Despite the success of guided wave ultrasonic inspection for internal defect detection in steel pipes,its application on polyethylene(PE)pipe remains relatively unexplored.The growth of internal cracks in PE pipe severely affects its pressure-holding capacity,hence the early detection of internal cracks is crucial for effective pipeline maintenance strategies.This study extends the scope of guided wave-based ultrasonic testing to detect the growth of internal cracks in a natural gas distribution PE pipe.Laboratory experiments and a finite element model were planned to study the wave-crack interaction at different stages of axially oriented internal crack growth with a piezoceramic transducer-based setup arranged in a pitch-catch configuration.Mode dispersion analysis supplemented with preliminary experiments was performed to isolate the optimal inspection frequency,leading to the selection of the T(0,1)mode at 50-kHz for the investigation.A transmission index based on the energy of the T(0,1)mode was developed to trace the extent of simulated crack growth.The findings revealed an inverse linear correlation between the transmission index and the crack depth for crack growth beyond 20%crack depth. 展开更多

A frequency domain analysis method based on the three-dimensional translating-pulsating (3DTP) source Green function is developed to investigate wave loads and free motions of two ships advancing on parallel course in waves. Two experiments are carried out respectively to mea- sure the wave loads and the free motions for a pair of side-by- side arranged ship models advancing with an identical speed in head regular waves. For comparison, each model is also tested alone. Predictions obtained by the present solution are found in favorable agreement with the model tests and are more accurate than the traditional method based on the three dimensional pulsating (3DP) source Green function. Numer- ical resonances and peak shift can be found in the 3DP pre- dictions, which result from the wave energy trapped in the gap between two ships and the extremely inhomogeneous wave load distribution on each hull. However, they can be eliminated by 3DTP, in which the speed affects the free sur- face and most of the wave energy can be escaped from the gap. Both the experiment and the present prediction show that hydrodynamic interaction effects on wave loads and free motions are significant. The present solver may serve as a validated tool to predict wave loads and motions of two ves- sels under replenishment at sea, and may help to evaluate the hydrodynamic interaction effects on the ships safety in replenishment operation. 展开更多

In order to correct the test error caused by the dynamic characteristics of pressure sensor and avoid the influence of the error of sensor's dynamic model on compensation results,a dynamic compensation method of the pressure sensor is presented,which is based on quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization(QPSO)algorithm and the mean square error(MSE).By using this method,the inverse model of the sensor is built and optimized and then the coefficients of the optimal compensator are got.This method is verified by the dynamic calibration with shock tube and the dynamic characteristics of the sensor before and after compensation are analyzed in time domain and frequency domain.The results show that the working bandwidth of the sensor is extended effectively.This method can reduce dynamic measuring error and improve test accuracy in actual measurement experiments. 展开更多

With the development of numerical weather prediction technology, the traditional global hydrostatic models used in many countries of the world for operational weather forecasting and numerical simulations of general c... With the development of numerical weather prediction technology, the traditional global hydrostatic models used in many countries of the world for operational weather forecasting and numerical simulations of general circulation have become more and more unfit for high-impact weather prediction. To address this, it is important to invest in the development of global nonhydrostatic models. Few existing nonhydrostatic global models use consistently the grid finite difference scheme for the primitive equations of dynamical cores, which can subsequently degrade the accuracy of the calculations. A new nonhydrostatic global spectral model, which utilizes the Eulerian spectral method, is developed here from NCAR Community Atmosphere Model 3.0 (CAM3.0). Using Janjic's hydrostatic/nonhydrostatic method, a global nonhydrostatic spectral method for the primitive equations has been formulated and developed. In order to retain the integrity of the nonhydrostatic equations, the atmospheric curvature correction and eccentricity correction are considered. In this paper, the Held-Suarez idealized test and an idealized baroclinic wave test are first carried out, which shows that the nonhydrostatic global spectral model has similar climate states to the results of many other global models for long-term idealized integration, as well as better simulation ability for short-term idealized integration. Then, a real case experiment is conducted using the new dynamical core with the full physical parameterizations of subgrid-scale physical processes. The 10-day numerical integration indicates a decrease in systematic error and a better simulation of zonal wind, temperature, and 500-hPa height. 展开更多

Quasi-static response was obtained at strain rates in the range of 10-3s-1to 25 s-1. Characterization of the response at even greater strain rates is accomplished by measuring the spatio-temporal evolution of the particle velocity and strain in a thin strip subjected to high speed impact loading that generates uniaxial stress conditions. These experiments indicate the formation of shock waves; the shock Hugoniot that relates particle velocity to the shock velocity and the dynamic stress to dynamic strain is obtained directly through experimental measurements, without any assumptions regarding the constitutive properties of the material. 展开更多

