This article lists all possible conversion equations of influence coefficients(ICs)with different formats when some of these are known to handle two-plane balancing tasks with no or less trial weight runs.There are two approaches for two-plane balancing.One can treat it as a multi-plane balance problem involving a 2×2 matrix of complex ICs where two direct ICs along with two cross-effect ICs are generated so that correction weights at one or two balance planes can be determined.One can also apply a static pare(in-phase)and/or couple pair(180 degrees out-of-phase)weights for balancing.The latter approach has been used quite often in the field,especially on steam turbine and generator rotors.Dependent on vibration mode shapes and combinations as well as balance plane accessibility,sometimes applying static or couple pair weights can be a wise choice;other times weights at one or two end planes are needed.There are totally 4 possible sets of IC data due to weights at plane 1,plane 2,static pair,and couple pair.IC data would typically be obtained by applying trial weights followed by trial weight runs.It is found,however,that all these IC data can be converted easily without trial weight runs once any two of 4 sets are known.The above findings and conversion equations have been obtained analytically and verified by experimental results.Real cases are given to demonstratetheirapplications. 展开更多

Subsea development is moving constantly toward simplification,digitalization,and cost-out strategies because the exploration and production of hydrocarbons are moving toward deeper and remote sea water areas.Usage of all-electric subsea technology instead of hydraulic technology is growing and will be the future of subsea systems due to the former’s environmental and functional advantages and reduced costs.The benefits of all-electric subsea systems are health,safety,and environment(HSE)and improved reliability,flexibility,and functionality compared with traditional hydraulic-electrical systems.Existing electrohydraulic technology for a typical subsea system,hydraulic and electric actuators,and subsea manifold valves including valve types and selection philosophy have been reviewed in this paper.Some major worldwide oil companies such as Equinor and Schlumberger have successful experiences with subsea electric actuators.Considering the benefits of all-electric technology especially in terms of cost and HSE,as well as successful experiences of two major oil companies,further research in this area is warranted.One of the gaps in existing reviewed literature is the effect of using all-electric actuators for manifold valves.Thus,three main questions related to electric actuator selection,requirement of safety integrity level(SIL),and effect of using electric actuators on manifold valve selection have been addressed and answered.Forty hydraulic actuated manifold valves from nine past subsea projects in different parts of the world,mainly Africa and Australia,have been selected for the analysis of all-electric actuators.Results show that 93%of the valves require spring-return electric actuators,whereas 7%can be operated with conventional electric actuators without any spring.The manifold valves do not require SIL certification because they are not connected to an emergency shut down system.Introducing the electric actuators to the manifold valve will not change the valve selection philosophy. 展开更多

Modern processing plants use a variety of control loop networks to deliver a finished product to the market.Such control loops,like control valves,are designed to keep process variables such as pressure,temperature,speed,flow,etc.within the appropriate operating range and to ensure a quality product is produced.All control valves have a bypass so that production can proceed if maintenance is needed for the control valve as part of the control loop.The important point is that in both operation and maintenance situations,the bypass valve and the control valve should have approximately the same flow capacity to provide nearly the same amount of pressure.This paper presents a case study in seawater service on the selection of manual bypass valves for a 16″control valve in class 150 and titanium material.A 16″butterfly valve of class 150 was chosen for the control valve bypass,which provided a much higher flow capacity than the control valve.In this paper,four solutions are recommended to achieve the same coefficient value(Cv)for the control and bypass valve.Using the reduced size butterfly valve could be the cheapest and best solution.On the other hand,selecting the same control valve for bypass line is the most expensive but maybe the most reliable solution.Using a flow orifice for throttling could be ranked as the second expensive option and the second reliable one.Selection of butterfly valve for throttling is the second cheapest option,but it has the least reliability.Different parameters such as space and weight saving,cost as well as reliability have been considered in evaluation of different solutions. 展开更多

An actuator is a machine or component installed on the top of an industrial valve for automatically moving and controlling the valve.The performance of a valve is largely dependent on its actuator.An actuator can be hydraulic,pneumatic,or electrical.This paper focuses on hydraulic actuators,which are common for large size and high-pressure class ball valves.Hydraulic actuators can be either single-acting(spring return)or double-acting.Single-acting actuators return to safe mode in case of failure.However,double-acting actuators have a fail-as-is function and cannot keep the valves open or closed in case of failure.This research used a combination of theoretical and experimental approaches.The paper discusses two case studies in offshore industry projects in which double-acting hydraulic actuators were selected instead of single-acting,and possible design impacts are discussed.A theoretical review is given in three papers about operating torque for ball valves,optimization of shutdown valve actuator weight,and design and analysis of hydraulic actuators.These three papers were selected for review to connect the valve required torque with actuator sizing and selection,finding practical approaches to optimize the actuator weight as well as develop a theoretical model to calculate the actuator thickness and dimensions for the 38”CL1500 ball valve in the Johan Sverdrup project.The proposed formulas and calculations used for sizing the 38”CL1500 ball valves were validated through a finite element analysis model. 展开更多

