Virtual water trade(VWT)provides a new perspective for alleviating water crisis and has thus attracted widespread attention. However, the heterogeneity of virtual water trade inside and outside the river basin and its influencing factors remains further study. In this study, for better investigating the pattern and heterogeneity of virtual water trade inside and outside provincial regions along the Yellow River Basin in 2015 using the input-output model(MRIO),we proposed two new concepts,i.e.,virtual water surplus and virtual water deficit, and then used the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index(LMDI)model to identify the inherent mechanism of the imbalance of virtual water trade between provincial regions along the Yellow River Basin and the other four regions in China. The results show that:1)in provincial regions along the Yellow River Basin, the less developed the economy was,the larger the contribution of the agricultural sector in virtual water trade, while the smaller the contribution of the industrial sector.2)Due to the large output of agricultural products, the upstream and midstream provincial regions of the Yellow River Basin had a virtual water surplus, with a net outflow of virtual water of 2.7×10^(8) m^(3) and 0.9×10^(8) m^(3),respectively.3)provincial regions along the Yellow River Basin were in a virtual water deficit with the rest of China, and the decisive factor was the active degree of trade with the outside. This study would be beneficial to illuminate the trade-related water use issues in provincial regions along the Yellow River Basin, which has farreaching practical signific-ance for alleviating water scarcity. 展开更多

Great potential of underground gas/energy storage in salt caverns seems to be a promising solution to support renewable energy. In the underground storage method, the operating cycle unfortunately may reach up to daily or even hourly, which generates complicated pressures on the salt cavern.Furthermore, the mechanical behavior of rock salt may change and present distinct failure characteristics under different stress states, which affects the performance of salt cavern during the time period of full service. To reproduce a similar loading condition on the cavern surrounding rock mass, the cyclic triaxial loading/unloading tests are performed on the rock salt to explore the mechanical transition behavior and failure characteristics under different confinement.Experimental results show that the rock salt samples pre-sent a diffused shear failure band with significant bulges at certain locations in low confining pressure conditions(e.g.5 MPa,10 MPa and 15 MPa),which is closely related to crystal misorientation and grain boundary sliding.Under the elevated confinement(e.g.20 MPa,30 MPa and 40 MPa),the dilation band dominates the failure mechanism, where the large-size halite crystals are crushed to be smaller size and new pores are developing. The failure transition mechanism revealed in the paper provides additional insight into the mechanical performance of salt caverns influenced by complicated stress states. 展开更多

Primary toppling usually occurs in layered rock slopes with large anti-dip angles. In this paper, the block toppling evolution was explored using a large-scale centrifuge system. Each block column in the layered model slope was made of cement mortar. Some artificial cracks perpendicular to the block column were prefabricated.Strain gages, displacement gages, and high-speed camera measurements were employed to monitor the deformation and failure processes of the model slope. The centrifuge test results show that the block toppling evolution can be divided into seven stages,i.e.layer compression, formation of major tensile crack, reverse bending of the block column, closure of major tensile crack, strong bending of the block column, formation of failure zone, and complete failure.Block toppling is characterized by sudden large deformation and occurs in stages. The wedge-shaped cracks in the model incline towards the slope.Experimental observations show that block toppling is mainly caused by bending failure rather than by shear failure. The tensile strength also plays a key factor in the evolution of block toppling. The simulation results from discrete element method(DEM)is in line with the testing results.Tensile stress exists at the backside of rock column during toppling deformation.Stress concentration results in the fragmented rock column and its degree is the most significant at the slope toe. 展开更多

Abundant landslide deposits were triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake, providing a rich source of material for subsequent debris flows or slope failures under rainfall conditions. A good understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of the landslide deposits is very important to the research on slope failure mechanisms and the initiation of debris flow. Laboratory biaxial compression tests are used to study the material compositions and water content impacts on the mechanical properties of landslide deposits, and a discrete element method (a bond-contact model) is used to study the particle stiffness, bond force, friction coefficient and confining stress impact on the mechanical behaviors and the relationships between the numerical and experimental parameters. The experimental results show that the failure stress of landslide deposits is decreased with increasing content of fine particles and also with increased water content, especially at the initial increasing stage. Cohesion of the saturated landslide deposits is increased, but the friction angle is decreased with the increase in the fine particle content. Shear strength parameters (the cohesion and friction angle) are decreased with the increasing water content at the initial increasing stage, and then, they slowly decrease. There is a critical value of the water content at 5%-7% (in weight) for the failure stress and shear strength parameters of the landslide deposits. Quadratic equations are presented to describe the relation between the bond force and cohesion, and the numerical friction coefficient and the experimental friction angle. 展开更多

