Oscar Wilde was one of the most radical aesthetes who demonstrated "art for art's sake" in the late Victorian Age.His brilliant comedies, for the witty paradoxes and epigrams in the dialogues and the cleverly constructed plots, have been acknowledged his greatest contribution to English literature, and The Importance of Being Ernest is his masterpiece in drama. In this essay,I focus on the girls of this drama,Cecily and Gwendolen. They are like twins;both of them are intelligent, romantic and passionate. They are very fantastic and insist on marrying a name, but they are not really like the serious people, they are free minded and to some extent, rebellious or out of social custom. From analyzing the two girls,I try to comprehend new women in Victorian Age and Wilde's aesthetic ideas. 展开更多

As the exponent of the aesthetic movement, Oscar Wilde has paidalmost excessive attention to the aestheticization of indoor spaces. For him, thehumanly-decorated house offers a sense of order and reason, which has, to a largeextent, assisted the formation of man’s ego and identity, while the outside world, filled with horror, confusion and anxiety, is always associated with the loss ofsubjectivity and individuality. His topophilia is well manifested in some of his morerenowned works, while its fullest expression can no doubt be found in The Decay ofLying, where he would complain in Vivian’s voice how “one becomes abstract andimpersonal” out of doors. In his one-act tragedy Salomé, however, the event whichwas traditionally believed to take place within Herod’s palace was deliberately setoutside the doors. To a certain degree, this arrangement has set the tone for the wholetragedy. Through the employment of the outdoor spaces and the deliberate confusionof the Inside with the Outside, Oscar Wilde has successfully created an atmosphere ofmadness, absurdity and horror that has haunted Salomé from the very beginning: theoutdoor spaces, in facilitating the identification of Salome with the image of Maenad, give the play a touch of madness; Salome’s deliberate attempts at confusing the Insidewith the Outside, principally motivated by the male gaze that permeates the indoorspaces and costs Salome her subjectivity, was plagued with futility and fruitlessness, from whence came the horror of homelessness that has consummated her tragedy. 展开更多

The Decay of Lying, one of Wilde’s famous critic dialogues,is a demonstration of his aesthetic opinions, such as Art is telling lies,Life imitates art etc, which gives full expression of his pursue of art’s purity and independence.Wilde absolutely takes the side of art and is against the forced interference of art as the subject by politics, utilitarianism, morality and ethics, against the erosion of the artistic realm of beauty by over-realness,against taking the form of art as the accessory to certain content or subject. However,Wilde totally isolates art from reality by putting them in the position of dual antithesis, and this is the root of the internal contradictions in his Aestheticism. This essay aims to discuss the contradictions from four aspects:contradiction between art and real life, art and morality, art and truth and then contradiction between art’s form and content,so as to get a better understanding and correct evaluation of Wilde and his aestheticism. 展开更多

The picture of Dorian Gray is the classic work of Oscar Wilde, the representative personage of Aestheticism. Since the novel was published in 1891, scholars have been studying it from various perspectives. Wilde expressed plentiful epigrams about love by conversations in the novel, and he once compared himself with characters in it, which provides possibility and clues for probing into his view of love through the novel. Starting from the description of women characters, Dorian's relationship with Basil and Henry, and some stories of marriage in the novel, the paper analyzes Wilde's aesthetic and pessimistic view of love and his advocacy for Greek love based on the British society then and Wilde's own experiences. 展开更多

A similar tragedy of lethal obsession, wanton murder, and perverse necrophilia, Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily remarkably parallels Wilde's play Salomé: A Tragedy in One Act. In the bloody crime of Wilde's Princess Salomé, Faulkner sees the archetype of a compelling and terrifying female nature, thereby creating the shocking perversity of his Lady Emily.Faulkner's short story, with Lady Emily an epitome of apocalyptic depravity like Princess Salomé, marks the end of an era in the history of the American South. 展开更多

Oscar Wilde is mainly famous for being the representative figure of Aesthetic Movement and the steadfast advocate of"art for art's sake". Although being influenced by the traditional dichotomy of women, Wilde does try to add some personal elements during this process. In one of his social comedies, An Ideal Husband, this wildean characteristic is more obvious. This essay attempts to reveal those hidden images which are employed by Wilde to represent his female characters and tries to show the Wilde's improvement of the traditional dichotomy. 展开更多

Oscar Fingal O ‘Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 – 1900) is an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous plays and one novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.Known for his biting wit,he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day.As a spokesman for aestheticism,he believes that beauty is the essence of art and life should imitate art.Salome is one of Wilde’ s important plays,in which he fully practices his idea of aestheticism. Therefore, aestheticism is the key to understanding this one-act play. This thesis is made up of three parts:the first part briefly introduces the aesthetic movement;the second part focuses on Oscar Wilde and his aesthetic beliefs;the last part which is also the most important one discusses the play Salome and its aesthetic values. 展开更多