Hydraulic systems provide a clean and stable supply of hydraulic fluid for subsea valves and actuators installed on the subsea bed in subsea production systems.Subsea control systems are used for contemporary subsea fields instead of installing the control system on topside.Although all-electric subsea systems are state-of-the-art with benefits such as health,safety,and environment improvement,as well as efficiency and lower cost,hydraulic systems are still used for the development of many subsea fields.One of the main questions in the selection of a subsea hydraulic field is whether to choose an open or closed loop hydraulic system.The main characteristic of an open loop hydraulic system is that the hydraulic fluid is discharged into the marine environment during the actuation of the subsea valves.Conversely,the hydraulic fluid is returned to the topside facilities through an umbilical system in a closed loop system.Given that closed loop systems are more eco-friendly,the main question in this research is to examine the effect of the actuator connection of the closed loop system on actuator design.Two cases of actuated valves connected to a closed loop system are analyzed in this paper.The first is a 71/16-in.subsea slab gate valve in the pressure class of 517 bar with a linear spring return fail-safe close(FSC)actuator located on a manifold branch.The data indicates that the piston rod and cylinder diameter of the FSC linear actuator should be increased by some millimeters due to the accumulation of hydraulic oil at the bottom of the actuator.The hydraulic oil in the closed loop system helps in closing the actuator and spring force,so the spring constant and torque should be reduced as a result.The second case involves a 16-in.subsea ball valve in the pressure class of 517 bar with a double-acting fail-as-is rack and pinion actuator.The conclusion in this case is to avoid making any change in the design of double-acting actuator in connection to the closed loop system. 展开更多

Synthesis and characterization of hybrid fluorescent superparamagnetic core-shell particles of Fe@C-CNx composition are presented for the first time. The prepared Fe@C-CNx hybrid nanoparticles were found to possess multifunctionality by exhibiting strong superparamagnetic properties and bright fluorescence emissions at 500 nm after the excitation with light in the UV-visible range. Fe@C-CNx also exhibits photocatalytic activities for organic dye degradation comparable to pure amorphous CNx with reusability through magnetic separation. The combination of magnetic and fluorescent properties of core-shell Fe@C-CNx nanoparticles opens opportunities for their application as sensors and magnet manipulated reusable photocatalysts. Superparamagnetic Fe@C core-shell nanoparticles were used as the template material in the synthesis, where the carbon shell was functionalized through one-step free-radical addition of alkyl groups terminated with carboxylic acid moieties. The method utilizes the organic acyl peroxide of dicarboxylic acid (succinic acid peroxide) as a non-oxidant functional free radical precursor for functionalization. Further, covalently functionalized succinyl-Fe@C core-shell nanoparticles were coated with the amorphous carbon nitride (CNx) generated by an in-situ solution-based chemical reaction of cyanuric chloride with lithium nitride. A detailed physicochemical characterization of the microstructure, magnetic and fluorescence properties of the synthesized hybrid nanoparticles is provided. 展开更多

Typical rotors such as those on steam turbine or generator are often supported by two bearings with two balance planes at both ends.Vibrations are monitored by a pair of proximity probes at each bearing.There are two approaches to reduce 1X vibration due to unbalance at both ends via balancing with influence coefficient method.The first approach is to treat it as a multiple-plane balancing problem involving 2x2 matrix of complex influence coefficients.The second approach is to treat it as two single-plane balance problems using static(in-phase)and couple(180 degree out-of-phase)components,respectively.Conversion equations of influence coefficients between these two approaches have been found previously by the author.The corresponding spreadsheets that convert influence coefficients between these two formats are presented in the current paper.The paper shows effectiveness of these conversion equations in dealing with real balancing problems in the field.A detailed balance case is presented to demonstrate how the conversion equations are used to reduce vibration effectively. 展开更多