Water-induced landslides in hydropower reservoirs pose a great threat to both project operation and human life. This paper examines three large reservoirs in Sichuan Province,China.Field surveys, site monitoring data analyses and numerical simulations are used to analyze the spatial distribution and failure mechanisms of water-induced landslides in reservoir areas.First, the general rules of landslide development in the reservoir area are summarized. The first rule is that most of the landslides have rear edge elevations of 100e500 m above the normal water level of the reservoir, with volumes in the range of 106 e107 m 3.When the volume exceeds a certain amount, the number of sites at which the landscape can withstand landslides is greatly reduced.Landslide hazards mainly occur in the middle section of the reservoir and less in the annex of the dam site and the latter half of the reservoir area. The second rule is that sedimentary rocks such as sandstone are more prone to landslide hazards than other lithologies. Then, the failure mechanism of changes in the water level that reduces the stability of the slope composed of different geomaterials is analyzed by a proposed slope stability framework that considers displacement and is discussed with the monitoring results.Permeability is an essential parameter for understanding the diametrically opposed deformation behavior of landslides experiencing filling-drawdown cycles during operation. This study seeks to provide inspiration to subsequent researchers,as well as guidance to technicians,on landslide prevention and control in reservoir areas. 展开更多

The stability of the surrounding rocks of large underground powerhouses is always emphasized during the construction process, especially in large-scale underground projects under construction, such as the Baihetan hydropower station in China.According to field investigations, numerical simulations and monitoring data analysis,we present a comparative analysis of the deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rocks of underground powerhouses on the left and right banks of the Baihetan hydropower station. The failure characteristics and deformation magnitude of the underground powerhouses on the left and right banks are quite different.Under the disadvantageous condition where the maximum principal stress intersects the axis of the powerhouse at a large angle, the left bank underground powerhouse shows prominent stress-controlled failure characteristics such as spalling, slack collapse and concrete cracking.Although the maximum principal stress is in the favorable condition which intersects the right bank powerhouse at a small angle, the relatively high intermediate principal stress with an angle subvertical to the right bank powerhouse plays an essential role in its deformation and failure, indicating that the influence of high intermediate principal stress cannot be ignored. In addition, structural plane-controlled failure and large deformation are also more evident on the right bank due to the extensive distribution of weak structural planes and complex surrounding rock properties. 展开更多

Rock masses in high-elevation or cold regions are vulnerable to the combined effects of freeze-thaw(F-T)weathering and dynamic mixed-mode loading, posing a serious threaten to the safety and stability of geotechnical engineering. In this study,a series of dynamic fracture tests were conducted on notched semi-circular bend(NSCB)granite specimens subjected to different mixed-mode loading and F-T cycles using a split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)test system. The effects of F-T treatment and dynamic mixed-mode loading on the fracture properties of granite, including effective fracture toughness, progressive fracture process, and macroscopic morphology of fracture surface, were comprehensively revealed. The experimental results suggest that the dynamic effective fracture toughness of NSCB specimens is dependent on the loading rate, particularly when the mode I loading is dominant.Additionally, the fracture toughness decreases as the number of F-T cycles increases, with an inflection point at 30 F-T cycles. All granite specimens subjected to mixed-mode loading exhibit a curved fracture path, with faster crack propagation speed and more fine cracks in specimens exposed to higher F-T cycles.Macroscopic morphology of fracture surface obtained using three-dimensional(3D)scanning indicates that the fractal dimension of the fracture surface increases with increasing F-T cycles, and the increment is more pronounced for specimens subjected to a higher mode II loading component. Moreover, this study compared the fracture resistance of F-T treated granite subjected to dynamic mixed loading using the maximum tangential stress(MTS)criterion and the generalized maximum tangential stress-based semi-analytical(SA-GMTS)criterion.Compared with the MTS criterion, the SA-GMTS criterion shows a more reasonable consistency with the experimental results, with a root mean square error within±7%. 展开更多

