The Challenges of Road Construction in Zambia’s Western Province:A Case Study of the Mongu-Kalabo Road Project

Availability of good quality local construction materials is a major component of road construction as it contributes greatly to the cost of construction.Reserves of good quality construction material may be readily available in some parts of Zambia while in some parts like the Western Province,sources of suitable construction materials are scarce.The lack of suitable construction materials in Western Province has affected the construction,rehabilitation and maintenance of roads in this area as materials have to be hauled from distant sources to site.Plans to construct an all-weather road to ease the transport challenges and ensure development for the people of Western Province started as far back as 1966 but were first affected in 2002 when the first attempt to construct an all-weather paved road embankment across the flood plain was made.This paper discusses some of the challenges faced in road construction projects in Zambia’s Western Province,specifically focussing on the Mongu-Kalabo road construction project as a case study.The various challenges faced on this project include financing(high construction cost),challenging terrain(deep Kalahari sands and seasonal flooding)and lack of suitable road construction materials are discussed.The Government of the republic of Zambia has prioritised infrastructure development and has thus embarked on the construction of the 34 km of the Mongu-Kalabo Road Embankment which will include twenty-five bridges across the Barotse Flood Plain at a cost of US$286 million.The potential benefits of constructing the Mongu-Kalabo road to the people of Western Province and the country at large,which include opening up trade with neighbouring Angola,are also discussed. 展开更多

[Objective] This study was to evaluate the ecological suitability of agricultural land in western Jilin Province, with the aim to provide basis for the effective application of agricultural resources and the structural adjustment of land use. [Method] The evaluation index system was constructed based on fuzzy mathematic method according to the principles of systematic, dominant, effectiveness and feasibility; based on law of tolerance, reasonable evaluation criteria were determined according to the ecological amplitude of crops; based on GIS processing, the initial data completed the mathematical operation by using the VBA program in Excel. [Result] The area of agricultural land grade I was 5 512 km2, grade II of 25 985 km2, grade Ill of 7 907 km2, and area of land not suitable for agriculture was 6 312 km2. According to the evaluation results, the key areas for land use adjustment were Zhenlai County, Da'an County, Tongyu County and western Changling County. The directions of land use adjustment included improving irrigation and drainage conditions, governing land salinization and conversion of cropland to forest and grassland. [Conclusion] This study provided basis for the effective application of agricultural resources and ecological environment construction in western Jilin Province. 展开更多

The results showed that Decision Tree Model was convenient for extracting settlements information by integrating spectral and texture features, and the accuracy of such a method was higher than that of the traditional Maximum Liklihood Method, in addition, calculation methods of extracting settlements information by this mean were concluded. 展开更多

We herein describe a partial postcranial skeleton of a sauropod dinosaur recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group in the Beipiao area of western Liaoning Province, northeastern China. A suite of features it possesses, including the camellate internal structure of its presacral elements, the existence of pneumatocoels on the proximal ends of the dorsal ribs, and especially the medially deflected proximal portion of the femur, definitively establish the titanosauriform affinities of the specimen. It differs from other titanosauriforms in having a craniocaudally elongate coracoid with a squared cranioventral extreme and a long, smooth, and slightly convex acetabular edge of the pubis. It represents a new taxon, Dongbeititan dongi gen. et sp. nov. Comparative studies suggest that Dongbeititan is a basal titanosauriform, more derived than Euhelopus, Fusuisaurus, and Huanghetitan, but less derived than Gobititan and Jiutaisaurus. Dongbeititan represents the first sauropod dinosaur reported from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of western Liaoning Province. 展开更多

By establishing the interpreting elements, and applying supervised classification, the sandy desertific- ation was interpreted and the desertified land areas of the counties in the western Jilin Province in 1986 and in 2000 were obtained. Taking Tongyu and Qian’an as examples, the natural driving forces and man-made driving forces were analyzed. The paper comes the conclusions that the material sources and the warming and dry climate are the internal causes of potential land desertification; the irrational human activities, such as destroying forest and reclaiming the grassland, are the external causes of potential land desertification; while more rational human activities, such as planting trees and restoring grassland can reverse the land desertification. Furthermore, the countermeasures and suggestions for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry in the western Jilin Province are put forward. 展开更多

