The New Dimensions of Occupational Health

Occupational Health (OH) is an important chapter of Public Health but its visibility is poor and continues to decrease. Examples of this worrying trend show that it impacts on our society regarding health of the working population and the retired individuals and on the economy through huge expenses for health, absenteeism, psychosocial problems, loss of performance and quality of work, etc. To cope with this challenge and to give its right place to OH, a global approach and a vision of this multidisciplinary field is needed as well as the development of emerging issues that stress, besides the prevention of occupational diseases, the promotion of “good health” through sciences like salutogenesis, positive psychology and the new findings of neuroscience. Moreover, all the partners involved in OH have to take their responsibility of this matter. The OH professionals have to enlarge the scope of their expertise;the academic institutions and research and education centers have to give more support to OH and the social partners and the decision-makers (politicians) have to put OH in their priorities. This paper is not a review of the new dimensions of OH but an overview of the emerging issues that have to be developed, based on the author’s experience of more than 40 years.

Chronic fatigue is associated with increased disease-related worries and concerns in inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To investigate the impact of chronic fatigue on disease-related worries in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the potential multicolinearity between subjective questionnaires.METHODS:Patients in remission or with mild-tomoderate disease activity completed the fatigue questionnaire (FQ),the rating form of IBD patient concerns (RFIPC),the Short-Form 36 (SF-36),and IBD questionnaire (N-IBDQ).In addition,clinical and epidemiological data were obtained.RESULTS:In total,140 patients were included;of which 92 were diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and 48 with Crohn's disease.The mean age of patients with chronic fatigue was 44.2 years (SD=15.8) and for non-fatigued patients was 44.7 years (SD=16.0).Chronic fatigued patients had clinically significantly increased levels of disease-related worries,as measured by Cohen's d effect size.Worries about having an ostomy bag,loss of bowel control,and energy levels were most prominent in both chronic fatigued and non-chronic fatigued IBD patients.Variance inflation factor (VIF) and tolerance indicated that there were no problematic multicolinearity among the FQ,RFIPC,SF-36 and N-IBDQ responses (VIF < 5 and tolerance > 2).CONCLUSION:Chronic fatigue is associated with increased levels of disease-related worries and concerns in IBD.Increased levels of worries were also associated with impaired health-related quality of life.

Assessing quality of life using the brief cancer-related worry inventory for gynecological surgery

BACKGROUND The mental status of gynecologic patients has an important influence on their quality of life(QOL).Although high-quality QOL studies into breast cancer patients have been performed internationally,few QOL studies have examined patients with gynecological cancer.AIM To investigate the brief cancer-related worry inventory(BCWI)could evaluate the mental status of gynecological patients.METHODS Between July 2018 and December 2018,19 consecutive gynecological cancer patients were prospectively recruited for this study.The BCWI is a 15-item selfreported questionnaire that assesses cancer-related worries on a numeric scale(0–100).RESULTS The high BCWI group was significantly younger than the low BCWI group.Regarding social status,the absence of a spouse and children was significantly more common in the high BCWI group than in the low BCWI group.The operation time was longer in the worsening BCWI group than in the stable BCWI group(305.3±140.5 min vs 171.1±97.2 min;P=0.026).CONCLUSION Being young,having no family,and a long operation time were found to be risk factors for increased anxiety.Therefore,gynecological cancer patients should be assessed using the BCWI,and specific perioperative mental care should be considered for highly anxious patients.

Consciousness of Sorrow and Worry and the National Pedagogy of Reform

River Elegy(Heshang)is a Chinese TV documentary aired on Chinese Central Television(CCTV)in 1988.Its provocative condemnation of the thousand-year-old'yellow civilization'(huangse wenming黄色文明)of China stirred up a tornado of controversies among Chinese audiences.Intense debates and reflections on the documentary both inside and outside China have made Heshang one of the most intriguing'phenomena'in contemporary Chinese culture.This paper proposes a new perspective to read Heshang,tackling it as a historically situated narrative that embodies a post-Mao intellectual discourse of the national sentiment.In the new context of post-Mao China,what does Heshang tell of the relative positionalities of the intellectuals,the masses,and the state in the frame of Chinese modernity?How do we dialectically understand the documentary’s national pedagogy of reform in relation to the elusive agency of the low-quality Chinese masses?With these questions in mind,I revisit Heshang’s claim of weak political agency as an embodiment of low people quality.I argue that the national sentiment of the consciousness of sorrow and worry(忧患意识)simultaneously suggests and subverts the national pedagogy of reform promoted by the Heshang intellectuals.

THE LONGITUDINAL OBSERVATION OF THE EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTICS ON HUMAN TEAR LYSOZYME ACTIVITY

It is well known that lysozyme, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of bacterial cell walls, is one of the important substances protecting the eye surface from bacterial infections. It was reported that the aminoglycoside antibiotics strongly inhibited the tear lysozyme activity. The lysozyme activity of tears which were added to different con- centrations of two aminoglycoside antibiotics and three other antibiotics was determined longitudinally. No influence of any antibiotics on tear lysozyme activity was found. Therefore it is unnecessary to worry about that the use of aminoglycosida antibic tics may weaken the defence function of the eye.

Modern Health Worries and the Personality Disorders: Two Studies Using Different Measures

This paper reports on two studies using different measures of both Modern Health Worries (MHW) and the Personality Disorders (PDs) to establish the relationship between the two concepts. Study 1 used the PID-5 which is a measure of maladaptive personality traits and the extended 40 item MHW scale. Study 2 used the original 28 item measure of MHW and PDs as measured by the Coolidge Axis-II Inventory—Short Form: SCATI. In study 1 a regression on the total MHW scale accounted for 14% of the variance: those who scored higher on Antagonism and Negative Affect had higher MHW scores. In the study 2 regressions showed four variables consistently related to MHW: sex (females with higher scores), optimism, political beliefs (left wing liberals with higher scores) and those with Cluster B personality disorders (dramatic, overly emotional, erratic). There was enough overlap in the two studies to conclude that various PDs mainly from Cluster B (Moving Against others) were modestly related to MHW as predicted. Limitations and implications are considered.
