Characteristics of Temperature Change in China over the Last 2000 years and Spatial Patterns of Dryness/Wetness during Cold and Warm Periods 被引量:10

This paper presents new high-resolution proxies and paleoclimatic reconstructions for studying climate changes in China for the past 2000 years. Multi-proxy synthesized reconstructions show that temperature variation in China has exhibited significant 50–70-yr, 100–120-yr, and 200–250-yr cycles. Results also show that the amplitudes of decadal and centennial temperature variation were 1.3℃ and 0.7℃, respectively, with the latter significantly correlated with long-term changes in solar radiation, especially cold periods, which correspond approximately to sunspot minima. The most rapid warming in China occurred over AD 1870–2000, at a rate of 0.56°± 0.42℃(100 yr)^(-1); however, temperatures recorded in the 20 th century may not be unprecedented for the last 2000 years, as data show records for the periods AD 981–1100 and AD1201–70 are comparable to the present. The ensemble means of dryness/wetness spatial patterns in eastern China across all centennial warm periods illustrate a tripole pattern: dry south of 25°N, wet from 25°–30°N, and dry to the north of 30°N. However, for all centennial cold periods, this spatial pattern also exhibits a meridional distribution. The increase in precipitation over the monsoonal regions of China associated with the 20 th century warming can primarily be attributed to a mega El Nino–Southern Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. In addition, a significant association between increasing numbers of locusts and dry/cold conditions is found in eastern China. Plague intensity also generally increases in concert with wetness in northern China, while more precipitation is likely to have a negative effect in southern China. 展开更多

Anticancer Effects of 5-Fluorouracil Combined with Warming and Relieving Cold Phlegm Formula on Human Breast Cancer 被引量:3

Objective: To investigate the anticancer effects of warming and relieving cold phlegm formula (温化寒痰复方, WRCP), a Chinese medical mixture composed of the aqueous extracts of Aconitum carmichaeli, Rhizoma bolbostemmatis, Phytolacca acinosa, Panax notoginseng, and Gekko swinhonis G u enther, combined with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on human breast cancer in vivo. Methods: Seventy-two Nu/Nu mica inoculated with MDAMB-231 breast cancer cells were randomized into the control group, 5-FU group, high-dose WRCP (hWRCP) group, medium-dose WRCP (mWRCP) group, low-dose WRCP (IWRCP) group, or combination of mWRCP and 5-FU group in a 1:1:1:1:1:1 ratio. Drug administration was commenced on the day following tumor implantation. The control group was injected daily with normal saline (N.S.) intraperitoneally; the 5-FU group was injected with 5-FU at 30 mg/kg intraperitoneally every third day for a total of 7 treatments; the hWRCP group, mWRCP group and IWRCP group received daily doses of 5, 1, and 0.2 g/kg of WRCP, respectively, by gastric perfusion; and the combination group was treated with 5-FU plus mWRCP on the same schedules as above. All treatments lasted for 22 days. Tumor volume, tumor weight, inhibition rate of tumor weight, necrosis rate of tumor, organ index, and change in body weight of nude mice were measured. Results: The combination group and the hWRCP group had significantly smaller tumor volumes (580 ±339 mm3 and 587 ± 249 mm3 versus 1055 ± 234 mm3, respectively), lower tumor weights (0.42 ± 0.29 g and 0.52 ± 0.29 g versus 0.80 ± 0.15 g, respectively), and higher tumor necrosis rates (22.7% and 25.6% versus 9.4%, respectively) as compared with the control group (all P〈0.05). Similar changes were found in the 5-FU, mWRCP, and IWRCP groups when compared with the control group but were not statistically significant, except for the tumor weight for the 5-FU group. The combination group and the hWRCP group had significantly smaller tumor volumes compared with the 5-FU group (778 ± 202 mm3, both P〈0.05). The combination group had the highest tumor inhibition rate (47.7%), followed by the hWRCP group (35.2%) and 5-FU group (28.3%). The 5-FU group had a lower body weight increase (1.37± 2.06 g versus 5.60± 0.72 g, P〈0.05) and a lower spleen index (4.064 ± 1.774 rag/10 g versus 5.294 ± 1.796 mg/10 g) as compared with the control group, whereas the combination group reversed the changes in the 5-FU group with the body weight increase of 3.52 ± 1.80 g (P〈0.05) and spleen index of 7.036 ± 1.599 mg/10 g (P〈0.05). The spleen indices in the hWRCP, mWRCP, and IWRCP group were all significantly higher than that in the 5-FU group (P〈0.01 or P〈0.05). No significant differences in body weight change were observed in WRCP groups compared with the control group (P〉0.05). Conclusioa: The treatment combination of WRCP and 5-FU was more effective in the inhibition of tumor growth than either agent alone and may have potentially additional benefit in improving the general condition and immunity of the mice with human breast cancer cell implants. In order to study the thermal and moisture comfort properties of down jacket fabrics,20 popular down jacket fabrics were selected from the market.The basic specifications of the samples were tested,and thermal and moisture performance tests were conducted.The obtained thermal and moisture indicators were analyzed,and then combined with the subjective evaluation results to obtain the regression equation for the evaluation of the comprehensive thermal and moisture comfort of down jacket fabrics.The air permeability,the thermal resistance,the warm and cold feeling and the moisture permeability were tested,and the results were divided into 5 levels.The results showed that the consistency of the air permeability and the moisture permeability of down jacket fabrics studied was better,and the thermal insulation of the down jacket fabrics with coating was better.The thickness of the down jacket fabrics had an effect on the warm and cold feeling of instant contact,and the consistency of subjective and objective warm and cold feeling was better.The obtained comprehensive evaluation equation of the thermal and moisture comfort has certain guiding significance for the thermal and moisture comfort of down jacket fabrics. 展开更多

