In this paper, high-resolution 3D seismic data and multibeam data based on seismic sedimentology and geomorphology are employed to assist in identifying submarine landslides. In addition, deposition models are proposed that are based on specific geological structures and features, and which illustrate the local stress field over entire submarine landslides in deep-water areas of the SCS. The SCS is one of the largest fluvial sediment sinks in enclosed or semi-enclosed marginal seas worldwide. It therefore provides a set of preconditions for the formation of submarine landslides, including rapid sediment accumulation, formation of gas hydrates, and fluid overpressure. A new concept involving temporal and spatial analyses is tested to construct a relationship between submarine landslides and different time scale trigger mechanisms, and three mechanisms are discussed in the context of spatial scale and temporal frequency: evolution of slope gradient and overpressure, global environmental changes, and tectonic events. Submarine landslides that are triggered by tectonic events are the largest but occur less frequently, while submarine landslides triggered by the combination of slope gradient and overpressure evolution are the smallest but most frequently occurring events. In summary, analysis shows that the formation of submarine landslides is a complex process involving the operation of different factors on various time scales.展开更多

The heart beat rate (HBR) and blood flow during systole and diastole were tested in zebrafish embryos. We found that Cynodon dactylon (C. dactylon) induced increases in the HBR in zebrafish embryos with a HBR of (3.968±0.344) beats/ s, which was significantly higher than that caused by betamethosone [(3.770±0.344) beats/s]. The EC50 value of C. dactylon was 3.738 μg/mL. The methanolic extract of Sida acuta (S. acuta) led to decreases in the HBR in zebrafish embryos [(1.877 ±0.079) beats/s], which was greater than that caused by nebivolol (positive control). The EC50 value of Sida acuta was 1.195 μg/mL. The untreated embryos had a HBR of (2.685±0.160) beats/s at 3 d post fertilization (dpf). The velocities of blood flow during the cardiac cycle were (2,291.667 ±72.169) μm/s for the control, (4,250± 125.000) μm/s for C. dactylon and (1,083.333±72.169) μm/s for S. acuta. The LC50 values were 32.6 μg/mL for C. dactylon and 20.9 μg/mL for S. acuta. In addition, the extracts exhibited no chemical genetic effects in the drug dosage range tested. In conclusion, we developed an assay that can measure changes in cardiac function in response to herbal small molecules and determine the cardiogenic effects by microvideography.展开更多

Sea cu- cumber Holothuria atra is commonly known as the lollyfish. The antifimgal activity was detected using agar well diffusion method against the various fungal strains such as Trichoderma viride, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavis, Candida albicans and Penicillium chrysogenum. Relatively high antifungal activity was seen against Candida albicans at 100 μL-1 concentration of extracts. Zone of inhibition was measured at 18 mm of diameter. The anti-tumor activities were detected against the Vero and Hep2 cell lines using MTT assay. The cells were treated with H. atra extract at concentrations 0.078-10mg mL-1. The extract showed high proliferative activity against the Hep2 cells. The body wall extracts of sea cucumber (H. atra) showed effective antifungal and antitumor activities All these findings suggest that the extracts could be used for the development of drugs.展开更多

However, the characteristics of the mesoscale variabilities associated with the inverse KE cascade in the real oceans have not been clear enough up to now. To further examine this problem,we analyzed the spectral characteristics of the oceanic mesoscale motions over the scales of inverse KE cascades based on high-resolution gridded altimeter data. The applicability of the quasigeostrophic (QG) turbulence theory and the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) turbulence theory in real oceans is further explored. The results show that the sea surface height (SSH) spectral slope is linearly related to the eddy-kinetic-energy (EKE) level with a high correlation coefficient value of 0.67. The findings also suggest that the QG turbulence theory is an appropriate dynamic framework at the edge of high-EKE regions and that the SQG theory is more suitable in tropical regions and low-EKE regions at mid-high latitudes. New anisotropic characteristics of the inverse KE cascade are also provided. These results indicate that the along-track spectrum used by previous studies cannot reveal the dynamics of the mesoscale variabilities well.展开更多

Distribution of DMS showed remarkable variation spatially and temporally, ranging from 0.3 to 52.3 nmol/L. Seasonally, DMS concentration was high in late spring and low in autumn and winter. There was similar but weaker seasonal variation of DMSP. Generally, DMS concentration inside the bay was higher than that outside the bay; highest concentration often occurred nearshore. In some summer and autumn cruises DMS surface water was significantly higher than that in bottom water. Analysis indicated that salinity and zooplankton had significant influence on total DMS level in seawater. The estimation of sea-air flux of DMS showed significant seasonal variation, was the highest in spring [2441 μgS/(m2·d)] and lowest in winter [272 (m2 · d) ], with an annual average of 924 μgS/(m2 ·d) .展开更多

