Rural transformation can improve poverty reduction, living standards, and health outcomes in developing countries. However, impacts associated with rural transformation vary by region, household, and individual trait(including gender). While research on rural transformation has been increasing over the last decade, there has been no comprehensive review conducted on the relationships between gender and rural transformation. Here,we conduct a systematic literature review to investigate the impacts of rural transformation on gender and the influence of gender inclusiveness on rural transformation. We reviewed 82 studies from 1960-2021 that explore the relationships between rural transformation and gender. We then developed a framework that captures incidences and flow directions between indicators. Results show that most studies examined the impacts of rural transformation on women and between gender indicators.Few investigated the role of women and the influence of gender inclusiveness on rural transformation.Overall, studies showed that rural transformation typically leads to positive outcomes for women regarding employment, income, and empowerment. However, negative impacts on women’s control over income, stability of new income sources, and access to healthy food are also common.Tailoring future development policies and programs to explicitly account for gender inclusiveness can lead to more successful rural transformation. 展开更多

With the gradual improvement of Chinese women’s status in the 21st century, gender studies and gender relations have become one of the hottest topics in Chinese society, which consequently prompted Chinese Women’s Cinema to attract the attention of larger audiences. With regard to the box office performance of Chinese Women’s Cinema, there seems to be a gap in research in finding an association between women’s status and the relevant films’box office performance. The purpose of this research is to outline the underlying reasons for the changes in gender roles and gender representation in the Chinese film industry over the past few decades in order to better understand this expansive social change in the 21st century. This study provides a comprehensive analysis through the use of questionnaires to better understand society’s attitude towards gender representation within the film industry. The questionnaire findings indicate that there is a direct correlation between people’s awareness of women’s changing status and gender equality and their acceptance of materials produced by Chinese Women’s Cinema. At the some time,it highlights that the Chinese government’s support and initiatives for gender equality have had a significant impact on the general popularity of Chinese Women’s Cinema. The significance of this research is to effectively popularize Chinese Women’s Cinema culture and the box office growth by understanding the social attitude towards gender representation in the Chinese film industry and to provide relevant information about the development direction and trend of Chinese Women’s Cinema.Furthermore, this research aims to provide foundational support for gender equality and help to understand the underlying factors that society needs to promote gender equality. 展开更多

Gender discrimination has long been the problem that exists in the entire world, including China. However,as more and more people are focusing on the general gender discrimination, the group recognized an extension of such discrimination-pregnancy discrimination in job hiring(the discrimination that women who are pregnant or have the inclination to pregnancy receive in hiring). The possible subtle pregnancy discrimination may be one of the main causes that lead to the declining fertility rate in China. The group decided to conduct an experiment to determine whether women are receiving more subtle discrimination in job hiring due to their identity as mother than men with children, men without children, and women without children.Using the form of questionary and resumes, the team found that Chinese women are indeed enduring subtle discrimination in work hiring. The experiment highlights the importance to promote further equality among women. However, there are some confounding variables, like the level of patient of the HR who reads the resume, affecting the ultimate result of the study. Keywords:gender discrimination, women’s career,Chinese job market, pregnancy discrimination, fertility rate in China. 展开更多

The purpose of this essay is to study whether the linguistic behaviour of adult women using hedging and tags as indicative of an intrinsically tentative gender identity or of the effects of male dominant position through analyzing daily conversations of the heterosexual couples. The small scale study employs the methodology, namely, recording spontaneous and natural spoken conversation from authentic interaction with the permission of the ten male-female couples.Digital record pen with an omnidirectional microphone are placed in the central living area of each couple's home. Then discourse analysis provides data making it possible to support Fishman's claim that women use tag questions and 'you know' not because women are not being really sure of themselves,or are looking to the addressee for confirmation, but because men in a dominant position often refuse to take responsibility for the smooth conduct of interpersonal relations, women use tag questions and 'you know' to elicit and maintain conversations. 展开更多

