Planar sliding is one of the frequently observed types of failure in rock slopes.Kinematic analysis is a classic and widely used method to examine the potential failure modes in rock masses.The accuracy of planar sliding kinematic analysis is significantly influenced by the value assigned to the lateral limit angleγlim.However,the assignment ofγlim is currently used generally based on an empirical criterion.This study aims to propose an approach for determining the value ofγlim in deterministic and probabilistic kinematic planar sliding analysis.A new perspective is presented to reveal thatγlim essentially influences the probability of forming a potential planar sliding block.The procedure to calculate this probability is introduced using the block theory method.It is found that the probability is correlated with the number of discontinuity sets presented in rock masses.Thus,different values ofγlim for rock masses with different sets of discontinuities are recommended in both probabilistic and deterministic planar sliding kinematic analyses;whereas a fixed value ofγlim is commonly assigned to different types of rock masses in traditional method.Finally,an engineering case was used to compare the proposed and traditional kinematic analysis methods.The error rates of the traditional method vary from 45%to 119%,while that of the proposed method ranges between 1%and 17%.Therefore,it is likely that the proposed method is superior to the traditional one. 展开更多

Elastic analyses for 18 RC structure models with and without staircases are conducted and compared to study the influence of the staircase on the stiffness, displacements and internal forces of the structures. To capture the yielding development and damage mechanism of frame structures, elasto-plastic analysis is carried out for one of the 18 models. Based on the features observed in the analyses, a new type of staircase design i.e., isolating them from the master structure to eliminate the effect of K-type struts, is proposed and discussed. It is concluded that the proposed method of staircase isolation is effective and feasible for engineering design, and does not significantly increase the construction cost. 展开更多

Isolation bearings and dampers are often installed between piers and superstructures to reduce the seismic responses of bridges under large earthquakes. This paper presents a novel steel damper for bridges. The damper employs steel plates as energy dissipation components, and adopts a vertical free mechanism to achieve a large deformation capacity. Quasi-static tests using displacement-controlled cyclic loading and numerical analyses using a finite element program called ABAQUS are conducted to investigate the behavior of the damper, and a design methodology is proposed based on the tests and numerical analyses. Major conclusions obtained from this study are as follows: (1) the new dampers have stable hysteresis behavior under large displacements; (2) finite element analyses are able to simulate the behavior of the damper with satisfactory accuracy; and (3) simplified design methodology of the damper is effective. 展开更多

One of the challenges in civil engineering is to find an innovative means of suppressing the structural vibration due to earthquake and wind loadings. This paper presents an approach for effectively suppressing vibrations of a structure with variable friction damper using a new Bang-Bang control input. A continuous function of story velocities is used to represent the improved control to reduce chatter, high frequency switching and avoid instability. With a genetic algorithm, the amplitudes of control and preloading friction forces individually prescribed in the controller and damper are optimized for enhancing the seismic performance of buildings. The control strategy for the friction damper is proposed for a three story building with one variable friction damper installed at the first story for seismic reduction. The numerical results indicate that a better reduction of peak response accelerations of floors can be achieved than those of the unmodified controller, and the adaptability of the control system is also improved greatly by comparison with the reduction ratios of the structural response energy excited by different earthquake intensities. 展开更多

The specimens include one traditional welded flange-bolted web connection, one traditional fully welded connection, four beam flange strengthened connections, three beam flange weakened connections, and one through-diaphragm connection. The test results show that the connections with flange cover plates or with partly cut beam flanges satisfy the beam plastic rotation demand for ductile MRFs. From the measured stress profiles along the beam flange and beam web depth, the mechanics of brittle fracture at the end of the beam is discussed. Design recommendations for steel beam-to-column moment connections are proposed. 展开更多

Surface forces at the fluid-structure interface allow designers to investigate the effects of fluid flow on the structural deformation and stresses. Possible failure modes have been compared with different loads from steady thermal flow analysis results. CFD code SC/Tetra and FEA code ANSYS are used in this study. These studies can be used in protecting certain fatigue failures for pipeline joints under critical cyclic load conditions from both thermal expansion and hydraulic pressure in municipal and environmental engineering applications as well as oil and gas fields. 展开更多