Analyses of the bacterial composition of swine waste lagoon samples confirmed the presence of several purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) species known to produce a variety of carotenoids. We examined a carotenoid naturally abundant in North Carolina swine waste lagoons dominated by PNSB. Analytical methods including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) confirmed the identity of the dominant carotenoid as spirilloxanthin, C42H60O2, with 13 conjugated double bonds. This structure confers antioxidant properties as good as those of carotenoids currently marketed as antioxidants. Visual estimates of the “redness” of swine waste lagoon liquids were highly correlated with carotenoid content. Spirilloxanthin concentrations in a lagoon with a strong PNSB bloom were approximately 0.5 grams·m-3. These results support further investigations into the potential for extracting commercially valuable natural products from swine waste lagoons.展开更多

A mother AAPB cell can unusually divide into 3 daughter cells and looks like a 揧?during the division. AAPB cells sometimes adhere together forming a free-floating population. Most of the known AAPB species are obligately aerobic. Bacteriochlorophyll a (BChl a) is the only photosynthetic pigment in AAPB, and the number of BChl a molecules in an AAPB cell is much less than that in an anaerobic phototrophic bacterial cell, while the accessorial pigments carotenoids in AAPB are abundant in concentration and diverse in species. In addition to the common magnesium containing BChl a, a zinc-containing BChla was also seen in AAPB. AAPB have light harvesting complexⅠbut usually lack light harvesting complexⅡ. Although AAPB featur in photosynthesis, their growth is not necessarily light- dependent. There is a mechanism controlling the photosynthesis approach. AAPB are widely distributed in marine environments especially in oligotrophic oceans accounting for a substantial portion of the total biomass and playing a unique role in the cycle of carbon and other biogenic elements. Besides the contribution to primary production, AAPB also have great potentials in bioremediation of polluted environments. Studies on AAPB would be of great value in understanding the evolution of photosynthesis and the structure and function of marine ecosystems.展开更多

Lysosomal membrane stability (LMS) has previously been applied as an indicator of cellularwell-being todetermine health status in bivalve mussels. The objective of this study is to evaluate LMS in Ruditapes philippinarum haemolymph using the neutral red retention assay (NRRA). Clamswere exposed in laboratory conditions to caffeine (0.1, 5, 15, 50 μg/L), ibuprofen (0.1, 5, 10, 50 μg/L), carbamazepine and novobiocin (both at 0.1, 1, 10, 50 μg/L) for35days. Results show adose-dependent effect of the pharmaceuticals. The neutral red retention time measured at the end of the bioassaywas significantly reduced by 50% after exposure to environmental concentrations (p 〈 0.05) (caffeine = 15 μg/L; ibuprofen = 10 μg/L; carbamazepine = 1 μg/L and novobiocin = 1 μg/L), compared to controls. Clams exposed to these pharmaceuticalswere considered to present adiminished health status (retention time 〈45 min), significantlyworse than controls (96 min) (p 〈 0.05). The predicted no environmental effect concentration (PNEC) results showed that these pharmaceuticals are very toxic at the environmental concentrations tested. Measurement of the alteration of LMS has been found to be a sensitive technique that enables evaluation of the health status of clams after exposure to pharmaceuticals under laboratory conditions, thus representing a robust Tier-1 screening biomarker.展开更多

However, it is hitherto not clear how the marine sediments can be used to shed light on the environment and climate change of the catchment. To provide such insight, we used the major element, trace element and rare earth element(REE) compositions in the southern Yellow Sea(SYS) sediments to reconstruct the changes in weathering and erosion of their source regions. The sediments originate predominantly from the upper crust of East China and are transported into the basin especially by the Yellow River(Huanghe) and to a lesser extent by the Yangtze River(Changjiang). The chemical index of alteration(CIA; 53.7–59.7) suggests low chemical weathering of the source rocks since the Middle Holocene. This is consistent with the relatively cool and arid climate in North China after the Holocene Megathermal. Comparison of element ratios, including Al/Ca, K/Ca, Al/Na, K/Na, Rb/Sr, Li/Ba and the CIA shows that we can use the latter as a robust proxy for climate change. The CIA-based mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature show a series of climate fluctuations in the catchment. A relatively warm and humid Period I(5.3–2.9 cal. ka BP), a relatively cool and dry Period II(2.9–0.9 cal. ka BP) and an increasingly cool and dry Period III(0.9–0.3 cal. ka BP). These periods can be linked to climate intervals recognized elsewhere.展开更多

