The snap-through behaviors and nonlinear vibrations are investigated for a bistable composite laminated cantilever shell subjected to transversal foundation excitation based on experimental and theoretical approaches. An improved experimental specimen is designed in order to satisfy the cantilever support boundary condition, which is composed of an asymmetric region and a symmetric region. The symmetric region of the experimental specimen is entirely clamped, which is rigidly connected to an electromagnetic shaker, while the asymmetric region remains free of constraint.Different motion paths are realized for the bistable cantilever shell by changing the input signal levels of the electromagnetic shaker, and the displacement responses of the shell are collected by the laser displacement sensors. The numerical simulation is conducted based on the established theoretical model of the bistable composite laminated cantilever shell, and an off-axis three-dimensional dynamic snap-through domain is obtained. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the experimental results. The nonlinear stiffness characteristics, dynamic snap-through domain, and chaos and bifurcation behaviors of the shell are quantitatively analyzed.Due to the asymmetry of the boundary condition and the shell, the upper stable-state of the shell exhibits an obvious soft spring stiffness characteristic, and the lower stable-state shows a linear stiffness characteristic of the shell. 展开更多

In this paper, the blade is assumed to be a rotating variable thickness cantilever twisted plate structure, and the natural vibrations of variable thickness cantilever twisted plate made of metal porous material are studied. It is assumed that the thickness of the plate changes along spanwise direction and chordwise direction, respectively, and it changes in both directions. The classical thin shell theory, the first and second fundamental forms of surface and von Karman geometric relationship are employed to derive the total potential energy and kinetic energy of the cantilever twisted plate,in which the centrifugal force potential due to high rotational speed is included. Then, according to the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure and applying the polynomial functions which satisfy the cantilever boundary conditions, the dynamic system expressed by equations of motion is reduced to an eigenvalue problem.By numerical simulation, the frequency curves and the mode shapes of the twisted plate can be obtained to reveal the internal connection between natural vibration and the parameters.A series of comparison studies are performed to verify the accuracy of the present formulation and calculations,in which compared data come from experimental, finite element method and theoretical calculation, respectively. The influence of pre-twist angle, three different forms of thickness taper ratio and rotational speed on natural vibration, mode exchange and frequency veering phenomenon of the system is discussed in detail. In addition, the approach proposed here can efficiently extract analytical expressions of mode functions for rotating variable thickness cantilever twisted plate structures. 展开更多

This research proposes a novel type of variable stiffness tuned particle damper(TPD)for reducing vibrations in boring bars. The TPD integrates the developments of particle damping and dynamical vibration absorber, whose frequency tuning principle is established through an equivalent theoretical model.Based on the multiphase flow theory of gas-solid,it is effective to obtain the equivalent damping and stiffness of the particle damping. The dynamic equations of the coupled system, consisting of a boring bar with the TPD,are built by Hamilton’s principle. The vibration suppression of the TPD is assessed by calculating the amplitude responses of the boring bar both with and without the TPD by the Newmark-beta algorithm. Moreover,an improvement is proposed to the existing gas-solid flow theory, and a comparative analysis of introducing the stiffness term on the damping effect is presented. The parameters of the TPD are optimized by the genetic algorithm, and the results indicate that the optimized TPD effectively reduces the peak response of the boring bar system. 展开更多

A novel oscillator structure, bimorph piezoelectric cantilever beam with two-stepped variable thicknesses,is proposed to improve the energy harvestingperformance of the vibration energy harvester (VEH) under low-frequency vibration environment. Firstly, the piezoelectric cantilever is segmented to obtain the energy functions based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam assumptions, and the Galerkin approach is utilized to discretize the energy functions. Applying boundary conditions and continuity conditions enforced at separation locations, the electromechanical coupled governing equations for the piezoelectric energy harvesterareintroduced by means of the Lagrange equations. Furthermore, the steady state response expressions are obtained for harmonic base excitations at arbitrary frequencies. Numerical results are computed and the effects ofthe lengths-ratio, thicknesses-ratio,end thicknessand load resistance on the output voltage, harvested power and power density are discussed. Moreover, to verify thecorrectness ofanalytical results, the finite element method (FEM)simulationis also conducted to analyze performance of the proposed VEH, where a good agreement is presented. All the results show thatthe present oscillator structureis moreefficient than the conventional uniform beam structure, specifically, for vibration energy harvesting in low-frequency environment. 展开更多