Despite being considered a potentially curable disease, breast cancer is the most frequent cause of cancer death in women worldwide, establishing the following paradox: high curability versus high mortality. Among the conditions conducive to this situation, such as difficult access to diagnosis and treatment and social support by the State, there is the need to discuss the impact of women’s caregiving, the backbone of the female gender role, on self-care in health. Gender has a powerful effect on determining health status: it may limit different rates of exposure to certain risks, different patterns in the quest for treatment or differential impacts of the social and economic determinants of health. The study shows the results of a qualitative methodology with nine women aged 48 to 74 years with varying levels of schooling and socioeconomic status, who had breast cancer at some stage of adult life and who regularly attend a nongovernmental organization (NGO) to support women with breast cancer, in the city of Niterói (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The participants’ discourses evidenced the idea of the primacy of the caregiving, the idealized image of the warrior woman and their self-neglect and State’s care as elements of the potential impact on the choices of these women concerning self-care, and consequently in their experiences of illness. 展开更多

Objectives: Iodine is an essential nutrient needed for the synthesis of hormone thyroxin. Hormone thyroxin is involved in the metabolism of several nutrients, the regulation of enzymes and differentiation of cells, tissues and organs. Iodine deficiency (ID) impairs the development of the brain and nervous system. It affects cognitive capacity, educability, productivity and child mortality. ID hinders physical strength and causes reproductive failure. The objective of this paper is to explore if the health impacts of ID are more common and severe among women. Design: Using primary data (notes from a visit) and secondary data, this paper examines if the effects of ID are more common and severe among Oromo women inEthiopia. Findings: The health impacts of ID are more common and severe among women. Conclusions: ID is an easily preventable nutritional problem. In Oromia, the persistence of ID is explained by the Ethiopian government’s colonial social policies. Preventing ID should be seen as part of the efforts we make to enhance capacity building, promote health, gender equity and social justice. Implications: Iodine deficiency has a wide range of biological, social, economic and cultural impacts. Preventing ID can be instrumental in bringing about gender equity and building the capacity of people. 展开更多

This paper aims to reflect upon the approximations between literature and history in Pat Barker's novel Regeneration (1991). The novel fictionalizes the conversations held by three war veterans who wrote and fought in the First World War (Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves) during their stay at Craiglockart's Hospital--a war hospital for the treatment of shell-shocked officers, in Scotland. The paper addresses more emphatically how traditional male and female roles are renegotiated in Barker's metafiction. Finally, it provides some considerations on British women war writing of the First World War, a tradition in which Regeneration is rooted and emerges as a remarkable contemporary example. 展开更多

This year highlights the centenary of the outbreak of World War I and this paper aims at comparing and contrasting multicultural views on the First World War in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway (1925). The views on the First War are portrayed by a plurality of voices, most of which are women's, and they allow readers to think of the war experience in a more subjective but also more plural way. In this novel, voices from both sides of the First War resonate, i.e., the hegemonic side of the war--the Allies--is compared and contrasted to the subjectivity of the voices of the "others"--the Axis, although they do not necessarily work in harmony. Such innovation in point of view has, in great part, contributed to converging story and history, allowing this literary work to partake in the production of historical knowledge and cultural memory of the War. 展开更多

The present study aims to focus on the relationship between gender and everyday life and reflect on the meanings of being a woman in the 1950s and the 1960s over Sally Potter’s film Ginger and Rosa(2012a).The 1950s and the 1960s are marked with significant changes and transformations in terms of the social statuses and everyday lives of women in many countries all around the world.Women began to question their gendered roles and performances, resist“doing gender”and speak out“the problem that has no name”in these years, which would then evolve into the second-wave feminist movement—a significant historical period in women’s history. Therefore,an analysis of this specific period is considered significant to understand the relationship between gender and everyday life. Thus, the present study first addresses the relationship between gender and everyday life in general terms, discussing the social construction of gender and how we are taught to do gender through socialization. Then,it examines women’s practices, performances, relationships, conflicts, and resistances in their everyday lives throughout the 1950s and the 1960s over the film Ginger and Rosa.Considering the historical, social, and political developments at the time, this study tries to explore significant issues within feminist studies such as the relationship between mothers and daughters, and female friendship/sisterhood through the characters in the film, and comprehend what it meant to be a young girl,a woman,a wife, and a mother in both private and public spheres in these years based upon the director’s own experiences and memories. 展开更多

