bridge between the power systems and the power electronic communities, in terms of their differing appreciation of how these devices perform when connected to the power grid. Third, to discuss on the role that the power electronics technology will play in supporting the aims and objectives of future decarbonized power systems. This paper merges the equipment, control techniques and methods used in flexible alternating current transmission systems(FACTS) and high voltage direct transmission(HVDC) equipment to enable a single, coherent approach to address a specific power system problem, using ‘best of breed’ solutions bearing in mind technical, economic and environmental issues. 展开更多

Identification and classification of DC faults are considered as fundamentals of DC grid protection.A sudden rise of DC fault current must be identified and classified to immediately operate the corresponding interrupting mechanism.In this paper,the Boltzmann machine learning(BML)approach is proposed for identification and classification of DC faults using travelling waves generated at fault point in voltage source converter based high-voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC)transmission system.An unsupervised way of feature extraction is performed on the frequency spectrum of the travelling waves.Binomial class logistic regression(BCLR)classifies the HVDC transmission system into faulty and healthy states.The proposed technique reduces the time for fault identification and classification because of reduced tagged data with few characteristics.Therefore,the faults near or at converter stations are readily identified and classified.The performance of the proposed technique is assessed via simulations developed in MATLAB/Simulink and tested for pre-fault and post-fault data both at VSC1 and VSC2,respectively.Moreover,the proposed technique is supported by analyzing the root mean square error to show practicality and realization with reduced computations. 展开更多

Modular multilevel converter(MMC)is increasingly being applied to high voltage direct current(HVDC)systems.However,dc short circuit situations restrain the application of a conventional half bridge MMC system.In this paper,a new sub-module topology with inserted thyristor can help the MMC system clear a dc side fault.Working states and devices voltage stress of the proposed topology are analyzed and the conduction loss comparison between the proposed topology with several existing topologies with dc fault blocking capability is carried out.Results show the proposed topology is superior to other topologies in terms of conduction loss while using the same voltage rating devices.Besides,compared with traditional half bridge topology,only thyristors and diodes are added in the proposed topology.Therefore,cost of the proposed topology can be lower than conventional hybrid MMC sub-modules.At last,the fault blocking capability of the proposed topology is verified in the simulation. 展开更多

This paper proposes a simple and fast way to determine the direction of a fault in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current(HVDC) grid by comparing the rate of change of voltage(ROCOV) values at either side of the di/dt limiting inductors at the line terminals. A local measurement based secure and fast protection method is implemented by supervising a basic ROCOV relay with a directional element. This directional information is also used to develop a slower communication based DC line protection scheme for detecting high resistance faults. The proposed protection scheme is applied to a multi-level modular converter based three-terminal HVDC grid and its security and sensitivity are evaluated through electromagnetic transient simulations. A methodology to set the protection thresholds considering the constraints imposed by the breaker technology and communication delays is also presented. With properly designed di/dt limiting inductors,the ability of clearing any DC transmission system fault before fault currents exceeds a given breaker capacity is demonstrated. 展开更多

Influence of the prestressed layer on spherical transducer in sound radiation performance

To improve the acoustic radiation performance of the spherical transducer,a prestressed layer is formed in the transducer through fiber winding.The influence of the prestressed layer on the transducer is studied from the effects of the radial prestress(Tr)and acoustic impedance,respectively.First,a theoretical estimation of Tr is established with a thin shell approximation of the prestressed layer.Then,the acoustic impedance is measured to evaluate the efficiency of sound energy transmission within the prestressed layer.Further,the ideal effects of Tr on the sound radiation performances of the transducer are analyzed through finite element analysis(FEA).Finally,four spherical transducers are fabricated and tested to investigate their dependence of actual properties on the prestressed layer.The results show that with the growth of Tr,the acoustic impedance of the prestressed layer grows,mitigating the enormous impedance mismatch between the piezoelectric ceramic and water,while increasing attenuation of the acoustic energy,resulting in a peak value of the maximum transmitting voltage response(TVRmax)at 1.18 MPa.The maximum drive voltage increases with Tr,leading to a steady growth of the maximum transmitting sound level(SLmax),with a noticeable ascend of 3.9 dB at a 3.44 MPa Tr.This is a strong credibility that the prestressed layer could improve the sound radiation perfor­mance of the spherical transducer. 展开更多