Traditional procedures to treat vibrations of gyroscopic continua involve direct application of perturbation methods to a system with both a strong gyroscopic term and other weakly coupled terms. In this study,a gyroscopic modes decoupling method is used to obtain an equivalent system with decoupled gyroscopic modes having only weak couplings.Taking the axially moving string as an example, the instability boundaries in the vicinity of parametric resonances are detected using both the traditional coupled gyroscopic system and our system with decoupled gyroscopic modes, and the results are compared to show the advantages and disadvantages of each method. 展开更多

The asymptotic development method is applied to analyze the free vibration of non-uniform axially functionally graded(AFG) beams, of which the governing equations are differential equations with variable coefficients. By decomposing the variable flexural stiffness and mass per unit length into reference invariant and variant parts, the perturbation theory is introduced to obtain an approximate analytical formula of the natural frequencies of the non-uniform AFG beams with different boundary conditions.Furthermore, assuming polynomial distributions of Young's modulus and the mass density, the numerical results of the AFG beams with various taper ratios are obtained and compared with the published literature results. The discussion results illustrate that the proposed method yields an effective estimate of the first three order natural frequencies for the AFG tapered beams. However, the errors increase with the increase in the mode orders especially for the cases with variable heights. In brief, the asymptotic development method is verified to be simple and efficient to analytically study the free vibration of non-uniform AFG beams, and it could be used to analyze any tapered beams with an arbitrary varying cross width. 展开更多

The linear and non-linear free vibrations of a spinning piezoelectric beam are studied by considering geometric nonlinearities and electromechanical coupling effect. The non-linear differential equations of the spinning piezoelectric beam governing two transverse vibrations are derived by using two Euler angles transformation and extended Hamilton principle, wherein an additional piezoelectric coupling term and different linear terms are present in contrast to the traditional shaft model. Linear frequencies are obtained by solving the standard eigenvalues of the linearized system directly, and the non-linear frequencies and non-linear complex modes are achieved by using the method of multiple scales. For free vibrations analysis of a spinning piezoelectric beam, the non-linear modal motions are investigated as forward and backward precession with different spinning speeds. The responses to the initial conditions for such a gyroscopic system are studied, and a beat phenomenon is found, which are then validated by numerical simulation. The influences of some parameters such as electrical resistance, rotary inertia and spinning speeds to the non-linear dynamics of a spinning piezoelectric beam are investigated. 展开更多

In this study, the first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT)is used to establish a nonlinear dynamic model for a conical shell truncated by a functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite(FG-GPLRC).The vibration analyses of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell are presented.Considering the graphene platelets(GPLs)of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell with three different distribution patterns, the modified Halpin-Tsai model is used to calculate the effective Young’s modulus.Hamilton’s principle, the FSDT,and the von-Karman type nonlinear geometric relationships are used to derive a system of partial differential governing equations of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell. The Galerkin method is used to obtain the ordinary differential equations of the truncated conical shell. Then, the analytical nonlinear frequencies of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell are solved by the harmonic balance method. The effects of the weight fraction and distribution pattern of the GPLs,the ratio of the length to the radius as well as the ratio of the radius to the thickness of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell on the nonlinear natural frequency characteristics are discussed. This study culminates in the discovery of the periodic motion and chaotic motion of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell. 展开更多

The mathematical modeling of a rotating tapered Timoshenko beam with preset and pre-twist angles is constructed. The partial differential equations governing the six degrees, i.e., three displacements in the axial, flapwise, and edgewise directions and three cross-sectional angles of torsion, flapwise bending, and edgewise bending, are obtained by the Euler angle descriptions. The power series method is then used to inves- tigate the natural frequencies and the corresponding complex mode functions. It is found that all the natural frequencies are increased by the centrifugal stiffening except the twist frequency, which is slightly decreased. The tapering ratio increases the first transverse, torsional, and axial frequencies, while decreases the second transverse frequency. Because of the pre-twist, all the directions are gyroscopically coupled with the phase differences among the six degrees. 展开更多