The geological corridor of Western Liaoning province is an area of length 100 km and width 20 km and located in the eastern segment of northern margin of North China Craton(NCC),with the wide distribution of Mesozoic granitic magmatism.It is the ideal area to study the granitic petrogenesis,the nature of magma source and the tectonic attribute.In this paper,we do the systematic researchesaboutthepetrology,geochronology,geochemistry and Zircon Hf isotopic of granitic rocks.Based on the mentioned above,we have built the geochronological framework and have discussed the petrogenesis,the nature of magma source and the tectonic setting of granitic rocks.And according to the information about the crust-mantle interaction recorded in granitic rocks and the regional data,we also discuss the relationship between Mesozoic granitic magma activities and lithosphere thinning,destruction of Craton mechanism in the eastern segment of northern margin of NCC.The Mesozoic granitic magma activities in The geological corridor of Western Liaoning province are divided into four stages(Fig.1):Late Triassic(230 Ma;28 Ma),early-middle Jurassic(194 Ma;69 Ma),Late Jurassic(161 Ma;55 Ma)and Early Cretaceous(139Ma;21 Ma).The late Triassic granitic rocks are composed of adamellite,monzogranite and diorite.The samples have high Sr,Cr,Ni content and low Yb,Y content,and the sample have high Mg#and high ratio of Sr/Y and La/Yb.The characteristics of inhomogenous negative value ofεHf(t)(-6.40;0.19)in magmatic zircons and ancient crustal TDM2 values of 1.25 Ga;.67 Ga(Fig.2),indicate that the Triassic granitic rocks were formed in a post-collisional extensional tectonic setting aftersubduction of Paleo-Asian Ocean and the subduction of Yangtze Craton,and they are the product of partial melting of ancient lower crust under the condition of the mantle-derived magma underplating,and geochemical features of the high Sr and low Y are inherited from the source of magma which is also enriched in Sr and depleted in Y.The geochemical features and assemblages of rocks formed during Jurassic-early Cretaceous are similar.The early-middle Jurassic granitic rocks are composed of syenogranite,monzogranite,quartz monzonite,granitic porphyry,granodiorite and quartz diorite.The late Jurassic granitic rocks are composed of monzogranite,granitic porphyry,and quartz diorite.The early Cretaceous granitic rocks are composed of monzogranite,quartz syenite,granitic porphyry,and quartz monzodiorite.The samples are characterized by the high SiO;content and total alkalis and are belonged to the high-K calc-alkaline series.And the characteristics of quasi-aluminous to weakly peraluminous(A/CNK<1.1,A/NK>1.0)and the negative relationship between P;O;and SiO;are similar to the characteristics of I-type granite.The samples are enriched in LREE contents and K,Pb and depleted in Nb,Ta,Ti and P.The characteristics of assemblage and geochemical features indicate the Jurassic-Cretaceous granitic rocks formed in the setting of active continental margin related to the subduction.The magmatic zircons of early-middle Jurassic granitic rocks have negativeεHf(t)(-16.60;4.15)and ancient crustal TDM2 values of 1.49 Ga;.28 Ga which indicates the primary magma is from the partial melting of ancient middle-lower crust(Fig.2).These rocks formed in the setting of active continental margin of subduction of Paleo-Pacific plate.The magma source of granitic rocks is from partial melting of the ancient lower-middle curst caused by the underplating of mantle magma,which formed in the condition of fluid derived from the dehydration of subducted slab affected on the lithosphere mantle.The magmatic zircons of late Jurassic granitic rocks have negativeεHf(t)(-26.24;18.56)and ancient crustal TDM2 values of(2.39 Ga;.87 Ga)which indicates the primary magma is from the partial melting of ancient upper-middle crust(Fig.2).And these rocks may be formed in the setting of active continental margin of intense subduction of Paleo-Pacific plate.In the intense subduction,the mantle magma is formed in the interaction of fluid derived from the dehydration of subducted slab with the lithosphere mantle,then further underplated the ancient middle-upper crust and make the ancient middle-upper curst partial melting.In this setting,the late Jurassic rocks are distributed widely in eastern North China.The samples in early Cretaceous have a wide range of values of Hf isotope:-24.92;20.88(139 Ma),-4.72;6.22(130 Ma),-17.30;11.56(125 Ma;21 Ma),and the characteristics of Hf isotope indicate the source of earlyCretaceousmagma(middle-uppercrust,middle-lower crust or juvenile crust)is very complicated(Fig.2).The early Cretaceous granitic rocks were formed in the lithosphere extensional environment when the Paleo-Pacific plate subducted/roll-backed quickly in the direction of NNW with high angle.The regional extension made the asthenosphere upwell and be unstable,and the magma of mantle was formed.Then wide mantle-crust interactions make the crust partial melt,as a result,the source of early Cretaceous igneous rocks which are distributed widely in eastern North China Craton.The participation of depleted mantle components in the process of Late Triassic rock formation in western Liaoning area indicate the time of the lithosphere thinning in the eastern segment of northern margin of NCC begin from the late Triassic(;30 Ma).The double subduction of Paleo-Asian Ocean and Yangtze Craton in the early period is the reason of the lithosphere thinning.After the double subduction,the mantle-derived magma upwell and underplate the lithosphere mantle and lower crust in a post-collisional extensional tectonic setting.As a result,the lithosphere began to thin but the Craton destruction was not obviously in this period.The participation of depleted mantle components makes the continental crust slightly reforms and grows.The eastern segment of northern margin of NCC was in the setting of active continental margin in Jurassic,and the continuing dehydration and metasomatism of subduction slab changed the physical and chemical properties of the lithosphere mantle.The initial weak subduction in early-middle Jurassic makes the lithosphere become thin but no obvious destruction of Craton.And in this period,the continental crust reformed and grew slightly.As the subduction became stronger during late Jurassic,the thickness of lithosphere in eastern segment of northern margin of NCC become thinner and the destruction of Craton occurred locally and the continental crust reformed and grew to some extent.In early Cretaceous,the change of direction and angle of subduction of Paleo-Pacific led to the regional extension,which is the reason for massive mantle material upwelling and intense crust-mantle interaction.And the lithosphere thinning and destruction of Craton reached the peak.As a result,the effects of reconstruction and hyperplasia of continental crust are obviously.In our opinions,the underplating mechanism of mantle-derived magma occurred mainly in the initial stage(early Mesozoic)oflithosphere thinning,and the delamination of lithosphere mantle or lower crust coexisted while erosion action of mantle material occurred in the stage(late Mesozoic)of strong lithosphere thinning and destruction of Craton. 展开更多

