Enicostemma littorale (Blume), the folk medicine is used for rheumatic pain and it was selected for scientific validation. The 85% methanolic extract obtained from the whole plant of Enicostemma littorale has been assessed for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. The analgesic activity has been evaluated by hot plate and tail immersion method and the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities are evaluated by Complete Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritic model. The results of the evaluation of analgesic activity in hot plate and tail immersion method revealed that the extract exhibits significant activity at 150 mg/kg body weight and the effect is found to increase dose dependently. In Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritis, Enicostemma littorale is found to decrease the paw volume (15.81%). Significant protection is also observed by elevating antioxidant enzymes. In conclusion, the 85% methanolic extract of Enicostemma littorale possesses significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritic model in rats. 展开更多

The present investigation was considered in arraying of antidiabetic and antioxidant activity from dietary flavonoid loaded fraction of Acanthophora spicifera(A.spicifera,Family:Rhodomelaceae)on streptozotocin(STZ)induced oxidative stress rats.The testings were acted upon male rats,which were alienated into five groups:control group,diabetic group(single dose of 65 mg/kg,streptozotocin(STZ)i.p.),diabetic with insulin(6 IU),and diabetic with flavonoid rich fraction groups(FRF)at 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight,given orally for 21 days.The blood glucose level was determined at different week intermissions.The antioxidant consequences of FRF on STZ-induced diabetic rats were determined by the estimations of the oxidative stress marker like malonyldialdehyde and antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione in tissue homogenates of heart,liver and kidney.FRF treatment of diabetic rats significantly(P<0.05)diminishes the blood glucose altitudes to normal in contrast with diabetic rats.However,FRF administration,significantly decreased the malonyldialdehyde(MDA)and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT)and glutathione levels(GSH)in diabetic rats.The outcome designates that FRF fraction from red algae A.spicifera was potent anti diabetic and antioxidant asset against STZ induced diabetes and oxidative tissue breakups.©2016 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved. 展开更多

This study was aimed at evaluating the anti-diabetic potential of passion fruit Passiflora edulis(EPE) extracts in diabetic rats, following Streptozotocin(STZ) induced oxidative stress. Thirty adult Wistar rats were divided into five groups, with six rats in each group. The control rats were injected intraperitoneally with citrate buffer(pH 4.5). The remaining groups of rats were administered single dose of 45 mg·kg-1 of STZ by intraperitoneal route to induce diabetes. The diabetic animals were treated with 250 and 500 mg·kg-1 of EPE and glibenclamide 0.6 mg·kg-1 for fifteen days by oral route. Blood glucose, end organ oxidative stress marker, and anti-oxidants were assayed. Further, histopathological investigation of pancreas was studied at the end of the experimentation. The results revealed that subacute administration of EPE significantly(P < 0.001) controlled the blood glucose level in the diabetic rats. In addition, EPE extract protected the end organs by restoring the anti-oxidants enzyme, significantly increasing super oxide dismutase level(SOD) and decreasing catalase(CAT) and TBARS level in visceral organs. In conclusion, that EPE extracts showed anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant potential against streptozotocin-induced diabetes. 展开更多