In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a string-beam coupled system subjected to external, parametric and tuned excitations is presented. The governing equations of motion are obtained for the nonlinear transverse vibrations of the string-beam coupled system which are described by a set of ordinary differential equations with two degrees of freedom. The case of 1:1 internal resonance between the modes of the beam and string, and the primary and combined resonance for the beam is considered. The method of multiple scales is utilized to analyze the nonlinear responses of the string-beam coupled system and obtain approximate solutions up to and including the second-order approximations. All resonance cases are extracted and investigated.Stability of the system is studied using frequency response equations and the phase-plane method.Numerical solutions are carried out and the results are presented graphically and discussed. The effects of the different parameters on both response and stability of the system are investigated. The reported results are compared to the available published work. 展开更多

The piezoelectric materials are used to investigate the active vibration control of ordered/disordered periodic two-span beams. The equation of motion of each sub-beam with piezoelectric patches is established based on Hamilton's principle with an assumed mode method. The velocity feedback control algorithm is used to design the controller. The free and forced vibration behaviors of the two-span beams with the piezoelectric actuators and sensors are analyzed. The vibration properties of the disordered two-span beams caused by misplacing the middle support are also researched. In addition, the effects of the length disorder degree on the vibration performances of the disordered beams are investigated. From the numerical results, it can be concluded that the disorder in the length of the periodic two-span beams will cause vibration localizations of the free and forced vibrations of the structure, and the vibration localization phenomenon will be more and more obvious when the length difference between the two sub-beams increases. Moreover, when the velocity feedback control is used, both the forced and the free vibrations will be suppressed. Meanwhile, the vibration behaviors of the two-span beam are tuned. 展开更多

Nonlinear energy sink(NES)can passively absorb broadband energy from primary oscillators.Proper multiple NESs connected in parallel exhibit superior performance to single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF)NESs.In this work,a linear coupling spring is installed between two parallel NESs so as to expand the application scope of such vibration absorbers. The vibration absorption of the parallel and parallel-coupled NESs and the system response induced by the coupling spring are studied. The results show that the responses of the system exhibit a significant difference when the heavier cubic oscillators in the NESs have lower stiffness and the lighter cubic oscillators have higher stiffness. Moreover, the efficiency of the parallel-coupled NES is higher for medium shocks but lower for small and large shocks than that of the parallel NESs.The parallel-coupled NES also shows superior performance for medium harmonic excitations until higher response branches are induced. The performance of the parallel-coupled NES and the SDOF NES is compared. It is found that, regardless of the chosen SDOF NES parameters, the performance of the parallel-coupled NES is similar or superior to that of the SDOF NES in the entire force range. 展开更多

Turbo-machineries,as key components, have wide applications in civil, aerospace, and mechanical engineering.By calculating natural frequencies and dynamical deformations,we have explained the rationality of the series form for the aerodynamic force of the blade under the subsonic flow in our earlier studies. In this paper, the subsonic aerodynamic force obtained numerically is applied to the low pressure compressor blade with a low constant rotating speed. The blade is established as a pre-twist and presetting cantilever plate with a rectangular section under combined excitations, including the centrifugal force and the aerodynamic force. In view of the first-order shear deformation theory and von-K′arm′an nonlinear geometric relationship, the nonlinear partial differential dynamical equations for the warping cantilever blade are derived by Hamilton’s principle. The second-order ordinary differential equations are acquired by the Galerkin approach. With consideration of 1:3 internal resonance and 1/2 sub-harmonic resonance, the averaged equation is derived by the asymptotic perturbation methodology.Bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, waveforms, and power spectrums are numerically obtained to analyze the effects of the first harmonic of the aerodynamic force on nonlinear dynamical responses of the structure. 展开更多

Using Reddy’s high-order shear theory for laminated plates and Hamilton’s principle, a nonlinear partial differential equation for the dynamics of a deploying cantilevered piezoelectric laminated composite plate, under the combined action of aerodynamic load and piezoelectric excitation, is introduced. Two-degree of freedom(DOF)nonlinear dynamic models for the time-varying coefficients describing the transverse vibration of the deploying laminate under the combined actions of a first-order aerodynamic force and piezoelectric excitation were obtained by selecting a suitable time-dependent modal function satisfying the displacement boundary conditions and applying second-order discretization using the Galerkin method. Using a numerical method, the time history curves of the deploying laminate were obtained, and its nonlinear dynamic characteristics, including extension speed and different piezoelectric excitations, were studied. The results suggest that the piezoelectric excitation has a clear effect on the change of the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of such piezoelectric laminated composite plates. The nonlinear vibration of the deploying cantilevered laminate can be effectively suppressed by choosing a suitable voltage and polarity. 展开更多