Here, we reconstructed 15 metagenomic-assembled genomes from coastal sediments covering most known Asgard archaea and a novel group, which is proposed as a new Asgard phylum named as the "Gerdarchaeota".Genomic analyses predict that Gerdarchaeota are facultative anaerobes in utilizing both organic and inorganic carbon. Unlike their closest relatives Heimdallarchaeota, Gerdarchaeota have genes encoding for cellulase and enzymes involved in the tetrahydromethanopterin-based Wood–Ljungdahl pathway. Transcriptomics showed that most of our identified Asgard archaea are capable of degrading organic matter, including peptides, amino acids and fatty acids, occupying ecological niches in different depths of layers of the sediments. Overall, this study broadens the diversity of the mysterious Asgard archaea and provides evidence for their ecological roles in coastal sediments.展开更多

文摘In the western and central Pacific Ocean, upper strata waters exhibit highly dynamic oceanographic features under ENSO variability. This has been proved to be responsible for the dynamic change of both abundance and zonal distribution of skipjack tuna(Katsuwonus pelamis).Although causality has been suggested by researchers using physical-biological interaction models, cumulative evidence needs to be obtained and the tenability of assertion needs to be tested from an ecological habitat perspective, based on fisheries data. For purse seine fishery, the use of catch per unit effort(CPUE)as an indication of the abundance is confusing because of technical improvements over the whole exploitation history and unbalanced individual fishing characteristic of vessels. It is particularly interesting to discriminate between habitat characteristics in comparative scenarios of CPUE application. This study identified habitat traits based on a series of oceanographic factors from a global ocean reanalysis model.A comparison was conducted between two habitat models based on unprocessed purse seine CPUE and standardized CPUE considering fishing characteristics. The results suggest that standardized CPUE could model the regular zonal shift of habitat compatible with the observed fishing efforts transfer, and achieved better prediction capacity than unprocessed CPUE.Furthermore, the habitat of skipjack tuna was also characterized and linked with surface and subsurface thermal environment, ocean current, dissolved oxygen, biotic environment, and ENSO variability. The monthly-averaged habitat suitable index, derived from the optimal habitat model prediction, showed a significant linear relationship with the southern oscillation index, which suggested that El Ni?o episodes eventually provide more preferable habitat for skipjack tuna under ENSO variability.

文摘Recent and paleo-submarine landslides are widely distributed within strata in deep-water areas along continental slopes, uplifts, and carbonate platforms on the north continental margin of the South China Sea(SCS). In summary, analysis shows that the formation of submarine landslides is a complex process involving the operation of different factors on various time scales.

文摘Archaea have unique glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether(GDGT) lipids that can be used to develop paleotemperature proxies such as TEX86.This research is to validate proposed GDGT-proxies for paleotemperature determination in the South China Sea(SCS).Samples were collected from core-top sediments (0-5 cm) in the northern SCS.Total lipids were extracted to obtain core GDGTs,which were identified and quantified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS).The abundance of isoprenoidal GDGTs(/GDGTs) ranged from 271.5 ng/g dry sediment to 1266.3 ng/g dry sediment, whereas the branched GDGTs(bGDGTs),supposedly derived from terrestrial sources, ranged from 22.2 ng/g dry sediment to 56.7 ng/g dry sediment. The TEX_(86)-derived sea surface temperatures ranged from 20.9℃in the coast(water depth 〈 160 m) to 27.9℃offshore(water depth 〉 1000 m).TEX86-derived temperatures near shore(〈 160 m water depth) averaged 23.1±2.5℃(n =4),which were close to the satellite-derived winter mean sea surface temperature(average 22.6±1.0℃,n = 4);whereas the TEX_(86)-derived temperatures offshore averaged 27.4±0.3℃(n = 7) and were consistent with the satellite mean annual sea surface temperature(average 26.8±0.4℃,n = 7).These results suggest that TEX_(86) may record the sea surface mean annual temperature in the open ocean, while it likely records winter sea surface temperature in the shallower water.