Rainwater runoff that does not infiltrate the soil during heavy rainfall may increase slope instability. The effect of runoff is usually neglected in conventional rainfall-induced slope failure analysis to simplify the model. To analyze the effect of runoff on slope stability, this study simultaneously simulated the effects of surface runoff and rainfall infiltration on bank slopes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. A shallow slope failure method that can be used to analyze runoff was proposed based on the modified Green-Ampt model, the simplified Saint-Venant model, and the infinite slope model. In this model, the modified Green–Ampt model was used to estimate the rainfall infiltration capacity and the wetting front depth. The eight-flow(D8) method and the simplified Saint-Venant model were selected to estimate the distribution of runoff. By considering the wetting front depth as the slip surface depth, the factor of safety of the slope could be determined using the infinite slope stability model. A comparison of the different models reveals that runoff can escalate the instability of certain slopes, causing stable slopes to become unstable. Comparison of the unstable areas obtained from the simulation with the actual landslide sites shows that the model proposed in this study can successfully predict landslides at these sites. The slope instability assessment model proposed in this study offers an alternative approach for estimating high-risk areas in large mountainous regions. 展开更多

Excessively high pore water pressure presents unpredictable risks to the safety of rock tunnels in mountainous regions that are predominantly composed of limestone. Investigating the creep characteristics and permeability evolution of limestone under varying hydrated conditions is crucial for a better understanding of the delayed deformation mechanisms of limestone rock tunnels. To this end, this paper initially conducts a series of multi-stage triaxial creep tests on limestone samples under varying pore water pressures. The experiment examines how pore water pressure affects limestone’s creep strain, strain rate, long-term strength, lifespan, and permeability, all within the context of hydraulicmechanical(HM) coupling. To better describe the creep behavior associated with pore water pressure, this paper proposes a new nonlinear fractional creep constitutive model. This constitutive model depicts the initial, steady-state, and accelerated phases of limestone’s creep behavior. Finally, the proposed model is applied to the numerical realization of deformation in limestone tunnel, validating the effectiveness of the proposed constitutive model in predicting tunnel’s creep deformation. This research enhances our understanding of limestone’s creep characteristics and permeability evolution under HM coupling, laying a foundation for assessing the longterm stability of mountain tunnels. 展开更多

The underground hydropower projects in Southwest China is characterized by large excavation sizes, high geostresses, complicated geological conditions and multiple construction processes.Various disasters such as collapses, large deformations, rockbursts are frequently encountered, resulting in serious casualties and huge economic losses. This review mainly presents some representative results on microseismic(MS)monitoring and forecasting for disasters in hydropower underground engineering.First,a set of new denoising, spectral analysis, and location methods were developed for better identification and location of MS signals. Then, the tempo-spatial characteristics of MS events were analyzed to understand the relationship between field construction and damages of surrounding rocks.Combined with field construction, geological data, numerical simulation and parametric analysis of MS sources, the focal mechanism of MS events was revealed.A damage constitutive model considering MS fracturing size was put forward and feedback analysis considering the MS damage of underground surrounding rocks was conducted.Next,an MS multi-parameter based risk assessment and early warning method for dynamic disasters were proposed. The technology for control of the damage and deformation of underground surrounding rocks was proposed for underground caverns. Finally, two typical underground powerhouses were selected as case studies. These achievements can provide significant references for prevention and control of dynamic disasters for underground engineering with similar complicated geological conditions. 展开更多