The aim of this paper is to conduct experimental modal analysis and numerical simulation to verify the structural characteristics of a deployable-retractable wing for aircraft and spacecraft. A modal impact test was conducted in order to determine the free vibration characteristics. Natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes were obtained via measurement in LMS Test. Lab. The frequency response functions were identified and computed by force and acceleration signals, and then mode shapes of this morphing wing structure were subsequently identified by PolyMAX modal parameter estimation method. FEM modal analysis was also implemented and its numerical results convincingly presented the mode shape and natural frequency characteristics were in good agreement with those obtained from experimental modal analysis. Experimental study in this paper focuses on the transverse response of morphing wing as its moveable part is deploying or retreating. Vibration response to different rotation speeds have been collected, managed and analyzed through the use of comparison methodology with each other. Evident phenomena have been discovered including the resonance on which most analysis is focused because of its potential use to generate large amplitude vibration of specific frequency or to avoid such resonant frequencies from a wide spectrum of response. Manufactured deployable-retractable wings are studied in stage of experimental modal analysis, in which some nonlinear vibration resulted should be particularly noted because such wing structure displays a low resonant frequency which is always optimal to be avoided for structural safety and stability. 展开更多

An adaptive dynamic vibration absorber(ADVA)is designed for lowfrequency vibration suppression. The leaf springs are applied as the tuning stiffness elements. The principle of variable stiffness is analyzed to obtain the effective range of the first natural frequency variation.A classic simply supported manipulator is selected as the controlled system. The coupled dynamic model of the manipulator-ADVA system is built to obtain the maximum damping efficiency and the vibration absorption capacity of the designed ADVA.An experimental platform is set up to verify the theoretical results. It is revealed that the ADVA can adjust the first natural frequency on a large scale by changing the curvature of the leaf springs. The amplitude of the manipulator is reduced obviously with the installation of the designed ADVA.Finally, based on the short-time Fourier transformation(STFT),a stepwise optimization algorithm is proposed to achieve a quick tuning of the natural frequency of the ADVA so that it can always coincide with the frequency of the prime structure.Through the above steps, the intelligent frequency tuning of the ADVA is realized with high vibration absorption performance in a wide frequency range. 展开更多

The concept of local resonance phononic crystals proposed in recent years provides a new chance for theoretical and technical breakthroughs in the structural vibration reduction. In this paper,a novel sandwich-like plate model with local resonator to acquire specific low-frequency bandgaps is proposed. The core layer of the present local resonator is composed by the simply supported overhanging beam, linear spring and mass block, and well connected with the upper and lower surface panels. The simply supported overhanging beam is free at right end,and an additional linear spring is added at the left end.The wave equation is established based on the Hamilton principle, and the bending wave bandgap is further obtained. The theoretical results are verified by the COMSOL finite element software. The bandgaps and vibration characteristics of the local resonance sandwich-like plate are studied in detail. The factors which could have effects on the bandgap characteristics, such as the structural damping, mass of vibrator, position of vibrator, bending stiffness of the beam, and the boundary conditions of the sandwich-like plates, are analyzed. The result shows that the stopband is determined by the natural frequency of the resonator, the mass ratio of the resonator, and the surface panel. It shows that the width of bandgap is greatly affected by the damping ratio of the resonator. Finally,it can also be found that the boundary conditions can affect the isolation efficiency. 展开更多

Global bifurcations and multi-pulse chaotic dynamics for a simply supported rectangular thin plate are studied by the extended Melnikov method. The rectangular thin plate is subject to transversal and in-plane excitation. A two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear nonautonomous system governing equations of motion for the rectangular thin plate is derived by the von Karman type equation and the Galerkin approach. A one-to- one internal resonance is considered. An averaged equation is obtained with a multi-scale method. After transforming the averaged equation into a standard form, the extended Melnikov method is used to show the existence of multi-pulse chaotic dynamics, which can be used to explain the mechanism of modal interactions of thin plates. A method for calculating the Melnikov function is given without an explicit analytical expression of homoclinic orbits. Furthermore, restrictions on the damping, excitation, and detuning parameters are obtained, under which the multi-pulse chaotic dynamics is expected. The results of numerical simulations are also given to indicate the existence of small amplitude multi-pulse chaotic responses for the rectangular thin plate. 展开更多