No shale-rock physical model has been established in the observation coordinate system.To this end,this paper carried out anisotropic wave velocity tests on shale rock and compared the Thomsen,Daley,and Berryman solutions to characterize anisotropic acoustic wave velocity.Finally,the Daley solution was selected.Based on basic rock physical models,such as SCA and DEM methods,and combined with the Daley solution,an anisotropic shale-rock physical model was established in the observation coordinate system and applied in Well B1 in the Luzhou area,Sichuan Basin.Our research conclusions were as follows:1.for the samples from the same core,the P-wave velocities in three directions were in the order VP11>VP45>VP33,shear wave velocity VS11 was the largest,but VS33 and VS45 did not follow the law of Vs33>Vs45 for some samples;2.the Daley solution,which not only considers the accuracy requirements but also has a complete expression of P-,SV-,and SH-waves,is most suitable for characterization of anisotropic wave velocity in this study area;3.the rock physical model constructed in the observation coordinate system has high accuracy,in which the absolute value of the relative error of the P-wave slowness was between 0%and 5.05%(0.55%on average),and that of shear-wave slowness was between 0%and 6.05%(0.59%on average);4.the acoustic waves recorded in Well B1 in the observation coordinate system were very different from those in the constitutive coordinate system.The relative difference of the P-wave was between 6.76%and 30.84%(14.68%on average),and that of the S-wave was between 7.00%and 23.44%(13.99%on average).The acoustic slowness measured in the observation coordinate system,such as in a deviated well or a horizontal well section,must be converted to the constitutive coordinate system before it can be used in subsequent engineering applications;5.the anisotropic shale-rock physical model built in the observation coordinate system proposed in this paper can provide basic data and guidance for subsequent pore pressure prediction,geomechanical modeling,and fracturing stimulation design for deviated and horizontal wells. 展开更多

The Asselin-Robert time filter used in the leapfrog scheme can degrade the accuracy of calculations.The second-order Adams-Bashforth method with the same accuracy as the leapfrog scheme is not subject to time splitting instability.A new semi-implicit atmospheric general circulation spectral model is developed on the basis of NCAR(National Center for Atmospheric Research)CAM3.0(Community Atmosphere Model 3.0).In this new model,the second-order Adams-Bashforth method is used as an alternative to the leapfrog scheme,and a Crank-Nicholson scheme is incorporated for the treatment of fast gravity modes.In this paper,the new model is tested by the Held-Suarez test and an idealized baroclinic wave test.Results of the Held-Suarez test show that the second-order Adams-Bashforth model has similar climate states to those of many other global models and it converges with resolutions.Based on the idealized baroclinic wave test,the capability of different time differencing methods for keeping the initial steady-state are compared. This convinces a better ability of the second-order Adams-Bashforth method in maintaining the stability of the initial state.Furthermore,after the baroclinic wave is triggered through overlaying the steady-state initial conditions with the zonal perturbation,the second-order Adams-Bashforth method has an excellent property of convergence,and can represent the process of the baroclinic wave development much better than the original scheme in CAM3.0.A long-term integration of the new model during the period of 1980–1999 is also carried out and compared with that of CAM3.0.It is found that due to the reduction of simulation errors of prognostic variables,the second-order Adams-Bashforth method also has a better simulation ability for the diagnostic variables,such as precipitation. 展开更多

According to site investigation drilling, sampling, seismic sound logging wave test in single-hole and cross-hole, laboratory wave velocity test of intact rock, together with analysis of the site geological conditions, the seismic wave test results of the site between strata lithology and the geologic structure were studied. The relationships of seismic waves with the site lithology and the geologic structure were set up. The dynamic parameters of different grades of weathering profile were deduced. A new kind of room temperature vulcanized silicone elastomer as wedge material, in which ultrasound can propagate in very low speed with weak attenuation, is developed through a great deal of trials. The immersed tunnel is considered an effective solution for traffic problems across rivers and seas.The sand filling layer,as an important part of immersed tunnel foundation treatments,directly affects segment attitude stability.Due to difficulties in quality control of concealed construction and the complex hydrodynamic environment,the sand filling layer is prone to compaction defects,further leading to changes in segment attitude.However,limited by structural concealment and state complexity,most studies consider the sand filling layer part of the foundation to study its impact on settlement while neglecting its influence on segment attitude.This research proposes an evaluation method for the sand filling layer state based on elastic wave testing and the elastic wave characteristic parameters selected come from analysis of the time domain,frequency domain and time–frequency domain.By classifying the elastic wave characteristic parameters through the K-means clustering method,the relationship between the state of the sand filling layer and the elastic wave characteristic parameters is established.The state of the sand filling layer is divided into dense,incompact,and void.A numerical model is established based on the Guangzhou BI-UT immersed tunnel with incompact and void sand filling layer states to simulate deformation and torsion.The results indicate that the settlement of the tunnel segment is low in the eastern region and high in the western region due to the presence of a less dense sand filling layer,with a maximum differential settlement of 0.04 m.The evaluation method plays a crucial role in guiding the construction of immersed tube tunnels. 展开更多