Identifying hot spots of long-duration extreme climate events in the northwest arid region of China and implications for glaciers and runoff

China’s Northwest Arid Region(NAR),with dry and cold climate conditions and glaciers widely developed in the high mountains,provides vital water resources for Asia.The consecutive cold,warm,dry and wet days have much higher impacts on the water cycle process in this region than extreme temperature and precipitation events with short durations but high intensities.Parametric and nonparametric trend analysis methods widely used in climatology and hydrology are employed to identify the temporal and spatial features of the changes in the consecutive cold,warm,dry and wet days in the NAR based on China’s 0.5°×0.5°meteorological grid datasets of daily temperature and precipitation from 1961 to 2018.This study found that(1)the consecutive cold days(Cold Spell Duration Indicator,CSDI),and the consecutive dry days(CDD)decreased,while the consecutive warm days(Warm Spell Duration Indicator,WSDI),and the consecutive wet days(CWD)increased from 1961 to 2018,(2)and the eastern Kunlun Mountains were the hot spots where all of these consecutive climate indices changed significantly,(3)and the changes in these consecutive climate indices were highly correlated with the rise in the Global Mean Land/Ocean Temperature Index.The results indicated that winters tended to warmer and dryer and summer became hotter and wetter during 1961–2018 in the NAR under the global warming,which can lead to the sustained glacier retreat and the increase in summer runoff in this region,and the eastern Kunlun Mountains are the area where could face high risks of water scarcity and floods if the changes in these climate indices continue in the future.Given the vulnerability of the socio-economic systems in the NAR to a water shortage and floods,it is most crucial to improve the strategies of water resources management,disaster prevention and risk management for this region under climate change. 展开更多

The present mega cold period commenced... The climate of the Earth has been oscillating between mega warm periods and mega cold periods for 3,000 Ma. Each mega cold period included alternating major warm and cold events. The present mega cold period commenced about 44 Ma in the polar re- gions as the seas cooled following the loss of the circum-equatorial ocean. Before then, a mega warm period lasted for more than 200 Ma. The frequency of the major cold events within the present mega cold period is increasing, with each continent being un- der the influence of a different set of climatic controls. There are many causes of these shifts in climate, ranging from fluctuating meridional ocean currents, rearrangement of tectonic plates, and changes in ocean gateways. These are enhanced by a combination of Milankovitch cycles and many other medium to small oscillations and cyclic controls that cause the daily, monthly, and season- al fluctuations in weather. Examples are given of how these can cause a change from cold to warm events, or vice versa, at pre- sent-day or mega scales, aided by eustatic changes in sea levels and changes in the distribution of air masses, sea ice, and snow. 展开更多

Whether Arctic sea-ice loss has significant impacts on climate extremes in mid-and high-latitudes remains uncertain.Here we show the full response of cold and warm extremes under two Arctic sea-ice loss scenarios utilizing a coupled global climate model that permits the air-sea coupling.Our results show that the amount of Arctic sea-ice loss determines the spatial extent and magnitude of the weakening of atmospheric circulation in mid-and high-latitudes of the northern hemisphere,leading to nonlinear changes in cold and warm extremes.A relatively localized and moderate weakening of atmospheric circulation induced by the projected sea-ice loss in the next two decades would contribute to less winter cold extremes over the Northern Hemispheric continents.The risks of winter cold spells would be dramatically reduced as the amount of sea-ice loss is increased to the ice-free state.In contrast,as sea-ice loss increases,the continental regions would have increased risk of heat waves over all mid-and high-latitudes. 展开更多

Tissue samples were taken from the right atrium before weaning from CPB and from the right appendage 30 minutes after removal of the cross-clamp. PROCESS OF TRANSITION BETWEEN COLD AND WARM PERIODS AND ITS PREDICTION

