Assessing the Efficacy of Wheat-Soybean Based Intercropping System at Different Plant Densities in Bambili, Cameroon

Wheat is one of the most important cereals in the world, serving as a staple for millions globally. In the wake of the geopolitical crisis between Russia and Ukraine, it has become incumbent for many countries to invest in wheat production. Improving cropping systems for wheat production is paramount. Intercropping cereals with legumes has tremendous advantages. Therefore, this study was designed to optimize wheat production by intercropping it with soybean at different densities. Between March and August 2023, a randomized complete block design trial was conducted in Bambili, North West of Cameroon with treatments T1 (wheat monocrop at 200,000 plants ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>), T2 (soybean monocrop at 250,000 plants ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>), T3 (200,000 wheat and 125,000 soybean ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>), T4 (100,000 wheat and 250,000 soybean ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>), T5 (200,000 wheat and 250,000 soybean ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>) and T6 (100,000 wheat and 125,000 soybean ha<sup>−</sup><sup>1</sup>). Results revealed that growth parameters of wheat were not significantly influenced by monocrop or intercrop. The yield of wheat was significantly higher in the monocrop than the intercrop treatments, with slight variation amongst the intercrop treatments. Soybean yield was higher in the monocrop than in the intercrop, with no variations amongst the intercrop treatments. Only the land equivalence ratio (LER) for T5 was greater than 1.0. The competitive ratio for T5 was 0.54 for wheat and 1.90 for soybean, comparatively lower than the other monocrop treatments. Intercropping wheat and soybean at 200,000:250,000 ratio is recommended. 展开更多

This paper reports a field survey undertaken to determine the availability of raw material for palm kernel oil commercial production for industrial applications. Both industrial and artisanal wastes from palm kernel oil production were also surveyed as raw material (palm kernel seeds) for green energy production. Results of the field study show that 22% of palm kernel seeds (which represents tons of waste) resulting from palm oil processing plants are dumped while at the artisanal level, 80% of palm kernel seed waste is dumped. Analysis of field study data show<span>s</span><span> that large amounts of waste palm kernel seeds are available to enable large scale production of palm kernel oil (PKO) for desirable industrial applications in green energy production. The paper also reports on the physical and chemical properties of Cameroon palm kernel oil (PKO). Palm kernel oil was extracted using mechanical press and solvent extraction. The palm kernel oil (PKO) from Cameroon was analyzed by standard physico-chemical methods. Food safety is to be a vital component of food security, with mycotoxin contamination, a major contributing factor. In linewith this, this study aimed at investigating the effect of maize maturity at harvest, and processing techniques on the aflatoxin andfumonisin levels in maize and maize products. Three maize maturity stages (80, 85, and 90 days after sowing), two drying processes(sun and barn drying), three storage periods (one, two and three months) and subsequent maize derivatives under these conditionswere sampled. These were analysed for total aflatoxins and total fumonisins using quantitative ELISA and samples with totalaflatoxins and total fumonisins exceeding regulated levels were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS) to determine the sub-types of toxins present. Results obtained showed that all analyzed samples were contaminatedwith total aflatoxins (range: 0.8 to 20 μg/kg) and total fumonisins (range: 10 to 5990 μg/kg). Sun or barn drying for one weekfollowed by one month usual storage resulted in significant total fumonisins contamination, emphasizing the need of at least twoweeks of drying maize. It is one of the leading identifiable cause of preterm deliveries, and an important cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.</span><b> </b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of PPROM, to identify its associated factors and to evaluate the </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">early outcome (within 72 hrs after delivery) following PPROM at the Ba</span><span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">menda Regional Hospital (BRH). </span><b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Methods: </span></b><span style="font-family:Verdana;">A cross-sectional study was</span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> conducted in March and April 2020. Three hundred and eighty-seven women who delivered at the labour room of the BRH were included in this study. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to obtain data. The cases of PPROM were women who had lost amniotic fluid continuously before hospitalisation and whose gestational age was between 28 weeks + 0 days and 36 weeks + 6 days.