There are a great variety of commercial nickel alloys mainly because nickel is able to dissolve a large amount of alloying elements while maintaining a single ductile austenitic phase. Nickel alloys are generally designed for and used in highly aggressive environments, for example, those where stainless steels may experience pitting corrosion or environmentally assisted cracking. While nickel alloys are generally resistant to pitting corrosion in chloride-containing environments, they may be prone to crevice corrosion attack. Addition of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten increases the localized corrosion resistance of nickel alloys. This review on the resistance to localized corrosion of nickel alloys includes specific environments such as those present in oil and gas upstream operations, in the chemical process industry and in seawater service. 展开更多

This study evaluated the hydrocarbon-bearing potential of Upper Jurassic marine source rocks in the Qiangtang (羌塘) Basin through a comprehensive organic geochemical analysis of the samples from a large number of outcrops in different structural units to predict the location of favorable hydro- carbon kitchens, based on the evaluation standards of Mesozoic marine source rocks in the Qiangtang Ba- sin. Rocks' depositional environment, thickness and organic geochemistry feature were analyzed in this study. The principal controlling factors of the occurrences of favorable source rocks were analyzed. Upper Jurassic Suowa (索瓦) Formation source rocks are mainly platform limestone in the Dongcuo (洞错)-Hulu (葫芦) Lake deep sag and Tupocuo (吐坡错)-Baitan (白滩) Lake deep sag. Lithologically, the Suowa Fro- mation is made up of a suite of marls in intra-platform sags, micrites and black shales, which were all de- posited in the closed, deep and static water depositional environment. Marl could form hydrocarbon-rich source rocks and its organic matter type is mainly II type in mature to highly-mature stage, the limestone forms a medium-level source rock. In addition, the favorable source kitchen of limestone is larger than that of mudstone. This study provides an important reference for the evaluation of Jurassic marine source rocks and for prediction of petroleum resources in the Qiangtang Basin. 展开更多

Magnesium metal(Mg)is a promising material for stent applications due to its biocompatibility and ability to be resorbed by the body.Manufacturing of stents by laser cutting has become an industry standard.Our alternative approach uses photo-chemical etching to transfer a pattern of the stent onto a Mg sheet.In this study,we present three stages of creating and validating a stent prototype,which includes design and simulation using finite element analysis(FEA),followed by fabrication based on AZ31 alloy and,finally,in vivo testing in peripheral arteries of domestic pigs.Due to the preliminary character of this study,only six stents were implanted in two domestic farm pigs weighing 25-28 kg and they were evaluated after 28 days,with an interim follow-up on day 14.The left and right superficial femoral,the left iliac,and the right renal artery were selected for this study.The diameters of the stented artery segments were evaluated at the time of implantation,on day 14 and then,finally,on day 28,by quantitative vessel analysis(QVA)using fluoroscopic imaging.Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT)imaging displayed some malposition,breaks,stacking,and protrusion into the lumen at the proximal,distal,and mid-sections of the stented arteries.The stents degraded with time,but simultaneously became embedded in the intima.After 28 days,the animals were euthanized,and explanted vessels were fixed for micro-CT imaging and histology studies.Micro-CT imaging revealed stent morphological and volumetric changes due to the in-body degradation.An in vivo corrosion rate of 0.75 mm/year was obtained by the CT evaluation.The histology suggested no-life threatening effects,although moderate injury,inflammation,and endothelialization scores were observed. 展开更多

During fluid injection into a multilayered reservoir,a different pressure gradient is generated across the face of each permeable layer.This pressure gradient generates driving forces in the wellbore during well shut-in that causes the injected fluid moves from higher pressure layers to lower pressure layers,a phenomenon known as interwell cross-flow.Cross-flow behavior depends on the initial pressure in the permeable layers and may be referred to as natural cross-flow(identical or natural initial pressures)and forced cross-flow(different initial pressures because of exploitation).Cross-flow may induce sand production and liquefaction in the higher pressure layers as well as formation damage,filter cake build-up and permeability reduction in the lower pressure layers.Thus,understanding cross-flow during well shut-in is important from a production and reservoir engineering perspective,particularly in unconsolidated or poorly consolidated sandstone reservoirs.Natural and forced cross-flow is modeled for some injection wells in an oil reservoir located at North Sea.The solution uses a transient implicit finite difference approach for multiple sand layers with different permeabilities separated by impermeable shale layers.Natural and forced cross-flow rates for each reservoir layer during shut-in are calculated and compared with different production logging tool(PLT)measurements.It appears that forced cross-flow is usually more prolonged and subject to a higher flow rate when compared with natural cross-flow,and is thus worthy of more detailed analysis. 展开更多
