This article presents and discusses Joao Guimaraes Rosa as an outstanding Brazilian author whose literary work,especially Sagarana,expresses aesthetically different ways of lifeforms between human beings,animals,plant...This article presents and discusses Joao Guimaraes Rosa as an outstanding Brazilian author whose literary work,especially Sagarana,expresses aesthetically different ways of lifeforms between human beings,animals,plants,and landscapes.Movement and transformations are the basic principles in which the melody of prose expresses itself as a language in and as motion.Although based in Brazilian culture,Rosa shows the conviviality of different logics which are not reduced to one myth of the Brazilian people,but produce multiple ways of coexistence between different life-forms and culture narratives.The translingual title ttSagarana,'already alludes to the transitions between two languages,regions,and cultures:the Icelandic“saga-”and the Tupic-Word“rana”which means“similar”or“alike.”The interpretation figures out the correlation of different provenances(“Herkiinfte”)which emerge from Rosa’s craft of storytelling.In its center,the Sertao arises as a region of nature whose forces are connected with the life of human beings.As fractal of the world,it symbolizes Brazilian relations as a world of its own and at the same time as a part of the world of others.From this point of view the essay turns world literature upside down:it emphasizes on the one hand that the epoch of world literature since Goethe has come to an end and that the meridian has shifted to Latin America.On the other hand it can be observed that the lusophonic world between Brazil and Angola,Portugal and Kap Verde develops new perspectives on literatures of the world beyond the fixed coordinations of periphery and center.Rosa's ways of world making already shift the perspective from the local to the global as a miniatured model of a universe which reveals interpretations of a better understanding of the world as world fractals.展开更多

The article both presents how,from the end of the 1980s onwards,native peoples have begun to occupy certain spaces of textual production and circulation that they had not previously occupied in the Brazilian cultural ...The article both presents how,from the end of the 1980s onwards,native peoples have begun to occupy certain spaces of textual production and circulation that they had not previously occupied in the Brazilian cultural scene(for social,linguistic,and cultural reasons,but also political and juridical)and discusses how this process has provoked a vigorous movement of dilation of traditional textual and discursive borders in Western culture.Texts deriving from indigenous peoples in the sphere of academic discourse are,in general,bilingual,and are structured in ways that combine aspects of intellectual production with those of artistic creation.Moreover,they are also structured around a rather complex conception of the notion of authorship(considering that they are written by an author but represent the voice of their people).As examples,the article analyzes the case of Os cantos tradicionais Ye'kwana[Traditional Ye'kwana Chants],by the indigenous teacher and researcher Fernando Ye'kwana Gimenes,winner of the 2020/2021 edition of the Dirce Cortes Riedel Masters Dissertation Award by the Brazilian Association of Comparative Literature,as a typical example of the cultural phenomenon discussed.The traditional Ye'kwana chants present significant transgressions in relation to the traditional notions of narrative logic and the dominant forms of narration in the fields of literature and history.The awarding of this academic prize to an indigenous inhabitant of the forest,on the border between Brazil and Venezuela,by the largest association of comparative literature in Latin America,in addition to being an important act in political terms,demonstrates how urgent it is to rethink processes of global literary dissemination beyond the restricted frameworks configured by the logic of hegemonic cultures,which are based on closed divisions and hierarchies.With this,we intend to contribute to the process of including Amerindian texts in the repertoire of Comparative Literature and World Literature.展开更多
Circulation and reception of various national literatures,particularly significant texts and literary traditions in minority languages such as Bengali,are often neglected by the scholarly community and literary instit...Circulation and reception of various national literatures,particularly significant texts and literary traditions in minority languages such as Bengali,are often neglected by the scholarly community and literary institutions.This creates an incomplete view of world literature,which should encompass the wholeness or totality of literature from different geographical locations.In an effort to minimize this gap,this research article explores the popular collection of Bengali narrative ballads,Maimansingha Gitika,compiled by Dineshchandra Sen.Most of the collected narrative ballads were composed between the 16th and early 18th century,yet this prime text is largely unavailable to readers and unobtainable to experts in politico-cultural and historical contexts.Using the concept of community and new historicism,this article analyzes two narrative ballads from Maimansingha Gitika,offering critical insights into the power structures of society and the new knowledge systems surrounding the concept of community.Through this analysis,the article highlights the importance of including prime texts in different national languages to inform the scholarly community about the rich literary traditions and relationality of knowledge extracted from minority languages to contemporary Euro-American knowledge structures.展开更多

