A Comparison of Confucian Analects Translated by James Legge and Bur ton Watson

Confucian Analects is one of the most important ancient Chinese classics,attracting various scholars to study and trans late it throughout history.Here I extract the translation versions of James Legge and Burton Watson of chapter 1.Raised by Hans J.Vermeer,skopos theory determines the translation strategies that are used in the translation;so this paper will briefly analyze the two translations’features from the perspective of domestication and foreignization under different translation goals.

能指(signifier)与所指(signified)是语言学家索绪尔在讨论语言符号时所提出的一组概念,能指与所指之间的关系是任意的,没有必然联系,但在实际运用中能指与所指有固定的关系。伊恩·麦克尤恩的短篇《立体几何》中就是利用了这组概念的关系,推翻读者阅读的预设,使故事的结局出人意表,作者从叙述角度和叙述内容的角度对此进行了分析。