The energy efficiency design of the exterior wall in the buildings of the hot summer and cold winter zone of China should consider the heat prevention in summer and the heat insulation in winter. The self-insulation of the exterior?wall is a more feasible design to satisfy the energy efficiency of buildings in the?zone. However, the systematic research is urgently needed for the self-insulation of the exterior wall in the hot summer and cold winter zone of China. The paper tested the thermal performance of the common non-clay materials such as shale sintered hollow brick, sand autoclaved aerated concrete block, etc. by means of indoor experiments. The energy efficiency effect of the common materials was verified using dynamic calculation soft PKPM and several constitutions of exterior wall with different main bricks and insulation materials on the heat bridge were simulated, too. Besides, the tests of the thermal performance of exterior wall in real constructions were carried out to testify the practical effect of the recommended constitutions of exterior wall with different main bricks and insulation materials on the heat bridge. The conclusions are: the physical and thermal properties of the six non-clay wall material are better than the clay porous brick;the thermal performance of the non-clay brick can be improved obviously through the rational arrangement of the holes;shale sintered hollow brick after increasing the holes and rationalizing the hole arrangement and sand autoclaved aerated concrete block are recommended for buildings in the hot summer and cold winter area of China. The dynamic calculation results show that the thermal performances?of the non-clay materials are all satisfied with the energy efficiency;The heat transfer coefficient of the exterior wall with composition?③,?in which?the main wall was sand autoclaved aerated concrete block and the material on the heat bridge was sand autoclaved aerated concrete plate, is the smallest among the three recommended compositions. 展开更多

This paper presented an investigation on a stiffened joint in practical engineering which was between concrete-filled steel tubular column and steel beam with narrow outer diaphragm and partial joint penetration welds. Through the low-frequency cyclic loading test, the cyclic behavior and failure mode of the specimen were investigated. The results of the test indicated the failure mode and bearing capacity of the specimen which were influenced by the axial compression ratio of the concrete-filled tubular column. On the contrary, the inner diaphragm and inner stiffeners had limited impacts on the hysteretic behavior of the joint. There was no hysteresis damage fracture on the narrow outer diaphragm connected to the concrete-filled steel tubular column with partial joint penetration welds. Due to the excellent ductility and energy dissipating capacity, the proposed joint could be applied to the seismic design of high-rise buildings in highly intensive seismic region, but axial compression ratio should be controlled to avoid unfavorable failure modes. 展开更多

This paper presents a constitutive model based on Ramberg-Osgood equation to describe the hysteresis material behavior of structural carbon steel with nominal yield strength between 235 to 420 N/mm^2. The proposed model was calibrated against a series of cyclic material tests with strain amplitude varying from 0.5% to 2.0%. A simple relationship between the modular parameter K and the yield strengthfy was proposed. The calibrated Ramberg-Osgood model revealed excellent agreement with the experimental results and captured further the experimental behavior of test specimens with nominal yield strength of 460 N/mm^2. The proposed constitutive model was also adopted in conjunction with the combined kinematic/isotropic materials description in ABAQUS to mimic a full scale experimental test under cyclic loading. 目的:常规索穹顶结构具有受预应力影响较大、不易于铺设刚性屋面等缺陷,且施工过程中存在变形较大及拉索松垂等问题,施工模拟难度较大。本文探讨一种新型索穹顶结构的构件性能和受力特点,研究结构施工过程分析的可行性及最优布置形式。... 目的:常规索穹顶结构具有受预应力影响较大、不易于铺设刚性屋面等缺陷,且施工过程中存在变形较大及拉索松垂等问题,施工模拟难度较大。本文探讨一种新型索穹顶结构的构件性能和受力特点,研究结构施工过程分析的可行性及最优布置形式。创新点:1.提出一种易于铺设刚性屋面的新型拉梁式索穹顶结构;2.提出一种累积牵引提升施工技术;3.通过非线性动力有限元找形分析方法(NDFEM)实现施工模拟过程。方法:1.通过试验分析,证明NDFEM法可以实现拉梁式索穹顶的施工过程模拟(图11–13和表4);2.通过理论推导,对比两铰拉梁、三铰拉梁以及悬索单元在跨中集中荷载和均布荷载作用下的变形和受力特点(公式9–17);3.通过数值模拟分析,运用累积牵引提升施工方法(图4)在施工过程分析中对机构铰的布置形式进行可行性研究,并提出最优分布模式。结论:1.不同于常规索穹顶结构只受拉力的脊索,拉梁可以同时承受拉力与弯矩,并且弯曲应力较小,不易失稳;2.整体牵引提升可以很好地完成拉梁式索穹顶结构的施工成型过程;在此过程中应设置合理的机构铰将拉梁网格转化为机构;3.NDFEM找形分析方法能够有效跟踪分析施工全过程,分析精度较高;4.仅在中拉梁或内拉梁上布置机构铰可以在保证结构性能的同时最大限度地减少后期施工的工作量,为最优铰节点分布模式。 展开更多