Granitic veins(GVs)have a significant influence on the mechanical responses of tunnels excavated in granitic strata.Distinguishing the mechanical properties of host granites(HGs),GVs and vein-granite interfaces(VGIs)is critical. For this, this paper analyzed the mechanical behaviors and rupture processes of typical HG,GV,and VGI samples under uniaxial compression condition. For the rocks studied, although the linear axial stress‒strain relation can be identified and the deformation modulus can be determined, the transverse deformation developed nonlinearly with axial stress. As a result, the instantaneous Poisson’s ratio increases continuously and may even exceed 0.5,making it extremely difficult to accurately determine the Poisson’s ratio. In addition, the studied GV samples were found to be significantly brittle, indicating that large-scale GVs cannot be ignored when assessing rockburst hazards in granitic strata with brittle GVs.In terms of the rupture process, the HG and GV samples were gradually damaged by the formation of small-scale cracks and then ruptured by large cracks formed from smallscale cracks, whereas the VGI samples ruptured along large cracks with significant energy release.By examining the characteristic stress thresholds of these three granites,it is noted that the crack closure stress scc exceeds both the crack initiation stress sci and the crack damage stress scd for the HG and VGI samples. The transverse damage to a tested sample appears to be significantly greater than the axial damage, which is essentially related to the rock grain size and grain size distribution. 展开更多

Landslides induced by reservoir inundation are common in Southwest China, negatively influencing hydropower stations.TheWunonglong hydropower station dam was constructed in the upper reaches of the Lancang River, accordingly causing the water level at the Lajinshengu slope to increase by 30 m.A tension crack with a visible depth of 8 m was observed in the upper sector of the Lajinshengu slope after reservoir impoundment for 170 d.In the following days, numerous cracks appeared on the surface of the slope, and the maximum displacement of the slope reached 3.22 m.Then,a large-scale active deformation body within the Lajinshengu slope formed with an area of 2.62×10^(5)m^(2)and a volume of 1.65×10^(7)m^(3).Detailed field investigations,on-site monitoring, and centrifugal model tests were carried out to analyze the surface features, deformation characteristics, and failure mechanism of the Lajinshengu slope. The results show that the slope is an ancient landslide, divided into two parts(i.e.zone A and zone B)by the gully.Zone B is a traction landslide caused by the displacement of zone A.The longterm inundation weakens the soft rock at the slope foot, intensifying the toppling of bedrock and consequently triggering the sliding of the overburden in zone A.The failure mode of the Lajinshengu slope is a typical case of toppling-sliding failure, and the underlying rock toppling drives the overlying sliding. In addition, early identification methods for toppling deformation covered by overburdened soil were proposed based on monitoring data and deformation signs. 展开更多

Accurate dynamic modeling of landslides could help understand the movement mechanisms and guide disaster mitigation and prevention.Discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA)is an effective approach for investigating landslides. However,DDA fails to accurately capture the degradation in shear strength of rock joints commonly observed in high-speed landslides. In this study,DDA is modified by incorporating simplified joint shear strength degradation.Based on the modified DDA,the kinematics of the Baige landslide that occurred along the Jinsha River in China on 10 October 2018 are reproduced. The violent starting velocity of the landslide is considered explicitly.Three cases with different violent starting velocities are investigated to show their effect on the landslide movement process.Subsequently, the landslide movement process and the final accumulation characteristics are analyzed from multiple perspectives. The results show that the violent starting velocity affects the landslide motion characteristics, which is found to be about 4 m/s in the Baige landslide. The movement process of the Baige landslide involves four stages:initiation,high-speed sliding,impact-climbing,low-speed motion and accumulation. The accumulation states of sliding masses in different zones are different, which essentially corresponds to reality. The research results suggest that the modified DDA is applicable to similar high-level rock landslides. 展开更多

