There are some essential differences between these two books. On Yue (《乐论》) systematically discussed and developed the early Confucian thought of Li (礼) and Yue (乐), and concentrated on Xunzi’s view of social reality then. Yueji (《乐记》),which retained the ancient music thoughts and Confucian thoughts of Li (礼) and Yue (乐), including On Yue (《乐论》), embodies the concept of the Jing Xue (经学) of Han dynasty, and also combines the idea of Astrology at the same time. It integrates the Pre-Qin Confucian thought of Li (礼) and Yue (乐) in astrology, so it basically subverts the fundamental idea of Confucian thought of Li (礼) and Yue (乐).