The oscillation of multi-time scales and the process of transition between cold and warm periods over most parts of China and its 6 regions (the Northeast,North China,Changjiang River Valley,South China,the Southwest,the Northwest) were analyzed with wavelet transformation and by computing the variances of the wavelet components for the temperature grade series during January 191I to February 2001,The prediction model for cold and warm periods has been developed and the trend of cold and warm change in the coming 10 years is predicted.The results show that the oscillation with periods of around 30-40 years was the strongest in the last 100 years and the 3-year oscillation in both winter and summer was also stronger,especially in winter. The transition time of cold and warm periods in terms of winter mean did not coincide with that of annual mean,but the difference between summer mean and annual mean is less.The processes of transition of 6 regions are somewhat different,their main characteristics are that the beginning year of significant warming for 1980s to 1990s was very different for the southern and the northern part of China.It is found that the stronger oscillation with 3-year period causes cooling in Northeast China in recent several winters.The experimental predictions show that the models used in the paper can project the major transition between high and low temperature periods. 展开更多

The main conclusions are as follows:(1)air-sea coupling patterns at the mature stage of El Nino(La Nina)are main spatial ones of tropical Pacific SSWA and SSTA coupling:(2)at the mature stage of El Nino,the interaction of the anticyclonic anomaly wind,generated by the forcing of distinct meridional SSTA gradient in the Northern Hemisphere tropical central Pacific.with the California cold current and SSTA is mainly responsible for weakening of El Nino;(3)the second sea temperature increase along the South American coast in the decaying course of El Nino results from the eastward movement of the weakened positive SSTA in the tropical central-eastern Pacific forced by anomalous west wind stress:(4)La Nina results from the joint effect of Walker circulation,Ekman drift and negative SSTA in the tropical central-eastern Pacific. 展开更多

In this paper,main characteristics of the long-lasting freezing rain and snowstorm event in southern China at the beginning of 2008,features of the related atmospheric circulation and the causes thereof are analyzed.During the event,patterns of the atmospheric circulation stayed stable;the polar vortex located in the northern part of the Eastern Hemisphere was strong with little movement;the cold front from the polar region and the active warm air mass from the tropical ocean confronted each other for a long time;the blocking high to the west of Baikal remained strong and steady;the trough over central and western Asia maintained its position for quite long with a group of little troughs splitting from it frequently;the dominant wind at 700 hPa was southwesterly while shears and vortexes at 850 hPa developed continually,providing the necessary low-level convergence for subsequent precipitation.Meanwhile,in the mid troposphere,eddies were generated over the Tibetan Plateau and positive vorticity disturbances in the Sichuan Basin propagated eastward to the coastal regions of eastern China.The western Pacific subtropical high was intensive with westward and northward migrations.The subtropical frontal zone was puissant and the north-south temperature gradient was large.Quasi-stationary fronts over South China and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau remained stable.Warm air masses over the tropical ocean were active,so was the trough in the southern branch of the westerlies over the Bay of Bengal.There were four episodes associated with this event.The first one was featured with the interaction of strong cold and warm air,while the other three with the quasi-stationary fronts over South China and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau as well as vigorous penetration of cold air from the north.The existence of the inversion layer and the thick melting layer were one of the main reasons for the long-lasting freezing rains.The main reason for the snowstorms was that the positive vorticity over the Sichuan Basin propagated eastward to the coastal regions of eastern China.Abundant water vapor and intense updraft also favored the heavy snows. 展开更多

Aims The physiological responses during dormancy removal and multi-phasic germination were investigated in seeds of Paeonia corsica(Paeoniaceae).Methods Seeds of P.corsica were incubated in the light at a range of temperatures(10-25 and 25/10℃),without any pre-treatment,after W(3 months at 25℃),C(3 months at 5℃)and W+C(3 months at 25℃followed by 3 months at 5℃)stratification,and a GA_(3)treatment(250 mg·l^(−1)in the germination substrate).Embryo growth,time from testa to endosperm rupture and radicle emergence were assessed as separate phases.Epicotyl-plumule emergence was evaluated incubating the germinated seeds at 15℃for 2 weeks,at 5 and 25℃for 2 months on agar water before transplanting to the soil substrate at 10,15 and 20℃and at 15℃for 2 months on the surface agar water with GA_(3).Important Findings Embryo growth,testa rupture,endosperm rupture(radicle emergence)and growth of the epicotyl were identified as four sequential steps in seeds of P.corsica.Gibberellic acid alone and warm stratification followed by 15℃promoted embryo growth and subsequent seed germination.Cold stratification induced secondary dormancy,even when applied after warm stratification.After radicle emergence,epicotyl-plumule emergence was delayed for ca.3 months.Mean time of epicotyl-plumule emergence was positively affected by cold stratification(2 months at 5℃)and GA_(3).P.corsica seeds exhibited differential temperature sensitivity for the four sequential steps in the removal of dormancy and germination processes that resulted in the precise and optimal timing of seedling emergence. 展开更多
