Therefore, this study sought to investigate the inhibitory effect of aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera and Newbuoldia laevis leaves on FeSO4 and Sodium Nitroprusside (SNP) induced lipid peroxidation in rat testes in vitro. Incubation of the testes tissue homogenate in the presence of FeSO4 and SNP caused a significant increase in the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of the testes. The aqueous extract from both Moringa oleifera and Newbuoldia laevis leaves caused a significant decrease in the MDA contents of the testes in a dose-dependent manner. However, aqueous extract from Moringa oleifera leaf (EC50 = 0.29 mg/ml) had a significant (P2+ induced lipid peroxidation in the rat testes homogenate than that of Newbuoldia laevis leaf extract (EC50 = 0.58 mg/ml);while there was no significant (P2+ chelating and reducing power. Therefore, these plants have potential to prevent oxidative stress in testes and improve fertility outcomes.展开更多

The purified lectin in all the bean samples showed to be glucose and sucrose binding. The hemagglutinating activity, was non selective to type of blood group (A, B, AB and O). Anti-bacteria interaction with Escherichia coli showed clear zone of inhibition of about 1.5 ± 0.5 mm with lectin from Feregede and Otili while there was slight agglutination with lectin from Pakala. Staphylococcus aureus sensitivity to the lectin extracted from Otili with clear zone of inhibition of 2.0 ± 0.5 mm was also found in the control chloramphenicol. However there was pronounced agglutination with lectin from Feregede and Pakala with Staphylococcus auereus. This may be a clear indication that lectin from local underutilized wild bean understudy will agglutinate and interact with a gram positive bacteria more than gram negative bacteria.展开更多

In the light of this stark reality of a country like Nigeria which is constantly plunged into pitch darkness all year round, it has become expedient for a sustainable and urgent remedy to be sought if our country will ever think of rubbing shoulders with the economies of the world. It is this pathetic scenario, we find ourselves in that it has given rise to this paper which tends to review possible ways and means of redressing the ugly trend. This paper examines the prospects and possible applications of Smart Grid Technology (SGT) to the Nigeria Power System. Nigeria Power System consists of 28 buses, 32 Transmission lines and 10 generating stations, with a view to reduce the high active and reactive transmission losses. The study shows that smart grid system will make the present network more efficient and reliable by connecting different sources of distributed generators into the existing grid. Basic requirements necessary for the application of SGT using the Nigeria Power System as a case study were discussed.展开更多

The principle is that the smaller the sum, the closer the well to the source kitchen. The approach makes use of carbazoles' interaction with the matrix, which leads to a reduction in their concentration with increasing distance from the source kitchen, allowing prediction of the charging direction. A wide range of compositional variations was observed for C1(806.72–2152.90 lg/g) and C2(767–2469.72 lg/g) carbazoles within the field. Based on these results, we inferred a filling pathway orientation from west to east. This suggests that the source kitchen—the most promising region for oil exploration—is located in the western part of the oil field.展开更多

Methods: The methanol extracts from Piper umbellatum and P. americana were prepared by maceration. To assess relative efficacy of these extracts, the determination of concentrations that were needed to inhibit 50% of enzyme activity was done, whereas, gas chromatography-mass spectrum was used to identify components from extracts that may be responsible for the activities. Results:The tested extracts strongly inhibited β-glucosidase, maltase-glucoamylase, aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase activities with IC50 ranging from(1.07 ± 0.03) to(31.77 ± 1.17) μg/mL.Among the tested extracts, P. americana was the most active against sensitive enzymes(IC50 of1.07 ± 0.03 to 15.63 ± 1.23). But, none of the extracts showed interesting inhibitory effect against β-glucosidase as their percentage inhibitions were less than 16%. From gas chromatographymass spectrum analysis, 10 and 8 compounds were identified in Piper umbellatum and P.americana extracts respectively, using NIST library 2014. Conclusions: Results of this study provide the scientific credential for a prospective usage of these plants to treat diabetes.展开更多

