Zinc calcium phosphate (Zn-Ca-P) coating and cerium-doped zinc calcium phosphate (Zn-Ca-Ce-P) coating were prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy. The chemical compositions, morphologies and corrosion resistance of coatings were investigated through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with hydrogen volumetric and electrochemical tests. The results indicate that both coatings predominately contain crystalline hopeite (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O), Mg3(PO4)2 and Ca3(PO4)2, and traces of non-crystalline MgF2 and CaF2. The Zn-Ca-Ce-P coating is more compact than the Zn-Ca-P coating due to the formation of CePO4, and displays better corrosion resistance than the Zn-Ca-P coating. Both coatings protect the AZ31 Mg substrate only during an initial immersion period. The micro-galvanic corrosion between the coatings and their substrates leads to an increase of hydrogen evolution rate (HER) with extending the immersion time. The addition of Ce promotes the homogenous distribution of Ca and formation of hopeite. The Zn-Ca-Ce-P coating has the potential for the primer coating on magnesium alloys. 展开更多

The wear and corrosion resistance of Fe_(72.2)Cr_(16.8)Ni_(7.3)Mo_(1.6)Mn_(0.7)C_(0.2)Si_(1.2) and Fe_(77.3)Cr_(15.8)Ni_(3.9)Mo_(1.1)Mn_(0.5)C_(0.2)Si_(1.2) coatings laser-cladded on AISI 4130 steel were studied.The coatings possess excellent wear and corrosion resistance despite the absence of expensive yttrium,tungsten,and cobalt and very little molybdenum.The microstructure mainly consists of dendrites and eutectic phases,such as duplex(γ+α)-Fe and the Fe–Cr(Ni)solid solution,confirmed via energy dispersive spectrometry and X-ray diffraction.The cladded Fe-based coatings have lower coefficients of friction,and narrower and shallower wear tracks than the substrate without the cladding,and the main wear mechanism is mild abrasive wear.Electrochemical test results suggest that the soft Fe_(72.2)Cr_(16.8)Ni_(7.3)Mo_(1.6)Mn_(0.7)C_(0.2)Si_(1.2) coating with high Cr and Ni concentrations has high passivation resistance,low corrosion current,and positive corrosion potential,providing a better protective barrier layer to the AISI 4130 steel against corrosion. 展开更多

The modified zinc phosphate conversion coatings(ZPC) were formed on hot-dip galvanized(HDG) steel when 1.0 g/L sodium molybdate were added in a traditional zinc phosphate solution. The growth performance and corrosion resistance of the modified ZPC were investigated by SEM, open circuit potential(OCP), mass gain, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) measurements and compared with those of the traditional ZPC. The results show that if sodium molybdate is added in a traditional zinc phosphate solution, the nucleation of zinc phosphate crystals is increased obviously; zinc phosphate crystals are changed from bulky acicular to fine flake and a more compact ZPC is obtained. Moreover, the mass gain and coverage of the modified ZPC are also boosted. The corrosion resistance of ZPC is increased with an increase in coverage, and thus the corrosion protection ability of the modified ZPC for HDG steel is more outstanding than that of the traditional ZPC. 展开更多

The corrosion behavior of SZAC in 3.5%NaCl solution was studied by means of SEM, EDS, EIS and so on. Results indicate that aluminum corroded in advance of zinc to produce speculate or spherical substances, which attaches to SZAC and adds mass to it. Corrosion production passivates metal powders in SZAC, causes E corr of SZAC to increase gradually, and causes the arising of the third time constant in EIS, which corresponds to the insulation of corrosion production. 展开更多

AI coatings with different microstructures were prepared on the surface of Gd using the magnetron sputtering technique to improve its corrosion resistance. The corrosion behaviors for the pure Gd and Gd with Al coating in distilled water were studied using the mass loss and electrochemical performance. As a result, pure Gd without coating shows a certain amount of surface cracks under water flow conditions, whereas the polygonal Al coating decreases the path of the corrosive medium to body due to the existence of eroding pits structure. Compared with the polygonal structure Al coating and pure Gd, the lamellar structure of Al coating exhibits a higher electrochemical protection performance (e.g., a lower corrosion current and higher self-corrosion potential) and no occurrence of pitting corrosion. Due to an effective physical shield, the formation of the lamellar structure protected the inner Gd part from being corroded, and prolonged the duration of cathodic protection. 展开更多

The corrosion resistance of the coating in solutions of 0. 5 mol/L H2SO4 , 3.5 % NaCl and seawater was evaluated utilizing the electrochemical polarization corrosion-test method. The surface morphology of Al coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The corrosion properties were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization curves and neutral salt spray(NSS) test. The formation of the uniform and compact Al coating is a necessary condition to achieve excellent corrosion resistance. A zirconium-titanium based amino trimethylene phosphonate hybrid coating on AA6061 aluminum alloys was formed by dipping in a fluorotitanate/zirconate acid and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) solution for improving the lacquer adhesion and corrosion resistance as a substitute of chromate coatings. The morphology and structure of the hybrid coating were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface composition and structure characteristics were also investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transformation infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of SEM and AFM show that the hybrid coating present piece particle distribution which is much denser than that of the zirconium-titanium coating. The results of XPS and FTIR indicate that the hybrid coating is a hybrid composite structure composed of both the zirconium-titanium and amino trimethylene phosphonate coatings. 展开更多