文摘This article presents and discusses Joao Guimaraes Rosa as an outstanding Brazilian author whose literary work,especially Sagarana,expresses aesthetically different ways of lifeforms between human beings,animals,plants,and landscapes.Movement and transformations are the basic principles in which the melody of prose expresses itself as a language in and as motion.Although based in Brazilian culture,Rosa shows the conviviality of different logics which are not reduced to one myth of the Brazilian people,but produce multiple ways of coexistence between different life-forms and culture narratives.The translingual title ttSagarana,'already alludes to the transitions between two languages,regions,and cultures:the Icelandic“saga-”and the Tupic-Word“rana”which means“similar”or“alike.”The interpretation figures out the correlation of different provenances(“Herkiinfte”)which emerge from Rosa’s craft of storytelling.In its center,the Sertao arises as a region of nature whose forces are connected with the life of human beings.As fractal of the world,it symbolizes Brazilian relations as a world of its own and at the same time as a part of the world of others.From this point of view the essay turns world literature upside down:it emphasizes on the one hand that the epoch of world literature since Goethe has come to an end and that the meridian has shifted to Latin America.On the other hand it can be observed that the lusophonic world between Brazil and Angola,Portugal and Kap Verde develops new perspectives on literatures of the world beyond the fixed coordinations of periphery and center.Rosa's ways of world making already shift the perspective from the local to the global as a miniatured model of a universe which reveals interpretations of a better understanding of the world as world fractals.

文摘The article both presents how,from the end of the 1980s onwards,native peoples have begun to occupy certain spaces of textual production and circulation that they had not previously occupied in the Brazilian cultural scene(for social,linguistic,and cultural reasons,but also political and juridical)and discusses how this process has provoked a vigorous movement of dilation of traditional textual and discursive borders in Western culture.Texts deriving from indigenous peoples in the sphere of academic discourse are,in general,bilingual,and are structured in ways that combine aspects of intellectual production with those of artistic creation.Moreover,they are also structured around a rather complex conception of the notion of authorship(considering that they are written by an author but represent the voice of their people).As examples,the article analyzes the case of Os cantos tradicionais Ye'kwana[Traditional Ye'kwana Chants],by the indigenous teacher and researcher Fernando Ye'kwana Gimenes,winner of the 2020/2021 edition of the Dirce Cortes Riedel Masters Dissertation Award by the Brazilian Association of Comparative Literature,as a typical example of the cultural phenomenon discussed.The traditional Ye'kwana chants present significant transgressions in relation to the traditional notions of narrative logic and the dominant forms of narration in the fields of literature and history.The awarding of this academic prize to an indigenous inhabitant of the forest,on the border between Brazil and Venezuela,by the largest association of comparative literature in Latin America,in addition to being an important act in political terms,demonstrates how urgent it is to rethink processes of global literary dissemination beyond the restricted frameworks configured by the logic of hegemonic cultures,which are based on closed divisions and hierarchies.With this,we intend to contribute to the process of including Amerindian texts in the repertoire of Comparative Literature and World Literature.
文摘Circulation and reception of various national literatures,particularly significant texts and literary traditions in minority languages such as Bengali,are often neglected by the scholarly community and literary institutions.This creates an incomplete view of world literature,which should encompass the wholeness or totality of literature from different geographical locations.In an effort to minimize this gap,this research article explores the popular collection of Bengali narrative ballads,Maimansingha Gitika,compiled by Dineshchandra Sen.Most of the collected narrative ballads were composed between the 16th and early 18th century,yet this prime text is largely unavailable to readers and unobtainable to experts in politico-cultural and historical contexts.Using the concept of community and new historicism,this article analyzes two narrative ballads from Maimansingha Gitika,offering critical insights into the power structures of society and the new knowledge systems surrounding the concept of community.Through this analysis,the article highlights the importance of including prime texts in different national languages to inform the scholarly community about the rich literary traditions and relationality of knowledge extracted from minority languages to contemporary Euro-American knowledge structures.
文摘While the study of world literature is often seen as escaping the boundaries of eurocentrism-albeit with the need for constant revision and self-critique-a truer overcoming would involve another sort of anthologization,namely,of world theory and criticism.World literature should go beyond being a reified collection of translated texts,to become an exploration and comparison of the different ways of thinking about literature and aesthetics in different parts of the world.Barbara Cassin's Vocabulaire Europeen des philosophies:Dictionnaire des intraduisibles provides a possible model in this regard.The untranslatability of critical terms from different traditions is generative of new meanings due to the repeated efforts to translate and to compare non-synonymous terms with each other.This essay examines the untranslatability and comparability of several different terms from Asian aesthetic traditions.
文摘From different perspectives,Shu-meiShih,Rey Chow,and Revathi Krishnaswamy have accused Comparative Literature of being inherently Eurocentric in that the comparative studyofnon-European/Western literatures continues being steered by European/Western paradigms.In what follows I briefly outline their respective positions,and argue that over the past few decades at least some attempts have been made to move beyond Eurocentrism.