Therefore, the knowledge of focal depth, magnitude, and time distribution of earthquakes along the trenches is needed to investigate the future occurrence of earthquakes in the zones. The oceanic trenches studied, were located from the seismicity map on: latitude +51 ° to+53° and longitude -160° to 176° (Aleutian Trench), latitude +40° to +53° and longitude +148° to+165° (Japan Trench), and latitude -75° to -64° and longitude -15° to +30° (Peru-Chile Trench). The following features of seis- mic events were considered: magnitude distribution, focal depth distribution, and time distribution of earthquake. The results obtained in each trench revealed that the earthquakes increased with time in all the regions. This implies that the lithospheric layer is becoming more unstable. Thus, tectonic stress accumulation is increasing with time. The rate of increase in earthquakes at the Peru-Chile Trench is higher than that of the Japan Trench and the Aleutian Trench. This implies that the convergence of lithospheric plates is higher in the Peru-Chile Trench. Deep earthquakes were observed across all the trenches. The shallow earthquakes were more prominent than intermediate and deep earthquakes in all thetrenches. The seismic events in the trenches are mostly of magnitude range 3.0-4.9. This magnitude range may indi- cate the genesis of mild to moderate tsunamis in the trench zone in near future once sufficient slip would occur with displacement of water column.展开更多

The power generating supplies in Nigeria appear unreliable, rapidly diminishing and expensive. Researches are sparse on operating both energy sources alongside fossil fuel for power generation in order to take advantage of their complementary characters. The aim of this study is to explore renewable sources combined with non-renewable source to generate electricity with the objective of establishing an optimal design for a hybrid solar-wind-diesel energy plant that minimizes cost. The capacity factor of the standalone system was determined for the study area. The cost of energy for the hybrid optimal mix was determined. Levelised cost of energy was also used to determine the cost of energy for standalone power system. The result shows that the energy generated 200 MW hybrid system is 392 GWh with a cost of energy of $0.24/kWh (47.8/kWh). The energy produced can power 39,200 homes in a year. The optimisation shows that the number of solar system, wind and diesel are 699, 1 and 300 respectively. The cost of energy for the standalone system was $0.06/kWh, $0.08/kWh and $0.27/kWh for wind, solar and diesel system. The capacity factor was 56%, 21% and 80% for wind, solar and diesel system. There is a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases released to the environment alongside with cost of energy generation. Hybrid power generation system is good and effective solution for power generation than conventional energy resources.展开更多

文摘Oxidative stress has been identified as one of the factors that affects fertility status. Therefore, these plants have potential to prevent oxidative stress in testes and improve fertility outcomes.
文摘Adolescent/youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services(SRHS)play a vital role in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with adolescent SRH.This review examined studies carried out on adolescent/youth-friendly SRHS with focus on availability, accessibility, utilization as well as perception of health care providers, and adolescents about the services. The study design was systematic review of empirical studies using a well-defined strategy.Online journal was searched comprehensively using Web of Science,Google Scholars databases,PubMed,Medline, and EMBASE.Other sources were identified through the scanning of references of selected sources. The articles selected were between 2016 and 2022 and had qualitative/quantitative and mixed methods. The articles that met the selection criteria were also screened using PRISMA-P guidelines and SPIDER framework for systematic review was further used for inclusion criteria based on the following concepts:sample, phenomenon of interest, design, evaluation and research type.A total number of 32 studies were included in the study and findings were reported based on the five emerging themes. The review showed that majority of the adolescents were not aware of adolescent/youth-friendly SRHS,some health care providers were not also in support of the services which accounted for low utilization of the services among adolescents. The review further showed poor accessibility and nonavailability of AYFSRHS as the only available SRHS were meant for married adults. Therefore, these findings serve as evidence for policy-makers at all the levels of healthcare delivery system to considered all the factors observed in this review and develop strategies that will make adolescent/youth-friendly SRHS available and accessible to adolescents.More so,other stakeholders, especially health care providers must improve their attitude toward provision of adolescent/youth-friendly SRHS.
文摘Objective:This study investigates treatment satisfaction and medication adherence among hypertensive patients attending the medical outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital in Ekiti State,Nigeria.Materials and Methods:The study design was descriptive and cross-sectional using quantitative research strategy.A systematic sampling technique was used in selecting 270 participants;a structured questionnaire was used for data collection.Medication adherence was assessed using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, and treatment satisfaction was assessed using the 14-item Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication. Results:The study findings revealed that majority(73.7%)of the study participants had good knowledge of hypertension, while 44.4%had a good level of treatment satisfaction.Test of association of participants’sociodemographic characteristics revealed age(χ^(2)=23.773,P=0.003)and occupation(χ^(2)=21.251,P=0.019)to be significantly associated with treatment satisfaction. The level of medication adherence by the participants was observed to be relatively poor(50.4%).The educational status(χ^(2)=23.914,P=0.001)and monthly income(χ^(2)=10.406,P=0.034)of the participants showed significant association with medication adherence. Conclusion:The study recommends that improving patients’understanding of their disease and treatment with subsidizing hypertensive medications by the government will enhance medication adherence.
文摘Hypertension(HTN)is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting over 30%of the adult population globally, with a growing incidence rate. This article aims to identify the commonly used herbs for HTN treatment and examine their claims, criticisms, and challenges. It further aims to provide useful recommendations regarding the use of herbs for HTN treatment.HTN complications, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, vision impairment, and renal failure can result in morbidity and mortality. The high cost of conventional medications, which sometimes may not even be available or easily accessible with their unfavorable side effects as well as taking more than one pill per day,has led hypertensive patients, particularly those in rural areas,to explore alternative treatments such as herbal therapies. It is crucial to determine the different modes of action, doses, safety, and efficacy of herbal remedies used in combination with conventional medications to improve treatment adherence and enhance patient outcomes.
文摘Lectin purified from wild underutilized local bean—Otili, Feregede, Pakalai was comparatively characterized and further evaluated for interaction with gastrointestinal bacteria—Esherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This may be a clear indication that lectin from local underutilized wild bean understudy will agglutinate and interact with a gram positive bacteria more than gram negative bacteria.
文摘The purpose of this paper is to build a secured and reliable vehicle anti-theft system which will have the ability to access the vehicle subsystems from a remote location where there is GSM network. And also, the design method involves the interfacing of GSM/GPRS modem module with the vehicle ignition subsystem, and the test result shows that it performs some control actions on the vehicle subsystems from a mobile phone, having taken the advantage of the wide coverage area of some GSM networks. Hence the topic is “Remotely Controlled Vehicle Anti-theft System via GSM Network”.
文摘It is a known fact that the epileptic power situation in Nigeria has become a recurring decimal. Basic requirements necessary for the application of SGT using the Nigeria Power System as a case study were discussed.
文摘The direction of oil charges within a field in the Niger Delta, Nigeria was determined by the sum of differences ranking method of carbazole concentrations after ascertaining other possible geological constraints on their compositional variations. This suggests that the source kitchen—the most promising region for oil exploration—is located in the western part of the oil field.