For projects near the tectonic belt, mylonite of varying metamorphic degrees may be present. The matrix proportion of rock reflects its internal microscopic characteristics, thus it is beneficial for engineering geology to study the effect of the matrix proportion on the mechanical properties and rupture behaviors of rock.Samples of mylonitic granite and granitic protomylonite with varying matrix proportions were obtained from a ductile shear zone for a series of uniaxial compression and acoustic emission(AE)tests. The results showed that with the increase in matrix proportion, the average strength and elastic modulus of the samples increased, and the rock sample with the largest matrix proportion exhibited the maximum peak stress of 244.42 MPa,which was 45.86%greater than the average peak stress of the rock samples with the smallest matrix proportions. For the rock samples with larger matrix proportion, their mechanical parameters exhibited greater dispersion and the large-scale appearance of AE events occurred earlier, showing a relatively gradual failure process. These samples had larger accumulated AE parameter values and greater degree of failure. In contrast, for samples with smaller matrix proportions, the large-scale appearance of AE events occurred close to the peak stress, indicating that the occurrence of damage and fractures was centralized and instantaneous. These samples had lower accumulated AE parameter values and fewer cracks after failure.Additionally, for the rock samples with more matrix proportion, the average variance of the b-value was 1.1,which was lower than that of rock samples with the smallest matrix proportion(the average variance of the b-value was 3.7).Furthermore,it can be predicted that under certain stress, the failure depth around a tunnel is generally smaller when the strength of rock samples with larger matrix proportion is greater. 展开更多

Dilatancy is a fundamental volumetric growth behavior observed during loading and serves as a key index to comprehending the intricate nonlinear behavior and constitutive equation structure of rock. This study focuses on Jinping marble obtained from the Jinping Underground Laboratory in China at a depth of 2400 m.Various uniaxial and triaxial tests at different strain rates, along with constant confining pressure tests and reduced confining pressure tests under different confining pressures were conducted to analyze the mechanical response and dilatancy characteristics of the marble under four stress paths.Subsequently,a new empirical dilatancy coefficient is proposed based on the energy dissipation method. The results show that brittle failure characteristics of marble under uniaxial compression are more obvious with the strain rate increasing, and plastic failure characteristics of marble under triaxial compression are gradually strengthened.Furthermore, compared to the constant confining pressure, the volume expansion is relatively lower under unloading condition. The energy dissipation is closely linked to the process of dilatancy, with a rapid increase of dissipated energy coinciding with the beginning of dilatancy.A new empirical dilatancy coefficient is defined according to the change trend of energy dissipation rate curve,of which change trend is consistent with the actual dilatancy response in marble under different stress paths. The existing empirical and theoretical dilatancy models are analyzed, which shows that the empirical dilatancy coefficient based on the energy background is more universal. 展开更多

In fractured geothermal reservoirs, the fracture networks and internal fluid flow behaviors can significantly impact the thermal performance. In this study,we proposed a non-Darcy rough discrete fracture network(NR-DFN)model that can simultaneously consider the fracture evolution and non-Darcy flow dynamics in studying the thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)coupling processes for heat extraction in geothermal reservoir. We further employed the model on the Habanero enhanced geothermal systems(EGS)project located in Australia.First, our findings illustrate a clear spatial-temporal variation in the thermal stress and pressure perturbations,as well as uneven spatial distribution of shear failure in 3D fracture networks.Activated shear failure is mainly concentrated in the first fracture cluster.Secondly, channeling flow have also been observed in DFNs during heat extraction and are further intensified by the expansion of fractures driven by thermal stresses. Moreover, the combined effect of non-Darcy flow and fracture evolution triggers a rapid decline in the resulting heat rate and temperature. The NR-DFN model framework and the Habanero EGS's results illustrate the importance of both fracture evolution and non-Darcy flow on the efficiency of EGS production and have the potential to promote the development of more sustainable and efficient EGS operations for stakeholders. 展开更多