文摘Fracture-fissure systems found at mid-ocean ridges are dominating conduits for the circulation of metallogenic fluid.Ascertaining the distribution area of active faults on both sides of mid-ocean ridges will provide a useful tool in the search for potential hydrothermal vents, thus guiding the exploration of modern seafloor sulfides.Considering the MidAtlantic Ridge 20°N–24°N(NMAR)and North Chile Rise(NCR)as examples, fault elements such as Fault Spacing(?S)and Fault Heave(?X)can be identified and quantitatively measured. The methods used include Fourier filtering of the multi-beam bathymetry data,in combination with measurements of the topographic slope, curvature, and slope aspect patterns.According to the Sequential Faulting Model of mid-ocean ridges, the maximal migration distance of an active fault on either side of mid-ocean ridges—that is,the distribution range of active faults—can be measured. Results show that the maximal migration distance of active faults at the NMAR is 0.76–1.01 km(the distance is larger at the center than at the ends of this segment),and at the NCR,the distribution range of active faults is 0.38–1.6 km.The migration distance of active faults on the two study areas is positively related to the axial variation of magma supply. In the NCR study area, where there is an abundant magma input, the number of faults within a certain distance is mainly affected by the variation of lithospheric thickness. Here a large range of faulting clearly corresponds to a high proportion of magmatism to seafloor spreading near mid-ocean ridges(M)value, and in the study area of the NMAR,there is insufficient magmatism, and the number of faults may be controlled by both lithospheric thickness and magma supply, leading to a less obvious positive correlation between the distribution range of active faults and M.

文摘Understanding the dynamics of phytoplankton communities in coastal zones is crucial for the management and conservation of coastal ecosystems.Previous research indicated that the phytoplankton community structure and dominant taxa in the Bohai Sea(BHS)have exhibited significant shifts from the 1990s to the early 2010s in response to environmental changes, especially the change in nutrient structure. This study comprehensively investigated the variations in net-collected phytoplankton(>76μm)community structure, diversity, and environmental factors in the BHS during the late summers of 2011-2020,aiming to understand the recent trend in phytoplankton community structure and to explore the interactions between the communities and the environment.During the study period, the nutrient status in the BHS was characterized by a decrease in dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN)concentration,an increase in dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP)concentration, and a return of the nitrogen-to-phosphorus(N/P)molar ratio(hereinafter referred to as N/P ratio)to the Redfield ratio since 2016.The eutrophication index(EI)in the BHS remained stable and was generally at a low level(<1).The Dia/Dino index fluctuated but did not show an obvious trend.Overall, the eutrophication, the imbalance in nutrient ratio, and the shift in phytoplankton community structure did not continue during the study period. The increased abundance of phytoplankton was strongly associated with elevated concentrations of DIN,as well as higher N/P and nitrogen-to-silicon(N/Si)ratios,whereas the greater diversity was strongly linked to higher concentrations of DIP.Diatoms and dinoflagellates showed significant differences in their interactions with the environment, and their relative dominance was related to water column depth and stratification intensity;their impacts on the phytoplankton community diversity were also significantly different. The variations of certain dominant species,i.e.,Skeletonema costatum,Paralia sulcata, and Tripos longipes, exhibited strong links to the changes in nutrient structure in the BHS.The findings of this study contribute to understanding the regional environmental changes and provide insights into the adaptive strategies of coastal ecosystems in response to environmental shifts and fluctuations.
文摘The aim of the present study was to screen cardioactive herbs from Western Ghats of India. In conclusion, we developed an assay that can measure changes in cardiac function in response to herbal small molecules and determine the cardiogenic effects by microvideography.

文摘In phylum Echinodermata, the family Holothuridae is distinguished by its capacity of bioactive compounds. The body wall extracts of sea cucumber (H. atra) showed effective antifungal and antitumor activities All these findings suggest that the extracts could be used for the development of drugs.

文摘Temporal and spatial scales play important roles in fishery ecology, and an inappropriate spatio-temporal scale may result in large errors in modeling fish distribution. The objective of this study is to evaluate the roles of spatio-temporal scales in habitat suitability modeling, with the western stock of winter-spring cohort of neon flying squid (Ornmastrephes bartramii) in the northwest Pacific Ocean as an example. In this study, the fishery-dependent data from the Chinese Mainland Squid Jigging Technical Group and sea surface temperature (SST) from remote sensing during August to October of 2003-2008 were used.We evaluated the differences in a habitat suitability index model resulting from aggregating data with 36 different spatial scales with a combination of three latitude scales (0.5°,1 ° and 2°),four longitude scales (0.5°,1°,2° and 4°),and three temporal scales (week, fortnight, and month). The coefficients of variation (CV) of the weekly, biweekly and monthly suitability index (SI) were compared to determine which temporal and spatial scales of SI model are more precise. This study shows that the optimal temporal and spatial scales with the lowest CV are month, and 0.5° latitude and 0.5° longitude for O.bartramii in the northwest Pacific Ocean. This suitability index model developed with an optimal scale can be cost-effective in improving forecasting fishing ground and requires no excessive sampling efforts. We suggest that the uncertainty associated with spatial and temporal scales used in data aggregations needs to be considered in habitat suitability modeling.

