Dam-break analysis is of great importance in mountain environment,especially where reservoirs are located upstream of densely populated areas and hydraulic hazard should be assessed for land planning purposes.Accordingly,there is a need to identify suitable operative tools which may differ from the ones used in flat flood-prone areas.This paper shows the results provided by a 1D and a 2D model based on the Shallow Water Equations(SWE) for dam-break wave propagation in alpine regions.The 1D model takes advantage of a topographic toolkit that includes an algorithm for pre-processing the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and of a novel criterion for the automatic cross-section space refinement.The 2D model is FLO-2D,a commercial software widely used for flood routing in mountain areas.In order to verify the predictive effectiveness of these numerical models,the test case of the Cancano dam-break has been recovered from the historical study of De Marchi(1945),which provides a unique laboratory data set concerning the consequences of the potential collapse of the former Cancano dam(Northern Italy).The measured discharge hydrograph at the dam also provides the data to test a simplified method recently proposed for the characterization of the hydrograph following a sudden dam-break. 展开更多

GIS-Based Model to Assess Erosion Sensitivity in Northern Morocco. Laou Watershed Case Study

This application on the Laou watershed represents the first part of study results that concerns the development of a model for mapping soil susceptibility at a regional scale in northern Morocco using spatial databases and geographic information systems (GIS). The model uses qualitative decision rules and hierarchical organization of data represented by different thematic maps. Those laters are derived from input erosion parameters which are coded according to their sensitivity to water erosion. Superposing effect of several layers: geology, geomorphology, land use and topography, allows we the obtaining of a qualitative map showing the potential sensitivity to erosion per unit area. The obtained map shows that severe erosion affects the Southern and North-western sectors of the basin, even if they present the least erodible lands of all the basin and have, as well, a relatively dense plant cover. It may be concluded that both high gradient and damaged terrain state represent the main factors of water erosion in the Laou watershed. 展开更多

This paper shows that the stiffness ofstyrene-butadiene solid rubber with added kaolin powder is related to the yield stress of kaolin dispersion in liquid polybutadiene rubber up to the percolation threshold. For five kinds of kaolin powder, the value of τ° spans the range of 100-430 Pa, while the corresponding compressive elastic constant of SBR varies from 12 to 21 MPa. A relationship between τ° and △E^i^*/ER^* is proposed. Critical examination of these data infers that kaolin powder dispersed in solid rubber matrix acts as an additive which decreases the random movement of the polybutadiene chains. Consequently, dispersions of nano-particles in liquid and in solid SBR are considered to be related, thus leading to a theological method for selecting nano-particles as fillers in solid SBR. 展开更多

Rheologicat measurements of four colloidal kaolin powders dispersed in water, paraffinic oil and liquid rubber have been done at solid concentration (9 (VS/VL) in the range 8-33%. In quasi-static conditions the yield stress τ° values were derived. An S-shaped relationship between τ° and (9 exists, that allows to evaluate the percolation threshold θc values. In water θc ranges between 29% and 33%, while it is between 17% and 21% in oil and in liquid rubber. In water the microstructure units, i.e. the primary clusters among kaolin crystallites, are denser and bigger than the ones in the two other liquids. Furthermore, in quasistatic condition, the aqueous microstructure units have less tendency to cling together to form a network that can span all over the liquid phase. The different kaolin dispersions at θ equal to 22% are characterized by yield stress ranging between 7.S Pa and 59 Pa in water, 66-250 Pa in oil and 230-770 Pa in liquid rubber. It has been found that for any kaolin types the log τ°/ θ evaluated near to the percolation threshold is a conservative parameter of the three different liquids. These results are useful to design colloidal dispersions with selected microstructure. 展开更多

Moreover, such a set of hyperbolic and dispersive depth-averagedequations shows an interesting resonance phenomenon in the wave pattern of the solu-tion and we define conditions for the occurrence of resonance and present an algorithmto capture it. As an indirect check on the analytical solution we have carried out a de-tailed comparison with the numerical solution of the government equations obtainedfrom a dissipative method that does not make explicit use of the solution of the localRiemann problem. 展开更多