For a long time, seasonal drought occurs frequently in Southwest China, and the management of water and fertilizer in kiwifruit orchards has no quantitative standards, which seriously affects the yield and quality of kiwifruit. Therefore, the effects of water and fertilizer deficit regulation with drip irrigation(WFDRDI)on the quality of kiwifruit at different growth stages were explored to achieve water and fertilizer saving, and green and efficient production of kiwifruit. We select‘Jin Yan'kiwifruit and set two water deficit levels(W_(D20%)and W_(D40%))and three fertilizer deficit levels(F_(D15%),F_(D30%)and F_(D45%))at bud burst to leafing stage(stageⅠ),flowering to fruit set stage(stageⅡ),fruit expansion stage(stageⅢ)and fruit maturation stage(stageⅣ),respectively, with a full irrigation and fertilization as the control treatment(CK)in 2017and 2018.Results showed that the WFDRDI at stageⅡandⅢhad significant effect on fruit physical quality of kiwifruit,specifically,theⅢ-WD40%F_(D30%)andⅢ-W_(D20%)F_(D45%)treatments significantly increased fruit firmness by 13.62 and 15.59%(P<0.05),respectively;theⅡ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)andⅢ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)treatments significantly increased dry matter by 8.19 and 6.47%(P<0.05),respectively;theⅢ-W_(D20%)F_(D15%)treatment significantly increased single fruit weight and fruit volume by 9.33 and 12.65%(P<0.05),respectively;theⅡ-W_(D20%)F_(D15%)treatment significantly increased fruit water content by 1.99%(P<0.05).The WFDRDI had an obvious effect on fruit chemical quality of kiwifruit.TheⅢ-W_(D20%)F_(D45%),Ⅳ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)andⅣ-W_(D20%)F_(D30%)treatments significantly increased vitamin C(Vc)content by 69.96,36.96 and 34.31%(P<0.05),respectively;theⅢ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)andⅣ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)treatments significantly increased total soluble solid(TSS)content by 3.79 and 17.05%(P<0.05),respectively,and significantly increased soluble sugar content by 28.61 and 34.79%(P<0.05),respectively;the contents of fructose, glucose and sucrose also had a significantly increasing trend, which was increased significantly by 5.58–19.63%,40.55–60.36%and 54.03–54.92%in theⅢ-WD40%F_(D15%)andⅣ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)treatments(P<0.05),respectively;sugar–acid ratio was increased significantly in theⅣ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)treatment by 64.65%(P<0.05).The degree and duration of water and fertilizer deficit had a comprehensive effect on fruit quality of kiwifruit. The WFDRDI at stageⅡandⅢcontribute to improving fruit physical quality, and the threshold of water and fertilizer deficit were 20 and 15%,respectively;stageⅢandⅣare the critical periods for improving fruit chemical quality by water and fertilizer coupling effect, and the threshold of water and fertilizer deficit were 40 and 15%,respectively.Therefore,aiming at precise water and fertilizer saving,theⅠ-W_(D20%)F_(D30%),Ⅱ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%),Ⅲ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)andⅣ-W_(D40%)F_(D15%)treatments under WFDRDI during the whole growth period of kiwifruit were the best mode to improve quality and production of kiwifruit. 展开更多

The fight-bank slope of the Dagangshan hydropower station located in Southwest China is a highly unloaded rock slope. Moreover, large-scale natural faults were detected in the slope body; some excavation-induced unloading fractures were discovered at elevations between lo75m and 1146m. Because of poor tectonic stability, the excavation work was suspended in September 2009, and six large- scale anti-shear galleries were employed to replace the weak zone in the slope body to reinforce the fight- bank slope. In this study, based on microseismic- monitoring technology and a numerical-simulation method, the stabilities of the slope with and without the reinforcement are analysed. An in-situ microseismic-monitofing system is used to obtain quantitative information about the damage location, extent, energy, and magnitude of the rocks. Thus, any potential sliding block in the fight-bank slope can be identified. By incorporating the numerical results along with the microseismic-monitoring data, the stress concentration is found to largely occur aroundthe anti-shear galleries, and the seismic deformation near the anti-shear galleries is apparent, particularly at elevations of 121o, 118o, 115o, and 112om. To understand the interaction mechanism between the anti-shear gallery and the surrounding rock, a 2D simulation of the potential damage process occurring in an anti-shear gallery is performed. The numerical simulation helps in obtaining additional information about the stress distribution and failure-induced stress re-distribution in the vicinity of the anti-shear galleries that cannot be directly observed in the field. Finally, the potential sliding surface of the right-bank slope is numerically obtained, which generally agrees with the spatial distribution of the in-situ monitored microseismic events. The safety factor of the slope reinforced with the anti-shear gallery increases by approximately 36.2%. Both the numerical results and microseismic data show that the anti-shear galleries have a good reinforcement effect. 展开更多