In this paper,two smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)models,namely SPH-W and SPH-C were used to evaluate the motion response of a point absorber wave energy converter(WEC).In the SPH-W model,a long wave flume was constructed and a long simulation was performed to obtain the motion response of the WEC.In the SPH-C model,the SPH method is only used to find the hydrodynamic coefficients of the device by analysing a few seconds of free-decaying motion of WEC in calm water in a much smaller numerical flume.Then,these coefficients were inserted in the equation of motion of a heaving WEC that was solved using a 4th order Runge-Kutta(ODE45)solver in MATLAB.First,the energy conservation property of the WCSPH model was examined through a standing wave benchmark test.Then,the wavepoint absorber interaction was simulated.While the simulation time for SPH-C model is much smaller than that of SPH-W,it gave almost similar results for the motion response of WEC.These two models were used to evaluate the effects of the control force and the draft of a cone-cylinder point absorber on its hydrodynamic responses.The results showed that compared to the effect of the supplementary inertia,changes in the draft of the WEC have a small influence on its hydrodynamic responses.The buoy draft has an inverse relationship with both added mass and damping coefficients.However,increasing the supplementary mass increases the added mass and decreases the hydrodynamic damping coefficients. 展开更多

The Asselin-Robert time As an attractive alternative filter used in the leaptYog scheme does degrade the accuracy of calculations. to leapfrog time differencing, the second-order Adams-Bashforth method is not subject to time splitting instability and keeps excellent calculation accuracy. A second-order Adams- Bashforth model has been developed, which represents better stability, excellent convergence and improved simulation of prognostic variables. Based on these results, the higher-order Adams-Bashforth methods are developed on the basis of NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) CAM 3.1 (Community Atmosphere Model 3.1) and the characteristics of dynamical cores are analyzed in this paper. By using Lorenz nonlinear convective equations, the filtered leapfrog scheme shows an excellent pattern for eliminating 2At wave solutions after 20 steps but represents less computational solution accuracy. The fourth-order Adams- Bashforth method is closely converged to the exact solution and provides a reference against which other methods may be compared. Thus, the Adams-Bashforth methods produce more accurate and convergent solution with differencing order increasing. The Held-Suarez idealized test is carried out to demonstrate that all methods have similar climate states to the results of many other global models for long-term integration. Besides, higher-order methods perform better in mass conservation and exhibit improvement in simulating tropospheric westerly jets, which is likely equivalent to the advantages of increasing horizontal resolutions. Based on the idealized baroclinic wave test, a better capability of the higher-order method in maintaining simulation stability is convinced. Furthermore, after the baroclinic wave is triggered through overlaying the steady-state initial conditions with the zonal perturbation, the higher-order method has a better ability in the simulation of baroclinic wave perturbation. 展开更多

This study focuses on the influence of the wave surge force on the assessments of the surf-riding/broaching vulnerability criteria according to the new proposal of the IMO Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria. A code is developed for the criteria check and the sample ship calculations show that the accuracy of the wave surge force estimation has a significant influence on the assessment result. For further investigation, the wave surge force measurement through a captive model test is made for a purse seiner to validate the numerical model, the effects of the wave steepness and the ship forward speed on the wave surge force responses are also discussed. It is demonstrated that the diffraction effect is important for the correct estimation of the wave surge force. Therefore, it is recommended to include this effect in the assessment procedure. 展开更多

Comparative study of static and dynamic parameters of rock for the Xishan Rock Cliff Statue

Ultrasonic wave testing was applied to investigate the quality and weathering status of rock specimens obtained in two borings situated in the Xishan Buddha rock slope in Taiyuan, China. This paper pays special attention to the distribution of bulk density, dynamic parameters and static parameters of rock specimens as well as the relationship between static and dynamic parameters. The results illustrate that the distribution of both parameters is identical along the depth of two drilled holes in the rock slope. When the hole depth increases, the density of rock mass, saturated compression strength and static elastic modulus, dynamic elastic modulus and wave velocity also show increase tendency. The weathering degree in the rock mass ranging from the surface of cliff to the depth of 2.5 m is the highest while the rock mass is unsalted and more rigid when the depth is larger than 3.0 m. The relationship between dynamic elastic modulus, sonic wave velocity and horizontal depth indicates that dynamic elastic modulus is more sensitive than sonic wave velocity. Conversely, by comparing quantity relationship between static elastic modulus and sonic wave velocity, it is found that the composition of rock has a great influence on the relationship between static and dynamic parameters, that is, inequality of rock composition will lead to dispersion and abnormality of the distribution of static and dynamic parameters. 展开更多