Reoccurring symptoms and persistent problems that continue post treatment can be characteristic of the vaginal infections Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC). The purpose of this study was to describe women’s life experiences in managing the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and Candida. Sixteen women were recruited and participated in an interview study when they contacted a Swedish gynecology clinic with vaginal complaints that ranged from and included abnormal discharge, irritation itching along with serious malodor. An interpretive phenomenological approach was used with an individual interview to get a more intimate understanding of the women experiencing these problems. The finding of this study shows that managing the recurrent symptoms of the infections remains to be a challenge for women as it has a clearly negative impact on the quality of their lives. Four themes developed: frustration and mood disorders, intimacy changes in the relationship, exposure, hope and relief. The women had high hopes of eliminating the symptoms within the six-month study period. The treatment program, with its well-developed guidelines and continuity of care within the context of the study greatly improved the quality of life of these women. Women had feelings of frustration and anxiety when nothing could cure their problem while they had also a great hope to get rid of the symptoms with a long striking treatment. Well-developed guidelines and continuity of care can help these women to have an improved quality of life. 展开更多

The paper discusses selected works of Polish women artists and directors who employ various forms of audiovisual presentation: film, video art, and new media. The author wrote it from the perspective of a film scholar whose interests focus on women directors and problems of cultural and gender identity in the contemporary cinema. Nevertheless, she decided to expand her research area to include works of Polish female artists who utilise the media and these means of expression that can be analysed in regard to modern film studies. She adopted the theoretical, feminist, and gender perspective, also applying the methodology of cultural studies in their broadest definition. This enables the author to situate the movies under discussion in diverse contexts and theoretical concepts. The purpose of the paper is thus not to offer a comprehensive or historical discussion of women's input into audiovisual arts of Central and East European Countries, but to emphasise complexity and demonstrate dynamics of their artistic creativity in Poland particularly. In her analysis, Radkiewicz considers four different research approaches: historical, theoretical (which refers to film and media studies), artistic, and identity related ones. From this perspective, she investigates filmmakers' and artists' strategies of using the cinematic field, film conventions, and means of representations, which are the foundation of their narrative expression. 展开更多

This article explores both the personal and transnational dimensions of domestic science education and study abroad for the pioneering generation of Chinese women in science.By focusing on women’s unique calculus of risk and reward, the article not only distinguishes Chinese women’s experiences from those of their male counterparts but also delineates the special contours of the Chinese case within the global advancement of women in science. The article begins by outlining some of the features and dynamics of early Chinese girls’schools that affected students’interest in and preparation for further scientific study. Then it traces the emerging college-level opportunities that made it possible for women who were studying science in China to contemplate advanced work overseas.Turning to study abroad, the article highlights the radicalness of the decision to study abroad by examining the impact of both family background and national circumstances on Chinese women’s strategies of mobility. The article argues that if we are to take women’s experiences seriously,we cannot just look at scientific pursuits in terms of achievements in the development of Chinese science,we also need to consider the ways that·scientific ambitions forced individuals—both male and female—to navigate and reimagine multiple social norms and expectations. 展开更多

The founding of the Communist party of China, especially the founding of pRC and the establishment of the socialist system, opened a new chapter in the development of the Chinese women’s cause. The Communist party of China(CpC)and the Chinese government have a strong political will and a sense of political responsibility in realizing gender equality and protecting women’s rights.over the past 100 years, under the leadership of the CpC,the status of Chinese women has been fundamentally changed in the political and legal sense, and a historic breakthrough has been achieved. The development of the Chinese women’s cause has overcome many difficulties. In particular, after the launch of the reform and opening-up,on the basis of economic development, social progress, and continuous promotion of the rule of law,a set of legal protection systems for comprehensive protection of women’s rights have gradually been formed. The concept of social gender has provided new perspectives and approaches for China’s legal studies, and the process of gender mainstreaming in China has continued to deepen.China follows the socialist path of women’s cause with Chinese characteristics and continues to strengthen the legal protection of women’s rights in China, thereby making important contributions to the development of women in the world. 展开更多

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, firstly published in 1848,was the second and final novel of Anne Brontë,the youngest of the Brontësisters, telling a story of the mysterious young widow Helen Huntingdon, who flees her abusive husband and hides with her son at Wildfell Hall.Just as most contemporary critic defines it as one of the first feminist novels, the overall characterization of Helen sends a strong message of the empowerment of women. What confuses modern readers, however,is the subtle confrontation between the empowerment and its subversion. Thus, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the text concerning Anne's empow⁃erment of Helen and the corresponding subversion of the established empowerment before unveiling the fundamental cause of such arrangement with a view of shedding light on the comprehension of Anne Brontë's belief in universal social issues. 展开更多