By the use of the software of ARCGIS, dynamic changes of the landscape elements, landscape structure, conversion processes of the landscape gradients and the responses of wetland eco-security to land use/cover changes (LUCC) in the western Jilin Province were studied from 1930 to 2000. The results show that the landscape elements of grassland, wetland, forestland and water area shrank rapidly, and wetlands underwent huge losses in the study period due to the conversion from wetland into arable land and grassland in large quantities. The responses of wetland eco-security to LUCC were inverse evolvement of wetland vegetation, loss of biodiversity, water deficiency in wetland ecosystem, the changes of the heterogeneity of wetlands and the fragmentation of the wetland habitats. Suggestions were given for protection of wetlands and the regional sustainable development. 展开更多

It shows that in two points: in the north 27.64 km from shot point Jinggu and south 58.74 km from shot point Zhiti, there are transition zones of group of thin layers with inverse velocity.These two reflection points are both situated in the lower velocity anomaly zone in the top of upper mantle. The crust of this region is more seismicity. Maybe the unusual structure of this transition zone is related with the characteristics of this region. This paper discusses the possible geological interpretation model for this transition zone, and also makes suggestion about its application in earthquake prediction. 展开更多

Analysis of a Continuative Fog Event in Western Shandong Province

[Objective] The aim was to study a continuative fog event in center and western Shandong Province from December 3 to 7 in 2011. [ Method] Based on regular meteorological data, a continuative heavy fog weather process during December 3 to 7 in 2011 was analyzed from the aspects of weather background, ground factors, T-Inp, and moisture and physical quantity field. [ Result] The heavy fog occurred under then at- mospheric circulation pattern controlled by the straight westerly air flow at 500 hPa middle latitudes, ridge of high pressure at middle and low levels, and weak pressure at the bottom of the surface high. The snowfall process for the formation of fog provided vapor conditions of fog, maintenance and development had benefited from lower layer of the warm and humid airflow. During the heavy fog, wind speed was between 1 and 3 m/s. The dew difference and visibility in the eady period had distinct daily changes, while the difference narrowed in the middle and later stage. Close to the ground was an obvious inversion layer, at the same time in the fog strong period temperature inversion layer were apparent between 700 and 800 hPa, these were helpful for fog formation and development. Hydraulic fracturing technology is an important means of shale gas development,and microseismic monitoring is the key technology of fracturing effect evaluation.In this study,hydraulic fracturing and microseismic monitoring were simultaneously conducted in the Eyangye 2HF well(hereinafter referred to as EYY2HF well).The target stratum of this well is the second member of the Doushantuo Formation of the Sinian System,which is the oldest stratum of horizontal shale gas wells in the world.A total of 4341 microseismic fracturing events were identified,and 23 fracturing stages of the well were defined.The fluctuation of the number of events showed a repeating“high-low”pattern,and the average energy of these events showed minimal differences.These findings indicate that the water pressure required for the reconstruction of the EYY2HF well is appropriate.The main body of the fracture network extended from northwest to southeast,consistent with the interpretation of regional geological and seismic data.The stimulated rock volumes showed a linear increase with the increase of the fracturing stage.Some technological measures,such as quick lift displacement,quick lift sand ratio,and pump stop for secondary sand addition,were adopted during fracturing to increase the complexity of the fracture network.Microseismic fracture monitoring of the well achieved expected eff ects and guided real-time fracturing operations and fracturing eff ect evaluation. 展开更多

Xianglushan-type iron deposits are one of the new types of iron deposits found in the Weining Area of Western Guizhou. The iron-bearing rock system is a paleo-weathered crustal sedimentary(or accumulating) stratum between the top of the Middle-Late Permian Emeishan basalt formation and the Late Permian Xuanwei formation. Iron ore is hosted in the Lower-Middle part of the rock system. In terms of the genesis of mineral deposit, this type of deposit should be a basalt paleo-weathering crustal redeposit type, very different from marine sedimentary iron deposits or continental weathering crust iron deposits. Based on field work and the analytical results of XRD Powder Diffraction, Electron Probe, Scanner Electron Microscope, etc., the geological setting of the ore-forming processes and the deposit features are illustrated in this paper. The ore-forming environment of the deposit and the Emeishan basalt weathering mineralization are also discussed in order to enhance the knowledge of the universality and diversity of mineralization of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province(ELIP), which may be a considerable reference to further research for ELIP metallogenic theories, and geological research for iron deposits in the paleo-weathering crust areas of the Emeishan basalt,Southwestern, China. 展开更多
