The purpose of the present paper is to explore Edgar Lawrence Doctorow’s novel Ragtime(1975)as a masterful adaptation of musical form in fiction.It demonstrates the ways in which the use of musical devices of Ragtime...The purpose of the present paper is to explore Edgar Lawrence Doctorow’s novel Ragtime(1975)as a masterful adaptation of musical form in fiction.It demonstrates the ways in which the use of musical devices of Ragtime shapes the rhythmic/narrative structure of the novel.The article offers the reading of the novel as a musicalized fiction,or,in other words,as a form of musico-literary intermediality.It focuses on the chief characteristics of Doctorow’s novel such as a plurality of independent consciousnesses and a diversity of simultaneous points of view/voices.The novel by its very design is polyphonic.Manipulating polyrhythmic effects,mixed rhythms,repetitive phrases and leitmotifs,Doctorow is experimenting with the rhythm both on micro and macro textual levels.展开更多
The paper considers the lattice of fully invariant subgroups of the cotorsion hull ?when a separable primary group T?is an arbitrary direct sum of torsion-complete groups.The investigation of this problem in the case ...The paper considers the lattice of fully invariant subgroups of the cotorsion hull ?when a separable primary group T?is an arbitrary direct sum of torsion-complete groups.The investigation of this problem in the case of a cotorsion hull is important because endomorphisms in this class of groups are completely defined by their action on the torsion part and for mixed groups the ring of endomorphisms is isomorphic to the ring of endomorphisms of the torsion part if and only if the group is a fully invariant subgroup of the cotorsion hull of its torsion part. In the considered case, the cotorsion hull is not fully transitive and hence it is necessary to introduce a new function which differs from an indicator and assigns an infinite matrix to each element of the cotorsion hull. The relation ?difined on the set ?of these matrices is different from the relation proposed by the autor in the countable case and better discribes the lower semilattice. The use of the relation ?essentially simplifies the verification of the required properties. It is proved that the lattice of fully invariant subgroups of the group is isomorphic to the lattice of filters of the lower semilattice.展开更多

Investigation of the issue of full transitivity of a group is essentially helpful in studying its fully invariant subgroups as well as the lattice formed by these subgroups. It is proved that in the considered case, the cotorsion hull is not fully transitive. A lemma is proposed, which can be used in the study of full transitivity of a group and in other cases.展开更多
The kinetics of formation of crystal boron was studied by X-ray structure and differential-thermal analyses. The enthalpy of transition of amorphous boron to crystal boron with formation of an intermediate non-equilib...The kinetics of formation of crystal boron was studied by X-ray structure and differential-thermal analyses. The enthalpy of transition of amorphous boron to crystal boron with formation of an intermediate non-equilibrium phase was determined by the calorimetric method. Studies were carried out by using the differential scanning calorimeter SETARAM. Amorphous boron received by diboron cracking was used as the starting material. The test sample is cha- racterized by stability even at a high temperature. When heated, amorphous boron first transforms to crystal boron of α-modification, and during a further heating, there occur several phase transitions, which means the transition of α-rhombohedric crystal boron to the β'?and β''?metastable states. Studies of various modifications were carried out by radiographic and electro-optic methods. The high sensitiveness of the calorimeter made it possible to control temperature in the oven, make records and detect even the smallest thermal effects.展开更多
Based on the present simultaneous hydrometeorological data and the analysis of the actual materials obtained by our studies, we can suppose the fact of the occurrence of powerful underground floodings in the hydrodyna...Based on the present simultaneous hydrometeorological data and the analysis of the actual materials obtained by our studies, we can suppose the fact of the occurrence of powerful underground floodings in the hydrodynamic system of the Tskaltubo Cave. The simultaneous records of the water levels (discharges) of the underground rivers and atmospheric precipitation show that there are importantly clear peaks in the hydrographs, when the diurnal sums of precipitations reach or exceed 50 mm in all observation points (in all surface catchment basins defined by us). Though, a long-term observation revealed that only 50 mm of precipitation diurnal sum is not enough for the formation of strong underground flooding in the cave hydrodynamic system;a rainy period of several days should precede such kind of precipitation so that the soil was well saturated with water. Only under these conditions is expected a powerful flooding. As the analysis of the dangerous flooding formation mechanism showed, what is important is not the abundance of diurnal precipitation and their intensity, but the combination of factors such as: the total amount and duration of precipitation of the predecessor period, precipitation amount during the flooding maximum development days and the coverage rate of the cave system’s surface water catchment area.展开更多