文摘Oceanic geostrophic turbulence theory predicts significant inverse kinetic energy (KE) cascades at scales larger than the energy injection wavelength. These results indicate that the along-track spectrum used by previous studies cannot reveal the dynamics of the mesoscale variabilities well.

文摘Concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured from Nov. 1995 to Sep. 1997 in seawater of Jiaozhou Bay, other ecological factors such as water temperature, salinity, Chl a and zooplankton were also investigated. The estimation of sea-air flux of DMS showed significant seasonal variation, was the highest in spring [2441 μgS/(m2·d)] and lowest in winter [272 (m2 · d) ], with an annual average of 924 μgS/(m2 ·d) .
文摘Development of Environmentally Superior Technologies swine waste management has focused on extraction of products with relatively low unit values. These results support further investigations into the potential for extracting commercially valuable natural products from swine waste lagoons.

文摘Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (AAPB) are characterized by the following physiological and ecological features. Studies on AAPB would be of great value in understanding the evolution of photosynthesis and the structure and function of marine ecosystems.

文摘Biological reference point(BRP)is one of the essential components in the management strategy evaluation that is used to determine the status of fishery stock and set management regulations. However,as BRPs can be derived from different models and many different BRPs are available, the effectiveness and consistency of different BRPs should be evaluated before being applied to fisheries management. In this study,we used a computation-intensive approach to identify optimal BRPs.We systematically evaluated 1500 combinations of alternative BRPs in managing the bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus)and yellowfin tuna(Thunnus albacares)fisheries in the Indian Ocean. The effectiveness and consistency of these BRPs were evaluated using four performance measures related to fisheries landing performance and biomass conservation.Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate various uncertainties. The results suggest that the proposed computation-intensive approach can be effective in identifying optimal BRPs with respect to a set of defined performance measures. We found that the current maximum sustainable yield(MSY)-based BRP combinations are effective target BRPs to manage the bigeye and yellowfin tuna fisheries with the“linear”harvest control rule(HCR).However, using the“knife-edge”HCR,better BRPs could be found for both the bigeye and yellowfin tuna fisheries management with improved fisheries and conservation performance. The framework developed in this study can be used to identify suitable BRPs based on a set of defined performance measures for other fisheries.

文摘Arsenic and sulfur mineralization is a natural phenomenon occurring in hydrothermal systems where parameters like temperature and organic matter(OM)can influence the mobilization of the toxic metalloid in marine environments. In the present study we analyze the influence of temperature and OM(particularly sulfur-containing additives)on As and S precipitation based on the recent discovery of As-rich nanoparticles in the hydrothermal system near the coast of the Greek island Milos. To this end,we experimentally recreate the formation of amorphous colloidal particles rich in As and S via acidification(pH 3–4)of aqueous precursors at various temperatures. At higher temperatures,we observe the formation of monodisperse particles within the first 24 h of the experiment, generating colloidal particles with diameters close to 160 nm.The S:As ratio and particle size of the synthetized particles closely correlates with values for As_(x)S_(y)particles detected in the hydrothermal system off Milos.Furthermore, organic sulfur containing additives(cysteine and glutathione,GSH)are a key factor in the process of nucleation and growth of amorphous colloidal As_(x)S_(y)particles and, together with the temperature gradient present in shallow hydrothermal vents, dictate the stabilization of As-bearing nanomaterials in the environment.Based on these findings,we present a simple model that summarizes our new insights into the formation and mobility of colloidal As in aquatic ecosystems. In this context, amorphous As_(x)S_(y)particles can present harmful effects to micro-and macro-biota not foreseen in bulk As material.

文摘Although pharmaceuticals have beendetected in the environment only in the range from ng/L to μg/L, it has beendemonstrated that they can adversely affect the health status of aquatic organisms. Measurement of the alteration of LMS has been found to be a sensitive technique that enables evaluation of the health status of clams after exposure to pharmaceuticals under laboratory conditions, thus representing a robust Tier-1 screening biomarker.

文摘From a large number of case studies on terrestrial deposits we know that Late Holocene climate fluctuations have an important impact on the terrestrial environments. A relatively warm and humid Period I(5.3–2.9 cal. ka BP), a relatively cool and dry Period II(2.9–0.9 cal. ka BP) and an increasingly cool and dry Period III(0.9–0.3 cal. ka BP). These periods can be linked to climate intervals recognized elsewhere.

文摘Asgard is an archaeal superphylum that might hold the key to understand the origin of eukaryotes, but its diversity and ecological roles remain poorly understood. Overall, this study broadens the diversity of the mysterious Asgard archaea and provides evidence for their ecological roles in coastal sediments.