(Cu-Ni)/(10NiO-90NiFe204) cermet inert anodes containing metal Cu-Ni0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt pct were prepared and their corrosion resistance to Na3AlF6-Al2O3 melts was investigated. The results indicate that the content of metal Cu-Ni has little effect on the steady-state concentration of Ni in the electrolyte and the values could not be used to effectively differentiate their corrosion resistance. The steady-state concentration of Fe decreases from 304×10^-6 to 168×10^-6 and that of Cu increases from 21×10^-6 to 71×10^-6 with the content of metal Cu-Ni increasing from 0 to 20 wt pct. Post-examination shows that metallic phase Cu-Ni is corroded preferentially during electrolysis and many pores are left at the anode surface. Considering the corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity, the cermet containing metal Cu-Ni 5 wt pct should be selected and studied further. 展开更多

Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) coatings were fabricated on 6063 aluminum alloy in a cheap and convenient electrolyte. The effect of different current densities, i e, 5, 10, 15, and 20 A/dm2on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of coatings was comprehensively studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), stereoscopic microscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), respectively. It is found that the pore density decreases and the pore size increases with increasing current density. The XRD results show that the coatings are only composed of α-Al2O3and γ-Al2O3. Potentiodynamic polarization test proves that the coating formed under 10 A/dm2possesses the best anticorrosion property. The long time EIS test shows that the coating under 10 A/dm2is able to protect the aluminum alloy substrate after long time of immersion in 0.59 M NaCl solution, which confirms the salt solution immersion test results in 2 M NaCl solution. 展开更多

A protecting zinc and aluminum coating on the surface of AZ91D magnesium alloys was obtained by thermal spraying to improve the corrosion and wear resistance performances. In order to enhance the combination between magnesium alloy matrix and zinc and aluminum coating, the sample was heat-treated at 300℃for 2 h, then, the cross-section patterns, XRD pattern, micro-hardness, wear and corrosion resistance abilities were researched. The results indicate that the interface between the coating and substrate is metallurgical bond, and a transitional fusion layer is formed by diffusion. The micro-scale abrasion test and polarization test in 3% NaCl solution show that the diffusion-treated specimen has better wear and corrosion resistance performances in comparison with the undiffusion-treated and substrate magnesium alloys; in addition, it has relatively higher micro-hardness than the undiffusion-treated magnesium alloys. 展开更多

In order to improve the property of traditional Ce-based conversion coatings, Ce-silane-ZrO2 composite coatings were successfully prepared on 1060 aluminum. The microstructure, chemical element composition and corrosion resistance of Ce-based conversion coatings and Ce-silane-ZrO2 composite coatings were investigated by SEM, AFM, XPS and EIS analyses. Stacking structure of the composite coating can be observed. The inner layer of the composite coatings mainly consists of oxide and hydroxide of Ce(Ⅲ), and the silane network is composed of the outer layer together with a small amount of Ce(Ⅳ) hydroxide. By adding silane and ZrO2 nanoparticles into Ce-based conversion coatings, the porosity and the micro cracks of the coatings decrease apparently accompanying with the improvement of the corrosion resistance. 展开更多

The properties of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-WC-ZrO2 composite anode for zinc electrowinning were investigated. The electrochemical performance was studied by Tafel polarization curves(Tafel), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and corrosion rate obtained in an acidic zinc sulfate electrolyte solution. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDXS) were used to observe the microstructural features of coating. Anodes of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2, Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-WC, Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-ZrO2, and Pb-1%Ag anodes were also researched. The results indicated that the Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-WC-ZrO2 showed the best catalytic activity and corrosion resistant performance; the intensity of diffraction peak exhibited the highest value as well as a new PbWO4 phase; the content of WC and ZrO2 in coating showed the highest value as well as the finest grain size. 展开更多

A double-layer aluminum consisting of an aluminum core and a shellof SiO2 and polyacrylic acid was synthesized.This modified aluminum was used to improve the corrosion resistance and dispersive property of aluminum in waterborne media.TEM,FTIR,XPS,and EDX determination showed that PAA and SiO2 were coated on the surface of aluminum.Evolved hydrogen detection showed that the corrosion resistance of composite particle had been markedly improved.Maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of SiO2 coated aluminum(SiO2@Al)was 95.1% while that of double-layer coated aluminum(PAA/SiO2@Al)was 98.8%.Meanwhile,polyacrylic acid layer improved the agglomeration of aluminum significantly.According to the dispersibility test,the particle size of 50% volume fraction [d(0.5)] of aluminum,SiO2@Aland PAA/SiO2@Alwere 42,53,and 34 μm,respectively. 展开更多

The process of mixed rare earth metal (REM) conversion coating on aluminum alloy LY12 (2024) was introduced. The corrosion resistance of mixed REM conversion coating was examined by using weight loss test and electrochemical method. The results show that the mixed REM conversion coating increases the corrosion resistance of the alloy surface. Examination result of scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the coating exhibits honeycomb-like feature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that the coating is amorphous. The result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that mixed REM conversion coating consists predominantly of Ce and O. The contents of other rare earth elements (La, Pr) are relatively low. 展开更多