文摘Objective: To determine inhibitory activity of methanolic leaf extract of Piper umbellatum and Persea americana(P. americana)(traditionally used in Cameroon against diabetes) on β-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, maltase-glucoamylase, aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase activities, enzymes involved in starch digestion or diabetic complications. Conclusions: Results of this study provide the scientific credential for a prospective usage of these plants to treat diabetes.
文摘The occurrence of earthquakes in oceanic tren- ches can pose a tsunami threat to lives and properties in active seismic zones. This magnitude range may indi- cate the genesis of mild to moderate tsunamis in the trench zone in near future once sufficient slip would occur with displacement of water column.
文摘Objective:To assess and compare the relationship between spousal communication, fertility preference, and other factors with contraceptive use among married couples in Ekiti State,Nigeria. Methods:This cross-sectional study was carried out in AdoEkiti Local Government Area of Ekiti State,Nigeria between the 12th of August 2017 and the 15th of February 2018.A pre-tested,semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 976 respondents by a multi-stage sampling technique.Data were analyzed(univariate, bivariate, and binary logistic regression analysis)using SPSS version 24.0.Factors that showed statistical significance(P<0.05)were included in a binary logistic regression to determine significant predictors of contraceptive use. Results:The proportion of respondents currently using contraceptives was 56.9%.The education status of the respondents revealed that those with primary education were more likely to use contraceptives than those without formal education[adjusted odds ratio(aOR)8.4,95%confidence interval(CI)1.97-36.2,P<0.001].Respondents with fair spousal communication were more likely to use contraceptive than those with poor communication(aOR 4.9,95%CI 2.80-8.71,P<0.001).In addition, fertility preference of 4 or less children was found to be significantly associated with contraceptive use(aOR 3.0,95%CI 1.67-5.50,P<0.001)compared to a preference of more than 4 children. Finally, the urban respondents were more likely to use contraceptives than those in the rural setting(aOR 1.7,95%CI 1.16-2.41,P=0.047).Conclusions:Educational status, residential site, spousal communication, and fertility preference significantly influence the level of contraceptive use among married couples.Couples should endeavor to discuss more on issues bordering on their fertility preference and contraceptive issue.Government should formulate policies to improve the rural uptake of contraceptives using identified target interventions.
文摘Solar and wind energy are two of the most viable and sustainable sources of energy due to the tendency of renewal. Hybrid power generation system is good and effective solution for power generation than conventional energy resources.
