Background Several studies have shown that afternoon napping promotes cognitive function in the elderly;on the other hand,some studies have shown opposite results.This current study further examined the relationship between afternoon napping and cognitive function in the ageing Chinese population.Methods A total of 2214 elderly were included(napping group:n=1534;non-napping group:n=680).They all received cognitive evaluations by the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment,the Mini-Mental State Examination,and the Chinese version of the Neuropsychological Test Battery.Among all the subjects,739 elderly volunteered to take blood lipid tests.Results Significant differences in cognitive function and blood lipids were observed between the napping and the non-napping groups.Afternoon napping was associated with better cognitive function including orientation,language,and memory in the present study.Subjects with the habit of afternoon napping also showed a higher level of triglyceride than the non-napping subjects.Conclusion The results demonstrated that afternoon napping was related to better cognitive function in the Chinese ageing population. 展开更多

Background:China has more cases of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)than any other country in the world.As training to recognize and manage dementia is in its early stage,it is important to study clinicians’current prescription preferences for treating patients with AD.Methods:This study surveyed neurologists,psychiatrists,and general physicians(GPs)in Shanghai who had outpatients with AD,using a questionnaire asking about their prescription preferences for these patients.Results:Among the 148 clinicians in the study,26.4%were psychiatrists,44.6%were neurologists,and 29.1%were GPs.The groups did not differ significantly in age,gender,or their monthly cases of new patients with mild or moderate AD(P>0.05).Most clinicians prescribed Cholinesterase inhibitors(ChEIs),including Huperzine A,but there were significant group-differences in prescribing specific ChEIs(P<0.05).The daily dosages of ChEI and Memantine prescribed by all three groups were small(P>0.05),and all three groups prescribed piracetam,ergot,and ginkgo biloba drugs.All three groups also tended to treat AD patients with a combination of antidepressants and anxiolytics,although psychiatrists were significantly more likely than neurologists to combine antipsychotics with other drugs(P<0.05).Conclusion:Clinicians in Shanghai prescribed low doses of ChEIs and Memantine for patients with AD.A relatively high proportion also prescribed cognitive enhancers,which lack evidence-based support of their use,and antipsychotics.There is a need for more training about treating patients with AD and for clinicians to standardize their clinical practice. 展开更多

Background Prospective studies suggest that tea consumption may decrease the risk for cognitive impairment in late life.However,little research has examined the association between tea consumption and cognitive performance across multiple domains.In addition,no research has examined the benefit of tea consumption on cognitive performance among older adults with existing impairment.Aims The current study examined the association between tea consumption and performance on tasks of global cognitive function,episodic memory and executive function in cognitively healthy(CH)older adults and older adults with mild cognitive impairment(MCI).Methods The analytical sample included 1849 community-dwelling older adults from the Shanghai Brain Aging Study(65.6%female,mean age of 69.50(8.02)years).Following ascertainment of cognitive function,816 were categorised as MCI.In addition to completion of a demographics questionnaire,participants reported their tea consumption and completed a battery of tests to measure global cognitive function,episodic memory and working memory.Results Independent analyses of covariance revealed a significant association between tea consumption and measures of episodic memory;however,these associations were restricted to CH older adults but not older adults with MCI.Tea consumption was not associated with working memory performance.Conclusions The current study suggests that the benefit of tea consumption is restricted to cognitively healthy older adults and does not extend to older adults with MCI. 展开更多

背景:老年抑郁症是老年人常见且危害性大的精神疾病之一,但目前对晚发型老年抑郁症与之相关的社会、心理学及脑结构因素之间的联系的研究较少。目的 :探讨晚发型老年抑郁症(LOD)的相关因素。方法 :共纳入24例首次发病年龄大于60岁的晚... 背景:老年抑郁症是老年人常见且危害性大的精神疾病之一,但目前对晚发型老年抑郁症与之相关的社会、心理学及脑结构因素之间的联系的研究较少。目的 :探讨晚发型老年抑郁症(LOD)的相关因素。方法 :共纳入24例首次发病年龄大于60岁的晚发型老年抑郁症患者(诊断符合ICD-10抑郁症的诊断标准)和23例健康老人作为研究的对象。通过视觉评估量表:Fazekas量表评估脑白质高信号的严重程度,MTA量表评估内侧颞叶萎缩程度,结合一般人口学资料及社会学资料,寻找晚发型老年抑郁症的影响因素。结果:两组间的年龄(t=0.419, p=0.678)、性别(X^2=1.705,p=0.244)、教育程度(t=1.478, p=0.146)均无统计学差异。两组人群在脑白质高信号评分(WMH)、脑室旁高信号评分(PWMH)、宗教信仰(有或无)和家庭和睦(是或否)亚项上存在差异(X^2=7.817, p=0.008;Fisher精确检验:p=0.031;Fisher精确检验:p=0.265;Fisher精确检验:p=0.253),而逐步线性回归的结果显示,脑白质高信号评分、宗教信仰(有或无)和家庭和睦(是或否)是老年抑郁的相关因素。结论 :脑白质高信号是晚发型老年抑郁症的风险因素,而具有宗教信仰和/或家庭和睦是其保护性因素。 展开更多

The presence of protein corona on the surface of nanoparticles modulates their physiological interactions such as cellular association and targeting property.It has been shown that α-mangostin(αM)-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-lactide)(PEG-PLA)nanoparticles(NP-αM)specifically increased low density lipoprotein receptor(LDLR)expression in microglia and improved clearance of amyloid beta(Aβ)after multiple administration.However,how do the nanoparticles cross the blood‒brain barrier and access microglia remain unknown.Here,we studied the brain delivery property of PEG-PLA nanoparticles under different conditions,finding that the nanoparticles exhibited higher brain transport efficiency and microglia uptake efficiency afterαM loading and multiple administration.To reveal the mechanism,we performed proteomic analysis to characterize the composition of protein corona formed under various conditions,finding that both drug loading and multiple dosing affect the composition of protein corona and subsequently influence the cellular uptake of nanoparticles in b.End3 and BV-2 cells.Complement proteins,immunoglobulins,RAB5A and CD36 were found to be enriched in the corona and associated with the process of nanoparticles uptake.Collectively,we bring a mechanistic understanding about the modulator role of protein corona on targeted drug delivery,and provide theoretical basis for engineering brain or microglia-specific targeted delivery system. 展开更多
